Ladders work both ways.

19 pencil-necked geeks posted to Meathead this morning and left as swollen Adonises. Just ask their Ms.

We had two site FNGs and an F3 FNGs, so everybody got a buddy (TR and TL, Brown and High Life and Witch Doctor and Retread). Thanks for helping out. After a quick disclaimer (more or less), here’s what we did:

The Thang:

General warm-up:

  • SSHs x 20 IC
  • 20 dead stop swings for TR
  • IW x 10 IC
  • Merkins with R hand on KB x 10 IC
  • Mountain Climbers x 20 IC (This is where Brown started sassing the Q, asking if this was Death Valley. I think it was Bananas that called for Tunnel of Love, but YHC just pressed on. #cryingontheinside)
  • Merkins with L hand on KB x 10 IC

100 swing KB warm-up:

  • 10 swings, 1 press per side
  • 15 swings, 2 presses per side
  • 25 swings, 3 presses per side
  • 50 swings, 4 presses per side

The Ladder/Pyramid:

2 of each exercise per side, then 4, 6, 8 and back down 6, 4, 2. The exercises were:

  • Swings
  • High Pulls
  • Snatches
  • Cleans
  • Racked squats

When finished, repeat KB warm-up. Most PAX got through this again or got close. YHC made it through the first 50 swings and 6 presses per side before the forearms gave out.

Mary:

  • Russian twist x 10 or 15 IC (can’t remember exact count)
  • Flutter with KB press x 15 IC
  • Louganis x 10 IC

Done.

Thanks to recent birthday boy Busch for the take-out.

Moleskine:

A great turnout for Meathead this morning. Some new faces and plenty of experienced bros. Except High Tide, who I think is in San Francisco for work.

Welcome to Turkey Leg and Retread. Retread is a recent F3 FNG that apparently likes lifting heavy stuff as well as running around at Jevlar. Turkey Leg is known to many as a runner, but he did a great job this morning at his first KB workout.

FNG High Life (Tim M.) was EH’d by Bananas. His nickname was creatively derived from his last name, which is not disclosed for privacy reasons but you can probably deduce from his nickname.

Thanks to the more experienced guys for showing the new guys the ropes. FNG High Life was crushing it with coaching from Brown. Turkey Leg was getting some sage advice from Tiger Rag, although I tuned it out once I heard something about thumbs and butts. And Witch Doctor stepped in to give Retread some assistance. Plenty of experience to go around, so don’t be afraid to post.

As usual, Bulldog and Fletch flew through all exercises and TR refusenicked as he saw fit. However, he redeemed himself by completing some of the ladder with doubles (along with Brown and Bananas and maybe Busch). Strong work.

Speaking of ladders, the Q got some flack for calling the main set a ladder instead of a pyramid. Last YHC checked, ladders work both ways and you rarely climb one without coming back down, so we’re going with ladder.

Thanks to Brown and High Tide for the opportunity to Q this morning. As always, it was an honor to lead a great group this morning. From what I could hear on my side of the circle, there was plenty of mumblechatter from a veteran crew. Hopefully everyone got their money’s worth and can no longer feel their forearms.

Announcements:

  • Mud run sign ups end on 10/3. Find the info here.
  • EO Thirst at the USNWC on 10/4. Find the info here.
  • 3rd F at Chick-fil-A on Fridays. They’re reading a book called “Respect and Love” or “Love and Respect.” Apparently, there’s a chapter on intimate relations coming up that you don’t want to miss.

To the #SpamHead (or even, heaven forbid, the #SoyHead) a ladder is a conveyance used for ascending and descending. Probably to get his designer cat off the roof of his McMansion. Or to hang curtains for his wife.

To the #MeatHead, however, a ladder means heavy weights, lower reps until just short of failure, then starting over. 1-2-3-4 / 1-2-3-4 / etc. Lower reps, heavy weight, high intensity = strength. A pyramid looks like this: 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1. Higher reps, lower weight, more volume, no stops = higher work capacity (“endurance”) and a pump. It’s not about the shape of the set but the intent. In that sense, what we did today was a pyramid. Whatever you call it, it was nasty.

Turkey Leg (more of a drumette, really) proved a quick study on technique. The #ThumbButt cues were no small part of his advanced progression. Other, more subtle cues were not as effective; like when, at a KB workout, I did KB exercises in lieu of bodyweight exercises…

Smoker – especially when combined with the unnecessarily aggressive pre run.

Great Q Voodoo – Ladder/pyramid/scaffolding or whatever it was had us hating the idea of going back down the backside. A few of us were nearly highfiving after getting up to 8 only to find out we would have to reverse course with the same reps. Grips were tested and forearms were smoked.
