Are we ever going to hit 5 miles????

Are we ever going to hit 5 miles????

The Thang….

With mud run and the BRR looming YHC decided that the only way to satisfy the loyal Brave constituents would be to put at least 5 miles in today. The only key is that we dont stop moving if you finish first you start an exercise.

We set off from the Vine and headed towards the corporate parking lot out and to the right. There we had the COP.

20 – SSH

15 – IW

15 – Merkins

We then set-off to Ballantyne Park Way and took a right. We headed down to Rushmore and headed toward the Bull Ring. On the way we took a quick stop at the first pond on the left for some bear crawl, lunges and more bear crawl. First one done starts the Mary and we finished once the 6 had joined.

Then keep moseying to the Bull Ring, but on the way stop at the pond on the right. Head to the top of the hill for 10 merkins then to the bottom for 10 squats. Then run a lap around the pond. All this times 2.

Then to the actual bull ring. there we will complete 10 6 count burpees in cadence at three of the four buildings. Then off to the bridge towards the Met Life Parking garage. Stop at the bridge for some peoples chair and shoulder work. Then we are off again.

Do the Tree Slalom on the way then up the parking deck with some Mary at the bottom. Run to the top. This is where we had our only 10 count then back down the deck and some more Mary. Then off to the AO the same way we came. cut through by Loch Ness. This is where YHC realized that we were not going to make my 5 mile goal. So how do we fix that? With a quick lap around the loch. Then head to the AO. Still not quite at 5 miles so we have to run around the roundabout and back to the AO. Ohhhhh man, we are still not at 5 miles. So we do a lap around the cars and hit the 5 mile mark.

Luckily we had 2 minutes left for Mary.

Everyone pushed hard on this one. I really appreciate the chance to lead these fine men. Thank you Mic Check, Haggis and Cable Guy. They were continuously in front of me and lead the exercises while we were waiting. I was pretty smoked for the rest of the day. I hope you were too.

Go to Hills. Run. or Run.stop.Run

At 0515 on Thursday morning, 22 PAX launched from the 4Mile Creek parking area at Bevington and Rea Rd.  2 more PAX rolled in after COT, but we’ll count them despite their aversion for inclusion – 24 PAX total at this weekly installment of DevilsTurn.

The THANG:

  • Quick overview that it’s Piper Glen Hill week.  There will be something special, so regroup at the neighborhood entrance.
  • Start the first mile through the Apartment loop
  • Regroup just past 1mile at the entrance to Piper Glen
  • Here are the options:
    1. Run at Threshold Pace (http://runsmartproject.com/calculator) for 1 mile on the course of your choosing.  There will be a tiny non-reflective orange cone in the darkest shadow in the left gutter or the road to mark 1 mile.  Rest for 1:00 (or up to 1:30 to allow regrouping with others), then repeato to next cone.  There are five 1 mile segments on the 6.5mile course.  There are three 1 mile segments on the 6mile course.  There are two 1 mile segments on the 4mile course.
    2. Run at Marathon pace on the course of your choosing.
  • After your last 1mile segment, cooldown to COT at 0615.

Moleskin:

