A new AO launched almost a year after #F3Anson launched. The Anson launch was during a Tropical Storm and now we launch #F3Monroe in a hurricane. #GJtradition Thanks to Hurricane Matthew, I’ve got FNGs dropping like crazy. But then, hope arrives. 1 FNG (Friendly New Guy) forsake sanity to brave the hurricane. No wait, 2 FNGs. Now it’s on. Let’s go!!!

What do you do during a Hurricane? You run to the High Ground of course.
Run up the hill to the flagpole.

– It’s a hurricane. Rained the entire time. The hill was slick. The field swampy. But 34 men ignored danger, accepted being soaked and followed me for a hour (felt like 2 hours).
– Best nickname for the hill I heard was Hotdog Hill for the guys willing to run down it. #dumb #Iwasoneofthem
– So grateful to pax from Fort Mill, Anson Co, Gastonia, South Charlotte as well as the Union Co guys who came to support this launch. I am thankful for you men for your support.
– FNG Bundy (Evan) did great out there (even in the wind jacket) and was a total shock as I didn’t know him before today and he just saw it on social media and said ‘Why not!?’ Knowing nobody and show up from a post on social media during a hurricane. #HIM (High Impact Man). Youth Pastor who made sure to let us know his first love is God and he’s married w/ children. Thus, Bundy! Short for Al Bundy from Married w/ Children. Already planning to be back next week with others. #beastmode
– FNG Blowout (Will) was busting it out there. I knew he was in good shape already (he’s in the Sunday School class I teach) but he was beasting out there. Got named blowout as he is a driller and we were working with Deepwater Horizon and then Chelms got us to Blowout. A really great guy that is another #HIM already. And he HC’d (Hard Commit) himself yesterday when the rain messed up his plans. #strong
– Horsehead mocked me the whole time. #hategrowing
– My signature squeaky cadence showed up. Another solid reason I’m named after Mike Tyson’s Punch Out
– We’ve only scratched the surface of Belk-Tonawanda park. There is lots available to us (some actually flooded today) and we aren’t restricted to just the park. Hint Hint
– Great to see Electric Slide back out. One of the early #F3UnionCo guys.
– And yes, Viper (my Dad) was there so I may have been the oldest 2.0 in F3 today. BTW, he turns 60 this November #doublerespect
– Let guys know and bring them out. No Hurricane next Saturday on the 10 day forecast.
Appreciate you guys letting me lead. It’s humbling to lead such a group of men.

F3 Union first began in Indian Trail and steadily moved South and West from there. We then launched F3 Anson. In between sits the county seat so it’s time to give it away to Monroe.
What: F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship and Faith. It is a peer-led boot camp style workout.
When: This Saturday (10/8) at 7 AM
Where: Belk-Tonawanda Park
Who: All men are invited regardless of current physical condition. You don’t get in shape to come to F3, you come to F3 to get in shape. If an exercise is too difficult, you are free to modify to another. If you need to take a minute to recover, there will not be a clipboard carrying meathead screaming at you. You’ll find F3 truly means it when we say ‘No man left behind.’
How much: $0. Core value of F3 is these are always free workouts.
Why: This is the important part. The why of F3 often starts out for men as an opportunity to get in better shape. It will be tough as it is a boot camp style workout with rotating members of the group leading the workouts. So, each workout can be completely different than the one before and will test your endurance as it isn’t a ‘Do 10 reps and rest’ workout. Nothing wrong with that but that’s not what F3 is. The challenge of a tough workout is what we call the First F or Fitness. After posting at a F3 workout for a while, men start to build friendships with the other guys at F3 as there is something about suffering together that builds friendships. Those friendships then become what brings men out workout after workout. This is the Second F or Fellowship. And from there, the question starts to become, what can I do with these guys to help the world around us? This is the F3 view of Faith or the Third F. It’s a view of ‘I’m not the center of the universe. There is something greater than me at work.’ These combine to make F3 or Fitness, Fellowship and Faith.
What you’ll need: A pair of exercise gloves and exercise clothes.
So you now have all the details as well as the purpose. From here, it’s up to you to show up. I can promise you this, there is not much greater satisfaction than that moment when time is called and you’ve made it through. The main verse behind F3 that you’ll hear often and see in practice at workouts is Proverbs 27:17 – As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Let this Saturday begin the sharpening process.
Glass Joe
No one volunteered so you have no one to blame but yourself. It’s Union County which means the strange starts even before the workout. Hairband used the women’s bathroom before we even started which led to some calls for a rename to HB2. He was adamantly opposed which means it will likely stick at some point. Some guys saw the tweet and brought their headlamp. Well done. You’ll need it for this adventure. Let’s go!

