Walls, Walls and More Walls

Walls, Walls and More Walls

Great Wall

10 brothers met at 0515 at the Vine Restaurant at the Ballantyne AO to embark on a journey to acheve mud running greatness. Here’s what we did:

The Thang:

Run down Ballantyne Commons, east with some bench jumps and lunge walks thrown in.

Turn left on Ballantyne Commons Pl then some serpentine hill runs

Run up to the 2nd level of the Premier parking deck and circle up for COP: SSH X 15, IW X 15, 5 Burpees OYO. Run up and around to the 3rd level 5 Burpees OYO, Run up to the 4th level 5 Burpees OYO, run up to the 5th level.

Line up for sprints across the deck with 2 – 5 foot wall jumps and run back to the starting point X 3.

Move down to level 4.5 and split into 2 group. We then took turns boosting each other up a 9 foot wall X 2.

We ran down the staris, back out onto Ballantyne Commons Pl and run down cross the bridge and turn right behind one of the BofA buildings.

Plank and 20 merkins in cadence while we wait.

Run down behind the BofA buildings – across top of the hill then slalom around the trees across the back.

We arrived at the Kid’s pond lake to the dock 5 Burpees OYO, 1 lap around the lake, 15 merkins and 15 LBCs in cadence.
Run over to the field behind Kid’s Pond and to the following in the grass: Bear crawls, crabwalks and inch worms.

Head down the trail thru the woods and Bear crawl up and over the bridge.

Run up hill to short stone walls – up and over x 3

Run around lake over to next lake behind the Hixon building. Run around lake 2 times at your own pace and the winner (Mermaid aka the South Charlotte busted paw champion) calls exercises in cadence until everyone completes their 2 laps.

Head towards the exercise trail, but climbing over the 5.5 footwall on the way. Head to the COT.

Moleskin:

10 PAX proved they were Brave enough to handle Madame’s challenge this morning. My goal today was to climb walls. We climbed walls that were 4, 5, 5.5 and 9 feet tall and covered 4.7 miles in the hour.

Always a pleasure leading the men in the gloom.

Great work this morning men!

Don’t Sell Your Sole

Nineteen independently-minded Pax assembled of their own free will, clear of conscience and pure of heart–discounting for a moment original sin / total depravity.  Which reminds me, sounds like Joust had some good numbers today.

There were four for a KB appetizer consisting of 2 Brits and 2 Hairy American Winning Machines.  Cottontail didn’t stoop to Haggis’s level by bringing a trailer hitch to KB but he came close with his 1940s Iggy Mandlebaum dumbbell (GO TIME).  But credit where credit is due: What he lacked in grace he made up for with awkwardness.

In contrast to the throwback manliness of Cottontail’s dumbbell, was Sussudio’s,  ahem, “dog,” Kiara. He was unsure of the breed (which is what I would say, too, if I had a dog like that) but it appeared to be a mix of Maltese, guinea pig and a loofah. Kiara is apparently named after the 5th generation lioness in the lineage of the Lion King and Simba, having not seen his daughter in some time offered thanks while inspecting his glands.  Kiara was quite pleased with the whole production.

Simba

After Sussudio put the “dog” back in the glove box, the show went on.

MOLESKIN(E?)

  • Like most Thursday nights after the kids are asleep, I settled down with my Ham radio and police scanner to catch up on international and local events. Soon after getting my channels squelched, I got a text from one of my informants who has infiltrated a Group Texting gang, The Sons of Emoji.  At risk of life, limb and not being invited to pick up soccer at Elon Park, our courageous mole forwards me this group text message, from the gang leader himself:  “Dear Valued Pax:  Your friendship/acquaintance/existence is very important to us and we need your warm body to artificially inflate numbers tomorrow at Joust.  Turns out that Meathead Stone Cold let the place go to heck but now that we have a soccer player running the place, we need your support.  If you can fog a mirror, post.
  • With loins girded, I took to Twitter to stem such blatant astro-turfing.  The resulting twitter slap-fight ended with me confidently (it turns out over-confidently) stating that I would donate one pair of shoes to #SoleRedemption for every pax more that posted at Joust (8 week rolling avg = 7.71 over Kevlar (8 week rolling avg = 20.86).  Knowing I was playing with house money, I upped the ante to not just this Friday but the next three after it.  I came this close to spotting them 5 pax, too….
  • The results after Week 1 puts 10 pairs of shoes on the Big Board for the CRM men.
  • There was also considerable Twitter noise Thursday about the whose hill / mountain was bigger, Joust’s or Centurian’s [sic].  The suggestion of a Home and Away between the two AOs was met with crickets.  Bwaak, bwaak.
  • Fine work by the Kevlar men, a shining example of integrity and uprightness. Don’t be swayed by the culture whispering in your ear.  Do the right thing.  And if you don’t–well, more shoes on the Big Board.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Sussudio is Kevlar ShoeQ for #SoleRedemption: http://f3nation.com/2014/10/16/project-soleredemption-to-benefit-charlotte-rescue-mission/
  • Olympus is celebrating it’s one year anniversary tomorrow.  Get out there and support them, lest the Sons of Emoji come knocking.
  • Mile Time Trial at Community House Middle School this Tuesday.  Look for more info on all the appropriate Comz channels.  Looking to borrow a pair of Nike Frees, size 12.  DM me.

