Cinder Block Surprise

Posted on behalf of Utah:

21 of Area 51’s finest arrived for YHC’s V-Q. Being in the Clydesdale category, I felt the need to run and share the experience of carrying extra weight with the group but let’s not spoil the surprise ending.

Warm up-

After weak attempt of disclaimer and inaccurate directions were given(clearly demonstrating my leadership skills) we did a mile warm up mosey to Rea Rd and Hwy 51. Continue to our new favorite hill, Five Knolls.

The thang-

Partner up, size/speed does not matter(story of my life). Partner one runs the two mile Five Knoll route and partner two runs the almost two mile Rea Rd to Colony and back route. Meet partner and flapjack.

The usual suspects were burning up the hills. Strong work.

A round of Mary at the entrance of Five knolls waiting for the six(YHC).

Mosey back to Cary Ridge while avoiding two cars cresting the hill. Q fail, safety first always use cross-walks. I attribute the excitement to the final surprise waiting for us. Could it be burpees, indian run or all you got? Not on my watch brothers. Get in groups of five and let’s play everyone’s favorite game- carry the cinder block back to the launch!

The look on Hairball was priceless. I heard him say “sweet, cinder blocks!”. I know what to get him for Christmas.

At that point YHC grabbed a block and ran figuring anarchy could erupt at any moment.

Tough way to finish but great teamwork was on display.

Moleskin-

The entire group worked hard today so not a whole lot of mumble chatter. Although I thought I kept hearing someone say “best Fast Twitch ever”.

Make sure to thank Cane for talking me out of the original plan-cinder block carry from Five Knolls back to launch.

They say you never forget your first Q. My legs and shoulder will happily forget this one.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead a great group of men.

Great Q Utah. Almost 7 miles including those Knolls. The padded “Ballantyne” cinder blocks were a real treat.

Solid Q, brotha. Any Q that keeps yer hands clean at FT is A-OK in my book. Trip to visit LC in 5knollz was a bonus!

Way to step up and crush your VQ Utah. Sorry to miss this one. Sort of. I am sure Haze appreciated running and carrying. His favorite.

I can usually count on a fellow Clydesdale to keep things reasonable. Not so this morning. Despite Cheese Curd and I heckling Utah the whole way to Rea, he pressed on for the longest warmup ever (non-Imperial Walker division). This was my first run of the full Five Knolls experience. Haze broke the news to me on the gentle downhill part that the nasty hill that Strawberry took us to a couple weeks ago at the Rock was looming. Awesome. Good workout though – hopefully the injuries will stay away and I’ll put FT back in the regular rotation.

Other observations:
– I may or may not have done a dive roll on the way back on Five Knolls. Stupid raised manhole covers.
– Utah and Icicle were faster while carrying the padded cinder block than without it. Beasts.
– Hairball said something about his legs being fried from the off-books hill workout on Monday, but then proceeded to roast everyone.
– I heard Early Bird catching up for over a mile before he finally passed me on the way back from Dunkin Donuts. I like to think he got faster, not that I got slower.

Nice work Utah. That was a tough course and the blocks at the end were just added joy. The padding was appreciated but I did feel a little more like RFYL out there than F3 with those pads on the blocks.

I burned so many calories this AM that I just crushed a big burrito for lunch #Starving. Not sure I tasted it, just dropped it down the gullet like a Pelican.

I’ve had four meals already – breakfast, 2nd breakfast, pre-lunch, lunch.

Hey man, that’s just my version of 2nd-F. You know before the NBA games you see the super stars getting stretched out by someone… that’s what I needed man. I knew I could count on you to not be intimidated by my request. After all, you dress like Mike Tyson for your workouts… black shoes and no socks… you just need a shirt made from a towel with a cut-out in the center for you to slip over your noggin.

Also, what was that smell at the top of the hill on the way to the Dunkin’ Donuts? I’m pretty sure I have cancer now.

That was last night’s BBQ chili from Carowinds.

Superb VQ. I don’t mind five knolls if we only have to hit it once. My upper back and right shoulder are going to remember the cinder blocks for the next few days.
