Thirsty Thursday at Hydra

Thirsty Thursday at Hydra

  • LaZboy, Gummy, Cotton Mouth, Harley, Jet Fuel, Sprockets, Leprechaun, Hannibal, Queen, Marge, Kirk, Pudding Pop, Bug Eater, Clover, Lewinsky, Tackling Dummy

‘Marge’ showed excellent leadership in volunteering me for the Q on delightful ‘dry’ Thursday AM- one problem…I wasn’t in the know – I was not on the email that notified me of my Q responsibility. Thanks to Gummy for watching my “six” and a light travel week gave me the opportunity to lead a great group of guys at one of my favorite workout spots. The Hydra clan missed some of the old timers and regular attendees like Hopper, Hops, Spackler, and Purple Haze. Cottonmouth came out to support a friend even though he had been taking care of sick family all week.

This was a rusty Q for this old guy… like my short game, the exercise intro and cadence is the first to go and was immediately targeted by the PAX as woefully deficient. I do think, despite my amateur Q status the Pax got their money’s worth and burned enough calories to warrant a few beers for the big time ACC basketball matchups to be played that evening. I was in my a zone… But there was plenty of mumble chatter to go around during the work out and Gummy provided plenty of hazards/warnings and clarifications to the workout regiment while running to and from Harris Teeter. Pudding Pop always provides irritable bowel symptoms and smells to spice things up…Jet Fuel (fellow Tar Heel) and I got to discuss our basketball hopes for the evening. Thanks Marge and my email is bcrottsaia@gmail.com for the next Q!!! 🙂

Warm up

  • Burpee 1x X 5 on Q command
  • Return to AO (Old Providence) “AYOP” with 5x squats at every 2nd street light- collect PAX at launch- more time left than expected so the Q implemented his back up plan. .06 miles earned
  • pax jogs around the rear of school to the bus parking lot and to the contemplative “tree” with benches- PAX completes – Durkin’s 10X, Dips 10x, and decline Merkins 10x – jogs back same route to achieve 3 TOTAL MILES.
  • COT/cool down – Flutter 10x/ Dolly 10x- good for 10 count
  • Burpee 1X OYO
  • Huddle – ‘Sprockets’ did a great job closing out the Pax in prayer.

Chatter Head Kotters Party

Wow, where to start. Well, let’s start in the corner some people would call, “TMI”. I had a very active dump this morning. Probably wouldn’t fall into the category of “seat belt on toilet” or anything, but a really good full body release. Hmm, what would be the cause of this? Probably the many Dos Equis (plural?) I had watching the Heels dispatch Louisville (fake ACC), and then stayed up for Zion’s eighth dunk in the first six minutes, and hit the sack. Random thought #1, why Dos Equis? I’ve been watching Bloodline on Netflix, and it seems that they are drinking Mexican beer in every scene. They got me hook, line, and sinker…good marketing.

Why am I telling you this? Well, the primary and secondary defecation (in the same sitting) caused me not to leave the casa untilt 5:17, which puts me coming in hot on two wheels at Covenant Day. Day prior I had called out for all chatter heads to come on out for a standard Fun Friday at Kevlar. Upon dismounting the vehicle in time for the disclaimer, some of Area 51’s finest were in attendance. Heck, even Tiger Rag and Young Love dusted off the crusty F3 shoes to post this morning, more on this later. I knew from the start we were all in for a very special one this morning.

Mosey from lot, pick up a late arriving Joker and head down to the courtyard in between a bunch of buildings.

Chatter Time

My goodness, the chatter was amazing this morning. If you weren’t there, you wouldn’t understand.

Sucks that we really had two groups of chatter the whole time, but that’s the way the cookie crumbled. Guess we could’ve done a Bulldog Bro Gym workout, but I’m too lazy for the setup that has to happen for that (and remember how long my dump took?).

Anyways, things started during COP when, at the end of an exercise, Horsehead asked me if I had my shorts on backwards. Umm, yes, I had to look, and no, for the record, I had it right.