Finally a Good Suggestion (at least the first one YHC has followed)

The shovel flag was firmly planted and 22 of S Charlotte’s finest got up early for a downpainment on the weekend.

The Thang:

Warm-up – SSHX20, Squats X10, Freddie Mercury X20

The Murph – Run 1 mile, 100 pull ups, 200 merkins, 300 squats, run 1 mile back

That is all – simple but effective

Naked Moleskin

Our fearless site leader, still nursing a sore ankle, handed over the reins at like 9pm last night.  As I had just Q’d Hydra and still had bricks in my trunk I figured why not just double down and use again.  Unlike the evil thoughts that normally eminate from Purple Haze, he quickly suggested I leave the bricks in the trunk.   Knowing PH is wise beyond his years, I obliged (for once – may not happen again so savor the moment).

TR laid down a challenge for the men of Centurion on Twitter so we will see where it leads.  Interesting how it got laid down the day before a new workout (the “Brave”) depleted several of our stars.  No matter, we will reload (#starfish) and be stronger than ever.

The Murph limits mumble chatter but maximizes effort if youi want to finish in 45 minutes.  The PAX pushed hard but I noticed we need to figure out how to get pull ups into our routine more often – alot of Australian rules pull ups this am (YHC quilty as charged – kryptonite)

Announcements:

Escargot is site Q for the shoe drive.  Please bring 1 (or more) pair of used men’s athletic shoes for donation to use at the Charlotte Rescue Mission.

Hops took us out with a great prayer.  Thanks for including our brother BIll.  He is doing great and I am confident our prayers are a big part of this.

5s and The Blue Door

Blue doorThe Thang:

30 Merkins OYO
Grab a KB and lets mosey, stop and 30 Merkins OYO, mosey, 30 Merkins OYO, mosey to track, 30 Merkins OYO and put Kbs in the corner, 30 Merkins OYO

Head to the bleachers, split into two groups and get to the bottom steps of the outside bleachers. 1st person starts bear crawling up steps, at every 5th step you stop and do 5 incline Merkins…get to the top go to next set of stairs and do the same going down and every 5th step is 5 decline Merkins…when finished move to the next set of stairs and go up with every 5th step doing 5 Merkins and meeting at the top. When waiting for the stairs to open up you are doing jump squats touching your heels on the way down for good ROM.

Move to the end of bleachers and notice the 4 brick columns plus 1 Blue Door (5s). Weave up and down Mini-Gma to touch each column and back down to the bottom after the fourth so you get the full ROM of the Blue Door…halfway up to the Blue Door, your quads should feel like they are about to explode or fail.

Mosey back to gym equipment and half of pax does 20 pull ups while the other half does 40 Dry Docks…flap jack.

Head down to the track, sprint to the KBs in the far corner.

>45lb Kbs do 50 swings, <45lbs do 100 swings…when done do Merkins until rest of pax is done.

80+% around the track back to the bleachers.

Up the stairs to repeat the 5s to the Blue Door. Back to the gym equipment and Merkins until all the pax arrive.

Back down to the track…get in lines to bear crawl 5 steps and then 5 Merkins, repeat for about 40 yards.

Sprint to Kbs to do 40 two handed push presses.

Sprint back to bleachers for severe decline Merkins/handstand pushups with feet on top of the railing…as many as you can for 1 minute.

Sprint back to Kbs and mosey with Kbs, stop 30 Merkins OYO, mosey, 30 Merkins OYO, mosey 30 Merkins OYO back to start.

30 Merkins (requested by Mall Cop)
50 crunch squeezers OYO
30 Merkins
Extended Protractor
30 Merkins
As many Diamond Merkins as you can in the last minute.

Moleskin:

Beautiful chilled morning, 29 Pax came out in force to honor Stone Cold's past leadership as the Joust site Q, and welcome in the new site Q…the infamous Header! Thanks for stepping up to lead Header! The pax crushed it this morning, and there were a few asking where the SSH and IWs were after the 3rd set of 30 Merkins. The mumble chatter was left to mere groans for the majority of the workout, but some (Brown) still were able to throw in their hilarious as always quips throughout the workout…mainly questioning/making fun of why more pain was added. I am definitely not one to want anyone to leave a workout feeling like they wasted their time, or it was too easy. Hopefully that was accomplished today…

The 5s to the Blue Door was almost added in a 3rd time, but I wanted to make sure we got back to the start on time. Next time we will take it to 5 repeats of 5s to the Blue Door and ditch a few of the other that was mixed in…if that doesn't improve your hill running ability on pavement, nothing will.

