Ladder Work

Ladder Work

7 pax decided to join me for a cool crisp fall workout.  I knew today’s numbers would be low with some of the usual Saturdayer’s participating in Need for Speed and Bone Frog (thank god we won’t have to hear anymore announcements).

The general theme of today’s workout was ladders – both count and actual ladders.  I had the speaker on and ready to go.  6:30 – lets get it.

Warm Up

Mosey around the parking lot down towards the cul de sac.  Circle up.

  • 20 Big Ten’s (SSH)
  • Deconstructed Burpees (Complements of Moneyball) in ladder count down.  I started with 7 squats, 7 merkins, 7 in/outs, and 7 bobby hurley’s.  Went to my left with the next pax counting 6, then 5, all the way to 1.  I enjoyed passing off the count to help me catch my breath to allow some of the newer guys a short opportunity to lead.  (Knish is slatted for a VQ at Chiseled in January – but I challenge the other site Q’s to get him leading before then.  Chainsaw is another one I’d love to see a VQ from in the coming weeks).
  • Jimmy Duggans – center, right, then left.

The Thang

Partner up for Partner Pulls up the hill to the parking lot entrance switching out as you are tired.  Since there were 7 I played odd man out and lunge walked.

Partner Push from the parking lot entrance to the Elementary School Entrance.  I jumped in with Popeye and Jingles to do a 3 person round robin.  Legs were burning pretty hard by the time we reached the school entrance.  Recalculating and Knish killed it and beat us there so I had them Mary with SSH’s to keep the heart rate up.

Rock Work

  • One Partner curls while other partner runs up the hill to the main road and back.  2 times (no curl count).  After running to the top of the street I decided it was a little far and asked the pax to modify to the second neighborhood road to cut off a 100 yards from the first run.  Mary waiting on the 6
  • One Partner does overhead tricep extension while the other partner runs up hill towards the school.  2 rounds.  Put rocks up.

Grab curb for tricep dip ladders.  I started count with 7 and passed the counting down to each pax  until we reached one.  I challenged to pax once we started not to go down and try to hold.  I made it to 2 before my arms gave out.  Good work from those that lasted until the end.

Mosey to the bus parking lot where I had weights and ladders waiting on us.

Circle up for LBC’s and Pull Ups.  Two pax perform a minimum of 10 pull ups (more if you can) while the rest of the pax start LBC’s.  Challenged those that couldn’t do a pull up to do a modified jump pull up.  Goal was to do 100 LBC’s in the time it took all pax to complete 10 pull ups.  Timing was just right.

Weights and Ladder Work.  One Partner does weights while the other runs to the other end of the parking lot for a ladder exercise then returns to switches out with weights partner.  Asked pax to try and stay together at the ladder and run back together so that the two groups don’t get separated.

  • Weights (Dumbbells):
    • Chest Press with 30 lbs
    • Hammer Curl with 20 or 25 lbs
    • Tricep extension with 40, 25, or 20 lbs
    • Front raise & side raise with 15 or 10 lbs
    • Upright Row to chin with two 15 lb keddle bells
    • Military press with one 40 lb dumbbell
    • Goblet squat with 50 lb
    • Good morning with 50 lb
  • Ladder – two rope ladders put together.  If you ever played football, these exercises should be simple to follow.  Unfortunately I learned several pax today didn’t play football.
    • SSH’s with feet going outside ladder and then inside ladder
    • High knees – Chop each foot inside each square with high knees
    • Heisman – hard to explain, easier to show.  Start with left foot outside left ladder, chop both feet inside ladder, then end with right foot on right side of ladder.  Key is to keep your arms moving.
    • Bunny Hop – Outside left, inside, outside right, inside…….
    • Up Up Down Down – Facing side of ladder, chop feet in each square and back below each square the length of the ladder
    • Plank Jack hand walk – Plank Jack feet outside ladder and then inside each square.  (Found it easier if I did it mixed with a bear crawl?
    • Plank hands right – plank position and move hands to the right.  No Merkins
    • Plank hands left

