The WAMRAP Pyramid

The WAMRAP Pyramid

AYE. YHC rolled up to the Waverly Viva Chicken expecting to see…well…the normal crew. Alf. Orange Whip. Purell – wait, where’s Purell? Didn’t he HC the night before? More on this in a moment, but off we went to the parking deck for the WAMRAP Pyramid.

THE ROUNDS
1. 20 Jump Squats at the bottom of the ramp, 20 Exploding Merkins at the top, count round with a Burpee
2. 20 Squats / 20 Merkins + Burpee count
3. 20 Sister Mary Catherines / 20 Freddy Mercuries + Burpee count
When we hit 10 rounds and 10 Burpees, start working back down the pyramid
Total Burps – 100

Finish up with some Mary

THE MOLESKIN
1. This one was a smoker. Constant movement. Orange Whip kept talking about how much fun he was having and how this was exactly what he needed, so, you know, he’s crazy.

2. We finished up the pyramid faster than anticipated and had time left for Mary. I guess we could have kept going but…nah.

3. As we rolled back to the launchpad, we saw Purell running sprints in the parking lot. Apparently he ran up and around the deck but not on the ramps, which is where we were the whole time. Sorry dude. We waited for you until 5:33.

Come check out WAMRAP next week.  WAMRAP deserves to live, damn it. The guys in Weddington ripped off the idea (no hate, just saying) and had 12 dudes show up when we had 3 that same week. What do I need to do to convince you that a) you will not die, b) you will be guaranteed to get a great workout and c) I will not annoy you with my usual constant #mumblechatter because I can’t talk during a WAMRAP workout.

That’s my rant. See you next week.

2020 Campaign Kickoff

(Posted on behalf of The Wall)

Four men gathered at Shiloh Elementary to get a jump start on the 2020 election season on a pleasantly warmish morning for November. That’s a big crowd for Conviction. All vets, but I disclaimed anyway as I could sense the pax ready to pounce on any VQ errors and omissions. Not to worry there would be plenty more opportunities for that in the next 45 minutes.

Mosey through the parking lot

COP

Windmills x 12 IC
Supermans Mountain climbers x 20 IC
Merkins x 10 IC
Imperial Walkers x 20 IC

The Thang
Bearway to Heaven – bearcrawl 6 parkings spots then 1 merkin; bearcrawl 5 spot then 2 merkins etc.
Mosey around to the bus parking lot – sets of run/monkey humpers/run/low slow squat.
Partner work. Run around the track in opposite directions, then hand-slap merkins at halfway points.
To the playground for three sets of derkins, supines, and dips.
To the rock pile for two sets of curls, presses, and skull crushers.

Mosey back to the front lot for

6 MoM
Each pax called an exercise. Did Freddie Mercs, dolly, back scratchers, lbcs, and a couple of other things I don’t remember.
Moleskin
Four men out and four men back.

SometimesI think we sort of take that for granted.

Thanks to Hair Band for the timely advice. Saved me from leading the pax in a game of cheez wiz roulette through moving school busses. Thanks also for not over correcting on every Q fail! I’ve actually heard him give veterans Q’s a harder time.

eHarmony was upfront and didn’t hear him complain at all. Must have saved that for when I was out of earshot. Last time I was at Conviction he was jumping to the top of the picnic tables during step-ups. Must be all the SSH we are so fond of in Union county. Congrats on the new job!
Crypto is great to have in the pax for a VQ. Just follows along, and keeps the eyerolls to a minimum while the Q announces the next set.
Was Bullwinkle present? He was not. Not to worry, he was scorned for his failure to show, as is the custom here.
Thanks for the chance to lead, it was a lot of fun. According to back half of Hair Bands “compliment” I will be better at it the next time around. I started in F3 in April 2017 and managed to avoid Qing for quite a while through some handy excuses.

