What’s in that trailer? A bunch of burpees.

What’s in that trailer? A bunch of burpees.

30 of Area 51’s finest including 3 FNG’s descended upon Death Valley and came out stronger and dirtier men.  With a mysterious trailer in tow captivating and possibly intimidating the early pax, YHC rolled into the parking lot with a plan to inflict some pain.  Here’s what we did:

Mosey down to track, run one lap and circle up in the center of the field.

Circle of PAIN:

10 burpees
SSH x 30
9 burpees
IW x 27 (actually 28)
8 burpees
LSS x 24
7 burpees
MC x 21
6 burpees
Peter Parkers x 18
5 burpees
Slow Merkins x 15
4 burpees
Heels to heaven x 12
3 burpees
Slow Wide Arm Merkins x 9
2 burpees
Dancing Chill Cut x 6
1 burpee
Slow Diamond Merkins x 3

Mosey one lap around track and back to center field for instruction on the circuit:

10 burpees OYO
Corner 1: Squat Jumps x 10
Corner 2: Dancing Chill Cuts x 10
Corner 3: Merkins x 10
Corner 4: Heels To Heaven x 10
1 lap around track

Rinse and repeat with each corner going up in increments of 10. Burpees stay at 10.  Total of 3 rounds.

Back up to Parking Lot for some quick Mary led by Sussudio:

  • LBC’s x several
  • Flutters x several

All Done

Ye Naked Moleskin:

First off, it was a great group of guys out there today.  Everyone that I saw was seriously putting some work in out there and sweating up a storm.  With this being my first Q at Death Valley and knowing it was going to be a large crowd, I hope I was able to put something together that was solid/painful for everyone.  Thank you all for the opportunity and the support out there.

I was seriously pondering tweeting out pictures of the trailer last night just to gain some intrigue, but it was so much better just to show up and let all the speculation begin right in front of me.  I knew I had raised a few eye brows when before I had even gotten out of my car, Semi-Gloss was walking over to me like a manager coming out of the dugout to tell me I’m being relieved.  Although, I’m pretty sure he was just hoping the trailer was stocked full of booze.

Ahhh, the ol’ burpee ladder to kickstart a Death Valley workout.  I was one leg away from channeling Stage Coach, but I knew I would not have survived it myself.  I had enough going on trying to work my way down by 3’s as pointed out by several pax.  I do believe we ALMOST skipped a round of burpees, but you can thank Gummy for reminding me.  Gummy was the one by the end of the workout that had dirt (we think) all over his forehead from his vigorous Heels To Heaven.

It was clear that when I divided the 30 pax into two groups that one was smarter than the other.  Of course it was the group that YHC was NOT a part of as that group decided to keep their clothes relatively dry by doing all exercises on the nice dry (sections) of the track, while the other group (including myself) did all of our exercises on the nasty, rain soaked, skin clinging, dirty soil of the field.  Cobains to all in my group.

At one point I thought I was going to break off to jump into the other (smarter) group, but I didn’t have the energy to keep up.  But I did try to give Horsehead some instruction to take over for me if our group was to finish up first.  He immediately responded with, “Why are you telling me this?  I’m about to pass out!”  Classic!

Great job to our 3 FNG’s Bear Cat, Interpol, and Deflator!  I don’t recall any of them slowing down once.  Gummy, what kind of consulting do they do???  Seriously, whenever you guys are in town, you are welcome to come by and get your shoes dirty!

Thanks to Sussudio for leading us all in some Mary and for being an inspiration to each of us on your dedication to exercise and outright ability to make the rest of us look ridiculously out of shape.  You are a beast and Florida doesn’t  know what’s coming.  Safe travels and send us a post card!  Oh and let us know when we can all visit.  Hope you have enough room for a few hundred pax!

Any other observations, please chime in on the comments.

Until next time,

Prohibition

Preblast: Devil’s Turn – Hills!

It is hill week at Devil’s Turn.  Do you have what it takes to run at a high rate of speed for ~55 minutes over the biggest hills in Area 51?

If you are looking for a #redpill, this is it.

We launch from 4-mile creek greenway parking lot at corner of Rea Rd. and Bevington Place at 5:15 am.  We will warm-up run together and then run the hills of Piper Glen.  Chalk arrows will be placed appropriately to keep people on the straight and narrow.  4 and 6 mile options available.

