Hop Cakes Galore

Hop Cakes Galore

The lure of Hop Cakes brought out the beasts today, drinkers of beer beasts that is. Both Spackler and Semi Gloss were there. It was their first post together since the summer of 2013. After Hairball completed his 14 point turn to get into a parking space (worst parking job ever)…we took off.

COP in Day Care lot with 20 SSH, 20 IW, and 15 Mt. Climbers. AYG to Davie Park for Hop Cakes. At the playground, do 10 derkins, 10 jump-ups, 10 pull-ups, and take a lap around the parking lot. Repeat x 4 for a total of 5 sets. Flutters x 40IC and Russian Twist x 15IC. Play frogger as we crossed Hwy 51 and did 7’s (diamonds and wide arms) on Windswept. Knee-up x 20IC and Flutters x 13IC (stupid car). Mosey back to day care with a stop at the fence for 11’s (dips and derkins). Monkey humpers x 38 in the day care parking lot. LBCs x 15IC. AYG back to start.

NM
Davie Park is a 1/2 mile from the Day Care. Kirk and Swiper took the early lead by bolting through the grass and cutting the corner #veteranmove. Did Kirk bring the case of Hop Cakes for the winner as I proudly marketed on twitter? We will never know as he won race. My guess is he is sitting in his office right now at 2:57pm enjoying his second can of the day. Congrats you earned it. Please take an Uber home.

Semi was my dark horse to win the Hop Cakes but the hoodie really held him back. The hood kind of acted like a sail in the wind. Next time big fella.

Yes, Swiper, I like Flutters. We were going to go for another 40IC but that car killed the plans on Windswept.

Dollywood was flying on the 7’s. He got in an extra set. It offset Spackler only doing 6’s.

Monkey Humpers in the front lot of the day care were a treat. I’m pretty sure I was the only one doing them #awkward. Kirk’s ankle monitor was going off b/c he was within 100 feet of a children’s school.

Semi with the takeout.

Old Course #Snoozefest

AYE. 14 of Area 51’s finest plus one FNG posted for the weekly Anvil beatdown, but they were all disappointed. It was a sleeper. Real snoozefest. Here’s more or less what transpired:

THE THANG
25 Merkins OYO
25 Monkey Humpers OYO (FNG very weirded out at this point)
#modified_disclaimer
Run to top of Entrance 4 and do 10 Burpees
Run on Rea to Bevington and do 10 Burpees
Run to Old Course Drive and do 10 Burpees
Plank/Mary while we wait for the six

Run to Old Course and Piper Glen intersection but at every:
Hill – 10 Monkey Humpers (70 total)
Trough – 10 Jump Squats (70 total)
Turn around and do 5 Burpees at every hill and trough (70 total)

For those of you counting, that’s just 100 Burpees. Sorry guys. I meant to do more.

AYG back to the church
Plank/Mary while we wait for the six
A bunch of sprints
Some more Monkey Humpers (can’t get enough)
A few more sprints

That’s it.

MOLESKIN
1. Yup, see? Easy. Just 3.2 miles and 100 Burpees plus a lot of monkeys humped. My legs are definitely not sore and I’ll bet no one elses are either.

2. FNG Thin Mint is freaky fast. I’m pretty sure he was hanging behind Alf and Lobsta just because he wasn’t exactly sure where to go or what to do or whether or not this F3 thing is a cult. It is, btw.

3. Larry Bird to Iron Horse. Fact – the guy is 55 and he’s a monster. Other fact – he lives on Old Course Drive but he managed to resist the temptation to post back to the #fartsack. That, my friends, deserves a Larry Bird.

4. Props to Purple Haze who posted this morning just to salve YHC’s wound from Saturday where only 5 pax posted for what had been advertised as a hard workout. That’s why I didn’t advertise this one and I made sure it was super easy. Like, super super easy. Didn’t y’all think it was easy?

ANNOUNCEMENTS
F3 10 Year Anniversary Party on 1/1/2021. Mark your calendars. I think Alf is hosting.

Moleskin:
This was my first Q at Dromedary, which was the AO of my very first F3 workout last October, when I could hardly keep up and was well behind everyone else trying to catch my breath and not throw up.
I think it was a good workout, everyone did great and pushed hard, I tried to keep this guys constantly moving, with active rest in between sets, I hope everybody enjoyed those SSH after the laps. Heard quite a bit of grunting which I take as good feedback.

Announcements:
Old MACDONALD had a farm E-I-E-I-O And on his farm he had a few baby goats, so if any of the the PAX’s boys and girls want to go see them, hold them and play with them get in contact with him, I took my daughter last weekend and she loved it.