Finished the 8 round weights/ladder work with only minutes to spare.  Lets mosey back to the start.  We arrived at the start right at 7:30.  I had planned to finish up with AC/DC Thunderstruck but ran out of time….or did I?  I left it up to the pax….do you want to end on time, or do you want to go 5 minutes over and fulfill my promise to get 100 Merkins in.  Vote was almost unanimous…Thunderstruck it is.   Pax do mountain climbers until you hear the word Thunder at which point you do a Merkin.  There are two points in the song that give opportunity for air presses.  We took advantage of that.  Appropriately 33 merkins performed.  I was gassed, and  by the look of it, so was everyone else.  Zinfandel got it on video.  I’m sure social media team will use it against me soon, be on the look out.

Moleskin

  • Great work today.  Everyone worked hard.  There was very little complaining (even by the Q).
  • Thanks to Southern Belle for allowing me to use his dumbbells and ladders.  He was a last minute scratch as a pestering cold has got him down.  Briarcrest currently has several on the IR list.  Beckham (knee), Dancing Bear (calf), Southern Belle (cold), and Schnieder (bar).  We hope to get our strong Briarcrest numbers back up to normal soon.
  • It was great seeing Popeye out there today.  Guy is always a ball full of positive energy and love having him out at workouts.  Just a genuinely good dude.  Glad to hear his wife is recovering well from knee surgery.
  • Jingles and Zinfandel passed me several times on the up hill runs.  I may have let out a cuss word in their direction.  My apologies boys.  Just my own frustration at myself coming out and being manifested towards you.  Great work today out of both of you.
    • Jingles has always had sneaky speed when it came to running.  At what point do I realize this and it is no longer sneaky speed?
    • Zinfandel’s hard work has been showing results.  When he first started he was the six….like the kind of six that stops running 1/4 way through the workout and modifies everything.  Dude is killing it and has passed me in cardio ability.  I believe I’m ready to hand over my form police badge and whistle to him as well.
  • Knish worked hard today along with Recalculating.  Love seeing the new guys come out and stick with it.  Adds new elements – oh who am I kidding, it just gives me fresh meat to pick on.  Keep it up!
  • Recalculating was his normal “get off my lawn” grumpy old guy self.  I’ve been accused of being a younger, much more out of shape version of Recalculating lately – scary.   Good work today and thanks for keeping the Q’s accountable.  You push us to work hard and work the pax harder.
  • Chainsaw worked hard today.  Cut a couple jokes at his son-n-laws expense which of course I enjoyed.  Glad to have him a part of the group.  He’s jumped right in and become one of us.
  • We burned 685 calories while only covering just over 2 miles.  I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but I will take this time again to remind the pax that there are other ways to burn calories than running.  Be creative with your Q’s.  Some of us (me) hate running and the reason we do bootcamps is to sneak our cardio in through other means.  We burned 685 calories in 2 miles while the 5+ mile Q only burned 650.  Ok, enough soap box.

Announcements

  • Thoughts are with Mad Dog as he goes through additional tests this morning.  Apparently the overnight nurse saw something she liked last night according to his GroupMe post.
  • Dancing Bear dropping off toiletry donations to the Charlotte Homeless Shelter on Monday.  Get your last minute donations in at Flash or Ignition.
  • Christmas Party Nov 30th at Providence Downs South Clubhouse.  Look to GroupMe News Channel for more info.
  • WUC Effie awards at Friday, Dec 7th at the Briarcrest Club House.  If you can make it, I highly recommend it.  Its a great opportunity to laugh with pax over a beer.  I got a fairly good ab workout in from laughter at last years 1st annual Effie Awards.
  • Dunkin Doughnuts for Coffeteria.  Unfortunately the Wolfpack lost on Thursday night so no free coffee (Wah Wah).
  • Thanks to Zinfandel for taking us out.

I’m pretty sure that’s what Tuck said.