2 Lefts don’t make a Right

7 PAX for a little tour de Matthews via BLIMPS.

Warm-up:

Quick but sufficient disclaimer, warning the PAX this was my first visit to Sparta.

The Thang:

Right hand turn onto Trade for a quick circle up of the following exercises:

5 x Burpees

10 x Lunges (each leg)

15 x Imperial Walkers

20 x Merkins

25 x Plank Jacks

30 x Squats

Midway through the Merkins, informed the PAX this was how to do BLIMPS, and we would do a full set of these at every right turn we took. Murmurs of making an extreme left turn to make a right were heard but don’t think this was attempted.

Left hand turns would be assigned bomb jacks x 10 (think squat into a star jack).

Here is the route we took:

Right on trade, left at the T, left on John, right on Trade, left on Charles, left on Crestdale, left on Matthews-Mint Hill, left on Trade, left down to the library, around the library roundabout stopping for 10 donkey kicks, left on trade, right to the parking lot by Seaboard, Right on Ames, right on park central, right on Trade, left into the AO parking lot.

4.6 miles, 7 rights and 8 lefts – those reps added up quickly!

Moleskin:

First time posting at Sparta, as Thursday’s are reserved for 0.0 and Meathead. I was going to post at least once to get a lay of the land before my Q, but for some reason chose to prerun Meathead a few weeks back and rolled my ankle putting me out of commission. Lesson learned Voodoo/High Tide.

The possibilities at this AO are ridiculous. Being an hour long workout and close to the greenway, downtown Matthews, sportsplex, etc. there are endless opportunities to give a good beat down. The usual suspects at Sparta only complete the 2nd F as it was a standout crew, with encouraging and entertaining mumble chatter for 60 straight mins. I will definitely be back.

Thanks to Slim for the takeout and to Gypsy and Madison for the opportunity to lead this fine group.

Don’t Skip Dinner, Skip Rope.

6 pax mustered at the still shovelflagless AO.  YHC was LIFO #qfail

Nevertheless, we launched for another version of Hawk’s Nest into much less rain than anticipated, so that’s a positive.

Below is a bit of what we did but more-so just some random commentary.

Moleskine & a bit of the Thang

So we ran from pavilion to pavilion and did some work at each, starting with COP.  3 pavilions, but there’s likely more on the Hawk’s Nest expanse.  We’ll count later.

COP consisted of the usual with the exception of the back-scratcher…not sure that’s what it’s called and almost certain we didn’t do it correctly.  #qfail

No weinke to speak of, and that was obvious from the get-go.  The pax were gracious…YHC deserved some serious mumble chatter.

So we then ran to another pavilion, and 5 of us did called exercise while #6 jumped roped and acted as the “timer” (50 reps, 75 jumps or 100 jumps).  Then we’d rotate, different called exercise, different jump roper.  Sprockets apparently was the Oklahoma state jump rope champ and the pride of Tulsa County.

Anyway, we ran to another pavilion and did some people’s chair, overhead press and BsTW.

No more pavilion hopping – we were out & about the rest of the morning.  Next stop before the bridge.  grab a rock. do called exercise while jump-roper serves as the timer.

Jog to other side of football field, lunge walk up long ramp to building, plankorama and then some more work on the walls with jump-rope timer again.

That was that.  Back to launch lot for COT with the Fast Twitchers.  7 of them…damn…they had more.  I mean glad they had 7 pax for Purell’s Q.

Sundry observations:

Spackler did not post.  He predicted as much on Twitter the night before.  Gloss also declined ahead of time publicly.

Certain we did not set a record for lowest mileage at a bootcamp for Area51 as I know some Q’s have circled up at the get-go from the launch lot and stayed there for the full 45 minutes.  But no idea how far we went for 2 reasons: 1) I never track distance when I Q nor when I don’t Q and 2) YHC lost his Garmin.  Thanks to HIPAA for ably filling Mermaid’s shoes in keeping the Q apprised of the time.  Difference being, HIPAA did it upon request while Mermaid’s is unsolicited.