  • HoneyBee has done an admirable job sacrificing his own run by putting out turn signals for this course via chalk arrows on the road each week.  However, this is a tiresome process that YHC didn’t want to engage in (or get mounted by Mr. Brady).  Instead, we took a leap forward with technology to compensate.  Jury is out if the maps are helpful or the format needs to be redone (smaller paper, laminated, better descriptions, etc.).
  • Here are all of the routes in a single document – Google Doc download.  Here are the Strava courses:
    • 4mile course in Strava – an update to the past 4mile course that makes this 4+ miles.  Includes an extra hill.
    • 6mile course – the traditional Piper Glen course that HB has chalked out dozens of times. It’s really only 5.9 miles, but who’s counting (other than Outback and MT who made sure to get some extra).
    • 6.5mile “double hill” course – hill climbers get the Piper Glen Dr hill
  • A strong group of Frasier, Mr. Brady, Bout Time, Honey Bee, and Clippy took on Option 1 – at least mostly.  Each 1 mile was ticking off in 6:00 to 6:30 per mile.  Apparently Mr. Brady doesn’t like to wait around for a minute and induced others to walk into the next mile.  Or, the Q didn’t explain it well.  Basically, we were setting out to run five 1 mile Threshold pace intervals and get no more than 1:30 rest (standing around if you want) in between.  The 1-1:30 rest gives some flexibility, otherwise you’re going to be running these on your own as each runner finishes 1mile at different times.  In then end, only Frasier and Clippy took on all five 1mile intervals.  Not to blame it on Mr. Brady (but he’s getting a lot of facetime in this BB), but when he said, “you guys go ahead” just after starting the 5th interval, the other part of the group hung back with him and took a little off the throttle on the last one.  #mindgames
  • Haggis tore into the first mile, but was having none of the format.  Still finished well ahead of the first Option 1 group, so he was moving out there.
  • Not sure how many others took on the Option 1 either due to lack of explanation, lack of finding the cones or having the distance on their watch, but this was a tough morning to run – hills never change but the 73 degrees F and 94% humidity wasn’t helping.  Comparing this to last week when it was 66 degrees F and 78% humidity.  Any improvements or close efforts to last week would have been HUGE!  Given the stop at the Entrance to the neighborhood, it gave all PAX a chance to CHARGE in on Old Course and set some PRs.
  • Notables were several PAX at least taking the 6 mile option including Huggy Bear, Semi Gloss, Strange Brew, Hairball (with some bonus hills on his own course), Champagne, Cheese Curd (at least he took a 6mile map) and OutbackTussaud (they run so close to each other, they are a couple now – sorry Mr. Bean).  Some others may have run it, but if you’re not on Strava, it’s hard to prove!
  • Suggestions for next time to put blinky lights on the Mile Markers are a really good option, and surely the early morning dog walkers won’t call the PiperGlen Rent-a-cops thinking that someone wants to blow up their mailbox or is marking the next house to “hit”.
  • YHC appreciates everyone pushing themselves and those that took on the Option to try something different even though it may have seemed like a Run/Walk.  Thank you to HoneyBee and LongHaul for the opportunity.
  • Thanks to Long Haul for the takeout.  It’s great seeing you back out there brother!

The Lost Boys

Here’s how this one went down:
Sunday – Thursday night – the PAX and YHC ignore all messages that Jevlar was going back to CCS
Friday AM:
05?? – Blazing Saddles rolls into ArboABC lot listening to who knows what
0522 – YHC rolls into the same lot and seeing only 1 car, thinks “I should have looked at twitter last night”
0522-0528 – Blazing Saddles and YHC talk about how we were clearly in the wrong place and that construction must be done at Joust or Kevlar
0529 – Lex Luther and Balky roll in and double our numbers. Lex mentions that we are the Lost Boys and the workout has a name
0531 – we roll out a minute late into the gloom

The Thang:
Mosey to the park for some COP:
All Exercises IC:
SSH
IW
Mtn Climber
Merkins

Mosey to the hill on the road for some Triple Nickel – from Stop Sign to 1st Speed Bump, Merkins at the bottom and Squats at the top

Mosey to the small parking lot for some 7’s – lunges and decline merkins at the top of the hill

Back to the field for some Mary: LBC’s Flutter, Russian Twist, Flutter, Heels to Heaven, Flutter, Sit Ups, Flutter (with rotating Q for the non-flutter exercises)

Mosey to the back parking barriers for a quick circuit – 10 steps ups, 10 dips, run to building and back x3

Mosey to the back wall for some Peoples Chair, Arm Raises with Calf raise recovery on the curb

Finish up with 3x AYG in the parking lot

Moleskine:
1) Balky and Lex had the wheels on the AYG at the end
2) Blazing Saddles was strong out there for just being out a short time. Was asking about Saturday workouts so look for more from him
3) I’ve been solo sad clown due to work travel and vacation since 8/10 and it was great to be back with the PAX
4) It’s back to school time and a good reminder to all the PAX that #ReadingIsFundamental
5) Always an privilege to lead

Carrying of the Bells

Caroling Carrying of the Bells

No rest for these 8 soon-to-be-weary gentlemen who showed up at Overdrive.

The Thang

Let’s roll out for a quick interstate phenomenon known as “The Hairband Mile”. Circle up, partner up and bring the bells… cause we are heading out!

COP (in a roundabout way)

With Shep’s guidance we made it into the rear courtyard for some people’s chair, railslide, handstand, and a warmup of side straddle hops and imperial walkers.

Continue the mosey to the elementary playground, stopping off for a quick plank while a pet rock was picked out.  Partners took Q called turns carrying the kb’s.

The deali-o

With your partner (and only one partner working at a time) complete:

100 Burpees
then
100 KB g2o (ground to overhead)
then
100 broad jumps

Partners may partition the reps as they like (with a max of 10 each turn), but the non-working partner must be in the rest position for the reps to count to the total.