On our first run (group 1), Alf and Joker were lamenting about their Hokies getting Criminoled yesterday. You always need an active dude on the inbounds play on defense, they deserved what they got IMO. Right before round 2 was called, Cage shot himself out of a cannon, almost like he knew what I was thinking. #strange Right about now Joker was asking if there was a porta-potty around, or anything of the like. I can attest (from my Defcon1 episode here about a month ago) that, in fact, no, no there isn’t. Just stop and hold. He seemed to have worked it out internally (I don’t have that power) as he and Rhapsody were leading most of the way. Most of Group 1 was doing zero of the exercises.

Upon arriving to the second loop site, Spackler decided to defect from Group 1 to Group 2, as he thought he could definitely finish first in every run. #vetmove

Bulldog and Manziel got into a little race back to the rock pile. We all know Bulldog’s capabilities, but Manziel has some wheels! Uphill no less. And, they are both Tottenham Hotspur fans. #cute

Great to see TR and Young Love back in the fold. TR let us know after ball o’ man that “go ahead and get your jabs in now, before too long, you’ll know who your daddy is”. Yes fellas, the OG A51 Nantan is back. Young Love has been spending time gallivanting the US, looking for a wider client base. Who knew attorneys go on sales calls? I didn’t. Go forth and prosper young (love) man.

I’m sure there was a lot of chatter in Group 2, please inform us in the comments. Like Gummy for example, he and I were partners, and I’m sure the he talked a little, probably about nothing, which I always love.

Differences in GPS devices had us anywhere between 2.75 and 3.13 mileage today. BLC commented to me afterwards, “dang Puddin Pop, wasn’t expecting you to run that much, dude!” All good in the hood. Speaking of…Random thought #2…satellite radio selection sucked when I was on two wheels heading to CD, but heard Let Me Ride by Dr. Dre on the way home. Top 10 hip hop song for me of all time, so good on so many levels. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Thanks to Bulldog for taking us out in prayer this morning.

Et tu HIPAA? YHC’s First Year of F3: A Story Told in Interpretive Dance and Burpees

Moleskin:

One year ago today I began this F3 thing in the school parking lot at Olde Providence Elementary. It was 34 degrees, wet, and I wore a full winter coat. For reference, here is what we did that day:

March 15, 2018 – https://f3southcharlotte.com/2018/03/15/hair-of-the-dog-2/

I tried to accurately recreate that workout at Centurion this morning (with some adaptations and creative license for the different AOs). For reference, the italics is stuff I added. Everything else was verbatim from last year.

There was a lot of pre-Post online mumblechatter on The Twitters and The Slackmachine. I had to stay up late last night studying for the “test” Chelms claimed to have waiting for me. I was hoping for a decoder ring or maybe a nice lamp instead.

I felt like I simply had to include some man-to-man contact (ONIONS!) in honor of March Madness with the partner carries.

The Pax today absolutely crushed it. To be honest, they chewed through my entire Weinke with a few minutes to spare. Did not think that was going to happen at all. #AmateurMove. I owe you guys a couple of minutes’ worth of #refund. Pro rated I think that is $0.00. Nice work, gentlemen (I use that term loosely).

Pax Notes/Tribute:

I was absolutely blown away by HIPAA (Gastonia) being there. Total surprise out of the blue and completely unexpected. Not a short commute, from the GasHouse either. And lest there be any confusion, he was HIPAA first (by a few days). I move for some disambiguation – HIPAA vs. HIPPA. I’ll take the misspelling. How do we get that approved.

Maybe (F3 Metro) – Forever indebted to you for dragging me out to my first workout. I think you only had to ask 3 or 10 times. #tclaps

Hopper – My nickname is your fault. I think of you every time I hear A Boy Named Sue. Thank you.

Hops and Pudding Pop – You were two of the first people who welcomed me to the fold. Wil never forget that. From the first few minutes, I was welcomed with open arms.

Thanks to Mermaid for the tough love and some choice tips at my first Q last year. Nuanced, veteran nuggets like “HIPAA. Did you even read the Q instructions on the website? Have you ever counted before? It goes like this….”

