Strong group today. I enjoyed leading. YHC had to take two pulls off the enhaler this am to keep the bronchitis at bay. Good thing I did because this was a fast paced one. Lots of Larry Birds out there today. (I have bronchittis…) 3 dudes showed up for KB. 2 of them actually did it. That same 3rd individual also refusniked mary at the end.

Spackler, (3rd individual mentioned above) did crush the jail break. Hair Ball was right on his tail though. Hair Ball was also able to complete Mary.

There was not a lot of mumble chatter today so I will take that as an indication that the PAX were sucking wind.

Thanks for letting me lead.

This was a rough workout.  I feel we are going to have a lot of sore men come tomorrow morning.  Impressive work by Long Haul pushing Mighty Mite in the suicides.   As always it’s a pleasure leading a great group of men.  I’m proud to be a part of it.

Moleskin.

Q showed up early to check the track to make sure no deer were on the track **see fast twitch back blast**

The chatter was loud during the warm up. Once the king of hearts was called. I did hear a few pax saying “is he serious”. Was a little nervous about the first part but I ran with it. The deck o cards was something I got from Spackler and I didn’t want to let him down. Although spackler got a little upset I ended mine early. He was questioning the count by a few pax.

Once the partner merkins were pulled there was a lot of chatter about the hand slap. Remember boys that’s about 5% of that workout. Don’t get caught up in the weeds. A few more diamonds were called and I had to do the audible or risk a mutiny right there. Not gonna lie trying to keep up with Busch on the partner merkins was tough.

The q was a little gassed so the rest of the count gets a little foggy. You all should be proud that you did at least 2.5 today.

There was a lot of chatter about the q’s shirt. Apparently there was some talk about bowels, etc… I am just happy with the good work out.

Preblast: Devil’s Turn 5/22

This week there was discussion of taking the DT show on the road and heading down to Rebel Yell to show them how the Murderhorn is run.  However, news of people getting hit and the lack of roads with appropriate shoulders caused a second thought on that idea.

Instead, the plan remains the same as previous weeks. Start at 5:15 am in the greenway parking lot at the corner of Rea Rd. and Bevington Place, proceed to warm up for a mile and then accelerate to a “comfortably hard” pace and hold it for the remaining 45 minutes.

Before you decide to make that pace too comfortable, see last week’s preblast for how to calculate your Marathon and Threshold training paces and plan to run between those for the workout.  It will not be easy! http://f3nation.com/2014/05/14/preblast-devils-turn-515/

#F3Swift – Wings Flapping

On Tuesday morning at 0515, several Sons of Ballantyne (SOB) sped off for a quick warm-up and drill.  We got in some bird walking (toes and heels), bird hopping (skips), and road runner (butt kicks and high knees) BEEP-BEEP!

Upon returning to the Vine AO, we picked up some, dropped some off, and headed out at 0530 for the Swift workout.

The THANG:

  • 0.5 mile warm-up (early birds got about 1.0 extra)
  • Run at 1 mile Race pace (a.k.a. Repetition Pace or R-pace from the calculator at http://runsmartproject.com/calculator) for the following intervals around the Bull Ring at Ballantyne Corporate Park:
  • 4x200m with 200m recovery jog after each – regroup PAX after set
  • 2x400m with 400m recovery jog after each – regroup PAX after set
  • 800m with 600m recovery jog
  • Can’t decide how much time we have left intervals…flapping our wings here
  • 200m with 200m recovery
  • 400m with 400m recovery
  • 2x200m with 200m recovery back to COT

The Moleskin:

  • Record for 0515 warm-up since we finally pulled in some Bagpipers, and record for Swift with 12 PAX.  Steady improvement.
  • The goal in this workout is finding the consistent 1 mile Race Pace – key for the F3 Area 51 Olympics in June.  That means that the 200m, 400m, and 800m are all run at the same pace.  It’s hard to hold back on the shorter intervals, so leave that for the races.
  • Long recovery is key for the high effort at each interval.  Breathing should return before starting the next interval, so keep the recoveries to a slow jog.
  • 24 hours have passed since this workout, so YHC doesn’t recall all of the events of yesterday morning, but 800m (0.5miles) around the Bull Ring sure does seem far…
  • Welcome to Swift FNGs Voodoo and Udder

Anvil

The SF was planted by someone prior to the KB pre-work Q’d by Champagne.  At 0530, 30 of Area 51’s willing and able pax took off for another midweek attack at Anvil.

Thang:

Even before we set out, Crabcake noted I dropped off some toys at the far end of campus.  Thanks to Pele for the assist with that.  Before we got to the far end near hilly entrance 4 – we did the following:

Jog to other end of campus near Rt. 51 for COP:

SSH x 43 IC (Happy birthday PH)

Squat x 25 IC

Groiner x 13 IC

IW x 43 IC

1/2 Way Around the Clock Merkins (from 12:00 counterclockwise to 6:00).  YVHC must confess my weakness in audibling out of this one.  Intended to come back to it at the end but forgot.  Weak and forgetful Q.

Run to far end of campus (entrance 4) with some butt-kickers and high knees on the way.

Plankorama while waiting for the pax to reassemble.

