So we’ve seen the seemingly ubiquitous 1st F challenges, some (if not all) seem impossible, some end up being impossible and some pax finish and wonder how they did it and are proud that they did (rightfully so). We’ve seen the 10,000 merkins, the 10,000 kettlebell swings, we’ve seen at least one of these twice.
So here’s the twist…looking for pax to commit to the first 2nd F challenge. Oh yes, why not? If building relationships that we can call our own (as men) is important and critical then how are we going to get there? You know that guy you’ve been looking at from across the COT, maybe even exchanged a shy fist pump or quick smile? Yeah, that’s the guy, ask him out…wait maybe don’t quite do it that way.
The challenge is relatively simple. Meet with 4 guys that you have met only through F3 (i.e. if you knew them beforehand it does not count), get together with them throughout the month of October. You can arrange to meet someone at HDHH, lunch, breakfast after a workout, coffeeteria, drinks after work, etc. it really doesn’t matter. The point is to connect with other pax outside of the workout environment. Don’t wait to reach out, DM someone on twitter, catch up at the end of a workout or seemingly in YHC’s case just walk through uptown for 5 minutes or email from one of the many email lists that you’ve seen. The key is this, get to know some more guys, build your network of friends, strengthen that bond that started in the gloom.
All YHC can say is this, F3 has undoubtedly changed my life physically, it has also changed my life from the guys that I’ve met. I have met many guys (way too many to mention) that have inspired me in different ways, some with their physical prowess, some by the fact that I look up to them from a personal point of view, some because of their faith and focus on their family. Apart from F3 I would likely have never gotten to know them. Guys bond in the gloom and then we hang out, that’s what this is all about, but just like the gloom, unless you show up, engage in the workout or conversation in this case you won’t get the satisfaction at the end.
It has been suggested that we create a heat map of sorts that identifies where folks live/work (general area) to facilitate people getting together, this is a great idea. YHC’s technical aptitude however prevents him from silencing a call on his iPhone, let alone such a grand idea such as this. As always with F3, if you can think of a way to facilitate this I’m all ears (yes my BRR van would undoubtedly challenge this last claim).
Sound of below, connect via the comments, offer suggestions for making this work or work better, but most importantly, get out there and catch up with someone.
I want you to impact someone’s life, will you do that with me?
In the spirit of friends don’t let friends pre-kettlebell alone YHC made the mistake of showing up early (although not as early as Stone Cold) to make sure Stone Cold didn’t kettle bell alone. This turns out to be a bad idea when YHC is also on Q.
Thankfully at the last minute an even numbered pax showed up and the 8 went off into the gloom to:
Circle up in the parking lot for COP:
SSH x 30
Merkins x 15
IW x 20
Movement prep stretch
Mountain Climber x 20
Low Slow Squat x 20
Mosey to the picnic benches
Step ups x 10 each leg
Elevated dry docks x 10
Plank it up AND… repeato except 8 step ups per leg
Mosey to the playground equipment, split into two groups of two sets of partners
Group 1 does partner AMRAP pull ups + 2, flapjack and repeato
Group 2 does rotating 20 LBC’s, 20 dips until group 1 is done then each group flapjacks
warm up Indian Run lap around the track
Partner 1 runs up grandmother mountain and bear crawls down while partner 2 runs a lap of the track then meet up at the bottom and do 20 burpees between partners (first partner to get there starts) and then plank it up, Lobster Roll to lead a plank-o-rama while YHC goes back up the hill to retrieve the weinke, his 30 sec 6 inches call was indeed a crowd pleaser.
