2 shovel flags were briefly planted while 34 Pax gathered in the McAlpine Elementary School parking lot for the 1 year anniversary of #F3DayZero. Our brothers from #F3TheRock and #F3Olympus joined us for the occasion. But more than a celebration of the first year of the workout it was more of a time to remember and to honor those that served and gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms we now enjoy. Throughout the workout, we made special note of sacrifices, which are detailed below.
The Thang
At 0700, Radar and YHC grabbed the flags and carried them out to the Proving Grounds as the Pax followed. The flags were firmly planted in the middle as we gathered for COP. Radar gave a stirring speech about pushing ourselves today. YHC encouraged the Pax to sound off in our cadence. All 34 did both today.
Before the Merkins, the Pax were informed that there were approximately 455,000 American deaths in WWII…an average of 297 deaths per day.
Then, at Radar’s encouragement, our youngest 2.0s, SouthPaw & Jackie Chan, carried the flags over to the Yellow Rose parking lot, as the Pax followed. Awaiting us there were plates for hairburners and Radar’s funbags for CMIYC. This part of our workout was dedicated to Marine Corps PFC HAROLD CHRIST AGERHOLM. Radar read the Citation noted below.
In groups/partners here’s what we did:
Repeat above except with 10 squats for the CMIYC.
Then, our older 2.0s, Charlie and Tadpole, both of which want to be Navy Seals, carried the flags back to the Proving Grounds, as the Pax fell in behind in two lines.
Back to the field, we stayed in the two lines and dropped for Partner Merkins to 10. Before the Partner Merkins, we noted that approximately 6,600 Americans were killed, wounded or lost at Normandy when the Allied forces stormed the beaches.
After that, we circled up around the flags for the grand finale…100 burpees OYO. But before the burpees, Radar read the Citations noted below for Naval Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and Naval Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor.

Moleskin
All the men today brought it strong today and worked hard to honor the sacrifice of many. We could never repay for what’s been done so that we can live in freedom. Today was simply a small way to show our appreciation. Never forget the blood shed by those who have served. Never forget.
As for our Day Zero 1 year, thanks for all the support of the Pax this past year, for the convergence of TheRock and Olympus today, and for the men who showed up and gave big effort today. We look forward to this next one.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 4th Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, 7 July 1944. When the enemy launched a fierce, determined counterattack against our positions and overran a neighboring artillery battalion, Pfc. Agerholm immediately volunteered to assist in the efforts to check the hostile attack and evacuate our wounded. Locating and appropriating an abandoned ambulance jeep, he repeatedly made extremely perilous trips under heavy rifle and mortar fire and single-handedly loaded and evacuated approximately 45 casualties, working tirelessly and with utter disregard for his own safety during a grueling period of more than 3 hours. Despite intense, persistent enemy fire, he ran out to aid 2 men whom he believed to be wounded marines but was himself mortally wounded by a Japanese sniper while carrying out his hazardous mission. Pfc. Agerholm’s brilliant initiative, great personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts in the face of almost certain death reflect the highest credit upon himself and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan on 27 and 28 June 2005. While leading a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lieutenant Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. On 28 June 2005, operating in an extremely rugged enemy-controlled area, Lieutenant Murphy’s team was discovered by anti-coalition militia sympathizers, who revealed their position to Taliban fighters. As a result, between 30 and 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, Lieutenant Murphy valiantly led his men in engaging the large enemy force. The ensuing fierce firefight resulted in numerous enemy casualties, as well as the wounding of all four members of the team. Ignoring his own wounds and demonstrating exceptional composure, Lieutenant Murphy continued to lead and encourage his men. When the primary communicator fell mortally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy repeatedly attempted to call for assistance for his beleaguered teammates. Realizing the impossibility of communicating in the extreme terrain, and in the face of almost certain death, he fought his way into open terrain to gain a better position to transmit a call. This deliberate, heroic act deprived him of cover, exposing him to direct enemy fire. Finally achieving contact with his Headquarters, Lieutenant Murphy maintained his exposed position while he provided his location and requested immediate support for his team. In his final act of bravery, he continued to engage the enemy until he was mortally wounded, gallantly giving his life for his country and for the cause of freedom. By his selfless leadership, courageous actions, and extraordinary devotion to duty, Lieutenant Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