Bring your headlamps and blinky lights if you desire to see and be seen.

Measuring Up (Fitness Test part 1)

It was 11 men who were brave enough to come out to one of the toughest AOs in the land, and knowing full well we were going to test where our fitness levels stood.  Here’s what we did:

Brief mosey to lay out the 0.2 mile+ loop that will be used soon for the timed run

COP

  • IW x 20 IC
  • Merkins x 10 IC
  • LSS x 15 IC
  • MC x 20 IC

Feats of speed and strength

  • Max pull-ups: start from full extension; chin to bar in order to count rep
  • The Holy Mile: Timed Run (1.1 mile): 5 loops of 0.2 mile+
  • Max hand-clap merkins
  • Max military sit-ups in 2 mins: shoulder blades must touch ground and must come up past 90 degrees to count rep
  • Timed Sprint lap: 1 lap of 0.2 mile+ loop
  • Max burpees in 2 mins: chest must touch ground and at least a slight jump to count as rep
  • Max box jumps in 2 mins:
  • Elbow plank hold for 2 mins: no piking or dipping!

Done!

Mermaid and I discussed bringing a fitness test style workout to Anvil, as we had seen this done at Metro’s Jungle.  I think what we put together today did a good job of measuring strength and endurance, and will work as a good measuring stick that we will revisit periodically.  It was designed to allow for brief rests followed by maximum effort for short bursts.  Hope everyone enjoyed and got out  of it what they saught.

If we aren’t out here to get better then i don’t know why we’d come out.  Though Van Pelt did make the comment that once you hit Respect it’s about maintaining.  Good perspective.  So this can be used as a baseline for improvement and/or maintaining a certain level, but do use it as a marker to strive to meet or beat in the future.

Welcome to High Tide making his first Anvil post.  Welcome back Rehab and congrats on your first…get some sleep!  Mermaid and Runstopper: hope those knees get better soon.

Solid work with all of the pax pushing themselves.  Always great to see.

Sincere takeout by Hopper.

In full disclosure, here are my numbers.  Shoutout with your numbers in the comments.

  • Pull-ups: 19
  • Timed run: 6:48
  • Merkins: 25
  • Sit-ups: 62
  • Hot lap: 1:05
  • Burpees: 31
  • Box jumps: 64
  • Plank: Passed with flying colors (and the shakes)

Until we meet in the gloom again. Aye.

Nothing better than Wheelbarrows and Rocks

25 SOBs showed up to the Maul for a beat down from The Commish, but The Commish had some family business to take care of, so I was happy to step in and lead the PAX. Here’s what we did:

The Thang:

COP – IW X 20, Side Lunge X 10, Merkins X 20, Mountain Climbers X 20

We moseyed to down the Murderhorn to the Club House parking lot and Split into 2 groups. Group 1 headed over to the picnic tables and did two rounds of 20 dips and 20 Durkins and Group 2 went over to the playground for 2 rounds of 10 pull-ups and 30 Merkins, flapjack once your 2 sets are complete.

We then lined up at the bottom of the parking lot for the following:

  • Bear Crawl the length of the parking lot, wait for the 6 by doing LBCs
  • Crab walk the length of the parking lot, wait for the 6 by doing LBCs
  • Partner up, P1 does wheelbarrows the length of the parking lot, wait for the 6 by doing flutter
  • P2 does wheelbarrows the length of the parking lot, wait for the 6 by doing flutter

We then moseyed over to the rock pile at the bottom of the Murderhorn for a single count speed rock workout. All the PAX grabbed a massive rock for the following: 20 curls, 20 presses, 20 tricep extensions, 20 upright rows and Carolina drydocks IC X 10, rinse and repeat the routine.

We then moseyed up the Murderhorn to the parking lot and circle up, 10 burpees OYO and Mary. LBCs x 20, Dollies X 20, Freddy Mercury X 20, Heels to heaven x 20, Crunchy Suitcase (aka Loogie’s Lap dance) X 20, Protractor

COT

Moleskin:

Being honest, YHC received a text from The Commish a few minutes after 5am that said he had something pop up that he needed to take care of. About 25 minutes later, I was standing around with a bunch of SOBs trying to come up with something to push my brothers. By the end of the workout, we seem to have worked most of the major muscle groups covering less than 2 miles of running.