Split Pax into 3 groups for the following (rotating through each station):

1) Hairburners – 3 rounds for everyone

2) Entrance 4 Hill – Lunge walk down, Backwards lunge walk up

3) Mary – Knee Up x 20 IC, Flutter x 20 IC, LBC x 20 IC

Run to grassy median for celebratory burpees in honor of PH’s 43rd birthday.

PH & others with beards, goatees, etc: 43 burpees OYO

Pax over the age of 43: 40 burpees OYO (bit of a break for the old men)

Pax under the age of 43: 50 burpees (should have made the hate-hate’s do 70, and the 30-something’s do 60.  I’ll do better next time)

Dolly x 13 IC

CCV x 13R & x13L IC

Makthar Ndjiaye x 13 IC

AYG sprint to the shovel flag

COT

Solid closing prayer by TR.  Remember to keep M. Pele and his whole family in your prayers – breast cancer surgery next week.

Ye Olde Moleskine

Happy birthday to one of Area 51’s finest – Purple Haze.  Thankful for you brother….not thankful for the extra COP reps and burpees, but owed them to you and the pax.

Included Radar’s right lung in the pax listing.  Mercy!  No wonder you refused to do 3 rounds of hairburners. #refusenik

Great work by the pax.  Thanks to Baracus & Young Love for the opportunity to Q.  Saw a lot of new faces – great to see the pax growing.  Keep EH’ing your friends, family and neighbors men.  We need F3, and so do lots of other men.

Sorry for the Around the Clock Merkin audible gents.  YHVC still has a ways to go to get back in shape…but I’ll get there and we’ll try that one again soon.

HDHH tonight at The Lodge @ 6pm

June 14 – about 13 different events going on that day:

1) Bicycle Ride for underprivileged kids from 8:00 to Noon – see website, emails, twitter and/or Far Side for more details

2) F3 Dads

3) Area51 CSAUP Olympics

4) Area51 School’s Out/Summer’s Starting Pool Party

5) Flag Day -The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as ‘Flag Birthday’, or ‘Flag Day’.

Skunkiversary 2.0 – Something Old, Something New

On the second anniversary of Skunkworks, thirty-eight men gathered in the gloom to get their exercise on. Given the anniversary and the growth of the PAX since the inaugural Skunk, YHC wanted to provide a taste of the original Skunk, mixed in with the Skunk 2.0 we’ve all come to fear and enjoy:

–          Nice crowd this morning. Folks seemed to be in a festive mood, especially when they saw the toys lined up in the parking lot. Nice witty banter during SSH and IW. Banter ceased as the PAX were punched in the throat with the call for 100 burpees. YHC heard a couple “is he serious?” remarks, which I ignored as I got to it. Nice work by all on the burpees as most seemed to finish in time.

–          Apologies on deleting the attendance list. Probably something to do with shakey-fingers and O2 deprivation, but I remember looking at my phone, seeing that I had properly recorded the name-o-rama, then promptly deleting it. Not sure what I was thinking…

–          Given the work it took Tiger Rag and Stone Cold to load their vehicles at home and arrive early to set-up the amusement park, it’s no wonder that Skunk has moved on to utilize the kettlebell rather than “everything and the kitchen sink.” Still though, once in a while it’s fun to bring out the implements and experiment a little.

–          Thanks to Tiger Rag and Stone Cold for inventing Skunkworks. For many, it remains the highlight workout of the week. Thanks to Harley as well for keeping the tradition going into its third year. Every week this site is guaranteed to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest, beatdowns one can experience in South Charlotte. Thanks to Harley for allowing me to lead this week – it was an honor and a privilege – and to Tiger Rag, Stone Cold and Harley for the assist.

–          Finally, a little history lesson for the 2nd generation Skunks. This workout is so old Donkey Kong was still Heinz in the early BBs…

Fear the Beards: Day Zero Turns 1

PRE-BLAST:

On Memorial Day weekend 2013, Day Zero launched its first workout with an inspiring speech from Radar about America and pushing ourselves past our limits. That day set the tone for what Day Zero has become…one badass Saturday workout. And now one year later, we are set to do it again. Radar and Purple Haze on Q to reflect on what we’ve done and to lay the groundwork for the year ahead.

The flag will go where we go. Where we go, we will go quickly. What we do when we get there will be hard. So come prepared to give your best, your all. And if you can grow a beard between now and Saturday, you should.

#F3TheRock, who launched us, and #F3Olympus, who we helped inspire, will converge with us. 0700 on the McAlpine Proving Grounds. See you there on Saturday after the 2nd installment of Byron’s KB clinic.

  • Great showing out there today with 17 for the first anniversary of Fast Twitch
  • Welcome FNGs to Fast Twitch – hope to see you back out again soon
  • No takers for a burpee mile or beer mile as suggested in the pre-blast, but we did end up with the Venison Mile.  Bambi wanted in on the action, joining our pack in the warm-up.  I think that was the fastest we’ve ever seen some of the PAX move.
  • Congrats to Haze moving up another notch in seniority tomorrow.  Seems the age is catching up with him after the pleas to head back the short way after the 11s, apparently concerned he might not be able to make it back in time.
  • On behalf of Spackler, we’re all so proud of Semi-Gloss.
  • Thanks to Hops for taking us out in COT