I noticed how much the Merkins were wearing on the pax when we were at our 2nd stop on the mosey back and stop for 30 Merkins, when people finished their 30 got up and were sprinting with their Kbs back to the parking lot so another stop for 30 would be averted. Thanks to Mall Cop for requesting more Merkins once we got back…requesting may not have been really what he was doing, but I wanted to make sure he and the pax got their monies worth, so a few more were included.

Thanks to everyone that came out, it is a great site, and hopefully we can keep supporting it!

Kevlar Pre-Blast

Judging by Busch’s Wednesday pre-tweet, his Joust Q will be a spine-tingling tour de force of histrionic proportions. Maybe even better than that Olympus workout where Alf replicated a Japanese game show.  Super Short Fuzzy Balls or something.  Can’t compete with that.

All I can offer:  You know that sense of accomplishment you feel after working a piece of steak out of your teeth with your tongue?  Kevlar will be like that.

Moleskinning

-YHC has yet to spill merlot at F3, but came close on 2 occasions.  One at YHC’s earlier postings at FT, Haze was there.  Two, upon the first time YHC encountered Hairburners.  YHC has loved them ever since.  As soon as Spackler asked me to Q, this had been brewing for a week.

-YHC wonder how many of the PAX would have preferred Hairburners to Jacob’s Ladder.  Spackler, said he would have take then plates.  Alf, however, noted that the hill we did was nothing.  No hill intimidates him after the BRR.

-Strawberry must be the adventurous/curious type.  He could not resist failing to choose the unknown/surprise workout, even if it happened to be worse than hair burners.  However, the suck factor was most likely comparable.

– Tclaps to Pulled Pork, Alf, Morning After.  Pushing it hard today.  Pulled Pork was blazing on the hariburners.  His two team mates should take him to lunch, he saved them time on the plates.

– Others might have been pushing it hard out there, but YHC was too busy planning on the fly to practice good observation skills.

– YHC has met Pulled Pork, Rump Roast, and Brisket but just realized as I was entering the names into the PAX list the BBQ/meat connection.  YHC is very curious to the etymology of these handles/monikers.  You guys run a BBQ joint?  How did that go down?

The Elusive Ghost of Lon Chaney, Jr.

No SF was planted, perhaps someone planted the VSF….and after a minute or two of waiting for Honey Bee to arrive (he never did), 13 pax launched into another edition of Devil’s Turn.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

The fellowship pace was good…and then the 10k pace kicked in after a one-mile warmup; and TL, Haggis, TR and Fletch took off in a hurry heading for SCMS for some track work.

At the track, most of us were lapped by TL and Haggis.  Fletch joined in after a few laps, and before dusting YHC, he expressed his thankfulness that the good folks of SCMS leave the bathroom unlocked.

Not too much to report from the track other than Haggis mistook me for TL as he was passing me.  Not sure which one of us should take more offense at that?

Also, Champagne wants all pax to beware of the bricks on the outer lane of the track.  He about broke his foot this morning.  Actually there are no lanes on the track.  Apparently SCMS/CMS didn’t budget for paint on the track.

Hadn’t run that distance – most pax ran between 5.5 and 7.5 miles – since the BRR.  It’s not like riding a bicycle.  Yikes.

One further note to address the title of this backblast:  I’ve posted at DT 10-12 times roughly.  I’ve yet to actually see Wolfman post.  He gives stronger meaning to the LIFO title with each passing post.  He’s listed among the pax based on MallCop & The Mouth attesting to his presence.  #comeonman

Diet or Exercise? It Depends.

A dozen meatheads gathered in the gloom this morning, giddy with excitement over the cooler temps, the prospect of using a lighter bell, or both.  We did make good use of both, getting in plenty of work and 0.0 running.

The Thang:

Mosey to playground and circle up (more of a horseshoe, really)

COP:

  • SSH – 25 IC
  • IW – 25 IC
  • Slow Squat – 20 IC
  • (welcome, Bananas (#LIFO), who completes our horseshoe into a circle)
  • 2-hand swing – 15 IC

Superset 1:

  • Snatches – 10 per side
  • Hand Release Merkins – 15
  • Rinse & Repeat 5 times total, dropping the counts to 5 snatches/side & 10 merkins for rounds 4 & 5

4 Turkish Getups (2/side) & 10 pullups

Superset 2:

  • Bottoms-up Press – 5 per side (lighter bell recommended)
  • Teabag Squats (aka deadlifts) – 25
  • Rinse & Repeat 3 times total

