As YHC drove into the parking lot, I found a lone KB’er in Busch and a couple of unsure pax waiting for something to happen. Even though I forgot the shovel flag this morning, we still departed at 5:30 to give everyone what they were looking for.

After last week’s exploration of Piper Glen, it is time to get back to business with the standard tempo run to S. Charlotte Middle and back. Leading up to the BRR, we will revisit Piper Glen, but it would be aggressive to do it every week.
The plan is to leave the greenway parking lot at the corner of Rea Rd. and Bevington Place at 5:15am with all PAX including both 4-milers and 6+ milers. The group will fellowship run for a 1-mile warmup and then proceed into a tempo pace for the rest of the workout. It’s an extended burn!
Prior to the run, go to http://runsmartproject.com/calculator/ and calculate your Marathon and Threshold paces. We will all warm up for 1 mile together and then hold a pace between Marathon and Threshold for the rest of the workout. PAX will leave the track to head back to COT at different times based on pace in order to return to the parking lot by 6:10am. Use the following matrix for easy calculation of when you should leave the track to head back.

Catch you on the flip side.
7 men of Outland showed up for this morning’s beatdown. 4 men went the extra mile and started the pain early slinging iron from 6:15-6:45.

Moleskin: YHC is getting this posted waaay too late so I am sure that I’m missing some of the fun that we had. Couple things of note. Several of the PAX persevered through a brutal Kettle Bell beatdown only to find that the roll into a beatdown that was intensified by the 100% humidity and 90 degree heat. Strong work brothers. Keep it up.
We’ve long wondered what type of man could sire a thoroughbred of Double E’s caliber. We had the chance to meet this legend Saturday morning as we welcomed “Walker, Texas Ranger” to Outland. In true ranger style, he chose his own path this week, as he made his way around the AO, surveyed the terrain and then joined us for a cup o’joe afterward at coffeeteeria. Glad you joined us WTR, and looking forward to seeing over the coming weeks.
Since our beloved “The Late Show” has been arriving on time the past couple of month’s we’re thinking of ending his term in office as our official tollgate indicating we’re 5 minutes into the beatdown. On a related note, Snowman is up for election in the race to take over The Late Show’s F3 handle as he’s been fashionably late the past two weeks. I think he’s setting his alarm for 7:00 just to be sure he stays in the running. Better late than never. We needed that 10 penalty burpees anyway! (We wouldn’t give you a hard time if we didn’t count you as a brother)
Drop Thrill has a 10k planned for this upcoming Saturday. You’ve been training hard and we know you’ll Kick butt.
There’s been some talk of #F3NightTrain on Thursdays. Rumor has it that it’ll be launching again this Thursday at 7:30pm from the #F3Joust site

Haggis was still recovering from his latest weekend race. He reached out to LD and myself making sure we were ready to deliver pain in his absence. Hope we did him proud.
Always great when LD leads the charge. Indian Run with a twist was a little dangerous on the thin path at the lake, but the PAX did their best.
Welcome FNG Mariposa. He made his mark by pulling on a tree branch in an attempt to move it for the following PAX, but it instead swatted at least 3 of them right across the chest.
As always thank you to the PAX for allowing me to lead. I value the time we spend each morning. Iron sharpening iron.
One year after the inaugural weekday workout we labeled Anvil, 20 men descended on the campus of Calvary Church to make our daily downpainment and receive our anticipated beatdown. Not one to disappoint, I gave my version of the disclaimer and marched us off into the gloom in order to experience some of Anvil’s greatest hits from the past year:

