Flat can be hard too (except for Slim Fast)

Flat can be hard too (except for Slim Fast)

The virtual shovel flag was posted and 13 men, including several who didn’t use the BRR as an excuse to Fartsack, showed up for first time that Chelms took the Q at Fast Twitch

The Thang:

1 mile warm up jog

Three 800 meter runs at 80% of full speed (constant pace) with 1 minute break in between each

800 meter cool down jog and plank

Line up on goal line for the dessert – Burbee/merkin suicide ladder on the football field

  • Run to 10 yard line, 1 burpee, back to goal line for 10 merkins
  • Run to 20 yard line, 2 burpees, back to goal line for 9 merkins
  • Ladder to 100 yards for finish with 10 burpees and 1 squat (changed to squats half way down the ladder)

One lap cool down and back to parking lot for a few minutes of Mary while some of the PAX got in some extra work on the track (too dark – #Qfail)

Naked Moleskin

Strong effort by the entire group, especially the 3-4 who completed the BRR (Turkey Leg, Purple Haze, Strange Brew, anyone else?).  We covered 4 miles by my watch.  That is pretty good considering we threw in the suicide ladder (55 burpees, 40 merkins, and 15 squats) and some Mary.Twitter chatter Monday night was that it would be easy since there were no Mountains around Fast Twitch but that myth may have been dispelled.

YHC failed to keep the PAX together but I couldn’t keep Slim Fast down – He just kept running like Forrest Gump and didn’t finish until we were half way thru COT.   I think all the tomatos distracted him and he missed the turn off when we headed home.  It is so dark on that track that I can barely see my hand in front of my face.  Will have to implement a buddy system next time – I’m partnering with Slim Fast for some tomato watching.

The BRR guys might have thought Fast Twitch would be good transition back into regular schedule since an old man was leading.  Unfortunately for them I have not figured out how to do a recovery work-out (especially since I didn’t have to recover – next year).

Announcements:

Convergence tomorrow at The Rock for 9-11.  All other South workouts are cancelled for tomorrow.

Thanks to the pax for enjoying Skunk with me to try to workout the soreness from the BRR.  T-claps to my BRR teammates, TR and Stage Coach, for posting thinking that I would not run them.  Ha!

Special thanks to my buddy, The Nibbla for this workout.  I stole it off the website from one of his Combine workouts with some slight modifications.  Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Someone please let Tommy Boy borrow their copy of the movie so he can watch it and figure out that his character (even though not very smart) does “win” in the end.

Welcome two FNGs:  Terry (Smiley) and Will (My pleasure);  we hope you enjoyed it and will come back for more.

Great job out there this morning, fellas.  There was great effort by all; noted Geraldo and either Deadwood or Hee Haw racing each other in the sprints.

More running/sprints than we are used to at Skunk.  Trying to show the Fast Twitch boys that the Meatheads of Skunk can throw the bell around and run too!  Not sure if Busch even broke a sweat though.

Mosey back to the Vine for COT.

Moleskin:

– No breaks for the PAX today.  Fillmont looked far too strong at the start of the workout so YHC went all out to punish him.  Fillmont took it on the chin and finished strong, particularly relishing the final Mary 10-count.

– Other than Fillmont (which by now we expect), there was not a lot more chatter from the pax.  Just grumblings here and there.

– Chipotle takes the reigns next week.  Maybe some more V-up sit-ups in the plans…?

– Tomorrow is convergence day at Calvary Church for South Charlotte.

Market Timer

The Crimson Tide rolled in to Base Camp…

18 pax assembled in the morning gloom for a Crimson Tide themed painfest. But, as tweeted in the preblast, this would be at a non-SEC (aka moderate) intensity.

YHC was nearly cut from his own team, as he and Low Tide wheeled in 2 min late, but the pax was in good hands as Smash stepped in and put them through their needed warmup.

The Thang:

COP by Smash

  • SSH, IW, Merkins

Arrival of YHC and many apologies

Jog to football field with high knees and butt-kickers along the way.

YHC explained that the theme for today was University of Alabama football National Championships.  He had planned warmup reps of 15, one for each National Championship, but felt confident that Smash had adequately covered the pax.

Line up along the End Line for:

  • 4 Burpees OYO – one for each back-to-back national championship
  • Since Paul “Bear” Bryant coached 6 of the national championships, The Beast was renamed “The Bear” and the pax proceeded to celebrate at
  • 6 stations, every 20 yards,
  • 6 reps of the called exercise, planking at each end:
  1. Merkins
  2. LBC’s
  3. Speed Skater
  4. Merkins
  5. Flutter, &
  6. Squats.