Mosey over to the playground where there is light for some station work followed by a run.
Stations:
Decline Merkins, Swing Donkey Kicks, Steps ups
Run: Here is where it gets weird. Two run options: 1) Around the Block or 2) Through the trail in the woods. Watch out for clowns, needles and that camper behind the house. *At your own risk*
Three times through with reps of 1) 20, 2) 25, 3) 30. First run had most of the guys going to the woods. Nothing says strange like a bunch of grown men running on a trail at 5:45 AM through woods at a park near playground equipment with Horsehead laughing hysterically the whole time. The next two runs were around the block. Had to normalize this thing somehow.
Till everyone gets back: 1) Planks then 2) 3 count down squats IC x35
Let’s get weird again. Indian Run/Lunge Walk through the woods. We ran near the camper for safety purposes.
Back to near the bathrooms where HB commented that there is a smell. This is after he and HH had used the bathroom before the workout. Ya think?

It’s UC so it was weird. We’ve mostly avoided the Breaking Bad trail due to a unhealthy fear of clowns, drugs and twisted ankles. Really believe now that we’ve missed out on opportunities for weirdness. Needs to become a regular addition.
There was complaining about running which I largely ignored while giggling over my plan to #makeUCweirdagain
Shepherd got lost in the woods first time through. He came out a disturbing palish color. Think Blair Witch.
After the first run through the woods, I see HB standing around in the light. His fear overcame him apparently.
This is no doubt a crowning jewel of a Q. No thanks necessary.

As we did a few Hairband miles to warm up there was a little anxious chatter about the contents of the bag slung over YHC’s shoulder. I assured them it was nothing more than a phone. At which point Jabberwocky informed us he had a phone tracking his mileage. I then quickly deposited my bag back in the truck. As we circled up for a warmup I explained that Jabberwocky just saved us all from carrying a rock around campus. (If I had to carry a phone, we were all going to carry something). They quickly began to speculate what they could do to eliminate other parts of the workout. Speaking of which, here’s the layout….
We warmed up with a variety of the following: Peter Parkers, Parker Peters, low slow squats, merkins, side lunges, windmills.
Then over to the buses for a little cheese weave, pausing along the way for some plank work.
We cruised over the elementary school for a quick seat on the wall and a rundown of what was next.
Over to the playground, with some lunge walking along the way, for the following:
(5) rows on the swings
(10) merkins
(15) squats
run 1/2 lap
repeato for max rounds till Q calls time
To the parking lot for some lunge walk work, then an indian run to the gravel drive behind the middle school. Out into the field for some animal crawls… bear crawl approximately 25 yards, mosey back to start line, then panther crawl. (coordination is not our strong suit).
Mosey to the courtyard wall to catch a seat and our breath, then to the hill in front of the middle school for some 5’s.
Bottom of hill 1 squat, top of hill 4 pike pushups
bottom of hill 2 squats, top of hill 3 pike pushups
bottom of hill 3 squats, top of hill 2 pike pushups
bottom of hill 4 squats, top of hill 1 pike pushup
Over to the covered patio for more 5’s, this time with rows on the handrail and pushups.
Over to the grass for some bananas and superman work. #crowdpleaser
Done.

Grab your water and off we go to green pastures led by Shepherd. Whether he wanted to get this over ASAP or ate his wheaties, I don’t know, but he was two lengths out from and pulling away. Indian run a lap around the parking lot as we dodged cars, then a little Lt Dan to make up for yesterday’s visit of Jack Webb. (I lost track of the count after my quads went numb – maybe it was 8 or 9.
Handoff to The Late Show and over to the obstacle course.
A quick tutorial on how to use the kettlebell and chains pulley system hook up. You load your weight (1,2, or 3 25# kb’s) and then pull the kb’s up and then lower down. That’s 1.
The man on the pulley is the time keeper while the pax does the called exercise. When the man on the pulley completes 3 he chased us down, we all head back to the start line and another man takes a turn on the pulley. The exercises (from what I recall and in no particular order) were: lunge walk, bear crawl, sprints, jump squats, partner carry, panther crawl, partner decline merkins.
A 3 man team collects the kb’s and back to the flag while the pax collects some cones that we (sadly) did not have time to utilize.
Meet at the flag for some plank work and done.
Thanks to HB for taking us out.