CitationFor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as automatic weapons gunner for Naval Special Warfare Task Group Arabian Peninsula, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 29 September 2006. As a member of a combined SEAL and Iraqi Army Sniper Overwatch Element, tasked with providing early warning and stand-off protection from a rooftop in an insurgent held sector of Ar Ramadi, Iraq, Petty Officer Monsoor distinguished himself by his exceptional bravery in the face of grave danger. In the early morning, insurgents prepared to execute a coordinated attack by reconnoitering the area around the element’s position. Element snipers thwarted the enemy’s initial attempt by eliminating two insurgents. The enemy continued to assault the element, engaging them with a rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire. As enemy activity increased, Petty Officer Monsoor took position with his machine gun between two teammates on an outcropping of the roof. While the SEALs vigilantly watched for enemy activity, an insurgent threw a hand grenade from an unseen location, which bounced off Petty Officer Monsoor’s chest and landed in front of him. Although only he could have escaped the blast, Petty Officer Monsoor chose instead to protect his teammates. Instantly and without regard for his own safety, he threw himself onto the grenade to absorb the force of the explosion with his body, saving the lives of his two teammates. By his undaunted courage, fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of certain death, Petty Officer Monsoor gallantly gave his life for his country, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Molesine:
Today was about simply crushing it. Mr. Hankey proved to be the better man by a LONG shot. I attribute my lack of energy to the No Carb Diet but not to take anything away from Hankey as even at my best, he would have killed me. This guy is on a completely different level…I guess being 26 gives you that extra gear. Nice work out there brother.
Get ready for his routine when he gets to Q…those elbow plank crawls were brutal and it just got worse and worse!
As always, Angler is the most reliable person I know. He show’s up every week injured or in pain and works through it #DFQ!
Again, it was a pleasure to lead you men today and I am looking forward to more SPEARHEAD sessions like this to come.

It was all about the chest and bi’s for the Kevlar workout today. The pre tweet mentioned showing off the guns and only YHC and Runstopper were brave enough to participate. The rest of the pax were soon wishing they’d left the sleeves at home as they got swolled up real quick in the circle of pain. The silver bell was certainly a doozie to curl when it came time as was Big League Chew’s mammoth 53 pounder. As we headed out of the COP Runstopper pulled a Semi Gloss and left the shirt behind but thankfully Donkey King left his on!
Kotters to Cottonmouth for taking the time to post after all of his time spent on the golf outing. He was certainly feeling it on the burpee hill combo – as were the rest of us.
Switched things up today by hitting the playground to knock out a few pull-ups now that we have some daylight which worked well. Welcome to FNG Doodles named after the Chic Fil A cow!
All in all a good workout which should make sure that we are all pumped for the pool this weekend.
Enjoy time with your family and friends this Memorial Day weekend.

Moleskine:
Great work by the Pax this morning. YHC decided to arrive in the wee AM hours to scout out new territory and come up with an effective down painment to springboard everyone into the Memorial Day week-end. Based on initial feedback, I believe everyone left satisfied. Great to have several new faces (including a couple from south of the border) mixed in with the Centurion regulars. Also, great to see Ribeye who crosses over the DMZ line quite often (and is Qing Centurion next week).
Hops was dusting everyone on all the backward runs. Checkpoint continues to defy his age. For him, age is definitely just a number. Abacus, Purple Haze, Mermaid, Cane and Champagne get extra credit for arriving early for the Champagne led Kettlebell work. Philmont plans to bring some birthday accessories (hats, etc) to the Day Zero Convergence tomorrow much to the chagrin of Purple Haze. Strong work by Hannibal this week – five hard workouts in a row. Mighty Mite apparently had a Merlot spillage after the AYG back home. Any additional Pax details are welcome below. YHC felt some camaraderie with Gideon (who was the topic in 3rd F The Stand) this morning as he led. As always, it was an honor to lead such great group of men.