It’s been a while since I posted at The Brave.  Always a good workout, but just a bit farther than my usual morning commute.  Plus you know, 5:15 and all.  On a Friday.  Anywho, after a date switch due to some conflicts at Cerberus, here it is in early November and it’s go time at The Brave.

I got a note from Tuck earlier in the week to confirm the Q.  He then followed up with this commentary.  “So the Vagabond is the next day, and well guys (me) want to take it easy and not really go hard on Friday.  So maybe you could make it easy with a heavy dose of imperial walkers  and maybe some cherry pickers.  Finished with 45 minutes of cool down, stretching, talking about our feelings and a book review of the latest best selling romance novel.  Also if you have a bluetooth speaker, I have the Michael Bolton channel locked in my Spotify favorites.   One last thing, I was thinking it would be great to start inviting women to the workouts.”

Maybe that’s not exactly what he said, but that’s what I heard.  And either way, I ignored it.

The Thing:

Keeping it simple.  Fast Mosey to the base of Murderhorn with a pit stop along the way for Merkins in the street while waiting on the six.

Grab a rock and take it to the bottom of the hill.

Pretty much stolen from McGee’s effort on 5 Knolls.

14’s on the hill with rock thrusters at the bottom and burpees at the top.  Starting with 13 thrusters and 1 burpee on top.

Most men got through 10 rounds.  Purell and Fraiser got 11.  Then we ran back with some Mary for the last 2 minutes.

Moleskin:

14’s was aggressive.  It’s a big hill and I wanted to keep the rep numbers a little higher to keep it meaningful.  Plus it was just enough to make you think you could finish without being disheartening.  In all cases, its a grinder.

Announcements:

A bunch:  SOB and A51 Christmas Party’s.  Great Wolf Lodge tonight. Vagabond tomorrow morning.  Genesis starts at Blakeovery location in Blakeny – 5:15 Monday.  Fire Hazard promised sandbags.  Turkey Jam workout on Thanksgiving Day.

No Girls Allowed

17 PAX were ready for an Impromptu workout in the rain not knowing whether Deadwood or BreadBowl was on Q.  The rest Fartsacked the morning away dreaming of fairy tales instead of showing up for a verbal dress down by Bread Bowl .  Air horn and whistle in hand, the PAX asked for shelter while Bread Bowl pronounced, stop being a girl.  Even dad got a lecture for not charging his phone to play music for the workout.  Deadwood brought a jar to collect fees for any cussing in front of Bread Bowl given he is 11 years old but thinks he is 35 and can bring out the best in each of us.

Let’s MOSEY:

Bread Bowl was off to the races with a fast lap around the parking lot at a speed not previously seen before given Bread Bowl snowbirds at the back of the PAX.

  • Potato Pickers X 20
  • Moroccan Arm Rotations X 20
  • Imperial Walker X 20
  • Parker Peters X 20

The Thang-

  • Mosey to the lights on the path
    • At each light, 10 jump squats and 10 Peter Parkers
    • SSH at the end while waiting for the six
    • Grab a brick because it was too muddy to get to the rocks
      • Enter the after workout lecture by Bread Bowl to Doughboy that it was just mud and why can the PAX just suck it up and get dirty.
    • 10X Curls and 10X Shoulder Presses at each light on the way up the path
  • In the parking lot, do 20X Tricept Extensions and run two lines, run back
    • Add two lines to each run and back for tricept extensions
    • Go until you have finished the entire length of the parking lot
    • Realize you still have the bricks
  • Back to the Path
    • Do 10, I mean 5X burpees at each light back down the path.
    • Bread Bowl tried to audible to skipping lights but the PAX refused and finished out the path
  • Find Some Wall
    • 50X Jabs in Cadence
    • 50X Air  Presses
  • Mosey to the front of the middle school
    • 50X dips, one leg out for some of us.
    • $20 bet from MoneyBall to Bread Bowl if he could beat him to the front.  Unfortunately, Bread Bowl was seen huffing air about halfway there.  Maybe someday.
  • Jail Break to the start of the workout
    • Bread Bowl was warned about the time but said he had ideas for the end.  Q Jack was denied.
    • Protractor with the strangest count possible.  Lots of 1 to 10 degrees to torture the abs
    • Lieutenant Dan to finish out the time.
      • Went from one to 6 normally, then directly to 10 to finish out the torture.