Moleskine: chatty group with limited attention span which must be from city water. Don’t have as much prob in U-Co workouts. Savvy veteran move from the overly trusted Header this am. Dollywood was crushing his group on the lap runs until about 2/3 the way in, after ample sandbagging Header decides to go all in with one hard run and make an obvious scene to gain attention as the winner. lesson learned Dollywood. Great to see Robinhood out today, much respect! Sorry to surprise the group with the Q but Good Hands gave it up with a “sore back” which rhymes with “fartsack”. I may have smoked myself as I’m not as consistent as I should be but hope you got your money’s worth.

Revenge of the Starfish

Last time I led it was a skeleton crew so while I normally don’t want to repeat a workout from my last Q there were enough people back plus two new guys that I thought needed to experience this thang called the starfish.

Moleskin

Great to have everyone out and it was a smoker as usual.

  • Great to see Bernanke become a regular and a strong one at that.
  • Jabberwocky was pushing himself and while this stuff doesn’t get easier I promise you will continue to get stronger!
  • Lamont and Nomad… You guys kill it every week and give us younger guys the drive to keep getting stronger! #Respect!
  • Short Circuit it’s been great having you out keeping us older guys accountable!
  • Hoodie, your transition over the past year or so has been awesome
  • And CT/Glass Joe, always great to go through a beatdown by your sides over the years.

Happy got in touch with me after the beatdown apologizing for not making it but told me about his dad that went to the ER last night, please keep him (Charles) in your prayers and his mom (Linda) as she supports him through this tough time.

It was what we thought it was

A running workout. The PAX, both warned and prepared by a thorough pre-blast, gathered in the chilly gloom. Although lacking in any specifics or detail, the mandatory note of preparation did hit the high points and contained actual sentences, which is more than can be said for last week’s. T-claps to Alf for setting the pre-blast bar low. Here’s how we filled in the gaps:

The Thang-

Circle up in SCMS parking lot for SSH x25 IC

Mosey down 51 and partner up at intersection with Rea

Partner 1 runs down Rea toward Colony to the new bridge (+/-1mi), 25 merkins, return to Rea/51

Partner 2 runs down Rea toward Bevington to the turning lane just past 4-mile Creek Bridge, 25 merkins, return to Rea/51

25 partner hand-slap merkins

Flapjack directions down Rea with partner and repeat-o

Mixed in a little Mary and some squats in between rounds while the Six came in

Mosey back up 51 to SCMS, stopping at park entrance for another 25 merkins + Mary until the Six is in

Naked Moleskin

Great work by all PAX this AM. Was probably the last of the “cold” mornings, but definitely not the end of Beanie season. Tried to keep us moving and warm while covering some ground today…more new school FT rather than incorporating the Bootcamp half of the workout description. Not too much mumble chatter today, at least that YHC had the privilege of overhearing. Did see some FT vets choosing to modify (refusnik) during the Mary sessions to re-group the PAX. #promove Kotters to Hannibal – good to see you out and T-claps for the great take out. Also good to see some new faces at FT with Voodoo and Strawberry coming out and working hard. And in the extended darkness with the time change, YHC did not even recognize Runstopper until COT. Thanks to Haze and TL for the opportunity.

Announcements

None. They were not included in the pre-blast and therefore, not allowed.

The 21 Gun Salute

Where to start?  I guess the beginning, which was really last Tuesday.

Wrapping up the workout last Tuesday – conveniently linked HERE (it’s beautiful if only for the use of “short fingered vulgarian” – and Talkbox mentions that he will be celebrating his 40th birthday this (last) weekend.  It’s even in the announcements of the BB.  So anyway, YHC knew the kids were out of town and decided that the M and I could swing by after the Hornets game.  So we did – only at Legion instead of Sycamore.  There, I’m told by Sun Dancer that Talkbox has the Q this week.  Neither of them remember that occurring, which may speak more to the multi-hour celebration than my memory, or anything else.  They did fully remember harassing me about wardrobe decisions.

YHC rolls into OP at 0525, and Sun Dancer and Talkbox are already there.  Great…never saw the typical but not mandatory pre-blast, so fears allayed that we were good to go, only Talkbox has no idea.  They were trying to remember the name of the WIB that has all of the lunge walks, OR 21 gun salute.  That sounded better, so that was the “plan”.

The Thang

Run the “mile” the long way to Foxworth.

At the bottom, 21 merkins, 21 squats, 21 LBCs.  Sprint to the top.  1 burpee (increasing by 1 each trip).

Total of 10 trips.  Run the “mile” back to OP.

A little time left on the clock, so Mary to finish it out.  And done.

There was one more – someone chime in.

The Moleskine

For a last minute idea, that was executed to near perfection.  There was enough time on the clock to fit in 1 more trip, but there may have been a mutiny.  210 merkins, squats, LBCs + 55 burpees…no watch this morning, but I would guess 3ish miles with a lot of hill work.

