Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.

12 of South Charlotte’s finest and Semi-Gloss mustered in a rainy parking lot halfway between HT and Dunkin this morning. What a treat to walk outside to 45 and rainy. Wardrobe selection was a little tricky – gloves? sleeves? layers? ball cap? Semi went full tights. I adjusted my weinke to account for the soaked ground, and off we went. It’s cute how we dodge puddles at the beginning of a rainy workout.

Hopper – Right before the workout started, he said he was going to buy me a donut after and then ran to his car as soon as I said, “Amen” in COT. I still got a donut. Boston Kreme.
Semi-Gloss – Looked like Big Bird out there with the matching yellow shirt and toboggan.
Sweater Set – Veteran move by me to outsource Mary – everybody gets a turn to lead an exercise. Sweater Set was ready with “ROSALITA!” when I called on him, but then had to ask exactly what Rosalita was. There are no dumb questions.
Marge – Living up to the “fastest-guys-get-girls’-names” rule. He was out front with Slingshot on the road hump suicides.
Puddin’ Pop – Hates the road hump suicides that I like to pull out at Hydra and now Hawks Nest. I think he and Clover just sat down and had coffee while the rest of us ran back and forth.
Clover – Used his turn during Mary to filibuster, trying to run out the clock with a 1-minute plank.
Deep Dish – The hair is really something. He wants so bad to be like Trevor Lawrence.
Snowflake – Declined to run in from his house this morning due to bad weather, sandbagged a little on the suicides, then threw down the hammer for the AYG back to HT.
Motorboat – Really strong sock game. He looked like Larry Bird out there – thankfully his shorts were longer.
Slingshot – Made the commute over from Hydra and dominated with Marge. Why don’t the rest of Sprocket’s band of merry men make the extra half-mile trip down to Hawks Nest?
Geraldo – Tried to go crazy during Mary when it was his turn to call an exercise. I issued a verbal warning when he blew past 15 then just took away the keys when he kept going at 20.
Jet Fuel – Was giving reeeealy weak effort on the backwards runs up that hill. We had to do an extra rep to let him redeem himself. Nick would not like that effort.

Raining on My Parade

6 Pax braved the elements and showed up for a wet workout that included rolling around in puddles. Today was a big day for me, as I was handed over the Flag to be the Co-site Q of watchtower. I do see it as an honor to be asked to do this. I will do my best to make sure I properly handle this responsibility. I am very appreciative of the guys who did make it out and remind those that decided to stay in of what Maddog posted earlier this morning – “Start making small decisions to take the easy way out and soon it will become a habit.” Thank you for those wise words Maddog.

THE WARMUP:

We moseyed across the front of the school to the overhang at the back door by the bus lot. We were not quiet able to circle up but we gathered and did a warmup of:

-15 side straddle hops

-15 imperial walkers

-Jimmy Dougan’s center left and right.

-Calf stretches

-runner stretches

-Walk out Merkins (from standing position bend over walk hands out to plank do 1 merkin and walk hands back to feet and stand up)

THE THANG:

From here we moseyed behind the school to the rock garden behind the basketball court. We did 20 step ups there ran behind the school to the bus lot did 20 merkins there and then ran to the overhand where the benches were and did 20 dips there. We ran back to the rock garden and repeated 3 more times, decreasing count by 5 each time. (20, 15, 10 and then 5)

Then we moseyed to the front of the school  at each light there was a cone set up with an exercise on it. You ran to the 1st cone did the exercise and then ran back to the corner. You kept repeating until we got all the way to the other side. I think 8 different exercises.

Up until this point the rain was pretty light. I planned on going over to the overhang at the front of the school but even that area seemed wet, so I made the decision to just bite the bullet and lay down in the parking lot.

We each took a line in the parking lot and did 11’s with LBC’s and Merkins. In between the 2, we did a sideways alligator walk across the parking space. We started with 10 merkins and 1 LBC made it down to 6 Merkins and 5 LBC.s and decided to take a lap to give our arms a rest. At this point it is pouring on us. As we did the lap we noticed some school staff arriving  so we made our way to the COT and finished up our set of 11’s With 1 minute to kill we did 1 more lap around the parking lot and called it time.

Announcements: Rushed through these since it was now pouring rain. reminded everyone of the Blood drive Saturday and CSUP coming up.