mosey to the middle of the field for partner military presses x 10, flapjack and repeato
partner assisted get ups x 10 each side, flapjack
20 partner paddy cake merkins and then sprint to the goal line for Mary:
10 each way Sid-The-Kid oyo
Flutter x 20
Heels to Heaven x 10
Rosalita x 20
Cross oblique crunches x 5 each side
AYG to cars
Hey look at that, another minute left, 10 good burpees oyo
Moleskine:
All pax cemeted their place in the Jousting tournament by slaying dragons and holding back merlot, although YHC barely made the latter, that’s what I get for partnering with one of the resident Joust beasts (Lobster Roll, you always push the pax, especially YHC, love having you out there). Also good to have Spandex and Blue Rhino pushing it hard on the partner work, good job guys. Les Miserables pulled out the win (I think, it’s hard to see for sure when you are so far back) on the AYG at the end, Uncle Leo seemed to pass YHC on the track like I was standing still, not sure where that burst of speed came from but good to see. Rivet good to see you back, hope to see you some more. Stone Cold, well you cranked out the 60lb kettle bell and then barely got a workout in afterwards, #inspiration.
Great take out by Rivet
Always an honour to Q, especially at one of my favourite AO’s.
Announcements
Looking to EH guys in the Union County Area, they Outland crew is looking to start up more weekday workouts and need the pax to grow them up. Direct EH’s to the website and Counter Top and Hairband.
So at precisely 0527 one of the pax milling about at Base Camp idly states, does anyone know who is on Q? Wondering precisely that myself, and judging from the lack of twitter chatter assumed it was twitterless Fireman Ed but no, it was not. 2 and some odd minutes later YHC calls out for the pax to follow and off we went.
Mosey to the baseball field outfield for a warm up of sorts:
20 x SSH
20 x Mtn Climbers
20 x IW
10 x Merkins
Mosey to bleachers by baseball field for:
15 Dips
10 Jump ups (or step ups)
8 Elevated CDD’s
Plank it up, repeato, then repeato one more time
Mosey to the football field to partner up (size sort of matters)
Anchor and Sled (in honour of the other site Q, you know who you are)
Plank it up
Partner wheelbarrow to the far football goal post, bear crawl back
Partner 100’s with Merkins (Partner 1 runs to the other side of the field while partner 2 does merkins, flapjack until 100 are completed, got a few groans on this one)
Partner bear crawl/crab walk to other side of field, parnter 1 crab walks, partner 2 bear crawls to the other side of the field, flapjacking movement until you reach the other side
Indian Run around the track for a lap (brand new track had to try it out)
Mosey back almost to the cars, stop in grassy knoll, no snipers present so a little Mary was had:
Flutters x 15 (or maybe 20, I don’t remember)
Dolly’s x 15
Sid-The-Kid for 10 each way oyo
Calf raises x 15 IC and wow look at the time we got in an extra minute #extracredit
Moleskine:
Whether impromptu or not, it is always a pleasure for YHC to Q at Base Camp. Some really strong effort out there, we went without many 10 counts or breaks although YHC did hear a call for one at one point so a 10 count was called for and quickly breezed through, makes me think that the BC pax are getting stronger. YHC had to pleasure of partering up with Insomniac for some serious 1st and some 2nd F along the way, was great meeting you brother. Strong send off by Insomniac as well, thanks for that.
Announcements were pretty light so YHC suggested that everyone post on Tuesday and quickly ran down the Tuesday options for an impromptu review.
An even dozen (+1 2.0) eventually showed up for a whirlwind tour of The Rock campus, simulating the world tour that YHC is all too familiar with but that was led by The Mouth on his virgin Q. What a tour it was, it went something like this (after the disclaimer of course):
Jog to open car parking area for a little COP:
IW x 20
Mtn Climber x 25
SSH x 30
Run over to the islands aka The Philippines
At each island do 10 LBC and 10 SSH sprinting to the next one, plank it up when finished
Indian Run (the long way round obviously, The Mouth just finished BRR so distance is not a problem) to the front of the campus.