Huge work by Jabberwocky and The Count, both coming back from medical timeouts this past week.
Kudos to Happy who did everything with one arm today. Some bailing wire and duct tape will fix that shoulder up toot sweet.
EE had to split early… Had to go home and shower and get his legs iced down to kick that bass drum for an (outside) church event today.
Good to see Good Luck, strong work, looks like climbing the hills around Asheville has him back into football shape.
Good hustle from Bernanke, he lapped us all on the 4 Corners, and nonstop work by our resident, self-labeled Clydesdale, Hairband.
I think Woody got more of an ab workout during the partner carries than he bargained for.
Shep led us to green pastures, but we didn’t find any rest.
Glass Joe should run for president.

BRR training is on. From the Monday evening heat index death march to EEs baked ziti dish run of hills and mileage yesterday. Time to balance it out a little bit. Who needs KBs when you have Madison’s Cinder Blocks. Bless you Madison. There are 10 men (and 2 2.0s) but only 8 Cinder Blocks. I’ve planned for this. The Q will not fail you.
Cinder Blocks carried to the field and we get into a circle for a little Jack Webb. Here’s the deal: We will keep the ratio at 1 merkin:4 cinder block presses (2:8, 3:12, etc.). When done with that round of air presses, pass the cinder block to your left and 2 guys get to do just regular air presses on the next round. Call it a blessing if you will if you don’t have the block especially for the 10:40 round. 2.0s just do regular Jack Webb. #lucky
Carry your cinder block to the road where there is a tire on both sides of the road. Here’s the plan: 8 guys do AMRAP exercises with their cinder block while two guys flip the tires 5 times down the road and back. 2.0s use the big tire laying on it’s side for jump ups, decline merkins, etc.
No way I remember all the exercises right but will try my best.

Squats

– Hairband texts me late yesterday that he can’t make it because he has to take his 2.0 to soccer tryouts. About 30 minutes later, Smokey texts me that he’s coming to Overdrive so he can take his 2.0 to soccer tryouts. #busted #truthalwayscomesout
– Madison apparently nearly collapsed during Windmills. Not sure what was going on but felt it better to not ask. #notaprofessional #gavethedisclaimer
– EE circled back to get The Count who apparently forgot that a 5:30 AM workout starts at 5:30 AM
– How in the world does EE end up without a cinder block on the 10:40 round of Jack Webb? Life’s unfair sometimes
– Apparently, everyone interpreted a mosey recovery run as a slow mosey. Well, everyone except for Smokey, EE, Ranger and YHC. Madison let us know about the confusion. Sorry brother!
– Who is that guy with the bandana looking like a beardless Duck Dynasty brother? Kotters to The Count
– Glad to have Smokey out. Good to see at least one soccer father who is committed. Cough…HB…Cough
– Great to have The Bus and 23 join us along with Posse and Ranger. Ranger and 23 are best friends so cool to see both of them pushing each other already.
– Speaking of Posse, dude has mad tire rolling skills. Almost rolled it all the way through the woods before chasing it down.
– Woody seemed to really enjoy getting to know Mr Webb. He is a swell fella.
– Bernanke/Nomad just busted through the whole thing with no complaints. #wisdom Well, they weren’t really close to me so they might have been complaining but I didn’t hear it
– Always good to start and finish with Mr Webb. I seriously had a ‘Oh that’s sore’ moment picking up my water glass at breakfast.
– Think that’s all I got for this non-normal GJ Q. Best of luck trying to accomplish anything with your arms today.

The objective of the timed exercises was to focus on form and not just knocking out high number of reps. Believe it worked well as guys pushed themselves hard (insert TWSS line here). There were frequent challenges from the pax as we got around the 50 second mark as to whether the Q had actually started the timer, which only added to the Q’s enjoyment. Apologies for dropping the ball on the music. Didn’t realize how disappointed the pax would be to miss out on some good southern rock and blues. It was great to see 10 strong show up in the heat ready to go and I appreciated the honor to lead today. Thanks to GJ for taking us out even after I trampled on his name-arama. – At one point we wondered where Smokey was at and realized he was still sitting near the bathroom. Sort of like smelling salts. He seemed more awake after sitting there for a while. Was EE there previously?
– Speaking of EE, he was apparently in a line for the single stall at Bo. Or he got a double Bo to Go. Not sure but apparently, he figured Bo was the only spot with a bathroom and McDs/HT/Convenient Store just won’t work.