There’s no place I’d rather be than in out in The Gloom with the fellas. It was an honor to lead the PAX this morning.

Mosey home for COT

MOLEskin
Well, that plan was pulled out of left field. Before starting, I had taken a look at the back gate to make sure it was open. Negative. Locked and chained. Thought about making the crew jump the 6ft high fence, but I know Baracus can’t jump that high. So, we did the burpee mile instead. I think everyone really enjoyed it! #HeavySarcasm

The DipKin was brutal. Doesn’t sound that bad on paper but my arms were shot after that. I thought about going back up the ladder but that was a pipe dream. Simple and very effective.

Having to change a workout on the fly, not that bad. Having to change it twice, woah! PDS is serious about their security. They even lock their tennis courts at night! You know, just in case someone gets the itch to play tennis at 3am in the pitch black. As I was trying to figure out what to do next, I passed Starfish when I turned around. STARFISH! Yes, we will do a starfish on the field.

The leg crusher was fun. Double D’s has some wheels when he turns it on.

Baracus and Big Easy had the guns out this morning. Big Easy has some serious guns. If I was Baracus, I would have felt really insecure. Big Easy is also getting faster out there.

Covered 2.7 miles this morning. Great job by all.

Thanks to Tesla for the takeout.

Annoucements:
F3 Kernersville (aka K-Vegas) starts soon. Send names to Starfish.
F3 Boondocks (Mint Hill) started this week. Start EH’ing guys you know.

MOLESKINE
This workout looked good on paper and it looked horrible at early AO scope of the grounds. When the celebrity pax started rolling in YHC knew it was a go on the plan. Being creative will get you in a heap of trouble if it fails. This workout was planned so that fast runners get what they need and then some, while the six getting extra run time. It sucks regardless of your playing level.  I heard one of the pax call out that Ice 9 was Q-Jacking. Not the case, I asked Ice 9 to keep the swirling snakes busy to wait on the six. Besides Ice 9’s aggressive attitude is infectious. It was an honor to lead today! Great take out by Snowflake. Aye!.

Mr. Brady and his bunch

Posted on behalf of Mr. Brady:

Nineteen of Area 51’s best showed up on a beautiful spring morning for a pleasant running workout.  It seems some doubted if the Q would show, but those doubters just don’t understand just-in-time delivery.

The Thang & Moleskine

We skipped the COP, did a short warm up of toe and heel steps followed by butt kickers, then moseyed down to Rosecliff for a brief dose of Mary (20 flutters, 20 heels-to-heaven).  I can’t really do a lot of Mary, so we stopped there and got back to running.  Haze mentioned he was upset we headed in this direction instead of taking a tour of the 70’s architectural Mecca of Raintree since my namesake did his best work in the 70’s.  Too bad he made his request on Twitter – and I don’t tweet.  Much like my namesake, I stay away from social media.

We moseyed on to Coburn Court for a little half pipe action.  Slim Fast Q’ed my first introduction to the half pipe.  Several people noted his absence.  Perhaps he will attend FT again soon.  Somebody let him know we miss him.  We did a triple pipe with exercises at the top of each side (high knees one side, Turkish getups on the other) and Sister Mary Margarets each time you came to the bottom.  I was planning on a day of nothing but merkins and burpees – also known as a “Headerfest” – but changed my mind when Frasier showed up one-armed.  Thank God for that.  I do burpees and merkins as well as I do Mary.  So we burned up our thighs in the half pipe instead.

Then it was on to Bevington Place for a quick-paced out and back.  Everyone ran at a hard clip in the direction of Rea Road until the first guy reached Rea and turned around.  Take a guess who got there first.  Then the whole Pax reversed back to the start when the first guy rolled back up to them.

From Bevington Place, the herd moseyed around to 51, did a few LBC’s, moseyed on to Davie Park (where I was overruled), moseyed back to the AO, and finally ended up on the track as dawn was breaking.  A fast lap sprinting the straight and recovering on the turns while the six came in. By then it was running late and the PAX made it clear the workout was over.

I fumbled the COT and goofed up recording the name game.  My sincerest apologies.  I humbly thank everyone for bearing with me on my first Q at Fast Twitch.