Day Zero 1 Year Anniversary this Sat with The Rock and Olympus
Memorial Day Convergence at Symphony Park in South Park on Monday
Eighteen rocket-legged pax, two junior footballs and a butterball turkey stormed the field for another installment of #FunFriday. What it lacked in Fun it made up for in Friday.
PREGAME
Toss around TR 2.3’s under-inflated junior football in the well-lit parking lot where we find out that Uncle Leo is amphibious–he can throw equally poorly with the left of right. Once Bananas arrived with the other Jr. football and a frictionless leather sphere with laces, we discussed how the disclaimer applies to throwing, and presumably catching, footballs at twilight.
Mosey to the far side of the track for a muted COP for SSH, IW, low slow squats, where Rivet either sets off a bag of Snap ‘n’ Pops in his pocket, eats a can of Pringles, or with virtually no cartilage in his lower extremities, grinds bone on bone.
GAME TIME
Head to goal line for alternating sprints to the 20, 40, 40, 20, Goal. Then run it back in reverse. For those at DV on Wednesday, you’re just going to have to deal with that.
Agility Work:
Attempt QB and Receiver with some 10 yard outs, 20 yard outs and fly patterns but could never find the groove so that guys waiting weren’t standing around. That, plus the #HairyEyeball from the crew setting up for what appeared to be a graduation ceremony had us move to the horseshoe for Mary. Flutters, Dolly, then some supine work for the lower back that went entirely unappreciated.
Then back on the field to wrap up with a punting contest. Every pax punts a ball from the goal line and then everyone sprints out to get it and runs back. Repeato until all have punted. Longest punt wins. If someone catches your punt, the punter does 20 burpees. Reggie “Night Court” Roby takes the crown with a 52 yarder, narrowly outdistancing three Pax at 50 to 51 yards (TR, Good Hands, and…who?…someone who launched a #WormBurner about a foot off the ground, and skidded it a good 40 yards. Was that Stone Cold?).
In any event, good times to watch the various attempts and we’re glad to report that there were no injuries other than bruised egos.
POSTGAME MOLESKIN
You’d think it would be pretty simple to come up with 18 punters off the top of your head, but I had to go googling after about 10. It was surprising (to me, at least) to see Spurrier and Danny White on the list (both backup QBs who punted to get on the field) as well as Tom Landry, who punted for the Giants back in the 1950s.
Another interesting fact: Dan Pastorini was the starting QB and punter for the Oilers in the 70s and ranks ahead of former Panther Ken Walter in both career passing yards (18,515 to 0) and career punting average (39.7 to 39.6).

Excellent work out there this morning. Great to have two new PAX – Jason Ackiss (Sensei) and Julian Scott (The Italian). It was an honor to lead such a great expedition of men up the Peak! I’m already seeing guys who were FNG’s 2, 3, 5 weeks ago getting stronger. That is awesome!
Sanka turned on some afterburners for the sprint… he was flying! Tommy Boy was strong during the sprint/merkin repeats… way to push it. Everyone pushed themselves… which is why we do it!

9 men met at Devil’s Turn this AM to run and then like some kind of magic show we were 10. Bratwurst just loves his random appearances at the S. Charlotte track.
The plan was the standard tempo run format with the Progressive Difficulty Matrix to keep everyone honest (the faster you run, the farther you run).
Before starting, the PAX enjoyed watching Marvel driving in circles around the Bevington Place median just trying to figure out how to park at the corner of Bevington and Rea. Don’t worry, next time you will do the mock right turn, U-turn, left turn, then immediate right turn that we have all learned to do in one fluid motion. #ittakespractice Seriously though, we were glad to have you out. Hope you make DT a stepping stone on your way to your first half-marathon in the fall. Great first post!
YHC believes we have now officially turned Horsehead into a runner during his IR from bootcamps. Prohibition and Hannibal are also becoming downright dependable at Devil’s Turn. Nice job on the three-in-a-row posts. Running beasts those two. See you next week!
Long Haul and Jamboree always bring the intensity. There is no stopping those trains once they leave the station. #fullheadofsteam
Once Bratwurst joined us at the track, the conversation turned to the upcoming F3 Olympics and how the events would be handicapped or not handicapped. A full on debate ensued while continuing to circle the track. This was just too much for Bratwurst who just wants some running purity out there and he channeled Mr. T telling us to basically “quit yo jibba jabba.”
This is about when Brat and The Leg left Haggis and YHC in the dust. We probably deserved it since the debate about the Olympics continued the whole way back to the parking lot. Warning though, if you leave a Scotsman and a Georgia redneck to scheme on CSAUP Olympic events, you never know what is going to come out. Beware!
Announcements:
– Wingman is out on IR this week and some of next week due to a minor shoulder procedure. We are looking forward to seeing him out soon. Lucky for us, you can still run with a healing shoulder.
– F3 Charlotte South CSAUP Olympics on June 14 from 6:00 – 8:00 am. Pool Party that night.

