Spending New Years Eve At Times Square

Posted on behalf of Iron Horse

7 men chose to join the fun at SPEARHEAD, ensuring they would not make the midnight ball drop this evening….so we took a stroll around the Carmel Middle School Times Square instead .

The Thang:

Stroll down to the football field for COP (Rucks off):

  • SSH x 15 IC
  • IW x 15 IC
  • Mt Climber x 15 IC
  • LBC x 15 IC

Rucks ON and New’s Years Hats distributed.
Line up at the 50 yard Times Square for broken 8 count burpees as follows:

  • 15 Low Slow Squats – then run 50 yds to next cone.
  • 15 Groiners – then run 50 yds to next cone.
  • 15 Plank Jacks – then run 50 yds to next cone.
  • 15 Merkins – then run 50 yds back to starting cone
  • 15 Jump Squats

Rinse and Repeat with 10 Reps.
Rinse and Repeat with 5 Reps.

As someone in the PAX correctly pointed out that we should limit our running under weight, we changed theme.

Partner Up – size doesn’t matter.
Hooters passed out (no, the ones that play music….no, the ones you put in your…..ok, forget it).

Around the Square:

  • P1: begins squats while P2 bear crawls to cone 25 yds out.
  • Once P2 arrives at cone he calls out SET, and begins squatting while P1 bear crawls to join him.
  • Continue this way around Square in 25 meter increments (200 meters total).

SPEARHEAD REST = Dolly’s in cadence while pressing ruck + 15 curls.

Back to start:

  • Same cycle as above with Merkins and Lunge Walks (in 25 meter increments for total of 200 meters).

SPEARHEAD REST = Flutters in cadence while pressing ruck + 15 overhead presses.

Back to start:

  • Same cycle as above with Backwards Bear crawls and Rolling Merkins
  • [audible called as both the Backward Bear crawls and the Rolling Merkins did not illicit the New Year’s spirit: stopped at 100 meters total]

SPEARHEAD REST = Louganis with Ruck + 15 Squatting O/H Presses.

Cool Down: 15 x CDD OYO.

MOLESKIN:

  • It was a pleasure to return to the SPEARHEAD playground after misplacing (?) my Ruck the past 8 weeks.
  • YHC tried to add a flavor of the GRC Welcome Party (= tedious and unpleasant) to the morning’s fun.
  • Good work by everyone – nice way to close out the year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • New Year’s Day convergence at #F3DeathValley, S Charlotte Middle School: 0700
  • Saturday convergence in Fort Mill for the Joe Davis 5K…0700 for F3 workout, 0800 2ndF, 0900 5K. Sign-up is still open.

  • I had a great time leading you guys today.  This is actually my first Q on a Friday since the SPEARHEAD hard launch on 8/9/13 when I 50/50’d with Dora.  SPEARHEAD has come a long way since then, and we owe it to each of you guys who come out every week to put in your downpainment.
  • Pushing that “Sleigh” up hill was difficult.  I am totally smoked from that.  We definitely need to bring this back in future routines.
  • Hoff was concerned before my Q that I wouldn’t be able to hang with everyone since I haven’t been posting as much recently due to my house renovation.  I think he expected an easy workout without exercises in cadence.  Unfortunately for Hoff, he was wrong!  I heard the comment “Who would have thought Bob the Builder had strong abs”.  Thanks – I guess? haha
  • On another note – I’ve been smoking pork and chicken all day and it looks delicious.  Looking forward to the party tonight!

SPEARHEAD Mini-Ruck – “Can We Have That Basketball goal?”

Eleven rucktards and one shadow posted around the shovel flag this morning for a solid dose of pain with a side of fellowship.

The Thang:
We completed the Army Personal Fitness Test, exactly the same way that we did it on 8/9.

  • 2 Minutes – As many reps as possible Push Ups
  • 2 Minutes – As many reps as possible Sit Ups
  • Timed 2 mile run

Load up coupons:

  • Shovel Flag
  • Boom Box + Various Cassette Tapes (Flag man carries)
  • 40lb Sandbag
  • Small log (1 man)
  • Big log (2 men)
  • Tractor Tire (3 men)
  • 8′ Piece of 2×4 lumber

Ruck towards McAlpine Park – Beastie Boys on the boom box.