– When we created Anvil, Baracus and YHC wanted to create a challenging mid-week workout that utilized the campus as our “Anvil” as we pushed and beat one another into physical shape. Looking back at the last year, I think we’ve been successful. The features of the campus provide for some nice variety, a fair amount of hills to play on, room to roam “string of pearls” style, a sandbox to wallow through and a pavilion to sweat under. Without a doubt, the best feature of the location has been that which developed over time: the PAX who routinely make Anvil their workout week in and week out.
– Kotters for the delinquent backblast. To be fair, I was a bit tied up last Wednesday with the memorial service and burial for my grandfather. A couple hours after leading this workout, I spoke at his memorial service and I want to share something about my grandfather that I think is applicable to each of us men.
“As I reflect on this man, my memory of him and the role he played in my life, the first attribute that comes to mind is that he was there. He was a constant. Grandpa was a rock, when all else waivered about. He was steady. In my mind’s eye I can still see it as I follow him again through the garden in his backyard in Pennsylvania. Me, about 5 years old, as I following him through the rows of corn, tomatoes and squash. He towered up above me, blocking out the sun at times, moving with surety and purpose as he examined each plant and vegetable. He put me to work, with a hoe and rake, carrying vegetables in a basket up to grandma who would turn them into something yummy to eat. It was in that backyard that he let me drive his lawn mower (I was probably a little older than 5 then). It was on the deck overlooking the yard that we would share a snack and a birch beer or 7up when the heat of the afternoon was too much for my tired little body. It was there that we watched the deer come into the twilit meadow in the distance.
Grandpa was there for just about anybody I can think of. He was there for friends and neighbors who needed a helping hand. He was always more than willing to look under the hood of a broken down car or repair a pipe that had burst. He was there for the neighbor lady who wanted a bible lesson. He was there for my family when my Mom and Dad needed a helping hand around the house, even though we lived 3000 miles away. He was there for my grandma. For 66 years he was there for her. Think about that. 66 years. Let that number just seep in for a second. I joked with him that he better set that bar high because I was going to catch him. He told me I better, since I had married so much younger than he did.
There was a moment a couple weeks ago when Grandpa was having a waking dream and I happened to just then walk in to see him. He was confused about some facts, but there was one sole purpose in his conversation with me. He wanted to make sure that Grandma was ok. Once he realized that she was ok, and that she would be ok, he relaxed and was able to go back to sleep. Even in his last moments his heart was there for his wife.
In our world, it is a common tragedy that men aren’t there. I have been blessed to have 2 grandfathers and a father who have always been there. Being steady isn’t glamorous in the short term, but it means all the world to a 5 year old, a 36 year old boy, a wife of 66 years and all the neighbors and friends in between.”
On this Anvilversary, I want to encourage each of us to continue on. The workouts each week may or may not be epic (although they are always solid), however the true work occurs in getting up out of the fartsack and actually showing up. The achievement is doing it consistently. Once you’re here, following the leader of the day, you’re going to get in decent shape no matter what we do (especially with the way we’ve come to push and encourage each other). The same was true in my grandfather’s life — so much of his success and the accomplishments he achieved were built upon the same rock: he consistently showed up. Our workouts are important, but they are just the spark and in some ways an example for the rest of life. Showing up here hopefully should lead to showing up in all those other places in life that occur outside the gloom.

YHC’s first Q at Skunkworks provided some jitters last night, hence actually wrote this weinke out. 26 PAX including 1 FNG used google maps and twitter to find the substitute location for one of Area 51’s finest workouts. Expectations always run high at skunks. Hopefully YHC delivered.