Clover informed me that this workout set a record for most calories burned according to his Tim Apple Watch. Thank you for making the trip down (several times a week!) from Dilworth/South End/Greater Myers Park Metropolitan Area to post with us down in Area 51!

Ickey was sneaky fast on the sprints. You kind of expect Lorax and Mermaid and Brileaux to be up there, but saw Ickey and imagined this was running through his mind.

Champagne was still sore from Wednesday, but somehow still made it out today.

Finally, I wanted to thank all of the men of F3 who have been part of my life for the past year. It’s amazing what a difference a year makes. From Day One, I couldn’t get enough and haven’t looked back. You’ve got a great thing going here and I can’t wait to see what the next year holds.

All About the Briarcrest, Baby.

I really shouldn’t be the one writing this backblast today. The master orators that are Fuse Box or Zinfandel should be as they were the main guys behind the new neighborhood & F3 approved large lot shirts and magical entrance we all witnessed this morning. They would write 6 paragraphs breaking down the who, what where when and why of today’s events. They would do their best to shame all other local neighborhoods for their puny showings today, with graphs and charts of calculations/ratios. Instead, they will likely meme you to death today on Group Me.

Briarcrest had it’s Spartacus moment, and unfortunately every single one of the Waxhaw PAX could not be there to witness it.  The Respects present all instantly became 20 years older and shook their fists in disgust, yelling “those dang kids”. Millbridge stood with envy, wondering why with 1000 homes that couldn’t be them.  The rest were just confused embarrassed for them.  But nobody from the B&C seemed to care about yesterday, or the day before that, the times when factsacking jokes about Briarcrest were commonplace. All that matters is today. So yes, one small neighborhood in Waxhaw/Wesley Chapel (not Mineral Springs, Moneyball) brought out all of their people and comprised 10 of the 26 total PAX, all excited to see temps in the 60’s and eager to work hard. Shampoodle (kotters) even flew back from Nashville to witness this glorious occasion. Even FNG Brandon, now named Glider because we had nothing left to give at that point ( he rode a glider once?), was taken aback from all the excitement. If he never shows up again, it would be due to the shenanigans today and obviously have nothing to do with YHC’s spectacular workout, described below for anybody that cares.

Since I wasn’t sure how many were going to be present (YHC has been missing some Impromptu workouts lately), my plan was pretty much to do what I prefer to do, which is run. The Weinke would be updated as we go, as usual. Disclaimer was provided over the strong mumblechatter.

Warm Up: Mosey through the parking lot Plank, MC x 15 IC , Merkins x10 IC, Plank jacks x 15 IC, Merkins x10 IC, Peter Parkers x 15 IC, Merkins x 10 IC (for some, most stopped counting at this point)

The Thang: Mosey to the path that leads to Transporter’s Home Away from Home. At each light, complete 3 burpees. Total 21. Plank work while waiting for the six.

Continue mosey to the end of the path. Partner up.

Uphill both ways-Partner 1 run to the top of stairs, 10 merkins, P2 to end of path and around circle, 10 merkins-When you meet, 4 burpees. Flapjack. Each time you meet, add another 4 burpees up to 16 total. Mary while waiting for the 6.

Mosey to alcove in side of HS- Plank work, Merkins x10IC, 6 inch plank jacks x 10IC 150 shoulder taps off wall combined as a team. P1 runs to other side of the street and back while P2 does the exercise. Mary while waiting for the 6.

Mosey to front of HS-10 burpees OYO

Mosey to back of Middle school- Derkins x 20 IC, Dips x 20 IC, 20 Step ups Derkins x 10 IC, Dips x 10 IC Mosey back to start

Moleskin: The Pax all brought it today. I think. I usually have a terrible habit of not noticing or paying attention to much around me But since nobody got in their jeep and drove off early, I’d say that sticking around is good enough for me. The goal as always was to keep the heart rate up the entire time and offer little to no rest in between exercises and while waiting for the six. And obviously do enough merkins and burpees to keep everyone honest. Saw many knees hit the ground on the derkins/shoulder taps, myself included, never an issue as long as all are doing the best they can. Despite the brisk movement, the mumblechatter remained strong today and those that know who they are never stopped talking the entire workout (it seemed to be a Briarcrest against the other PAX kind of thing)

To those who care, we logged a little over 2.7 miles. Not overly far, but we were constantly moving with a very fast Mosey (some would say run) throughout. Thanks to all who showed up today to make my 2.86 year anniversary Q Briarcrest’s shining moment a good one.  Lawson, we are all now waiting..