Easy Button handed the flag over to me and we took a quick family photo and got back in our cars.

FastTwitch through the rain drops

5 PAX showed at 0515 at the Arbo ABC store despite the RADAR and Forecast for heavy rain during the workout this morning.  We took to the streets and hills of Raintree to see if we could build some running strength.

The THANG

  • 1mi Easy down to Rounding Run & Rounding Run.
  • Dynamic warm-up exercises using the street lights as a guide to head back towards Rising Meadow – High Knees, Butt kicks, A-Skip, B-Skip, and strides.
  • Start rounds of :30, :30, :60 – run 30sec Hard (9/10 effort level), recover back to start. run 30sec Hard (9/10 effort level), recover back to start. run 60sec Hard (9/10 effort level), recover back to start.
  • Round 1: “Regular” meaning running up the hill, recover down.
  • Round 2: “Bounding” for first 2 intervals, Sister Mary Catherine’s IC x 10 then “Regular” for the 3rd.
  • Round 3: mosey back up Rounding Run to the top of the hill near the golf crossing.  “Downhill” start for all 3 intervals with PAX adding the uphill portion of Rounding Run towards Raintree Ln for the 3rd interval. Regroup at Raintree Ln.
  • Round 4: mosey across Raintree Ln to the bottom of Windbluff. 60sec Squat hold then 1st interval “Regular”. 2nd interval “Backwards Run”. 3rd interval “Backwards Run” halfway then finish “regular”.
  • Round 5: Squats IC x10 then 1st interval “regular”, Side Lunge ICx10 then 2nd interval “regular”, 3rd interval “regular” up opposite direction of Windbluff
  • Round 6: Squat Hold 60sec then 1st interval “regular”, 2nd interval “regular”, 3rd interval start backwards run then switch to regular about halfway.  Regroup at top near Raintree Ln.
  • Mosey back to COT

Moleskin

  • Writing Backblasts for running workouts isn’t a thing anymore, so I don’t do them.  That’s why they’re still required for Fast Twitch…
  • It was great to return to this part of Rain Tree.  It’s been a while for YHC since either a Fast Twitch or Mountain Goat workout from SCMS.  The hills are steep and well protected from traffic.  While 30sec covers most of them, a 60sec interval will get you past the top of the steep parts – hence the need to introduce some other exercises to induce maximum muscle fatigue for longer intervals.
  • The 60sec squat holds (the “Al Gore”, right?) were putting YHC at the limit. Such a simple exercise, but difficult if done with the femur parallel to the ground.  Making it hard to run on fatigued legs.
  • Benny’s HC on Slack Preblast made sure there would be at least One PAX attending.  YHC had no excuses not to Q, so that made 2.  Seeing Purple Haze and Airwolf pull in to the lot made it solid, and having Retread squeeze in there meant for a lively chatter.  Hearing rain on your window at 4am kept many a PAX in the fart sack today.  But YHC has never been to a F3 running workout solo.  Prepare your body with the right clothes, prepare your mind by not giving yourself an excuse, and you’ll be glad you did the workout whether it’s raining, cold, or cold & raining.  In the end, the heavy rain held off, and the shoes stayed pretty dry if you avoided the big puddles.
  • Intervals run at this effort (9 out of 10) need adequate recovery – either focus on the same distance as recovery or at a minimum make it more time than the interval.  Our recovery was often almost double the time (i.e. after the 30sec interval, the recovery was 40-60sec.).
  • Intervals run at this effort are hard to do with bad form.  Doing them on hills require more focus to not overstride going up or down the hill, so aim to keep a normal high cadence of 170 to 180 steps per minute, upright posture leaning forward from the hips, and proper arm movement.  If you can run fast and in control, you can learn to run more efficiently at slower speeds that are still race efforts.

Sonic Surprises and Senior Day at Swole

We are approximately one month into the new strength and conditioning program at Swole, Meathead, and Olympus and today the featured exercise was the kettlebell swing.  Six PAX began their week on the good foot and gathered in the drizzly, murky parking lot of a nondescript office building in suburbia.  With the Q still in a celebratory mood following the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 18th national championship a fair to middling disclaimer was given and we got down to business.