COT

Bread Bowl always delivers a healthy dose of adult humor to go along with every workout.  The PAX is very welcoming to an 11 year old leading a group of amazing men.  Sometimes the counting and form are suspect but they keep going knowing he is pushing himself each moment.  The workouts are legit for an 11 year old who is not shy from trying to bring on complaints and it is amazing to experience as a father.  To this, I say thank you to the PAX for it being more than just a workout and the ability to grow each of us, no matter the age.

Today my brother Eric would have turned 41. He took his own life almost 7 years ago after a decade long battle with opioids, mostly. He died on March 9, 2012. I dedicated my work today to him. I think of him every day and more on days like today. Miss him terribly and wish things could have been different. He lost hope.

Rock Thrill posted today. He, too, lost his brother. Joe Davis died of an accidental overdose after a long period of sobriety. The Davis Family has put on the Joe Davis Recovery Run for 6 years. The 7th Annual is March 9, 2019. Coincidentally, the date of my brother’s death. This race has raised over $200,000 to benefit the Keystone Substance Abuse Center in Rock Hill, SC. These funds provide HOPE for those who have lost it, or are close to losing it. Support of this race has a direct impact on our community. My challenge to our PAX today was to support this race and to tell at least one other person about it today. We are 4 months out. Please consider supporting. 52 registered already. Join us March 9 or support by sleeping in for the cause or sponsoring (several ways to do this). Big T-claps to Rock Thrill and the Davis family for pouring themselves into the race and the good they facilitate in the community. Personally, this race has given my family a way to help and to remember my brother Eric. Sincere thanks for that. The race was done the first Saturday in January for the first 6 years. It was bitter cold most of those years. Hopeful for better race day weather.

The Elusive Indian Land BackBlast

6 men gathered in the shadows of Indian Land Elementary this morning, 4 did the pre-run.  We do this every Thursday but not everybody knows this because of a poor history of back blasts… no more!

The Thang:

Quick warm-up at the launch point.  10 low slow squats IC, 20 MCs IC, six inches/plank x 5, 10 windmills IC.

Grab your headlamp and lets mosey across the street to the neighborhood with all the hills!  Staying together, do the called exercise at the bottom, run hard up the hill, easy back down.  5 rounds total: merkins x 20, low slow merkins x 10, flutter/LBCs x 20, diamond merkins x 10 IC, wide arm merkins x 10 IC.

Mosey back to the school and around to the back playground.  AMRAP for ~12 minutes as follows: take 1/2 of your one set max pullups and do pullups/5 squats 3X then run across to the school for 10 donkey kicks.  That’s one round.  Got 3 – 3.5 rounds in per PAX.

Mosey to the front of the school and grab some tall wall. Civilian count – 10 muscle ups, then people’s chair/50 air presses.  Repeato.  Circle up for 10 aquamans, 10 seal merkins, IC.  Go around the circle for Mary and time called.

Announcements: Christmas Party 11/30!  Vagabond this weekend.

Is that a new Mary Q car?

With a looming cold snap headed our way, 17 men decided to enjoy the last 50+ degree morning for a while by coming to Hydra.  Yesterday, in between Trump tweets of Sessions resigning and CNN reporters getting kicked out of the White House (that’s not a political statement by me…..just the facts), I let the pax know via TwitterFaceLinkedSnap that we would be off campus the whole time and to pack some running shoes.

Hannibal originally had been assigned Q today, but business travels took him to the Windy City.  Sprockets and I both volunteered to take his spot.  Rather than arm wrestling on it (Sprockets would win, by the way), we settled on Sprockets Qing the Mary and I would take care of the rest.