Great to see Beaver out and doesn’t appear to be showing any ill effects from the broken hip…though YHC was a little concerned watching your dismount from the BsTW.

Thumper is on Q next week, and confident he’ll have a much more well-designed Weinke.

Thin Mint was scheduled Q but pulled up lame, re-aggravating a couple injuries during the 15+ mile Vagabond on Saturday.  Can’t imagine how 15+ miles and tons of bootcamp work would do that?  Get well, brother.  Rest.  Thin Mint back on the Hawk’s Nest schedule for 1Q of 2019.

Snowflake was WD…of course but the man is a machine.  If I’m still even able to jog or do some merkins when I’m 56 (or is it 57?) – I’ll be thankful.

Speaking of thanks….are you grateful?  For what?  To Whom?  If you give thanks, there has to be an object and subject of your thanks.

Elie Wiesel, prolific author and Holocaust survivor of both Auschwitz and Buchenwald said this about gratitude: “When a person doesn’t have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity.”

I’m thankful for you knuckleheads.  This life would be exceedingly more difficult without you.

Don’t wait until next Thursday to make a list of what you’re thankful for and then give thanks to whomever is the object of your thanks.  Aye?!

They say it’s your birthday…(VQ)

We decided to celebrate Orange Whip’s Birthday this morning with a 36 special since this was his last workout at 35. We rarely go 36 reps on anything and it really took the wind out of some of us, and we heard it definitely take the wind out of one of us…

In my first Q I managed to keep us under shelter when the rain stopped and out running while it was raining. Fortunately, these men are plenty comfortable in the gloom.

I’ll go ahead and quit now before I make myself sick… again.

10 men braved the dicey weather, and I was grateful for their encouragement and perseverance in my VQ. Thanks to all, plus we got to see the Wild Hog that Cottontail shot on his land. The thing had real tusks and everything.

Thanks to Cottontail who took us out, and also for the reminder that the Bible Study happens at Panera at Arboretum post workout, so get on it.

Benny’s Triumphant Return Q: Bon Voyage Base Camp

23 pax made the smart decision to start there day off at Base Camp for YHC first Q in exactly 9 months and last as a Base Camp Site Q. After a veteran approve disclaimer was given which included modify for injury not discomfort it was warned today would not be a moderate workout. After a couple warm up laps around the track where we picked up 1 pax coming in hot on 4 wheels the beatdown commenced.

10 count

Afterwards, 2 lines of tunnel of love where YHC being the proper leader started a line but the pax didn’t see that so naturally had to join a different line and led it off. Mumblechatter

Jack Webb: It wouldn’t be a proper Q without one of my favorite things Jack Webb 1 slow Merkin followed by 4 Air presses.
1 Merkin 4 Air presses
2 Merkins 8 Air presses
3 Merkins 12 Air presses
4 Merkins 16 Air presses
5 Merkins 20 Air presses
4 Merkins 16 Air presses
3 Merkins 13 Air presses(this is where YHC lost count sad coming from a Math Teacher)
2 Merkins 8 Air presses
1 Merkin 4 Air presses

2 10 counts, Gummy being a veteran pulled a fast 10 count so naturally another one was given. Mosey on up back to the parking lot this time through the handicap ramp to avoid the stairs.

Mosey on back up to the parking lot, with lots of time left to spare YHC improvised to keep the pax occupied. Instructions were given to run 4 corners 20 LBCs at each corner while running AYG on the to the next corner.

Afterwards, an attempt of 1 long line of plankers delight was shot down and decided with this many pax that 2 lines would be a smarter move. Plank on down the line 2 hand slap merkins down the line.

With time to spare, a visit to Semi’s Office was in order

Followed by plankers delight.

Mary: Each pax was given the opportunity to pick a Mary exercise, they could go either Easy or Stupid with no limitations.