Semi Gloss enticed YHC to sub for him in return for a free lunch. Then proceeded to be slightly nervous last night and redid the Weinke a couple of times. Actual number of redos will remain secret to avoid future heckling.
Hard to get a good glimpse of everyone when YHC is struggling to make it through, but Busch, Bananas, Fletch, Run Stopper, Crab Cake seemed to be putting in strong work.
The ten counts between sets were much needed. Thankful for all who gave 10 counts except for Cottonmouth. His Ten count is really a 3 count. Future Q’s never ask Cottonmouth for a 10 count.
There has been some banter among the PAX about whether there should or should not be running at at KB workout and if so, to what extent. Supposedly Hops had put the smokeboots to skunks last week so YHC felt the need to keep it balanced with lots of iron reps. When announced on Twitter that this was the plan last night, Brown favorited the tweet. I think because Brown is the President of the “I hate running club.” You can buy a Car sticker from him that says 0.0 (I don’t run). Point being, most PAX should have put in 400 to 500 reps with the bells plus all the cardio exercises thrown in to keep the heart rate up.
After COT some PAX discussed changing just christened TI83 to Jurgen due to him being a soccer coach at CDS, and world cup time seemed to be fitting. TI83 was a mouthful. Sound off in the comments if you have an opinion.
Sanka and Fletch decided to wear matching shirts today. It was cute.
Tclaps to Header and Stone Cold for waiting on YHC for the pre-run so that YHC did not have to sad clown 3 miles in the gloom.
Tclaps to whoever took us out. Can’t remember. Scratch n win?

After a few laps around the parking lot to allow for some stragglers (Frasier & Soul Glow) to get out of their respective vehicles, 18 men launched from SCMS into the humid morning for this week’s edition of #F3FastTwitch, the best worst hour of the week. The plan, that YHC had been sitting on for about a month, was simple. Here’s what we did:
The Thang:
Run down Woodfox, turn left on Rounding Run, turn left onto Rising Meadow and go to the top of the hill by the light post. Our job for the morning was explained to the Pax. There’s approximately 1/2 miles between the top of Rising Meadow and the bottom of Windbluff. There’s a few hills in between. We were going to run that, over and over and over, until 0600. 5 burpees at the bottom of Windbluff. 10 jump squats at the top of Rising Meadow.
At approximately 0600, we gathered back together at the bottom of Rising Meadow for a short Indian Run back to the SCMS football (& futbol) field. We lined up along the goal post for 3 sets of gassers, down and back.
Mosey back the parking lot. COT
Moleskin
Pretty straightforward today. But as promised, we got some hills…and found out that they just keep on giving, especially when you just hit play and rewind for 45 minutes. The 1/2 mile stretch between the top of Rising Meadow and the bottom of Windbluff is brutal…don’t think there’s any flat on it really. And the air was thick. So we just had to give more. No doubt we did. Don’t think anyone left anything in the tank this morning.
The guys out front completed 5+ rounds and ended up somewhere around 6.7 miles this morning. Pretty sure everyone got to +6. Rock Thrill ran in from the greenway and then back afterwards…10+ miles…don’t know how he did that. #Strong
Thanks to Hops for taking us out.

Mosey to rock pile and grab a rock you wouldn’t be embarrassed to work out with. Spandex was covered on this one as he had a beast of a rock.
Run with rock over to the track.
A race like workout started around the track. Complete 5 reps of merkins, curls with rock, & shoulder front raises with rock. Run a lap on the track. Then do 10 rep of each exercise then a lap, keep up the cycle for 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 reps. Like any good NASCAR race, once the leaders finish, complete the lap you are on and plank up. Most everyone stayed with in a lap of the leaders. Audibled at the 30 rep cycle to overhead presses from front raises as needed.
Move to wall for some People’s Chair
Grab rocks and carry them back – but throw in 25 more merkins, curls and overhead presses to round things out. This rounded things out to an even 300 merkins, 300 curls, and 300 front raises/presses. Now take your new found swole to the beach or pool and impress the ladies.
AYG across the field to the cars. No time left for Mary – sorry, do some on your own at home.

I tried to pick a few things from past Q’s this morning to throw into the mix. It’s a good thing we didn’t have tractor tires at the AO to drag around…. although that gives me an idea! Next time. My apologies to Beaver, I realized Saturday was his first post and this would have been a real tough second one. Way to hang in there, this was a hard one. We did have 3 PAX at 50+ YO who were killing it out there today.
A great hard working bunch out there who were clearly smoked after 45 minutes. Mission accomplished.