Here’s how it went:

Warm-Up:

  • 15 SSH
  • 15 Plank Jacks (Gummy pointed out a PJ is still a SSH, except you’re on the ground….gotta get up pretty early to fool that guy!)

The Thang:

We ran out of the OPE campus and started down Summerlin.  Along the way, we paused at each street light for 10 CDD’s (maybe 7 lights?).  At the intersection of Summerlin and Abbotswood, we did the following:

  • 15 box cutters as called by Sprockets (you could tell Sprockets did his homework and dug up some uncommon, yet challenging Mary…well done, boy!)
  • The OP Pipe!  Partner up and do 10 hand-slap merkins.  Separate and run up Abbotswood in either direction and stop at the top of either hill for 10 merkins OYO.  Run back to meet your partner for another 10 HS Merkins.  Conduct 3 rounds.
  • Mosey to the top of Abbotswood and Brynwood.  Sprockets Q’d us with 15 or 20 sweat angels.

We ran down Brynwood toward the high rent district of Rea/Colony.  While on Brynwood we stopped for 10 squats at each light post.  We planked a little then continued on toward Stonecroft Park.  Sprockets decided Turkish situps were the Mary du jour while we waited on the six on Stonecroft Park.

Continue our mosey to the medical building behind Colony Place.  We scared a CMPD officer who was parked behind the building.  He immediately drove away.  To be fair, the first person he saw was Spackler…….wouldn’t you immediately drive away, too?!

While in that parking lot:

  • Bear crawl Indian Run (lots of grumbling….blame Gummy as I got it from him).
  • Merkin Circle (even more grumbling!…..this is a Deep Dish favorite, though and as I was not going to disappoint my boy!)

Mosey to the traffic circle at Colony Place.  Grab some wall/chair/bench for:

  • 10 dips
  • 10 step-ups
  • 10 derkins

Repeato

My watch said 6:03 at this point, so……Mosey back to OPE.  We had 4 minutes left at OPE so this morning’s version of Vanna White (i.e. Sprockets) took us through:

  • Rosalita
  • Flutter
  • LBCs
  • Freddy Mercury

That’s a wrap!

Moleskin:

A few items I want to note right off the bat for summary:

  • Semi Gloss took off  his t shirt and ran with just a pullover on.  He also decided to not zip up the pullover, revealing plenty of unmanageable chest hair.  He looked like a modern day Andy Gibb since his shirt was unzipped so low.  Bold, my brother….bold!
  • Someone two pax ahead of me dropped anchor while we were doing the bear crawl indian run…..I had to crawl through that cloud!  I’d blame it on Puddin’ Pop…..but, let’s be honest….do you really think PP even did that exercise?!
  • Jet Fuel just got back from Japan yesterday afternoon and was suffering badly from jet lag.  He still looked like a Dad model in a Dick’s Sporting Good magazine with hair perfectly combed and t shirt tucked in.  I bet you the camera loves that guy!
  • Somebody called Thunder Road “TR” when he first walked up to the site.  I thought for a second the Area 51 Forefather Tiger Rag (anyone seen him since 1985?) was with us.  Did I need to call for hairburners if that was the case?  Anyway, it was just a misunderstanding.
  • Queen and One Eye are still fast and do not tire…..old news!

We logged about 2.7 miles and were only on OPE’s campus for about 5 minutes.  Aside from the mileage, we also tackled 115 merkins and over two hundred core exercises!  Not bad!  Marge and Queen, thanks for letting me lead this morning.  Men, it was and always will be an honor!  Sprockets, thanks for having my back on Mary!  Never done that particular type of Q share before, but it gave this old man a chance to catch his breath a few times!

Spackler, thanks for the take-out/prayer!

Arena’s got the Q next week, so he’ll probably ask Stone Cold to cover last minute.

Moleskine

‘Twas a good group of veterans who came on down to the scout hut- quite a few pre runners as well. There was quite a protest regarding the Warrior II Bend- for some reason the group thought I was making it up… which was of course false . IT’S ON THE INTERNET Y’ALL.