When we got to the park, we realized that we were in the middle of a high school/college cross country event.  We were quite a distraction for the athletes and spectators as we passed through the park.  We turned a lot of heads.

We had started out carrying the tire using the 2×4 through the center, and resting the board on the shoulders of two men.  After the park, we changed the plan and switched to a three man tire team rotation – one inside the tire towards the back and two in front with the tire on one shoulder.  The man inside the center of the tire had it resting on his ruck, making this the rest point of the three man rotation.

We hit mile marker 4 on the greenway, and then turned around to go back.  The PAX didn’t realize that this ruck today was not a loop, so the thought of backtracking four miles was a mind game for some.

Boom box cassette reload – Metallica.

Around mile 5, we came across a group of volunteers cleaning up the greenway.  They had a ton of trash bags and other bulky items that they had collected, great work by those guys!  We saw a couple school age guys carrying a basketball goal to the trash, and we knew that it was a match made in heaven.

Add one basketball goal to coupon load at mile 5.

As we passed back through the park and the cross country event, we were feeling the pain.  The last stretch from the park to the parking lot was definitely the toughest part.

Arrived back at the parking lot 11:40.

Total distance:  10 miles = 2 miles running, 8 miles rucking.

2ndF at Buffalo Wild Wings immediately following.

Moleskin:

  • Today was awesome.  This was a great time with good friends, and a great workout.  I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday morning.
  • If you want to know your APFT score – plug your stats in to http://apftscore.com/
  • The boom box is a new SPEARHEAD staple.  We are starting our own cassette collection, and the boom box will be on the sidelines at every possible SPEARHEAD workout.  That music kept us going strong!
  • We had some SPEARHEAD FNGs out today, somebody must have put a serious EH on those guys for them to pick this as their first workout.  Strong work!
  • Those poor kids with the basketball goal didn’t know what to think when we asked them for it.  It was a spur of the moment decision that I don’t regret, although some of the other PAX didn’t quite see it that way.  There was some groaning, but we got it home!
  • SoCal donated a tire for us to use today, and it was brutal.  That thing was perfect for this, and I hope to use it again soon.
  • We had a shadow for this event, which was AWESOME!  I didn’t think to ask anyone to shadow, but I’m so glad that we had someone come to do it.  We will post a photo album on www.SPEARHEADf3.com soon.
  • 2ndF at Buffalo Wild Wings was great.  Nothing better than a little ACRT, 2ndF, and College Football to end a tough workout.
  • Congratulations to Big League Chew, Schedule C, and Liquor Cycle for earning their SPEARHEAD patches today.  Strong work guys!
  • Thanks so much for coming out today, everyone.  Can’t wait for the next one.

Moleskin:

  • Wow, you guys absolutely killed it today.  This workout was seriously hard, and you couldn’t have done a better job getting through it.  I was proud to lead you guys, and I hope you got what you came for this morning.
  • I couldn’t have been prouder than I was when I gave Angler his SPEARHEAD patch today.  That man is a beast, and I hope I can still get out and do this kind of work when I am 70 #doubtful.
  • Iron Horse got his SPEARHEAD patch today as well.  One of the originals to the SPEARHEAD extra credit workouts – his first three posts didn’t count towards his patch (challenge started after one week).  This man is a SPEARHEAD loyalist, and I am proud to see him earn the patch.
  • Big League Chew was getting some evil looks when the PAX found out that “Daisy” the log was his creation.  The front and back anchor pieces are huge, BLC.  That’s a tough carry!   The only person that looked big enough to carry those anchor pieces was Crab Cakes – that man is a giant!
  • Still eligible to complete the patch challenge – Schedule C, Liquor Cycle, Big League Chew, and Sweetness.  Finish strong, men!  I’ll see you on Saturday.