Resting positions:

Burpees – KB overhead
KB g2o – hanging from the monkey bar
Broad jumps – plank on elbows

Mosey back the way we got there and circle up for a few crowd sourced plank variation core exercises.

Done and thanks Happy for taking us out in prayer.

Moleskine

After considering volunteering to carry around kegs of tar for the roofers YHC thought it best to stick to the original plan.  Solid work by all present.  I saw some modifications being done which is exactly what the pax should do!  The kettlebell handoffs during the mosey and the max of 10 reps per partner on their turn were meant to encourage good form and provide a mental milestone to work towards as we chipped away at the 100’s.  We ran short on time, so when the first team hit 100 on the g2o’s time was called and we moseyed back.  It was dark and I was focused on sucking in as much wind as I could get.  My memory of specifics is a bit foggy so please chime in if I overlooked anything.

Visit Grandma on your Birthday

After the summer relocation due to the track and field renovation, the Jevlar pax was back at CCS.  Header planted the shovel flag firmly in the earth and 26 of the South’s finest posted in the gloom this clear, warm and humid morning.  YHC tweeted a clue to the theme of the workout…Richard Petty, Nascar, track-work, etc?  It would reveal itself soon enough.

Mosey down to the brand new football field, which was in prime condition ready for tonight’s big game:  Charlotte Christian vs. Charlotte Catholic #fridaynightlights

The Thang:

SSH x 20

Low Slow Squat Jump x 20

Groiners x 15

Merkins x 10

Burpees x 43 (OYO) Heart rate up now!

Time to Visit Grandma…oh sweet Grandma, how we’ve missed you:

Split the pax into 2 groups for 7s on the Mountain:

Pax 1:  Top- Pullups, Bottom- Jump Squats

Pax 2:  Top- Merkins, Bottom- Jump Squats

Flap Jack (after some Mary while we wait on finishers)

Back to the Turf:

Pax 1:  Frisbees Hairburners to 43 yard line (there it is again) and back

PAx 2:  Plank while individuals take turns kicking a field goal (make it= 100 yard mosey, miss it= to the Blue door and back)

Flap Jack- modified for time

On the goal line (abreast) for GASSERS (100yds) x 6 (I think, maybe 8, lost count due to O2 deprivation)

Jailbreak back to parking lot

COT

Ye Olde Naked Moleskin:

Ok, so the Arbo did it’s job this summer, but YHC was glad to be back at CCS.  Field looks great, track is even better but no lines yet so we stayed off it.  Can’t wait to watch some good ol High School Football tonight.  Joker, Runstopper, and YHC will be there if anyone wants to join us.  Hopefully, Stopper will keep his shirt on.

Observations:  (post comments below on other things YHC missed)

YHC tried really hard to test the limits of the “talking” Busch.  Not sure what exercise it would take to stop him from talking….43 Burpees- no, Gma Mt 7s- no, Hairburners- no, Gassers- maybe?  God Bless him, he is just so happy to be out there with everyone, he just has to socialize.  YHC just hopes that he doesn’t mind if we don’t talk back to him.  No questions please Busch, unless we can just grunt back.

Yeti was there repesenting the faculty of CCS and of course showing us old guys how young he is.  #Strong  Hope to see more of the faculty out in the gloom at some point.

Puddin’ was sweating…..but I do believe Mr. Brady did the wring the shirt out and got the “make the puddle” prize. #shocker

Great to see my old Mudrun racing teammate, Backdraft out this am.  His boys go to CCS, so it’s good to have another CCS dad at this AO.

Field Goals?  the group YHC was in did fairly well.  Saw some solid kick right down the center of the uprights.  #fridayfunday

Witch Doctor was liking Grandma Mt.  She put a beating on the rest of us.  Grandma’s get upset when you don’t visit them enough.  Header, remind all the Joust Qs that.

Great turnout this am.  Thanks to all for joining YHC in starting off my 43rd bday.  Yep, the Theme.  Could not think of a better way to start off the day than with a good group of friends like you guys.  OK, enough of that sobby stuff.  I hope that was a good beatdown for you.

By the way, come on out to The Rock tomorrow if you want another dose of some fun.  TR and YHC are set to Q there.  We’ve got a good ole fashion Skunkworks type kick in the teeth for ya.