Warmup: 18 SSH, 18 Imperial Walker, 18 Mountain Climbers then onto the heavy swing portion of the workout

Senior Day Celebration:

Ten rounds of six heavy swings every minute on the minute

Next up was a 15 minute AMRAP complex designed to build muscle and highlight the careers of Devonta Smith (#6, Your Heisman Trophy winner and AP Player of the Year), Mac Jones (#10, America’s Quarterback and your Unitas Award winner), and Najee Harris (#22, Your Doak Walker Award winner).

6 Squats and 6 Deadlifts, 10 presses each arm and 10 rows each arm, 22 LBC and 22 Freddie Mercury.  #RTR  #MTAQ

After that the PAX were undoubtedly feeling like Ohio State’s defense trying and failing to keep up with the most prolific offense in the long and storied history of collegiate tackle football.  It’s probably tough to get into playoff shape playing only half of a season however, and battles with such titans as Indiana and Northwestern probably leave little in the proverbial tank.  #SarcasmFont

At this point Sasquatch decided that discretion was the better part of valor and disappeared into the darkness, much like Notre Dame in a New Year’s Day bowl game.  Legend has it that on a quiet night you can still hear the Alabama running backs stampeding untouched through the Irish defense.  We then did three rounds of a strength building complex consisting of 6 one armed chest presses on each side, 10 skull crushers, and 22 flutters.  Fatigue was setting in, but it was time for heavy carries so we pressed on, as champions do.

Finish with three rounds of waiter/rack/suitcase carries, then three minutes of heavy swings, and the hardest part of the week is over.

On the musical front, YHC decided to throw the PAX a curveball.  Instead of the standard fare of hair metal of classic rock, the playlist was straight outta the mean streets of West Chester, Ohio.  If you grew up with the channel called Video Jukebox you were reunited with some old hip hop friends, and if weren’t so lucky, you probably were left with some mixed thoughts about those people who represent the 513.  Either the hip hop genre peaked circa 1993, or YHC has no use for anything in the category after then (except for Nelly of course).  Playlist included Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend”, Sir Mix A Lot’s “My Hooptie”, Rob Base and EZ Rock’s “It Takes Two”, Young and Restless’ “B Girls”, Paperboy’s “Ditty”, Positive K’s “I Gotta Man”, Candyman’s “Knockin’ Boots”, Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky”, Young MC’s “Bust a Move”, and Skee-Low’s “I Wish”.  Voodoo really enjoyed “My Hooptie” for the record.  Unfortunately we didn’t get to Naughty by Nature or Nate Dogg and Warren G, lest things get too turnt as the kids say.  Regarding the Video Jukebox channel, this was a service where you would call a 900 number, pay a small fee, enter in the code for a song and then watch the corresponding music video play.  The smoother middle school boys would talk to a girl in between classes and make sure that the object of their affection would be watching that afternoon and then dial up a romantic slow jam such as Surface’s “The First Time” or Stevie B’s “Because I Love You”.  The Video Jukebox channel was the ultimate wingman.  There was also nothing better for getting hype in 1990 (as the kids say) as when you’d be watching The ‘Box and a call would come in and you’d see the digits 671 appear at the bottom of the screen because that meant momentarily you would be going to the extreme to rock a mic like a vandal and rollin’ in a 5 point 0 with your ragtop down so your hair could blow.  Simpler times.  Word to your mutha.

Kiss the Pole

YHC has made 6 trips to St. Louis since the beginning of December in a vain attempt to closeout the Project From Hell aka Satan’s Spawn aka Shoot Me Now.  As a result, YHC’s fitness level has steadily declined into Code Red territory meaning an intervention was needed.  Nothing like a Rock Zero Q to get back in the sweaty saddle.  After a deficient disclaimer, 18 PAX launched towards greatness at 0700 sharp, notwithstanding Deep Dish and Bounce’s notable absence.

Mosey to the artificial turf courtyard for COP – IW, Shoulder Tap Merkins, LS Jump Squats, MC, Runner’s Lunge Stretch

At some point, DD and Bounce graced the PAX with their presence, immediately hurtling insults towards YHC in a pathetic effort to thwart Q greatness.  Epic fail.  Let’s mosey to our destiny at the top of the Five Knolls, shall we?

3’s, 3’s, and more 3’s…. sort of like Steph Curry.