Backwards run until whistle blows then sprint to the road in front of North Face (in case you can’t see where this is going…)
North Face Triple Nickel
Diamond Crunches x 5 at the top, 5 jump squats at the bottom (the hill wouldn’t have been hard enough without these) x 5 times up and down
Indian Run to Entrance 4
Lunge walk down, bear crawl back up, plank it up, rinse and repeat
Turn it over to Strange Brew for YHC’s 2nd Anniversary Q
Mosey to picnic benches
3 rounds (planking it up in between) of:
20 x Dips
10 x Elevated CDD’s (these work great to isolate the shoulders even more)
10 x Jump ups (or step ups since the benches were quite wet)
Partner up and mosey to the soccer fields
Military presses with partners ankles while they plank x 10, flapjack
Crabwalk to flag football center field and repeat Mil presses, bear crawl back
Partner fist pump sit ups x 10
Prairie Fire Mary x 10 each way, flapjack
Wheelbarrow to mid field, flapjacking as needed
Mosey to the hill (a very short mosey)
Partner 1 runs up hill, does 3 burpees and runs down the hill to partner 2 who was doing CDD’s, flapjack to a total of 200 CDD’s
Mosey back to car area, stopping short on the grass for some Mary:
Flutter x 20
Sid-The-Kid 10 each way oyo
Rosalita x 20
Heels to Heaven x 10
Back to the cars
Ye Olde Moleskine:
A great first Q by The Mouth today, a real honour to co-Q with him, he’s someone I have known over the last number of years, took forever to EH him and now he is killing it out there, a real pleasure to have you out in the gloom my friend. It was YHC’s second F3 anniversary so the obligatory pep talk was given to the pax at the end to EH folks, I needed it big time and it has really changed my life, kudos were handed out to Runstopper for bringing me out and kudos to everyone else for sticking with me all along the way, I’d post a list of names but when I tried to come up with said list it was too long and realized I’d miss too many awesome guys but needless to say I’ve been encouraged, inspired and pulled along by a great many of you.
A few words from The Mouth:
Thanks to KY and The Benefactor for making the trip south from Metro for my V Q. KY promised lots of mumblechatter but the Q must have been successful keeping it at bay because it was kept to a minimum (even during the counting which is not right, just not right, editorial by SB). However KY was constantly at the front even though the chatter was low so it was scored a tied by the decision of the judges.
Mall Cop must have heard early on we were headed to the islands…He showed up at the end of the workout in island wear and with extra shirts in tow…Islands was a running exercise sir.
Thanks for letting me lead (goes for YHC as well), it was an honor (The Mouth’s spelling obviously) to workout with such a great group of men.
Announcements:
Pretty light announcements this morning, as in the only one was to meet at coffeeteria which a good number of pax did.
A great send off to focus our day (YHC would give credit but can’t remember who did the takeout).
So YHC got hassled on Twitter the eve of the Labour Day convergence at DMZ, as one would expect when you spell Labour with the Queen’s English. It really is all about you, meaning that for me its about you, for you it’s about someone else. Sounds like a lot of partner work for the 41 pax that posted to me…and now for:
The Thang:
Jog to Carmel Middle School, try to (and largely fail) get out of the way of a car, eventually car gets through (only lost a few pax), did some high knees, then jog some more, some butt kickers, then jog some more. The pace was kept to a moderate pace, YHC heard compliments from this, it seems like the right way to warm up.