I think 3-5 exercises is about the perfect number in this format.  By the end, merkins 16-21 became…labored, difficult…choose the word.  Burpees always suck, and the fact that they were working essentially the same muscles as the other exercises made them lots more fun.

Completely unrelated aside, but Pre-blasts – if not informative, don’t.  Examples:  “Here’s the workout / route for tomorrow”, “We’re going off campus, don’t be late”, “Gloves recommended”, “Bring your track / mud shoes” – all great reasons for a pre-blast.  Nash once appropriately pre-blasted “there will be bear crawls”, and then proceeded to have 20 minutes of them, which I skipped because I read the pre-blast AND I’m not a bear (copyright Swiper 2014). End aside.

Talkbox truly sprinted the uphills.  Apparently grabbed a nice PR on Strava for the Foxworth Hill #40?.  Geraldo’s light may have saved all of us from getting run over at some point, and he was polite enough to switch to the non-blinding red light too.  A lot of traffic on Foxworth before 6 AM – and who the heck waters their lawn in 38 degree weather at 0540?  Pretty much had the water on the entire time we were over there.  Very unwelcoming.

One Eye pulled away mid-way through when the talk got really weird, like “Keep Austin Weird” weird.  This discussion seemed to overshadow those of ACC dominance, the Providence (Sun Dancer = Friar) vs Carolina (YHC = UNC04) game, Hornets (big win), Daisy being a new father, babies cutely (or oddly for Sun Dancer) looking at things other than faces, how kids develop personalities, oddly layered wardrobe choices #Agony, whether Semi-Gloss really is gone for good, etc.

I think that about covers it.

F3 Sixth Sense Palmetto 200 – The Movie

I’ve written, re-written, and re-written this Back Blast 4-5 times now… and this is the version I’m going with! Unfortunately, a Back Blast doesn’t do justice to what our F3 Sixth Sense Palmetto 200 Ultra Team just accomplished… but it will have to do until the movie comes out!

The Thang:
Pretty simple… get 6 runners together, pile into a van on a Friday morning, head to Columbia/Lexington, run 205.4 miles, then come home… right??

Moleskine:
To say I’m extremely proud of what our team accomplished, and thankful for the men I got to share this experience with over this past weekend is an understatement.  I will try to capture more thoughts later to share with others, but I want to get this out sooner than later!! I’ll keep this short and sweet…  This was an INCREDIBLE team effort!

For the numbers, we completed the course in just over 27-hours, so I think the math turns out to be right at/or just under 8:00 min/mile.

205.4 miles isn’t easy with 9 guys, 12 guys… heck with 36 guys!! We chose the challenge of running with 6 runners:  Sensei/Slim Fast, Dory, Cheese Curd, Sacagawea, Mr. Brady and Gerber.  Mermaid was an original runner, but through an untimely injury, he served the team as driver.

Anyone that has run in a relay like this, including BRR, knows that injuries, jobs, family… life…. require pluses and minuses from the team. Ours was no exception.   We had team changes in November, December, January, February, and as late as 10-days before the run.

On paper, our strength as a team was noted by several fast runners… Mr. Brady, Sacagawea, Gerber, Dory… those of you that do running workouts with these guys know how fast and strong they are.

But our true strength showed in how we overcame many obstacles before and during the race. This is what I wanted to recap in the Back Blast.

