Preamble:
Despite getting older and, hopefully, wiser, there are still decisions that are made ahead of time that are potentially bad ideas. In themselves, they may be perfectly fine…but they provide that window or opportunity for excess and / or crossing the line. Hosting a neighborhood “Pre-Game” party at 3:45 is that kind of decision. Taking the bait when offered the Q-spot for the day after the Super Bowl…also that kind of decision, but one that held me somewhat accountable. Other bad ideas include continuing to run up the middle against the top rush defense…but I digress. 11 guys total showed up at DMZ to try to put that game out of their memories.
THANG
Take off toward Carmel Middle. 5 burpees at each driveway on the right. Mary in front of the school while waiting on the six. Mosey to rock pile and grab a rock. Mosey back to Camilla with rock. Instructions to run to that road that connects to Colony Morrowick with rock, stopping at each cross street (5 total stops) for 10 overhead presses, 20 squats, 30 Russian twists. Mary and planking at Morrowick.
Switch rocks – fast guys get a heavier rock – and head back up to Innsbrook, stopping at each drive way on the right for 10 curls. Stop at Innsbrook (top of the hill) and drop rocks on the sidewalk. Call for Jacob’s Ladder with 10 merkins at the bottom, increasing burpees at the top. Audible to stop after 5. Some flutters waiting for the six.
Pick up rocks, head back to Carmel Middle, stopping at each cross street for 10 tricep extensions and 20 LBCs with rock. Deposit rocks back at their home behind Carmel. Quick mosey back to home base.

That’s the Cam Newton press conference version of this morning’s workout #47seconds. Small group, so nowhere to hide. YHC quickly realized that on the way back up Camilla #firsttoworst #rockselection.
Feeling rather pissed off after #SB50, and knowing that running with heavy stuff is YHC’s kryptonite, had to go sadomasochistic today (just google the meaning, Turd – but don’t image search). Shades of Swampfox on the opener, which was like a cement mixer churning up the wings, pizza, and beer of yesterday. YHC almost lost it…even got those questionable burps.
Blame Mike Tolbert for us carrying the rocks today. At the school, YHC chose a relatively rectangular-shaped rock of moderate size (more big than heavy), held it up as an example, and said “a rock roughly yea big”. Cheese Curd couldn’t stand not knowing the usage of the rock, or can’t see, so allow him to blame poor rock selection, not being slow, for hanging out near the back. Orlando and One Eye were up front on the trip down to Morrowick. Snowflake went heavy – unfortunate for YHC to select his rock for the return trip. Free from the constraints of carrying something, Hairball smoked the Jacob’s Ladder. YHC stopped him just as he was lapping the six. Notably not near the front was DMZ’s own subscriber to Lids “Hats of the NL Central”.
Expectedly not present was SG, despite this being a wheelhouse workout for him. Guess those garage doors aren’t working yet.
May have gone a bit into OT, but gotta feel good about the accomplishment. Covered over 3 miles, which included close to 2 miles toting the rock, plus a few exercises.
There were seven of us this morning. Of that, I am sure. This is what I think we did:
THANG
Run the HT mile – avoid ice and large holes.
Run to the large playground – 10 knees to elbows, 20 dips
Run back the way you came to the sidewalk. Lunge walk x10 each side, 10 merkins (continue alternating until you reach the other driveway to the school).
Run to the other playground – 10 pull-ups, 20 squats.
Run back to the sidewalk the way you came. Lunge walk x10 each side, 10 merkins (continue alternating)…
Repeat several times then run the HT mile again, but with the added twist of surprise Mary at HT.
MOLESKINE
So yeah, there were seven of us this morning. We ended up forming groups around the initial mile finish, which provided some 2nd F and made the seemingly endless lunge walk more endurable. That was a lot more merkins and lunge walking than I anticipated. I think 40 merkins each way, so yeah…lot of merkins and lunge walks.