Music today was the spotify playlist created by Panthers Beat writer Jordan Rodrigue which is all the songs she has heard the Panthers (specifically QB Cam Newton) play during practice. Only bummer was that we might have heard three songs because… so… many… ads. And Publix- we get that you are an awesome place to shop, but stop beating it over our heads! We want to listen to music! Even with said ads, this is a great playlist to listen to-if interested you can do so here .

Speaking of Cam, as you might be aware, he’s got swag in the pre game/post game outfit department. Which lead me to this  weird thought experiment- if F3 Area 51 had their own pre workout/post workout outfits, who would show up and show their swag? This led to what I’m proud to say is  the first Area 51 #DripChroniclesVOL1 POWER RANKING (I shall abstain since I am doing said ranking):

  1. Chopper- likes to make an entrance- rollin in right at 6:31AM. Just oozes swag to me- got the confidence to show up when all eyes are on him. He currently takes the top spot.
  2. Lois- Dude dressed up as himself for Halloween back from the good ole days of Wade Hampton high. That takes some cajones that would translate over at the podium after the big win. Would also translate well when CROOTIN
  3.  Tie- Madison and Gypsy- Guys showed up to post in complimentary pink shirts. Not only does it take a confident man to wear pink, but to wear a complimentary shade to your brother…. just drippin over here.
  4. Swiss Miss- Normally rocking the gray sweatshirt to Gumby, but had to swap out today for the Area 51 branded gear. Being on brand  has a swag of its own.
  5. Beaver- One of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet- and one who would bring a classic look back. Think the Sean Connery James Bond look. Unfortunately, them dang millenials don’t have respect for anything good in life- hence the lower ranking.
  6. Arena-  First PAX on the pre run, and last one done. Just a gritty, fundamental player. Deceptive speed,  beats you on the field so doesn’t need to mess with any of the pansy outfit mess after the game #gameswag.

Grateful for the opportunity to lead- see yall back in the gloom soon.

A Safe Place

13 Pax gathered in the well lit Gloom of Matthews Elementary for the second November 2018 edition of Peak 51.

YHC arrived at 0516, just in time to see the Spartans off and hoping to secretly transport the Weinke to its destination in the lower parking lot. Much to my chagrin, Bernie clocked in earlier and caught me in the act. Keeping a massive Weinke under wraps is no easy feat.

We moseyed to the parking lot behind the school, where the Pax caught a glimpse of the magical Weinke board and its 12 exercises. The concept was equal parts simple and terrible. Perform 15 reps of exercise 1, run a lap around the track (watch out for the mud on the back stretch!), consult the Weinke for the next exercise, perform 15 reps of exercise 1, then 15 reps of exercise 2, run a lap, and so forth. Exercises were as follows:

  1. LBC

Witch Doctor completed the entire Weinke, and the remaining Pax ended somewhere around 9, 10, or 11. Mumblechatter was low initially, but picked up as we embraced the suck and put in a solid 45 minutes of work. A great time was had by all.

Couple of announcements this morning:

  • Vagabond CSAUP, Saturday Nov.10.
  • Speed for Need: Let Them Soar 5K right here in Matthews, on Saturday Nov. 10.

Is the Durkin Doer also the Leap Froger?

Pax 6 showed out this morning at the Valley for some Funny Farm fashion F3 fun (too much alliteration?)  The mumble chatter after the workout centered around head nods and “flaccid” arms.  Everyone involved had a good time, but didn’t quite know how to describe what happened.  Thanks for leading these men Funny!

THE MOLESKIN: Awesome cool morning! No rain so we avoided wearing our high waters. Most of us have flaccid arms due to the leap frogging durkins. There might be a pill for that. Mcstuffins? Advil? YHC just about hurled 3 times on the Huntingtowne Farms sprint. I think we’ve all got some PR’s out there now. Watch out for mud and branches in the woods, when completing fundamental stretching.