Circle up in the large bus parking lot for a little COP:
SSH x 30
Merkins x 15
IW x 20
Wide arm merkins x 10
Low Slow Squats x 15
Welcome a couple of LIFO’s including an FNG, glad to have you
CDD’s x 20 due to the hassling these were modified to Canadian Dry Docks
Partner up with someone faster or slower as the case may be
Mosey to lacrosse field
Pepper pod (3 steps then all the way down, partner then takes 3 steps, alternating) to the other end of the field, 40 merkins between partners pepper pod back
Plank it up, a little plank-o-rama by Bugeater
Partner 200 – LBC’s partner 1 runs to the other end of the field and back while partner 2 does LBC’s, flapjack until a total of 200 LBC’s are completed
Plank-o-rama by Hops, woah there cowboy, that was a lot of planking
Partner 100 as per above but with Squats
Partner 50 as per above but with Burpees (Crowd pleaser apparently)
Bear crawl with partner (if they stop, you stop, if they modify, you modify), a little more plank-o-rama with a ten count
Partner military presses, round 1 was partner 1 seated, partner 2 sweating over top of partner 1 with hands pushing down for resistance, round two was partner 2 planking with ankles in hand for presses, 10 x for each and obviously flapjacking in between
Partner over/unders x 10 and flapjack (in case your heart rate was slowing down, YHC’s wasn’t but some of your beasts out there…)
Partner get up assists, x 5 each side and flapjack
a 10 count, followed by a 15 count…Q about to spill here
Circle up in the field for some Mary:
LBC’s x 20
Flutter x 15
Dolly x 15
Sid-The-Kid x 10, alternating direction each rep oyo (good comments after that one)
Cross oblique crunch x 5 IC each way
Back with the partner for Prairie Fire Mary x 15 and flapjack
Mosey back to the parking lot, YHC circle back to the six, on the one hand because that’s what I do, on the other because I was about to spilllllll
Moleskine:
Absolute honour (see what I did there) to lead today, as it is every day, Some serious effort was put out there by all, YHC finds that a partner (thanks Spandex) helps push you and vice versa, sort like the iron sharpening thing (ISI). Thankfully it was fairly warm so that everyone at least gave the illusion of breaking a sweat, YHC pretty much killed himself so hopefully the beasts at least we slightly pushed. Was great to have an FNG join us as it always is, please keep up the EH, it’s meant a lot to YHC and all of you, it means a lot to the guy that hasn’t yet come as well. A great take out by Hops as he always does. T Claps to Bugeater and I think Chelms who ran in/out 2 miles. Serious push by JV and our FNG to finish strong, keep it up, the workouts are always hard but they do get easier. Great job by Hops on the plank-o-rama Q jack, nice of you to hit a few of YHC’s achilles…also great to see Skywalker out after his recent appendix fun, you are an example to us all, working out and in daily life.
Announcements:
Keep Turkey Leg in your prayers, his mother passed away just recently
Same for Pele whose father passed away just yesterday
Chelms/Abacus’ brother’s health challenges should also be on your list
Mall Cop has the A51 high vis shirts for pickup, if you haven’t gotten yours yet ping him to catch up
EH those guys, A51 has 3 moderate workouts including Base Camp on Mondays
Sorry in advance for the incredibly negligent backblast post:
25 men set off on the weekly iteration of Death Valley.
YHC thought that a light jog might be in order but to avoid spoiling the plot it went something like this:
Circle jog around the parking lot to teachers parking lot for COP:
SSH x 30
Merkins x 18 What? The Q didn’t say move yet, let’s try that again
IW x 20
Jog back to the flag, grab the flag for a jog to Davie Park
Stop halfway for 20 merkins oyo
Get to park soccer field and partner up
Partner 1 wheelbarrow to fail or 40 yards whichever comes first then flapjack and return
Partner 1 10 Prairie Fire Mary’s, flapjack
Partner 1 10 derkins with feet on partner 2 shoulders, flapjack
Repeato (that seemed to slow down the Prairie Fire Mary’s quite a bit)
Jog back to the school, halfway 10 burpees oyo
Time for some Mary:
Flutter x 20
Rosalita x 20
Sid-The-Kid x 8 each way
One more that YHC can’t remember
Grab some wall for wall sit (take a load off) for 45 sec x 2
BTW x 30 sec x 2
What? 5 min left? Great time to run a lap of the track and meet back in the parking lot for COT
Moleskine:
Thanks to the pax for going on a little road trip with me, it’s been a while since we’ve done that at a boot camp workout. T Claps to Runstopper for some plank work and also working the pax through burpees oyo while waiting for all pax to finish the track lap. Was good to meet Open House on the lap of the track, keep it up brother, it does get easier if you keep coming out. Also T Claps to those pax pushing hard on the run and those that went to add some mumblechatter to push through.