But I purchased sunflower seeds here once…

I arrived at #87 early to drop a few cones along N Providence St…little did I know one pax would drop the kids off at the pool and ruin a local store owners morning, not to mention his shi%*@&. My Q’s are pretty predictable, low reps/high run, but today I wanted to change it up. Informed that an FNG would be amongst us I decided to scale the running back while making the exercises a bit harder. With my track record, I knew the B & C presence would probably not exist. Banjo is on IR after being owned by a kid playing ultimate frisbee and Zin was on hiatus at a weak AO in ATL. Thank you, no modifiers today…but wait!

A large black truck rolled in and I knew it must be spring and hibernation was over, Dancing Bear in the house!! But will he smell pee during the merkins? Will he break the B and C stereotypes (it’s not a stereotype, its fact) and not modify? Can he give it 110%, not complain and get stronger? Hell yeah he can and he did!! Way to crush it DB!!

The Moleskine:

I have to say for an FNG Yeah Yeah killed it! He hung right in there with the running and I didn’t see him modify (I don’t police), nice work and welcome aboard!

Bottle Cap as usual crushed the work but Keith Jong Hill slowed the gazelle a bit. It did seem steeper today.

Easy Button and Moneyball talked about basketball or something as they moseyed behind me a while but pulled a $&@? And bolted by me in the last hill run…ummmhumm

It was good so see Deflated’s face although he was still bundled strong with it 53 outside! He’s an old soul and always cold. I’m sure when Foundation and himself car pull the heat is on blast! Do you have AC in your car..asking for a friend?

Foundation, hard worker as usual and a master fng namer!

Trogan is looking strong! The consistent posting, positive attitude and max effort is paying off. Well done!

As I am running up the KJH for the last time Damascus catches up with me and all I hear him saying is a weak raspy half dead voice is “I need carbs, I need carbs, I need carbs” haha.

Shake n Bake glad you could join us, strong showing as per norm. Get out here more and those burpees wont roast your Boston as bad! Nice work!

Last but not least lets discuss the incident that went down at Marathon Gas station on this fine morning and left one store owner wondering what he did to deserve such rancid smells in his establishment from a non-paying customer.

MB turned to me with a look of desperation, pain, and energy and said (very fast) where you going next?????? ha. I said we are grabbing wall on the way to KJH…Boom he was out! Like missing.

We are arriving at the wall and I see his running posture doesn’t look at painful as he is coming from the laundry mat. He then goes on to tell us that the store owner “shouldn’t go in there for 30-45 mins” and “someone needs to open a window”. The relived pax felt bad momentarily for not making a purchase after his deposit but then realized that he had previously purchased a (1) pack of sunflower seeds from the poor man months ago. I suppose a $1.89 pack of sunflower seeds give you the green light to do the work.

Well done men..no 6 today!!

Good morning at the Peak

Editor’s Note: Lois posting on behalf of Sensei

8 smart dudes took advantage of the cool-ish weather this morning and posted at Peak 51. It is March, so at best we have a few more weeks before the temps and/or humidity starts to rise. No FNGs, so the standard disclaimer was given and we took off and did the following …

Mosey around the front of FBC to the side parking lot.

  • SSH x 20
  • Hillbillies x 20
  • Merkins x 10
  • LSS x 20
  • Forward arm circles x 10
  • Backward arm circles x 10

Gather at the bottom of the church parking lot and partner up. P1 runs suicides to the other end of the lot, while P2 does called exercise.

  • Round 1 – LBCs
  • Round 2 – CDDs
  • Round 3 – Flutters
  • Round 4 – Lunges

Mosey 20 feet or so to the bottom of the paved hill behind the church for counting exercises:

11s on the hill, Merkins at bottom and Squats at top

Everybody on their 6 for Mary!