Moleskin:
Mic Check asked YHC to fill in for him a day earlier. I think some of the pax were disappointed to see YHC. Frehley’s Comet almost decided to go to Swift upon hearing the news.
Great work by all the pax today. You could tell everyone was competing and pushing themselves through the endless laps around the lake. This workout was a little more Swift than expected.
The best way to keep multiple pax from sprinting at the same time during an Indian is to threaten them with burpees.
It’s always an honor to lead such a great group of men.
Announcements:
F3 Olympics coming soon. Same day as pool party.

27 pax posted for a BeatDown and YHC had 2 objectives for this morning’s gloom; 1) Deliver a workout worthy of living up to the #F3Hydra multi-headed beasts name and what we’ve come to expect when we post on Thursdays, and 2) Introduce 2 variations of a new exercise to try to slow down Run Stopper’s insane burpee cadence and speed. This is how it all went down:
The Thang:
Run around the front of the school to the opposite parking lot as I hear call outs of “Mall Cop, you’re heading the wrong way! We usually run the other direction!”
Quick COP:
SSH x 25
Squats x 20

Enough of a warmup, mosey to the concession area and find a picnic bench, retaining wall, or bleachers for an exercise to try to slow down the insane BEAST (Run Stopper).
Round 1: The Hand Release Box Jump Burpee x 15, go down to the plank position of the burpee and do a hand release merkin, then come up and perform a box jump up onto a bench.
Round 2: The Double Merkin Box Jump Burpee x 15, at the plank position of the burpee do 2 Merkins, then come up and perform a box jump up onto a bench.
Mosey over to the large field between the baseball diamonds where YHC had shown up early to lay out 4 cones 33 yards apart for a total right at 100 yards.
YHC wanted to bring a taste of an early #F3FastTwitch workout that Sprague had Qed to the pax. Sprint all you’ve got 100 yards x 10. YHC timed it to where every 20 seconds we started the next sprint. So if it took you 13 seconds to sprint the 100 yards you would have 17 seconds of recovery time.
Line up along the first cone for the 100 yard Beast, 6 of the exercise called at each of 6 cones.
Round 1) Merkins
Round 2) Squats
Round 3) LBCs
Round 4) Carolina Dry Docks
Round 5) Flutters
Round 6) Burpees
Partner up for some core work with 10 MOM. In honor of Egypt posting at Hydra this morning now that he lives closer to our AO, YHC felt it was time to introduce the Hydra pax to an exercise that Egypt and Malko introduced to me a year and a half ago at Armor. We had a visit from The Granny! This isn’t your normal sweet granny that we all love that knits and bakes, etc… No, this is a mean, old, relentless lady who won’t let up on the pain! Partner 1 planks holding Partner 2’s feet. Partner 2 does AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible) old fashioned sit-ups for 30 seconds, then holds upper body in a 45 degree angle with your arms crossed for 15 secs, look up to the sky for another 15 secs, hold your arms overhead for 15 secs, bring your arms back in crossed over your chest for 15 more secs, then end it with 30 more secs of AMRAP sit-ups. FLAPJACK.

Naked Moleskin:
Great muggy, warm morning for a workout this morning and this one was sure to make you sweat! There were no 10 counts today as YHC wanted to keep it moving with an up-tempo, non-stop pain today. It did pay to be a winner and early finisher on the Beast to get a couple seconds rest as YHC called the next exercise and off we went as soon as the last pax finished the last rep of the previous round.
We all know how good & fast Run Stopper is at performing burpees , so YHC thought I would try to slow him down with the new box jump burpees. All I did was slow the rest of us down as he was done both rounds with his 15 by the time everyone else finished their 10th! We have the women of the Reebock Crossfit to thank for that one as I couldn’t help but notice them performing the box jump burpees as I walked out the Mint Street Parking deck to my car last week to drive home after work.
It was great having Egypt (Best Nickname in All of F3 by the way) out with us this morning, as well as Starfish from the Winston Salem Pax in town with us.