Swift induces #TBQ

13 PAX, some with changes of shorts, launched from the Ballantyne AO at 0515 for something new on the 3rd Tuesday of the Month.

The THANG:

  • Warm-up 1.1 mi on the way to the Bull Ring.  Run about .75mi then 3 drills (high knees, B-skip, butt kicks) and 2 strides.
  • Count off – 13PAX.  No one starts alone this workout.
  • On the Bull Ring, run 800m at 2mile Race Pace, recover 200m with jog, start next 800m in opposite direction with someone else.
  • Keep starting 800m intervals until 0605.  Goal for 6.

The Moleskin:

  • 800m intervals are not normal at Swift.  We usually run by time, so this workout sets up to give you a measurement to keep coming back to.  We’ll repeat something like it once per month at least until the BRR.  You can thank Freeloader, Nash, Reddogs, and even Haggis for demanding a “standard” workout.
  • Even if your Mickey Mouse watch only has a minute hand, you can keep a pretty good record of your speed for each 800m on the Bull Ring – it’s just one time around.  Goal to finish 6 or more is to keep the last interval at the same speed as the first.  As in the Preblast video, 2mi Race Pace is also known as VO2Max.  The more time you can spend running at VO2Max in this workout, the better, so going out too fast in the first few intervals and then not being able to sustain over the 2nd half won’t do you as much good as finding that level and sustaining.  And that level when right will hurt pretty bad.
  • Finding a group to run with is key.  Trading the lead each interval gives each PAX a chance to find a pace and stick with it.  It’s easy to always trail.  Harder to learn how to push.  If you can find someone close to your speed, trade off every interval.  Run on their shoulder (to get some extra distance) or fall in single file.  Keeps each man sharp. #ISI
  • Intervals over a distance are much harder than intervals over a time.  With an interval over a distance, you have an easy comparison and can’t cheat the clock.  This often induces Earth Shattering Bowel movements known as Total Bowel Quiver #TBQ and #SpilledMerlot.  While not many PAX wanted to go near Frehley’s rolled up loin cloth in his hand, Mr. Bean was reported to have a clean delivery hanging off the edge of a dumpster.  All is takes is waking up a few minutes earlier to get the system moving.  It’s happened to all of us, but some of us weren’t as lucky as finding a dark corner to squat in.
  • #SpilledMerlot or near spillage is also a side effect of running at VO2Max and delivering as much oxygen you can to your body.  If it’s not getting in fast enough, the body revolts to force you.
  • Teddy was often confused by all of the Garmin watch beeping of Honeybee, so he tried to run as fast as he could to get away from it.  #MissionAccomplished, but Honeybee didn’t go down so easy.
  • Dear Abby and Silk were leading a big group of PAX through some fast recoveries.  No problem trying to get at least 2 minutes on each recovery.  It’s not a 1000m continuous sprint.
  • M. Tussauds regrets not having Soft Pretzel and his fellow Union County PAX Longhaul to chase down, but gave Silk a run for his money.
  • Champagne got the text from Honeybee just prior to the workout on the matching outfits, but Champagne took the calf condoms as his personal touch to differentiate from HB.  Oh, and the huge arms.
  • Not sure that Wing Man’s Strava records will stand much longer. Keeps knocking out his 1mile PR efforts – https://www.strava.com/activities/307487116.  Now if he can figure out the Lap button…
  • Next IronSharpensIron “Standard” workout is on June 16th.  Now you know what to expect…

Red Pill (Outback)

Nessy (Lake) Circuits with six pain stations. We had a warm up round to ensure the PAX had clear understanding of the task and then counted off into four teams with each team starting out at a different pain station. Let the games begin

Pain Stations:

  1. Pull-ups x 5
  2. Burpees x 10
  3. Dips x 20
  4. Hand release merkins x 30
  5. LBC x 40
  6. Run one lap

Rinse and repeat until time was up.

Then back to the COT for some Mary

The red pill was a little hard to swallow this morning given no rest periods, high humidity and the fun had at pain station 4. Not much mumble chatter and could see PAX digging deep and pushing it. Great job all around!