  • Dolly x 20
  • V-Ups x 10
  • Freddie Mercury x 20

Longer mosey to the wall for some PC — 2 rounds, 50 air presses each

Mosey over to the bus parking lot for some AYG sprints … we got in 4 total

Head back to launch and time.

Moleskin and Observations:

  • This was a fantastic morning. Perfect shorts and t-shirt weather without stupid humidity.
  • Great to see Beaver at Peak. Come back anytime.
  • The chatter during Hillbillies is always worth the price of admission.
  • Apparently Slim Fast does not like, or approve of CDDs. Something to do with naming rights and how they have nothing to do with actual dry docks.
  • The 20 feet mosey offended Tweetsie, duly noted sir.
  • V-Ups were as awful as expected, and candy bars / cookies are not a good pre-workout meal when V-Ups are on the agenda. I didn’t catch who offered that advice, but I do concur.
  • Everybody always loves sprints at the end of the workout, so you are welcome.

That’s it, as always it is an honor to lead the good folks at Peak 51.

Tweetsie with the strong takeout.

Tried and True

9 pax joined YHC on a cool March morning for some kettlebell action. My legs were sore for about 5 days after Alf’s deadlift-fest last week, so I decided to go a little lighter on the legs. 3 for the pre-run (YHC, Chin Music, and Header) – they ran at their 2nd F pace for me.

After a thorough disclaimer, we began thusly:

  • SSH x 20 IC
  • Swings x 20 OYO
  • Merkins x 10 IC
  • Swings x 20 OYO
  • Prying squats x 3
  • Swings x 20 OYO
  • Halos x 5 (each way)
  • Swings x 20 OYO

On to the Main Event, beginning with 5 reps per side of each of the following exercises. Complete all exercises for the left side, then move to the right:

  • 1H swings
  • Cleans
  • Snatches
  • Racked reverse lunge
  • Lawnmower
  • Carry something (sandbag, 32kg bell, 28kg bell, 24kg bell, 2x 16kg bells, or your own bell) to the far curb and back.

Repeato for a total of 3 rounds

Next up is a little set I found online called 9 Minutes of Hell (#soundseasy). I broke out the #Fembot and we got moving:

  • :30 per side of swings
  • :30 per side of cleans
  • :30 per side of snathces
  • :30 per side of presses
  • :30 per side of reverse lunges
  • :30 per side of single leg deadlifts
  • 1:00 of swing burpees (merkin + swing instead of jump)
  • 1:00 plank (:30 on hands, :30 on elbows)
  • :30 per side of thrusters from the racked position

Although there was no rest built into the timer, the pax made time to catch their breath.

Grab a medium size bell and head to the playground for 3 rounds of:

  • 5 goblet squats
  • 5 presses per side

COT: Thanks to Header for the takeout

Announcements: Meathead Q2 Q schedule release date coming soon. Keep an eye on your inbox and let me know if you need a switch or substi-Q.

Naked blister moleskine:

  • Thanks to the pax for posting and pushing through the workout. YHC is pretty smoked and could use a nap. Horsehead finally came to his sensese and came back to us after he left us for that other Thursday workout for a while #kotters. Cooter 2 also joined us, coming off of IR. We hope you keep coming back! Young Love is on a strong Meathead posting streak – keep it up!
  • Thanks to Header and Chin Music for the push on the pre-run. T-claps for the coaching and mentorship of the 2.0s that you do.
  • It had been a while since we listened to the Fembot. I might need to change up the accent a bit next time so that Horsehead doesn’t just think it’s Siri talking. The Fembot and Spotify didn’t get along too well, causing some volume issues, but we worked through it (and it allowed me to grab a rest during the 9MOH).
  • While I know Tiger Rag has returned to F3 and is one of the fathers of the kettlebell in Area 51, he hasn’t posted at Meathead yet. Let’s see what happens when I put him down to Q…

Happy Birthday to YHC! Hope you like bricks.