Sorry for the delay on the backblast, Q fail, won’t mention the Q fail on his shoe selection for the wall sit…
18 Men showed up and left a little tired and perhaps a bit stronger, at least the was the intent.
The way they did that went something like this:
Mosey to football field for COP:

Mosey to the snack shop for some wall to finish off the time.
Moleskine:
So many guys that YHC is having a hard time getting to know all of them but that is a good problem to have. I’ll keep working on it if you keep giving me grace to get there. Saw some strong effort during the partner exercises, some good high fives handed out through exchanges and when (in YHC’s case) getting passed by others on the run. A few real speedsters out there. Heard a few groans during some of the Mary, that’s good, keep pushing yourself, the core is…well…core to almost everything we try and do it seems. Maybe that’s why it’s called that, not sure. A real honour to lead this group.
Announcements:
Crockett has been accepted into the Principal internship program which is fantastic, way to go brother!
Peak 51 launched last week at Matthews Elementary School, Thursdays at 0530, it is A51’s 3rd moderate workout of the week
Great send off into the day by SMASH, thanks brother for doing that after YHC put you on the spot.
9 pax escaped the fartsack to embrace Four Corners and more at Ascent.
With Pele in the lead it went something like this:
Mosey to the field for COP
IC:
SSH x 20
IW x 15
Mountain Climbers x 10
Slow Squats x 15
Four Corners inspired from Phillipians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” As I (Pele) walk through difficult times in my life right now and in the future, it is Christ who strengthens me. I see Christ in all the men of F3 and through Christ in You, F3 Nation, I (Pele) am strengthened to post, lead a workout and better myself.

Moleskine:
Great effort by the pax, an honour to Q with Pele today (yes it is spelled with a u). Boomer a hearty Kotters to you, great to see you again (part of the F4 crowd, Fairweather being the 4th F apparently). Far Side was good to see from YHC’s perspective, it had been a while. Far Side’s 2.0 is a chip off the old block, Larry Birding his way through the workout and The Mouth was pushing his 2.0 (Jackie Chan) pretty hard, but then ran out of steam as youth recovers quickly, but you’re still looking good out there Mouth, keep it up.Gecko was pretty strong but that might have been because he missed the inital COT, hard to say but great to have you out there today and Linux wins the effort award as evidenced by the amount of visible perspiration.
Announcements:
New A51 moderate workout, Peak 51 on Thursdays at 0530 at Matthews Elementary School, Geraldo and Slim Fast on Q
Sign up for F3 golf, 2nd F is what it’s all about
Great takeout by Pele today, we’re here with you brother.
32 men took the minefield of the DMZ. The goal was to get a good upper body workout in and YHC was certainly shoulder/chest/arm smoked today, hopefully all the pax were as well. Without further adieu:
Warm up run to the school
COP:
SSH x 35
IW x 25
Mountain Climbers x 20
Slow Squats x 20
Mosey to the football field
Partner up
Over under x 10 each, flapjack, repeato
Prairie Fire Mary x 10, flapjack
Wheelbarrow 10-20 yards and return
Visit from one of our old F3 friends a Mr. Jack Webb
Up to 6/24 when aggressive Runstopper gets to calling out the Q (more on that later)
Runstopper restart of Jack Webb from 1/4-10/40
Jack Webb – 1 Mirkens x 4 arm raises, 2 Mirkens x 8 arm raises continue until you reach 10 Mirkens and 40 Arm raises.
Remain in Jack Web circle for circle of Fire – Plank as long as possible while individual sprints around the outside of the circle. Yes that’s a long time to hold a plank so modified as needed, right arm high, switch left arm high, elbows. If you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying.
Jog to parking lot: Stop, 25 Mirkens OYO- Plank (yes, more planks) until all were done.
Jog to next pain station (100 yards) stop, 25 Mirkens OYO Plank
Jog to next pain station (100 yards) stop, 25 Mirkens OYO Plank
Repeat for another thee stops, adding only 25 Carolina Dry Docks at next station (just to give some relief to the PAX arms)
COT- yes, one final set of 25 Mirkens.. kind of a going away present from me to the PAX.