  1. Unfortunately, one of our runners wasn’t feeling fully recovered, so we needed to find someone within 10 days of the race. Cheese Curd answered the call!  Sensei and I ran the Palmetto 200 with CC last year, and I think I remember him say things like… “Never again..” “Count me out…” “No means No…” “I hate you Slim Fast…” or something along those lines. But he stepped up in a HUGE way. I know he hadn’t trained for this, but he said “Yes” anyway. Before the race, during the race… He always said “Whatever you need…” CC ran nearly 25 miles over 6 legs, which included taking an impromptu extra leg when Gerber was running late to meet us on the course. We can’t thank CC enough!!
  2. So why was Gerber running late to meet us on the course? In February, he took a new job (t-claps) but quickly learned his first 2 weeks of orientation would require him to be in Charlotte through lunch on Friday of race day. We initially thought we had a replacement for him, but then we ended up needing him. So we started the race without Gerber, and anticipated Gerber to meet us around 3:00 on the course.  Unfortunately, Gerber’s meetings didn’t END until 3:00 PM on Friday afternoon… He still drove down and met us at Elloree to start a 7.4 mile leg at 6:30 JIT!!! He hopped out of his car, ran 7+ miles… then 8.8 miles 3 legs later. HUGE thanks to Gerber for making it work… we couldn’t have done this without his desire to support the team even with the scheduling complexities! STRONG! Gerber ended up with 33 miles over 5 legs.
  3. Sensei and I have run together many miles. When we talked about running the P200 as an Ultra Team, Sensei and I knew we would run the legs together, and that we would need to train a lot. And we did!! Sensei is incredible! We put in 25-30 miles/week in Jan/Feb/Mar… the increased training caused him some leg/achilles pain, but he kept working through it. Sensei runs fearlessly… as he does everything!  On our 2nd leg, which was leg #5 2.6 miles, we were on Hwy 178 with 18-wheelers, big trucks, small trucks, cars, etc passing us at 55+ mph.  We had the white line and about 1.5 feet of asphalt to the grass… and Sensei never stopped!  He’s UNSTOPPABLE!!  Unfortunately, after our 4th leg for 18+ miles, the injury returned, and it was just too much… Sensei had to drop out. He battled all the way until he couldn’t go further. I know it killed him to not run his final 3 legs… but we both learned a lot about our training approach, and what we’ll do differently for the next Ultra team we run with. Sensei has nothing to be disappointed about, and I know he will come back stronger from the experience.
  4. Those who workout/run with Dory know how strong he is. He brought his A-game to Palmetto quietly, and confidently. Unfortunately, similar to Sensei, Dory experienced some IT band issues during his 4th leg Friday night. We had to replace him in the middle of a leg even though he wanted to keep going… he was basically limping along. And similar to Sensei, it killed Dory to have to sit out, but it was by far the right answer. There was no reason to push it. Dory kept encouraging the team, and gave everything up until he couldn’t run further. Disappointed, I know… but strong in adversity! Dory ended up with 26 miles over 4 legs.
  5. I didn’t know Sacagawea prior to the Palmetto 200… so our first meeting in person was in Arbo ABC parking lot. I’m not going to say Sacagawea is a strong and fast runner, not because it’s not true… but because I don’t want anyone stealing him from any teams we put together! This was his first relay experience, and he calmly comes out and runs sub-7 minute miles for his first 5 legs… then maintains low/sub 7-minute miles for his 6th leg which was a long 9+ miles on Saturday morning onto Isle of Palm. Ask anyone who has run that Leg #31… it is a KILLER… Sacagawea SLAYED IT!!! But not only is he a great runner… he just a plain great guy! I am so thankful to get to spend the weekend with him and getting to know him… and I can’t wait until we get to do something like this again! Sacagawea ended up with 35.6 miles over 6 legs.
  6. Then there is Mr. Brady… He denies it, but this was his bird-brained idea to begin with!  Back in the Fall he said something stupid like… “Hey Slim Fast, let’s do the Palmetto 200 as an Ultra Team… You, me, Sensei… we’ll see who else will join us…” So that’s what we did. What a team joined us!!   Mr. Brady and I have done many CSAUP events together… Mud Run, 2x BRR, many tweet and meet runs… RumRunner, Ghost Runner, Night Train, Soul Train, Train Train… I digress. Mr. Brady is just strong no matter how you slice it! Ok… he sweats a lot… but he earns it! Mr. Brady rented the van for us, picked up the van, returned the van… More impressively is that Mr. Brady constructed a shelving system in the back of the van to hold all of our stuff! It was PERFECT! But he’s not just another pretty-faced architect! Mr. Brady’s first two legs were 10.5 miles, then 8.5 miles… all within about 4 hours! If that wasn’t enough, Mr. Brady jumped in for Dory in the middle of the night to finish the leg he was injured on, and then picked up one of Dory’s remaining 2 legs. Mr. Brady ended the race with 43+ miles over 7.25 legs. That is nothing but STRONG!  I can’t wait to see what crazy event he’ll talk me into next!
  7. I have to finish by gushing over Mermaid! He was one of our original runners, but as many of you know, he experienced a meniscus tear during training. He was devastated… we were all devastated!  Mermaid has driven for our BRR team the past 2 years, but only drove this last year because he said he committed to drive, even though he was fit enough to run. Mermaid is a man that honors his commitments! So I thought this would be the chance to have him run with us! Unfortunately that wasn’t God’s plan.   However, in the end, I think he filled a bigger role than he could imagine. Mermaid drove our van for 36 straight hours… he drove from Charlotte to Lexington, he drove all day, all night, Saturday morning and drove home from Charleston. He encouraged, he was always there for runners coming in… it was HUGE! I know he wanted to run… and I will make sure that happens… but for this race this year… his role was absolutely critical! Mermaid showed an incredible servant heart, and we all want him to know how much that was demonstrated, recognized, and deeply appreciated!!

I know these guys didn’t make any of these physical and personal sacrifices for recognition… they made these sacrifices because that is what Brothers do for each other in good times… and in times of adversity!

I wanted the PAX of Area 51 to know what these men did over this last weekend!  Everyone contributed to the team effort!  They did more than just run a relay… they exemplified the true spirit of F3!

I was honored to be part of their team, and I’m honored to call them my Brothers! Aye!