Moleskin:

This was the first Bagpipe Workout Split and T-Claps to Outback for taking the second QIC. Special thanks to Van Pelt for sharing the Bear Hunt. That second partner carry after shooting the bear was brutal. (It sounded like a lot more fun than actually doing it.) Great showing of Haggis and Chipotle coming off of a 60-K this past weekend. Way to go Icky Shuffle on smoking the Q on the uphill sprints. It was a pleasure leading the PAX today. My apologies for leaving before COT due to a work scheduling error. Look forward to being back in the gloom with these fine men soon.

History

Of the 24 men who posted today, only three were there when we kicked it all off on May 15, 2012 (Me, Stone Cold, Joker).  It was only the third workout in A51 at the time (Area 51 at McKee was the first; Death Valley was 2nd, having been freshly evicted from the bowl in front of the Siskey Y that spring).

Stone Cold and I had only two objectives for Skunk Works:  1) It was to be a kick in the teeth each and every week, and 2) It would push the envelope, try new things (hence the name).  Harley has taken the objectives to heart, and the Skunk still delivers after all these years.

What would an anniversary workout be without a quick stroll down memory lane?  For the benefit of the newer pax, the Skunk Works timeline can be divided into three distinct Eras:

Yard Sale Skunk

May 15, 2012 to Oct. 31, 2012.  This was back when we’d bring anything laying around the yard and make it into an exercise.  Sand bags, sledge hammers, slosh pipes, plates, tires, chains, ropes, lead pipes, jumping boxes, heavy bags, cinder blocks,5 gallon buckets of sand, dumb bells, screw drivers and beach towels, and even a gallon of bleach.  Those were the days of elaborate set ups, stations, and hoping that more than 16 or so guys didn’t show up.  But they did, and then some.  As a result, Skunk evolved into the…

Iron Skunk

Nov. 6, 2012 to Jan. 6, 2015.  The very first Skunk KB workout looks fairly pedestrian now but it ushered in an age of tremendous conditioning gains. Not (yet) Mad Gains, however….Whereas Skunk 1.0 was inspired by Diamondhead, Skunk 2.0 took a page from Combine (we still lived in Metro’s basement at that point and many 51 Pax made regular journeys north of Fairview).  KBs and running or, some would say, running and some KBs.  Either way, KBs added a steel toe, as it were, to the Skunk’s weekly kick in the teeth.  Skunk In a Bag was so bad that I had repressed it (and the encore) from short term memory until Young Love ripped it off a few weeks back at Foxhole. Let’s agree to never do that again….Still, lots of great workouts in the Skunk 2.0 Era, from Farmer’s CMIYC around the loop road, to hairburners around the same.  Median suicides and turning the knob all the way to 11.  Stumbled upon this gem of a BB from a Bananas Q that got 27 comments–most of which were recommendations on Sanka’s name.  Prancer dodged some bullets that day.  It’s a wonder why the “lay down overhead pullover” or the “feet straight up locked arm crunches” didn’t sweep the region, you just never know what’s going to go viral.  Like doubling up on bells, for instance….

Heavy Skunk

Jan 13, 2015 to current.  The day we chucked caution (and our hamstrings) to the wind and embraced doubles.    We should have loaded up on Muscle Driver stock because the bell count in A51 has likely, er, doubled since Christmas.  And it shows.  Guys who were afraid of upgrading 30 pounders are regularly swinging doubles or the same or more.  #MadGainz are upon us.  But it need not be at the expense of running or pre-KB gear.  We’ll always have strong ectomorphs like Fletch trying to run into the ground, and the pax rejoiced greatly when Alf scooped up another set of plates for hairburners.  Heavy Skunk is just a combo of all its predecessors–the best, and worst, of each.

All that to say that each section of today’s workout was a nod toward each Skunk Era:

  • Non KB gear on the tire hairburners across the grass
  • Single KBs and Sprints, and
  • Heavy / Doubles

Hope everyone this morning enjoyed the short trip in the time machine. Looking forward to see what the fourth year has in store.

ANNOUNCEMENT

It’s “Dress Like Sussudio” day at Joust-Kevlar this Friday, as we pay homage to our favorite bald be-knickered Brit. Run by Gymboree for a pair of kid sweats and leggings and make sure to keep your vital organs warm with one of the 25 Adidas jackets in your closet, the ones that you got for mercilessly hectoring coaching the U10 lads.  Shaved head optional, but encouraged.