Annoucements:

MudRun signups are open- try to have your team ready but if not you can sign up as an individual

3 Min Hard is Harder Than It Sounds

TWSS

7 pax showed up fulfilling YHC’s prediction, for the first time an FNG posted at Mountain Goat and actually seemed to like it, crazy.  Noticeably no one joined YHC in wearing the metro uniform but tht didn’t deter me from carrying on regardless.  Speaking of carrying on…

The Thang:

1 mile warm up to the end of Strawberry Lane and back to the parking lot for some dynamic stretching in professional runner style but without the duly noted and disclaimed professional.

Mosey back to the speed bump in front of the school on Strawberry Lane as the starting point for 6 rounds of 3 min hard (1.5 min out, 1.5 min back) to recover as a group for 2 min.  The wrinkle is that the route out is primarily downhill which unfortunately turns into an uphill on the way back which makes the second 1.5 minutes more difficult.  It seemed as if the watch started to malfunction as the rounds progressed as the recovery felt shorter and the runs felt longer.

A 10 or so min cool down jog was then adhered to with the accompaniment of the Carpenters Superstar courtesy of TR’s phone, this was actually the most sensible tune to come out of the phone all workout, you would have had to have been there to hear some of the others as I’m not sure I could even tell you what most of them were.

NMM:

It was interesting that on the first interval significantly more distance was covered in the 1.5 min out than the subsequent intervals, no names shall be named as I think this happened to almost everyone.  Note that Benny Hill (see TR’s tweet) was also apparently a believer in intervals of a similar and yet different kind.  Great to see so much effort out there, Honey Bee remarked (and YHC wholeheartedly agreed) that after Swift and Devil’s Turn this just hurt.  In full disclosure this workout was essentially completely re-purposed (stolen) from Bratwurst and slightly modified so Cobains to Bratwurst for that.  It was pointed out that EACH interval should have a second by second count down from 5 before starting (thanks TR), YHC will work on that for next go round.  Welcome to our FNG Bobsled who was opportunistically EH’d by Honey Bee after a previous Devil’s Turn, really great to have you out!
Great takeout by TR to make up for his earlier mumblechatter

The Illiad – An adventure to the Bermuda Triangle

21 strong men gathered early for their weekly dose of Centurion.    Four men (will give Snowflake full credit) started early with Kettle Bell work (KB) while three put in a pre-run (PR).

The Thang:

COP – SSH X21 (each member of PAX gives their F3 name on one of the counts), Merkins X10, Staggar R X10, Stagger L X10, CDD X10

Jog over to parking lot across 51 for some Mary – Dolly X15, Flutter X15, Rosalita X15

Jog to base of Palantine for some Bermuda Triangle – run up to top of Palantine for burpees, run down lane and around office building on right for dips and decline merkins, run down to street for jump squats, and back to start – Rinse and repeat two more times with 15 of each exercise in circuit 1, 10 in circuit 2, and 5 in ciruit 3 (Thanks to Hops and his correction to the call of 3 by the Q – as Mermaid noted, it was only 2 more – glad he didn’t say 50).  Plank till the six finishes.

Jog back to the parking deck at the school for some deck work.  Figure eight running the stairs and the deck, ramp work with jumping lunges at each turn up to level 4 and back down to 1, and incline/dedcline gassers X4.

Back to starting point to finish with LBC, Diamonds and wide arms.

Naked Moleskin

Humid morning and early start with KB left the Q gassed at the end.    Great group this morning and good to see Mermaid back up in the front.  Runstopper also put in a strong showing on the Bermuda Triangle while Bout Time gets no credit for being in the lead group since he’s a Hate.  The rest of the PAX pushed thru the humidity and the oven that looks like a parking deck.

Hops was fortunate that the Q’s miss on the third round of Bermuda Triangle was off by only 2.  If it had been 5+ then the PAX might have sacked him at the top of Palentine.

Welcome FNG Iliad (see below excerpt from internet – that’s how I know it’s true).  Strong work for first time out although you look like you were pretty prepared showing up with a triatholon shirt on.   Did you beat Brushback on all the runs?  After reading the summary below I thought about changing your name to Hector or Agamemmon and could be convinced to change if any of the PAX have a strong opinion.  However, it was an adventure just to get to Illiad so maybe appropriate.

As always, YHC is honored to lead such a great group.  Thanks to Hops for taking us out with a strong prayer.

Announcements- Mud Run sign up on F3 web site.  Mermaid is Q for Area 51 so see him for questions if the web site doesn’t splain it enough.   He probably could use some help so don’t wait for him to ask – step up and volunteer – THIS MEANS YOU.