Launch Conditions: 39-ish degrees (Some disagreement on this point. Spackler informed us that he had to ditch WeatherBug when it caused a foot of snow one time, so now he relies on AccuWeather. I’m a Weather Underground guy, but I’m not convinced of its accuracy, either. Suffice to say that it was not freezing or raining or windy.)

Pax: HIPAA (QIC), Spackler, Scabby, Prohibition, Puddin Pop, Champagne, Mermaid, Brilleaux, Clover, Moana, Snowflake, Jet Fuel, Lorax

Mileage: 1.83 miles

Difficulty: Hugh Glass on the Herman-Willink Scale. Just short of a full Jocko due to relatively low distance.

9 - Hugh Glass

Strava:

After the birthday confetti and streamers had been cleared from the dance floor, all that remained was 13 Pax who were full of swoleness and comradery (but still hungry for cake). More on that later.

The Thang:

Warmup saunter

Oh, what’s that? Someone has thoughtfully arrangement a crapton of brick pavers near Ye Olde Rock Pile? Grab a coupon.

Saunter back to launch.

COP

SSHx40
IW x 20
LSS x 20
Merkins x 20
Mountain Climbers x 20

Mosey to tree-lined Avenue.

World’s Worst Merkins (w coupons) — 10 trees x 2 reps tree.

Plank for 6.

Heading Back = 5 trees x 2 WWM’s each..

Hang a Ricky. Partner one does lunge walk-press to other side while partner 2 does curls. Partner 2 launches when partner 1 reaches end.

Hang another Ricky. Partner one bear crawls to end while partner 2 squats. Partner 2 launches when partner 1 reaches end.

Run it back.

Finish out the WWM set with final 5 trees.

Mosey back in general direction of launch.

Catch me if you can. Give all coupons to one partner. Second partner does 5 burpees and then tries to catch Partner One. When, caught, 5 burpees and flapjack.

Mary

Moleskin:

Thank you to everyone who joined for my 40th birthday extravaganza and thank you to Lorax and Brushback (in absentia, but with us in spirit) for the opportunity to lead these fine men.

The inspiration for the workout was kind of juvenile. Thought process went like this: 40 years old → 40’s → Birthdays Past → Edward 40 Hands → Bricks → Edward Coupon Hands. The concept, if unfamiliar, is as follows. Edward Fortyhands involves duct-taping a 40oz beverage to each of your hands and you can’t remove until finished. This is a real thing because Wikipedia and Youtube. I don’t recommend anyone do this ever. Googling this also yields some interesting results. Like this guy (NOT a Pax):

So basically we had coupons in our hands the whole time. Fun.

A Fishing Hole-like sub-2 miles today, but made up for it in max swole/pump. World’s Worst Merkins aka Worst Merkin Ever is really tough.

Worst Merkin Ever 1 Wide Arm Merkin, 1 Regular Merkin, 1 Diamond Merkin performed in succession with no break in form = 1 Worst Merkin Ever.

Prohibition and Mermaid sniffed out the Strava art attempt fairly early. Let’s just say it was not a good attempt. It was “s’posed ta” look like “4 0” but instead it kind of just looks like a twisted stethoscope.

Some of the vertan Pax turn the coupon bear crawls into hairburners. #innovation

Spackler is faster than I thought. Made the mistake of partnering with him on CMIYC and almost didn’t catch him. I think he slowed down for me a little.

#kotters to Champagne who has been on the shelf with some sickness/general crud the last month or so. Good to have you out and hope it was worth your time!

Fitting that we had 13 Pax on the 13th. Also was my number in sports growing up. #NoCoincidences

Thank you to Clover for the kind words about YHC. I owe you a few beers for that. Also, it was Clover’s Mom’s 72nd Bday and would have been his grandmother’s 102nd Bday.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of the HIMs, PAXs, QICs and men of F3 for the past year. Friday is my one year anniversary of my first post and I have never looked back. More on that on Friday. Every day I am grateful for the support, fellowship and common bonds I’ve formed with you guys. I am always amazed (yet never surprised) at the encouragement and support (and accountability!) everyone provides to their brothers. Here’s to 40 more!