Pax then moseyed to the baseball bleachers to celebrate Championships Past, Present, and Future with Circuit work:

  • Past – 25 supine pullups to celebrate the 1st championship in 1925  (YHC apologized for the high rep count, encouraging the pax to modify as necessary, and reminding everyone that the range of motion is only about 1/2 due to the second rail)
  • Present – 12 decline merkins to celebrate the present championship in 2012
  • Future – 13 squat jumps to celebrate the future championship in 2013 (chosen because it is the most aspirational and the lowest number in the future)

Rinse & repeat for a total of 3 circuits (to celebrate the 3 championships won under Nick Saban)(and, if the Future 2013 holds, AL’s first three-peat)

After about 1/2 the pax had completed the circuit, YHC called a time audible due to O2 deprivation and thinking we were running short on time (we weren’t).

YHC asked the pax for participation in our next segment by offering to answer their preferred question, either: (1) under how many coaches has AL won a national championship, or (2) in how many decades has AL won a national championship.  The pax wisely chose #1, the coaches.

Mosey to the outfield for a visit from Jack Webb to 5, based on the number of coaches under which AL has won championships.  (For dinner party conversation and general well-rounding, the pax was informed that AL has won championships in 8 decades.)

While in the outfield, Mary came for a visit in the form of timed planks.

  • Both Elbows – hold :45
  • Left – hold :30
  • Right – hold :30
  • Both – hold :30
  • To acknowledge that winning championships is not a perennial occurrence on the Capstone, the pax did one rep of Cumberland County Viaduct per year of the longest drought between championships, 20 in total (1941-1961).  (For further edification, it was shared that 17 yrs were spent wandering the wilderness between the Stallings and Saban championships.)

Mosey back to parking lot, where YHC realizes his timing was off by 5 min, and we can now complete the plans previously skipped by the audible.

  • Backpeddle across the parking lot and jog back
  • Karaoke across the parking lot and back
  • Shuffle across the parking lot and back

And, in an act of humility and respect, YHC led the pax in a salute with Burpees, one for each year, of arch-rival Auburn’s national championships – 1  (Scam Newton-era, 2010).

COT

Moleskin:

With The Tide on a bye week, YHC was having withdrawals this weekend and attempted to fill the void with other games – USC v UGA (good one), Panthers (3/4 good), Packers (flashes of goodness) – but nothing quite tastes the same. So, YHC decided to share with the pax some UA trivia as we suffered through O2 depletion, a common occurrence at some schools for other reasons (‘cough’ – Auburn).

Good work out there by all and good natured accommodation of my theme. It was fun for me and hopefully everyone got a good workout too.

I saw several Ascent pax continuing to climb – Robin Hood; Pele.

Two FNG’s with strong first showings – Bird Flu; Marshall – keep coming out guys and you’ll definitely reap the results.

Base Camp FNG, Spackler, was among the pax, leading much of the way, esp during the Bear (aka Beast). Not surprising, as he’s a bit of a beast himself.

Thanks again for humoring me with the Alabama theme.  I expect some payback come basketball season (rumor is, AL is considering starting rec league basketball in 2014).

It was an honor to lead the pax today, as always.

Thanks for the closing prayer, Smash.

P.S.  for those curious or in need of additional trivia, the championship years to date are:  1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, & 2012.

  • Flutter 20x
  • Dolly 20x

Moleskin:

Boy it was tempting to totally fartsack in the sub 70 degree weather and just drink coffee on the back porch.  However, good thing’s come in 5’s and 5 strong men of Outland  resisted the temptation to post.  Hardwood was even true to form by pulling into the lot with — wait for it — a truck bed full of — wait for it — you got it, a truck bed full of Hardwood samples.

We actually started with 4 during the warm up and in ZOOM’s in Swiss Miss to join us.  YHC still isn’t quite sure on the tardiness but he thinks it was something about forgetting his uber tight equestrian  riding pants #knickers and knee high boots #theywearfunnyhatstoo.

We lost Hardwood on our recon nature run who decided to blaze his own trail after tweaking an ankle.  Get on the mend brother and give it a rest.  Hope to see you out next week.

Moleskine:

YHC posting this on behalf of Abba.  T-claps to Abba for a well-organized, pain-infused beatdown on his first Q.  The SSH/Squat thrust combo was a bit unorthodox yet a good change of pace.  The 10 minutes of burpees was neither unorthodox nor good, rather unsavory!

Good work by the pax this morning.  Guys were pushing themselves even with some fighting through injuries.  Rather quiet crowd….still sulking over yet another underwhelming Panthers performance?

People’s Chair followed by People’s Choice Mary was painful as well. #powertothepeople

  • Editorial comments by Joker… I was not in attendance this morning, but rumor has it that that there was much discussion regarding Dora’s svelte physique and Wolverine-style beard.  Dora apparently suggested that his beard has already received too much notoriety in recent backblasts.  But, Dora, the beard is downright “EPIC” [I observed it on Saturday, so I know of what I speak… and with two more days of growth I can only imagine].  In fact, the PAX total should be adjusted to 21, to take into account that your beard has taken on a life of its own.

Great to have 2 FNG’s… Jake (Peaches) and Armin (Bourbon). Great work out there, and can’t wait to see you guys back at your next workout!

Strangebrew was missed… hope he is enjoying some cool mountain air this morning!
