Leatherwood Mountain Ultra Run

Trying this again folks….

leatherwood mountains jpeg

A perfect event for F3.  Enjoy the beauty of the mountains while you push yourself to the limit!  The title “Ultra Run” may put you off but take it from me if you can run a half-marathon then you can definitely do this.  There are 10 mile, 50k, and 50 mile options.  All are on trails, all will be testing.  This event most likely involves an overnight trip to the location (not far from Blowing Rock) so it will be a great opportunity for some 2nd F.

No way I can run 31 miles…!

Try it.  You’ll be shocked.  A trail run is very different from a road race because the course is unique and you are not racing against the clock in the same way that you do in a marathon or half.  Typical finish times for the 50k last year were 7-9 hours. No way to cheat on this one.  Just do it!

Event Details The Leatherwood Mountains Ultra Run will be held on the grounds of Leatherwood Mountains Resort and Stables.  Unlike most events that are held on public lands, this event will be primarily on private land.   Don’t miss it….You WON’T be disappointed!!!  What makes this event so unique is the availability of luxury mountain cabins to rent at Leatherwood.  Get a group of runners, friends, or family together and make a memorable weekend vacation.  Who wouldn’t want great mountain views and a hot tub at your convenience?!?!

It is recommended to stay at Leatherwood the night before and possibly the night after the event.  There are numerous cabins for rent.  Make it a family event and bring your M and 2.0s.  They will have a great time in the expansive grounds while you are killing yourself out on the trail.

Course Race course will take place over varied terrain in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  Much of the race will be on single track trail, but will have a mix of asphalt, gravel, and jeep trail roads.   If you have experience running in  the Blue Ridge Mountains you’ll know that the trail could change from one day to the next.  One day could be dry, the next could be muddy.

50 Mile – Course will consist of 4 loops.  There will be 3 unique loops, with one loop of 10 miles being repeated.  Gain and loss will be about 11,000ft.  Start time: 7am

50 Kilometer :  Course will consist of 2 unique loops, which will also be run by the 50 milers.  With around 7,000 to 8,000ft gain.

10 Mile –  Runners will pass through Rawhide Aid Station twice.   Race Start: 9am

50 merkins, 50 squats.  Lap around lake.

25 dips, 50 little baby crunch.  Lap around lake.

25 durkins, 50 mason twist.  Lap around lake.

Moleskin:

Didn’t take long to warm up today – great work by all pax.

Frehley’s comment: “This form stuff sucks.  What’s the point of doing right?”  When you are in the middle of 50 PERFECTLY executed Mason Twists, a good answer is not forthcoming.

Chippy on Q next week.

Huge Turnout at Devil’s Turn

17 pax braved the chilly temperatures for a man-making run this morning.  Honey Bee’s publicity efforts have really being paying off!  Come on out, test yourself to the limit, and experience the power of this extreme workout.

The Thang:

2 mile run at fellowship pace out to the track.

Different options at the track:

3X 800m intervals

8X laps at fellowship pace

Bootcamp for 20 minutes waiting for runners to finish

Moleskin:

  • Strong effort from all pax this morning.
  • Mighty Mite and Rock Thrill led the 8 lap run, while Haggis and Soft Pretzel led the 800m sprints
  • Typical times for the 800m: 3:03, 2:44, 2:59
  • Notable performances from Backsplash, Rock Thrill, Soft Pretzel, and Mighty Mite

This is how you get fit, fellas!

Devils Turn Preblast

Two options for Devils Turn tomorrow:

5:15 option: The usual – meet at the greenway parking lot by Trader Joes. Run to South Charlotte Middle School (site of Death Valley) for some track work.  Run back to parking lot for a total of approximately 6 miles.

5:30 start option: Meet us at Death Valley site for the track work only.  We’ll be running 800m intervals.

Devils Turn is a great running workout and will boost your fitness like no other.  However, the early start and longer distance may put some folks off.  Now’s your chance to give it a try!

Bagpipe goes anti-clockwise

13 men felt dizzy after this workout…

Mosey to parking lot for warm up: 30 Side Straddle Hops, 20 Imperial Walker, 20 merkins – plank – 10 more merkins.

Mosey to pull up bar area (the dungeon): 20 supine pull ups, 10 full pull ups, 10 burpees, 1 lap around loch ness.  Repeat.

Mosey to picnic tables: 5 durkins, 10 dips, 5 durkins, 10 dips, 5 durkins, 10 dips, 5 durkins, 10 dips, 5 durkins, 10 dips.

Line up for merkin/mary/sprint ladder: 2 merkins, 25 flutter, sprint to other end of grass area.  4 merkins, 25 heels to heavens, sprint.  6 merkins, 25 dolly, sprint.  8 merkins, 25 left side raises, sprint. 10 merkins, 25 right side raises, sprint.  Plank for a while, then 10 fast merkins.

Mosey to starting line and get ready for a one mile time trial around the lake.  3.3 laps in anti-clockwise direction.

Mosey back to parking lot – done!

Moleskin:

– Good core work today by all.

– Honey Bee had requested that we run in an anti-clockwise direction (some would say counter clockwise) so that we could avoid the steep downhill around the lake.  It seemed to work for him as he destroyed the field today, leading by a long way.

– Haggis was chided for his use of correct English and in a fit of pique he forced the pax had to run on the left and pass on the right.  Strangely, the 1 mile run seemed a lot more fun and a much more decent affair when performed this way.

– No Bagpipe next week.  Converge at Skunkworks with the rest of area 51.

Chippy goes nuts at Bagpipe

Haggis posting for Chipotle

The drizzle kept Mic Check from this morning’s festivities, however it  did not keep 13 other men from fart sacking this morning.  YHC decided to steal a Ground Zero themed workout and modified it to please the crowd.

The Thang:

Warm UP

25 SSH

20 IW

Partner Up for the following:

100 burpees combined followed by one lap around lake

200 merkins combined followed by 2 laps around lake

150 squats combined followed by 3 laps around lake

200 LBC’s combined followed by 1 lap around lake

100 dips followed by 2 laps around lake

More exercises were on everybody’s personalized Weinke’s however did not complete due to time.

Moleskin:

YHC seemed to hear some hatred mumbles from a few PAX members however, this seemed to be a hit.  I am sure this workout will reappear soon, maybe next time Mic Check will show up.

New Announcement:

Haggis is recruiting for a Ultra Run March 29th at Leatherwood Mountains……it is just a 50K, so sign up it should be 7 plus hours of fun.