Tolkien: 5 Ninja Stars
Slim Fast: 5 Hand Released Merkins
Sensei: Flutter
Blades of Glory: American Hammer
Rock Thrill: The Dolly
Thunder Road: Protractor

Instructions were given by YHC to then end the last 2 minutes with AMRAP Burpees on your own, YHC ended the workout 30 seconds early given the strong work by the pax.

Moleskin:

First off, I want to say thank you for all of the pax who came out today. It’s been a tough road the past 9 months since the accident and surgery while working my way back up through Physical Therapy. All of the support since the accident has truly been inspirational on my journey back to full strength.

As expected, Purell, Purple Haze, joined by Tolkien coming off a strong NYC Marathon led the way most of the morning. We didn’t quite hit the 2 mile goal YHC wanted to make today however, what we lost in miles we gained in core work. Q nerves were definitely felt after not Qing in so long, complaints were heard that the pax were too old for Tunnel of Love. It’s good for you every now and then, if I can do it with a bionic leg then you can do it.

Tclaps to Slim Fast, Sensei and HIPPA for joining YHC on a pre run, the Slim Fast effect of we’re taking it easy this morning effect is still as always false. Needless to say it was good fellowship to start off the morning.

It’s been an honor to be part of the Base Camp Site Q trio with Thunder Road and Goonie. Unfortunately injuries and a new job made my stay as Base Camp site Q short. Tclaps to Drano who wasn’t present for asking me to step up for him around a year ago. Goonie and Thunder Road continue to lead a strong AO and I know they’ll continue to keep Base Camp strong.

-Benny

Thanks Slim Fast for the strong takeout today.

OCR Bone Frog – Got Mud?

6 pax (7 in spirit) came together and crushed the Bone Frog!  The morning started out great for Deadwood as he gained a near concussion stepping into Blue Screens car, the short compact jeep suits the pint sized beast but not taller pax. We took two wrong turns, heard some banjo music but finally made it to the race.

Warmup:

No warmup just some lite stretches.  We did see racers doing burpees and thought they were warming up but we were wrong…we would soon knock out 31 burpees of our own.

The Thang:

OCR with tons of mud, cold creeks, tons of muds, free beer and great fellowship.

Quotes from the Pax:

Blue Screen:

“I tried to view this Bone Frog  race in the life of my two testicles today. First they get packed by pressure into tight spandex pants that Made them look like a baby bird and two nest eggs that was run over by a steamroller. Thank goodness for outside shorts. And if it’s not bad enough running around in cold temperature with spandex? They are then involuntarily plunged into 18° rushing frigid stream water and quick frozen like two jolly Green Giant green peas. In fact at this point in the process…they’ve probably shriveled up to about that same size. ?

But then they go through the experience of being a beaten wife in an abusive relationship. Every crossing of the wall that’s climbed results in them getting squished like pancakes when the body propels itself from one side of the top of the walk to the other. I had to readjust them at one point today and it felt like I had two flat US currency silver quarters in my sack.

They made it through though. Not sure if they’ll work after this trauma for their original intent. Sadly get only 2-3 chances a year to see if they can work for the pleasure which they were intended for as part of married life – personal pocket pool.

Also, I think I figured out why I felt nauseous the second half of the race. First I thought it was Dana’s farts because I was behind him. But I realize that when we tried to get over those tires at the start of the race I did some bruising or damage to my abdominal section the three times I tried it. and I think it caught up to me at the end of the race. Danas farts actually smelled good towards the end of the race – better smelling than the cow crap/mud mixture all over my clothes.”

Blue Screen hung (figuratively) with all the young pax and scored 1st in his age group. His description of crossing the obstacles, especially the walls, was spot on.  Oh, and after the race the Respect drops us off and goes to the gym…really?