No Sundancer despite the Iron Mike / Talk Box car pool (two just isn’t enough to qualify as a clown car). McGee aka Horseneck was there and deep six all morning. Only one of those statements is a complete lie. He doesn’t live in SC, or even Union Co, as I was lead to believe. I didn’t recognize High Tide (shh…though in his defense he promoted Meathead on Thursdays at COT) until 2/3 of the way through. That beard, man…if he wasn’t a nice guy, I’d probably say he could join a Just for Men commercial, but he is a nice guy, so I won’t say that. I also won’t say that Hammer appeared to be pulling him along most of the morning. One Eye went beyond the stipulations found in the “EZ Rings Safety Handbook” with both reflective vest and kids’ head lamp – no blinky light #notBRRseasonYet. He also put up with yet another week of a ton of lunge walks. YHC struggled this morning, but after some time away, definitely appreciative of the boost provided by the Pax. This thing we have is something that is easy to take for granted.
Only announcement was about Meathead, I think.
After 10 hours driving the famdamily back from the “happiest place on earth”, YHC feels like WIB nailed it today except YHC needs to stretch out the legs. Twisted double shaft fits the bill.
That’s one. See how many you can complete by 6:06, then run the HT mile again.
If Uncle Si (see comments) wasn’t aboard another flight (no, not really), I’d have the Google Earth image photoshopped to show you the smile.
Nine for second running of the bulls, or something like that, this morning at SOFA WIB.
Tough morning to post, especially after enjoying a few of a friend’s grapefruit Sculpin-cloned homebrews and watching the end of the Clempsun / Bammer game last night. Weather was a bonus.
THANG
Partner up and run the HT mile. (Attempt not to fall into the hole in the sidewalk near HT, narrowly avoiding an even colder, wetter start to the morning). Continue past the school to the fire hydrant.
Partner wheelbarrow to the parking lot, switching as needed.
Head to the playground for 10 pull-ups, 20 merkins, 30 Russian twists (each side)
Mosey to the Bull ring – sprint the straightaways and burpee broad jump the turns.
Lather, rinse, repeat – most got +/- 3 full circuits, then re-run the HT mile.
MOLESKINE
Another difficult morning at SOFA WIB. Every workout is designed to be full body, and this was no exception Burpee broad jumps were the worst. We went six months without recycling this one because it was so awful the first time. Today wasn’t any better. Thanks for creating, and shameposting, Talkbox.
The cold perhaps made the run slightly worse. YHC took off at the outset, aiming to go sub-6:30, and then slowed considerably after narrowly avoiding the sidewalk reconstruction project. Lower mileage of only +/- 3.5 today.
Partnership of Swiper and One Eye led the circuits. Voodoo’s heavier than he looks. SG contrasted that to himself, #humbleorselfdeprecating, and attributed that to muscle. Nice to have Snowflake #respect join us today, which made One Eye feel positively young. Also, as the video intends to reference, we were missing a few regulars today, including the other site Q, who only 36 hours earlier had committed himself to the “SOFA-Fecta”, whatever that is. No one really knows. Best just to say that they were missed.
Good work out there today, gents! Handing the keys over to Daisy next week, so we will all anxiously await what he creates.
Talkbox created this thing (which means he can’t FS out of it), and it is one of the few workouts that has litrally (intentional misspelling) made me curse…some variation of Love yourself. We haven’t recycled this one in the six months since, which should tell you something. In TR parlance, this is about as close to “workout so hard you will surely die” as I’ve experienced, and I don’t believe I’m overselling it in the slightest. Mileage will be lower than normal, a welcome respite for Sundancer after 4 miles of hills at DMZ, so if you’ve been putting off the challenge of the toughest workout in A51 on Tuesday that meets at an elementary school on Rea Rd, this is the one for you.
THANG
I can tell you from experience that despite being a short track, the burpee broad jumps grow to suck – a lot….so place some outsized importance on horse-whispering ability in your partner selection. I had to remind Brushback to breathe last time, which coincidentally may have been the last time he breathed without some form of crup, walking pneumonia, or other lung disease. It’ll be good to get him back out tomorrow.