  • Top of the Five Knolls — Merkins, Squats, Diamond Merkins — 10 ea.
  • Bottom of the Five Knolls — LBCs, H2H, Peter Parker — 10 ea.
  • Rinse and Repeat 3x

The PAX visited each cul-de-sac before departing the beloved Knolls, stopping for Merkins, Lunges, and Rosalitas.

Mosey to the big arse rock pile in front of the church.  Grab a lifting rock large enough to deflect juvenile criticism.

  • Arm stuff
  • Hot lap
  • Leg stuff
  • Hot lap
  • Core stuff
  • Hot lap

Horsehead muttered “it’s as if he planned an all body workout.”  Better to be lucky than good, YHC always says.

Mosey to the frozen tundra and partner up for Grinders w/a Twist.  YHC explained that his 9th grade baseball coach would randomly yell “Kiss the Pole!!!!” during practice, at which time you had to drop what you were doing and sprint like your hair was on fire to a faraway power pole on the back 40 of McClintock Junior High’s property.  God help you if you were last, as YHC often was, because ridicule and calisthenics awaited your return.  Harkening back to those wonderful memories, YHC called “Kiss the Pole” 2x during Grinders.  Because we never truly graduate or mature, YHC realized this exclamation lent itself to immediate and ruthless ridicule from this particular PAX.  Use your imagination as to what was said even in the presence of a minor.  Next time, YHC will call “Slap the Fence” or whatever, anything other than “Kiss the Pole.”  Lesson learned.

Mosey to Launch, stopping for 5 Merkins at each speed hump.

Not much to add to the abovementioned summary, other than to say it was an honor (sort of) to lead this group.  Thanks to Geraldo for the opportunity.  There was an absolute hilarious and disparaging comment made about SOB during COT, but decorum prevents its repetition here (thanks, Bounce).  It’s all about unity, you know?  Everyone got after this workout.  You either bring your A game to the Five Knolls, or you go home crying for mommy.  Mucho respect to Mr. Magoo, Hopper, O’Tannenbaum, and Snowflake.  Well done, men.

Time to book YHC’s next trip to STL….

Blakovery: A PreBlast

Congratulations.  You just clicked on a Blakovery PreBlast, which means you either

  1. like unnecessary things, or
  2. have a ton of free time on your hands.

Either way, you came to the right place, because not only is this Preblast unnecessary, but it is excessively long.  So like I said, congratulations.  Before I get to the plan for tomorrow’s Blakovery, we need to talk about what happened the last time I Q’d Blakovery…

It was a long time ago.  Exactly two weeks ago to be exact.  There was a different president back then.  Blakovery regulars like Wingman and Prohibition were going about their daily lives, anxiously and secretly awaiting a Slack run channel notification signaling the Blakovery wienke for the following morning.  Chopper, ever the steadfast site Q, took to Slack to announce me as the Q and passive-aggressively ponder the quality of my future course.

“Come out to see if he brings true creativity to the streets of Blakeney or settles for a cheap knock-off of and old familiar course :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

With the route already planned, I quickly and confidently replied:

“@Chopper of course there will be a new route tomorrow.  Bring a headlamp for ‘Longview Lite’.”

This was a shortened version of a course I first brought to Chicken Run through the gated Longview neighborhood.  I was pretty proud of myself.  After all, the original Longview course was pretty well-received, and I was excited to bring a version of it to the Blakovery PAX.  But then, with one short reply from Chopper, it all came crashing down.

“@tuck  looks familiar but maybe just a new name :flushed:

Chopper’s words, aided by co-conspirators “thinking_face” and “flushed”, cut through me like a knife.  With thinking_face seemily saying “Tuck, a recycled Chicken Run course may have been good enough under the previous regimes of PJ, Bunker & Brat, but there’s a new sheriff in town”, and flushed piling on by staring directly through MY VERY SOUL.  In an instant my world was turned upside-down.  What is a good route?  Who am I?  Will Paper Jam wear knee-high socks?  I could no longer answer these questions.  But I knew that sooner or later Chopper would come calling, and that when he did, I HAD to be ready.