4 Turkish Getups (2/side) & 10 pullups

Superset 3:

  • Lawnmower Rows – 15 per side

Superset 4:

  • 1-hand swing – 10 per side
  • Cleans – 10 per side

Time – Done

COT

Announcements:

  • F3 Shoe Drive for Charlotte Rescue Mission – bring used shoes to any workout site the week of Nov 10-15th.  If they’re falling apart, don’t bring them.  If they’re smelly, wash them.  Otherwise, treat yourself to a new pair and donate your old ones to someone who needs them.
  • Area 51 Christmas Party – Dec 6, Sugar Creek Brewery – more details to come
  • Kevlar – Tiger Rag on Q tomorrow
  • Joust – Busch on Q tomorrow
  • Meathead shirts – yes, the rumor is true.  A sleeveless Meathead shirt is in the works.  Keep posting for more details (and to work on your guns).

Moleskin:

Lots of energy and mumblechatter this morning, which makes the workout seem less like work (except for the heavy pieces of iron lying about).  The mumblechatter continued loudly through COP, such that YHC isn’t quite sure of the counts, but no matter, we warmed up sufficiently anyway.  Thanks, Bananas, for joining our merry bunch in COP to complete our circle and give us an even dozen.

The mumblechatter came to an abrupt end after COP and the first set of TGU/pullups when YHC called for the Snatch/Merkin superset and to repeat it 5 times.  It was a unanimous #unsavory #crowdpleaser.  There was an audible thrown in to decrease the reps for rounds 4 & 5, so that we could maintain good form and there were no noted objections.

(The plan called for 5 rounds for all the supersets; however, YHC began audibling down, based on time running short and collective need.  Call out if what we completed is misrepresented, as I lost track and want to give us credit for the hard work we put in.)

The bottoms-up presses were a new move at Meathead, and all agreed with their potential for building grip strength, provided you didn’t smash in your face in the process.  Our lighter bells were not light enough, in some cases.  Let’s expect to see that one again, as we work to increase the grip strength of our non-dominant hand.  Note: many theories were floated as to the reason for difference in strength between dominant and non-dominant hands, but none were conclusive.

General consensus:  Turkish getups suck.  They’re hard, awkward, and we don’t like them.  But, like castor oil, it is said they’re good for you, so we pressed on.

The rest of the workout was the meat potatoes we all love: lawnmower rows, goblet squats, 1-hand swings, & cleans.  Not many complaints by this point, other than we were all pretty beat down by then.  Except, there were occasional malodorous emissions, which prompted the discussion:  is it the diet or the exercise?  A proposal was made for a mandatory pre-Meathead meal to control the source – more details forthcoming.  Additionally, consideration will be given to swapping out compression shorts for Depends, just in case.  #shart

Thanks to Busch for taking YHC seriously and bringing “all your bells”.  After double farmer carries to and from the playground, Busch’s four bells provided considerable variety for him, Bulldog, Brown, and the rest of S CLT.  Aye!

In addition to the Meathead shirt mentioned above, Brown announced a forthcoming full line of Meathead branded products, such as: cropped undershirts from his HS football days, zumba/parachute pants, logo’ed Depends, fanny packs, and more.  Launch date: TBD, as designs and angel investors are still being sought.

Thanks, as always, for the opportunity to lead.  It’s an honor, and a lot of fun.

Thanks, Busch, for the closing prayer.

Aye.

Bricks are HEAVY

17 of South Charlotte’s finest ignored of the call of the fartsack and gathered in the gloom for some brick work.

The Thang – Grab two bricks from Q’s truck and head out

COP

  • Squats X20
  • Man maker merkins X20
  • John Travolta (with brick) X10 each arm

Ladder of burpees and push presses – 1-5 burpees and 5-25 push presses

Mosey to baseball field for 9 “innings” – half group runs a lap around outfield and half perform called exercise

  1. Man maker merkins
  2. Freddy Mercury
  3. Turkish get-ups
  4. One legged squats
  5. One legged squats – opposite leg
  6. Squats
  7. Joker call – low flutter?
  8. RS call – six inches (what?)
  9. Burpees (group two conveniently did not hear me _ I think)

Mosey to playground for another ladder – 1-5 pull ups and 5-25 push presses

Mosey to field for final ladder – 5-10-15-10-5 man maker merkins with sprint down and back in between

COP – 3MOM with low dolly, Rosalita, and something else (I think)

Naked Moleskin

Someone got it right when they noted how heavy those little pavers can be after a few push presses.  Q was disappointed no one else (Joker particularly) grabbed the other “special” F3 brick.  Joker was Larry Bird all morning so I’ll make sure he gets a special brick next time.

Good push by the entire PAX as running with 2 bricks is harder than you might think by just looking at those innocent looking things in the trunk.