Halfback:

”“If you weren’t at The Bonefrog Run this morning you missed out!! From running in the mud to creeks, jumping over walls, swinging monkey bars, and climbing up ropes in rather chilly temperatures totaling a whopping 6+ miles for a casual Saturday workout. Next year, be there or be square!!”

He set the pace all day, nice job!

Sleeperhold:

”I ran a race, I got muddy…I finished. The End.” Buzz kill this guy.

Dana:

“Once Deadwood convinced me into upping from the Sprint 3k to the Challenge 10k it was time to head to the start. (Yes, I convinced him today) We all stood there watching 10 or so runners completing burpees. We all thought hey they are warming up. Then the race started and so did the slip-n-slide in the mud. While trying to stay out of the mud and crossing a stream we came to the first obstacle. I’m thinking to myself ok a bunch of tires on a pole how hard can this be? Looks can be decieving. After we all conquered that one we ran over a stream and up a hill to a fantastic place where we were given the ability to do 18 dips, 31 burpees, and 7 pull ups. We then ran down some more obstacles ran did some more obstacles. Then we got to the stream. No way around it we had to wade through knee high water for about 100 yards. But hey our shoes were clean. By this point we were about 1.5 miles in. One of the vertical walls to climb over the first or second one some ways down the course I think my balls were pinched off. Then ran some more, did some more obstacles. All obstocales were attempted and most were conquered.

Then we got to the last obstacle 4.75 miles later. Never ending monkey bars hanging about 20’ in the air with a net under. Banjo started, got most of the way across and went down. I started,  got a ways across and went down. After rolling around on the net I made my way to the other end and proceeded down then a jog to the finish line. Banjo looked at me as my back was in full spasm and said i heard a crack when you hit the net. Yep that was my lower back saying what did you get me into.

All in all ot was a great time. I learned some things about myself and the other Pax in the process. I am glad DW and Banjo pushed me to sign up. At that time I could not run a 1/2 mile more or less 6, glad I did it with this group of guys. We started together and finished together.

This was a great time and we will get more Pax for Bonefrog October 19, 2019, yep my birthday

Banjo:

”My balls got pinched on obstacles 15-28. They hurt really bad until I fell in the creek around mile 4, then they went numb. The beer afterwards helped with the pain but next year a jock strap will be utilized.“

Deadwood:

“I had a blast but the rain the day before made the entire course a slippery mess that was nearly impossible to run. Some of the walls were 8’ high and we managed to scale them. Blue Screen, being slightly vertically challenged, required a boost on some of the obstacles. On one wall we gave him an assist that nearly killed him.  Either myself and Sleeperhold or Banjo boosted him up at the same time and basically tossed him over the wall…luckily he caught the wall and landed.  Close call!

The Pax really pushes today.

Dana, thinking he could barely handle the 3miler, crushed the 6.5 miler and almost all the obstacles.

Banjo took a nice knock on the kneee and finished the race bloody.

Blue Screen was a beast but the tall obstacles gave him some trouble.

Halfback breezed through the race and led most of the day… Mad Dog, you have a good son in law, he’s a solid dude!

Sleephold scolded me a few times for not circling back on obstacles to help pax over. Those incidents happened only because the breath was taken from my body thanks to the walls crushing my balls. All other obstacles I made sure to assist.

Thanks for going guys, it was a fun day!

We and Bobby McGee

13 ventured out and 14 ventured back.  Ocho Cinco led a well rounded beatdown that left everyone gassed and hungry for Coffeeteria.  Arms and legs will be sore tomorrow, especially thighs.  40 minutes in McGee showed up out of nowhere, having run around all of the greater Blakeney area looking for the pax, except for where we were (right smack in the middle of the shopping center parking lot).  Right after he showed U2 “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” played, appropriately.

Paton Pending (on the DL)  showed for Coffeeteria, and Bevo stopped through to say hi too.

Great morning, Q, beatdown, and Coffeeteria.  Mighty Mite stayed around awaiting Vagabond group.