Until then…enjoy the YouTube video (link in case it doesn’t insert properly):
Eerily reminiscent of last week, weather-wise. Pulled into the lot early and Fabio from Greenwood, SC was already there. Semi-Gloss rolled in at 5:28, answered a call from Mother Nature, and we hit it.
Thang
Run the HT mile. YHC first one back to the church, no GPS today but I’d guess 7ish minute pace, so I grabbed the rocks. With the deluge, I didn’t expect the ants, so that was a “nice” surprise. Carried them back across to OP East lot.
Semi and Fabio stayed with rocks while YHC ran to east playground for 15 knee ups. Rock exercises were press, curls, squats, and merkins.
YHC got to 100 of each and +/- 135 knee ups, which are being felt today. Sure that SG and Fabio accomplished more…
At some point near the end, Semi and Fabio moved to the overhang beside the school. We threw in some wall sits with air presses to 50, shook it out and repeated. Ended with another running of the HT mile.
Moleskine
Weather was very reminiscent of last week, even hydroplaned at the same spot on Rea Rd (albeit going slower with no standing water ahead). Nice to have Fabio with us. It took me awhile to figure the name, but guessing it was that majestic mane that drew the name? He had the misfortune of running at about the speed of SG, so he had to listen to him all morning. YHC missed most of that.
Terrible numbers the last two weeks to end the year. We are a fair weather bunch, apparently. That doesn’t diminish the first six months’ accomplishments though. We hit nearly 5 miles in a 45-minute workout twice while still working in 200 merkins, squats, and LBCs. We ran about a mile backwards, twice, finally naming the nameless workout that will forevermore be known as Maria Maria. We burpee broad jumped half a mile or so with the Blue Falcon. The workouts have been incredibly difficult, purposely, and reading Daisy’s comments about the culture built at Base Camp, I hope that we will continue to develop a competitive culture of pushing / pulling / “encouraging” each other to go faster / further / harder…because the workouts won’t get easier.
Cheers to the New Year, Gents!

Combo post – backblast from last week and pre-blast for tomorrow:
I had actually written a backblast for last week, but it was long and rambling, even for me (yes, there was a Vonnegut reference and a Happy Gilmore quote in the same paragraph #winning), appropriately titled “Worst workout ever” #allthingstoallpeople. TL:DR version is my car hydroplaned on way there, only Semi and I posted, and we mailed it in and went for Coffeeteria.
And despite that, somehow Sundancer is feeling fat, so like beaten eggs into batter, we’ll fold the “worst workout ever” that never happened in with more running and Knees-to-Elbows.
Thang
Partner up, opposite speeds attract. Run the HT mile. First partner back runs across to the church and brings a lifting rock back to the OP mini-track.
Partner 1 does rock exercise while partner 2 runs to back playground for 15 true, good form, Knees-to-Elbows. Run back and flapjack.
Partners combine for 200 presses, 200 teabag squats, 200 curls, and 200 merkins.
After finishing, or at 6:06, return rock and re-run the HT mile.
That’s all to close out the year.
Kirk
There were six of us standing around in a circle (no rain – thanks, #Cantorre), waiting for the clock to move three more minutes to 0530 when Brushback rolled in and completely ruined the even numbers. Guess there would be a group of 3 today for 2-man grinders.
Thang:
Mosey down Swan’s Run, take a left, go around the “we don’t want to be a cut through street” barricade, take a right, step into a deep puddle, jump a fence, squish around the green, and stop on the cart path.
P1 does exercise, P2 runs to almost the pond. Flapjack repeatedly.
Partners combined to complete 100 burpees, 200 merkins, 300 squats, bunch ‘o knee ups (no group quite finished 400).
Run back.
Moleskine
Very simple workout that hopefully delivered a little bit of everything. The group clocked about 3.6 miles, and apparently when you run back, there is a hill on Swan’s Run. Must have missed it on the way out.