Illia – How It All Goes Down

In the tenth year of the Trojan War, tensions are running high among the Achaians (a super-ancient name for the Ancient Greeks). First, the priest Chryses comes to ask their leader, King Agamemnon, to release his daughter, whom Agamemnon was holding captive. When Agamemnon refuses, the priest prays to the god Apollo to send a plague against the Achaians.

After nine days of plague, the Achaians assemble again and demand that Agamemnon give the girl back. Agamemnon eventually agrees, but only if he gets to take Briseis, the girlfriend of Achilleus, the greatest warrior of the Achaians. Even though Achilleus gives her up, he becomes so enraged that he refuses to fight any more. That and he prays to his mother, Thetis, who happens to be a goddess, to pull some strings with the other gods so that the Achaians will start getting defeated in battle and realize how much they depend on him.

Achilleus’s mom definitely spoils him. She gets Zeus, the king of the gods, to agree to Achilleus’s request. Sure enough, the next day the Trojans make a successful counterattack, led by Hektor, their greatest warrior. Several days of violent fighting follow, at the end of which the Trojans have the Achaians pinned against the beach, and are threatening to burn their ships. At this point, Achilleus’s best friend Patroklos asks for permission to go into battle in Achilleus’s place. Achilleus grants Patroklos’s request, and even lets him wear his armor. Patroklos’s gambit is successful – when the Trojans see him, they think he must be Achilleus and become absolutely terrified. The plan goes off the rails, however, when Hektor kills Patroklos – with the help of the god Apollo and a minor Trojan warrior named Euphorbos. Hektor then takes the armor off Patroklos’s body.

When Achilleus learns of the death of his friend, he experiences terrible grief and swears revenge. He sends his mother, Thetis, to get a new suit of armor made especially for him by the fire-god, Hephaistos. The next day, Achilleus rejoins the battle and kills many Trojans, including Hektor in a one-on-one battle.

But Achilleus isn’t satisfied. For the next few days, he continually abuses Hektor’s body in gruesome ways, even after Patroklos has received a proper funeral. The gods don’t like this, and send a message down to Achilleus telling him to give up the body. When the Trojan King Priam – Hektor’s father – comes unarmed, by night, to ask for his son’s body, Achilleus agrees. The two men eat together and experience a moment of shared humanity. Achilleus grants the Trojans a grace period to perform their funeral rituals. The poem ends with the funeral of Hektor – though we know that soon Achilleus will die and Troy will be captured.

Finally, A Decent Time To Recover – Pre-Blast

So, have you found the intervals at Mountain Goat to be too hard?  Me too, that’s why tomorrow we will be recovering almost as long as we are running.  Is there a catch? Why yes there is, thanks for asking, the catch is that we will try and run a bit faster on the interval.  Ideally looking to target our “I” pace from the https://runsmartproject.com/calculator/ otherwise known as your 2 mile race pace, or in the vernacular, an uncomfortably hard pace.  Ideally we’ll do this for 6 rounds of 3 min on, 2 min off for you watch setters out there, this is of course following a normal warmup and preceding a normal cool down.  We will work to keep the course mostly flat without being on the track.

Triple the Fun

Moleskin:
A great group today. Everyone gracious to try a few odd twists on exercises.  I had no idea whether an Indian Sit/Run (Sit/Crawl?) would work, but it ended up being kind of fun. And also… Wild Turkey should be in the Olympics or something for crab walking. I think he may crab walk faster than he runs. Thanks to Mic Check for leading some Plankorama while I gasped for air. Thanks to Gecko for helping me figure out my phone. Could you come over to my house and help me program my DVR? Many guys put in some hard work today. I would name you in this part… except I was usually in the back and couldn’t see who was way ahead of me. Thanks, guys – an honor to lead and I enjoy every time.

Announcements:
No big announcements. Or maybe there was, but I wasn’t listening. Oops.

PreBlast- Jevlar Back at CCS

The converged Joust and Kevlar (aka Jevlar) is back at Charlotte Christian School tomorrow (8/21/15).  YHC will be your Q for the return “home”.  Come on out for those of you who have missed Grandma or if you wanna smell the nice new turf and get rolled in new dingle berries.  We’ll get to try out the new gridiron before the boys take the field for Friday Night Lights (Christian v. Catholic- epic battle).  There will be a theme of some sort tomorrow, who will be the first to guess it?  #FunFriday  C ya in the gloom!  0530 launch

*remember to park near the Upper school lot and all the way down near the dumpster