And so, I took to the streets.  For 14 lonely nights I wandered the streets, alone.  Searching.  For what, I did not know.  The only thing i DID know was that Chopper was asking for, no, DEMANDING excellence.  But how could I, a mere mortal, live up to his impossibly high standards?  How could I redeem myself?  I had a feeling the answer was somewhere out there, waiting for me.  Night after night I scoured the neighborhoods of South Charlotte and Waxhaw in relentless pursuit of whatever it was that would gain me Chopper’s respect.  I didn’t eat.  I didn’t sleep.  I forgot what my kids looked like.  But then, just when I thought all was lost, it started to come together.  A truly new Blakovery course.  I finally found it, but more importantly, I found myself along the way.  Chopper, you knew what you were doing all along, didn’t you, you sly son-of-a-b*tch.  Unbelievable.

Fast forward to now.  This is where the Blakovery PreBlast actually begins.  Join us tomorrow @ the fountains of Blakeney @ 0515 for a new 5 mile course.  It is roughly 4.25 mi road and 0.75 mi flat non-technical dirt trail.  On the trail sections there are a couple of slightly muddy spots, but nothing crazy.  For the most part you can run around it.  IMHO road shoes would be fine.  If you are worried about your shiny new shoes get over it or wear something older.  A headlamp is required for this route.  I repeat, a headlamp is required.

F3 Waxhaw Board Meeting 1/23/21

8 men gathered at Five Stones to get a workout in and then meet around a raging smoky fire.  The goal was to drink coffee, eat donuts, and not freeze discuss F3 Waxhaw’s successes and how we can add more fuel to the fire to ensure we are reaching more Sad Clowns and to encourage the PAX to accelerate our Male Community Leadership.  2 main reasons for the backblast:

  1. Get Zin and Gerber to stop harassing me so they can get credit for their workout today
  2. Share with the PAX what the Board discussed and the actions/takeaways from the meeting

WORKOUT:

  • Kettlebell exercises, Some burpees, and a little bit of running

MEETING:

  • WHO:
    • 1st F Qs (Fitness):  Dasher and Chastain
    • 2nd F Qs (Fellowship):  Gerber and Zinfandel
    • 3rd F Qs (Faith):  Shop Dawg and Centerfold
    • Weasel Shaker:  Mad Dog
    • Nant’an:  Bottlecap
  • TOPICS:
    • 2020 RECAP:  What stood out for F3 Waxhaw?
      • Resiliency:  While COVID initially impacted our routines and threatened to splinter our group, it actually proved to do the exact opposite in the long run.  We are bigger and better because we had to adjust on the fly (ex. Neighborhood workouts, Parking Lot Happy Hours, MASH)
      • Growth:  F3 Waxhaw experienced tremendous growth in a number of different ways:  # of PAX, # of Leaders, # of Site Qs, increased 3rd F participation, Partnerships with local ministries.
      • 100 PAX Challenge:  During a period of economic impact to many, our PAX showed their generosity by donating over $10,000 for 3 partner charities to make an impact in our community.
    • 2021 GOALS:  What should F3 Waxhaw focus on?
      • 2nd F and 3rd F structure:
        • Set up these events similar to 1st F with separate Site Qs
        • Encouraging Backblasts to bring awareness to PAX about what happened and who participated.
      • Diversity:  Of PAX and of our Workouts.
        • Encourage more participation and leadership from  PAX of all different backgrounds/experiences (race, nationalities, accents, ages, sizes, hairstyles, etc.)
        • Continue to support PAX who want to try a new workout idea (ie Rucking, Different Start time, Gear, New location, etc.). #FreedToLead
        • Evaluate option to expand 6th Man stories by adding video to be able to share via Social Media
      • Outreach to former PAX:
        • Identify the PAX who have fallen away
        • Be intentional about reaching out to PAX
        • Encourage a leader of this endeavor to keep us focused and generate new ideas to reach these men (events, lunches, etc.)
    • 1st F UPDATE:
      • Site Qs:
        • Review current Site Qs who could/should roll off; let’s keep it fresh and rotate off or onto a different site
        • Identify potential Site Qs who should be asked to step into new role
      • AO analysis (Area of Operation):
        • Map created that lays out all workouts
          • Where are we missing an AO?
        • Diversity of workout types (ie Bootcamp, Running, Gear, Rucking, Trail Running, MASH)
          • What type should be added?
        • What day and times are we missing?
      • Laying out the 2021 calendar
        • CSAUPs and Convergences
        • Q and Site Q Schools