Workout like this is as much a mental grind as physical. The run was probably 250-300 yards, if the 100 yard marker was right, which was just quick enough to get some exercise reps in and barely enough time for the heart rate to drop before it was time to run again. This was not the easy welcome back that I wanted after a weekend away. Definitely struggled today.
Noteworthy performance from #camoshirt. Couldn’t see him, but you could hear his words, and bodily functions, from near and far. I managed to make it the entire workout without saying a word about Saturday to Brushback. Curd brought the light today. He’s figured out the alarm clock, but couldn’t turn off his interior light…then provided the only headlamp for navigating across the fence. #TetanusFTW! Daisy was there. Didn’t hear him utter a word…just kept his head down and worked. I think he was the only one of the triumvirate with SG and Curd that counted reps. I’m still unsure how SG manages to sweat so much while doing so little. One Eye seemed like he barely broke a sweat as he carried the heavy lifting of our team reps. Good times out there today, boys. We’ll be back at it next week.
Kirk
Supposedly going to be kind of a nasty morning tomorrow…may want to sleep in.
YHC debated debuting the Wolfpacker (probably too soon) or the Angry Short Man (Champagne and Runstopper can debate or wrestle over that title), but those will have to wait for another day.
Don’t want to ruin the surprise on the locale, but we are going off campus for 2-man grinders.
Crisp morning with a couple of guests this AM for a visit to The Urologist. The naming of this workout may make more sense if you read here or here.
Anyway, good morning to get to work, and that’s exactly what 9 of us did, promptly at 0530.
THANG
Partner up and run the mile to HT and back to OP. Mosey to the playground at the back of the school.
Partner 1 does 10 pullups, 20 dips, and squats until partner returns. Partner 2 jumps the baseball fence (careful, or you may actually end up at the Urologist) and does 40 LBCs at home plate.
When partners meet, 5 dumbocrats each. Then flapjack.
Lather, rinse, and repeat until 6:06, then run the mile to HT and back.
I believe most groups got in 6-8 circuits (I won’t do the math for you) with total mileage in the 3-3.5 range.
Moleskine
I see this often questioned, but in short, a moleskine is a journal
Total grind out there today with only a few exercises on repeat. Dumbocrats always suck, but even in small-ish sets of 5, they really add up to a total suckfest. Pullups are consistently one of the hardest exercises. After leading yesterday with a bunch of WW2 situps, the LBCs were pretty brutal by the mid-point. Fortunately no one had any injuries going over the fence.
We had a couple of site FNGs today from Metro. Chairthrower made the trek down from Sedgefield and did not ride his bike. In all my time in SoDil, I don’t think I knew that he owned a car. Post-BRR training, and now he’s flying out there. Strong work today, and thanks for visiting. Will you give Doobie and Santa Maria directions?
Egypt, who lives way closer to here than CEC, must have been running late for Ring Run, or the rumors of his on going beef with Tardy are true #BadBlood. That’s actually not true, but I just wanted to both call out Tardy for not making it down from Gov^2 and throw in a TSwift reference. Anyway, the headband made the virgin voyage down to OP, and couldn’t place / recognize Swiper away from Metro. He moved south – now McGee….one more YG and it’s officially an exodus. He dogged it on the initial mile, but then matched it on the final mile while YHC was dragging #mediumpace. Too bad @Bushwood wasn’t there #soccerarmscup.
Loved the push from Krypto on the run back, when YHC was admittedly dragging, which Voodoo didn’t fail to point out. Appreciate the accountability, gents! Also, apparently you have some heavy feet, Krypto – not Iron Mike heavy, but still. One Eye was the Jim Furyk, steady-Eddie, again. Brushback finally made it back out, and it was good to have him back.
Sundancer brought the tunes out there today with a Halfbaked (Cheech and Chong for the respects) inspired play list. Swiper was a huge fan, going so far as to skip past more Grateful Dead. No bongos or bat guano today.