Moleskin: YHC has never had the chance to co-Q with Runstopper who was the guy that EH’d me in the first place. Q real honour to lead today with him, we thought we’d have a little fun with it so Runstopper started heckling YHC during Jack Webb from about 4 until 6 and then in mock frustration handed off to Runstopper, although YHC does have to admit that I didn’t think he would restart from 1 again, oh well, if that didn’t kill me the circle of planking sure did. Pax really hung in there and pushed it hard for 45 min, there were no 10 counts on this one. Great for YHC to see FOD whom I hadn’t seen since the BRR, looking good brother.
Thanks to FOD and Skywalker for letting YHC and Runstopper Q on this day and Cobains for the delayed back blast. For the 2 pax whose names I missed please sound off below:
Announcements:
Mentor program starting another round, can complete info on the website or talk to Skywalker.
So 5 Pax gathered in the gloom, well 4 did, the 5th joined a little later, better late than never but that doesn’t mean it won’t go in the back blast.
This being Pele’s first Q it was a pretty tough time/place to do it, however a remarkable amount of composure and ad lib was to be found in the new Q and off we went:
Mosey to field oops, I mean parking lot
15 SSH
15 IW
15 Slow Squats
15 Mountain Climbers
Line up on the line
high knees down 40 yards, butt kickers back
15 squats
Fast as you can 40 yards, run backwards back to the line
15 Merkins, recover
karaoke 40 yards AND BACK
15 CDD
Lunge Walk down and jog and bear crawl back
15 squats
Mosey to bleachers by concession or maybe it was the playground equipment, yeah that was less difficult let’s say
10-20-30
Merkins-dips-squats
Partner AMRAP pull ups +2 x 2 (an Ascent staple)
People’s chair x 3
turn over to Brew
Wall plank or handstand as the case may be x 2
Shoulder to shoulder, merkins x 5 IC
Plank and end man hop over heels until all have gone through twice
COP for dynamic stretching:
Leg circles x 10 each leg IC
The “Ballet” x 10 each leg oyo
The hip flexor stretch
Jog around the parking lot
Now to run a half mile for time (pax sound off in the comments on your time to track for next time around)
YHC ran with a Garmin and when it hit 0.5 I stopped and read my time and then those finishing after, a very strong effort by the pax in challenging conditions (ran to Harris Teeter so not flat and also had two good sized snow patches to navigate, this should make it easier to beat our times next go round)
Slow recovery jog back to campus with a plank o rama in the middle to catch all pax
Mary:
Flutters x 15
Dolly x 10
LBC x 15
Heels to Heaven x 8
Cross oblique crunch x 8 each side
Partner up, partner paddy cake merkins x 10, partner fist pump sit ups x 10 repeato x 3
short jog around the parking lot again
Look, there is 2 more minutes left, what should we do?
We all know what that means, Q calls out 10, everyone knows what it means but HT pulls one of the best Q jacks I’ve seen and starts counting down from 10, nice try but we still do 10 burpees on our own to end off
Moleskin:
A great first Q by Pele, certainly considering the conditions and the modifications he had to make (YHC saw his original plan and he did have to modify quite a bit). The pax hung in there, was a great workout with some good men. We’ll repeat the 0.5 mile for time somewhere down the road to record the improvement. So that is is on record YHC’s time was 3:18 which was 18 seconds off the desired pace so will have to get it next time. Strong effort by Pele on the run, didn’t give up and Hopper was looking pretty strong (helps to have the long legs maybe?). Passport was battling the back pain (take it easy brother, we don’t want to kill you) and High Tide despite complaining about not having his special running socks (do they do the running for you?) pulled in pretty close behind YHC so not sure what the issue is (it’s all mental, you really are pretty strong!).
An honour to co-lead today with one of the very many inspiring pax turned Q in Pele today, I’ve seen you come a long way brother, this is always the beginning and I can’t wait for Q number 2.
Announcements:
Time to sign up for the BRR, seriously you can do it and it’ll be fun
