Fast Twitch: Are you #Dead2Haze?

Top vote getter in how to get “Dead2Haze”: Post at a rival Tuesday workout. I did, and I am, and 2 days later was asked to Q Fast Twitch…one week later. So… if you’re dying to Q Fast Twitch and haven’t gotten the nod from our fearless site Q’s, head south of 51 to SOB-Land next Tuesday and you’ll get the call.

We’re steering clear of hills tomorrow for the most part. We will not be on the track. Your hands will touch the ground a few times. We will be running, fast. Check yourself tonight. Come tomorrow ready to run hard. If you’re chatty during the workout, you’re cheating yourself out of getting better (seriously).

If that last sentence ruffled your tailfeathers and you’ve got something to say about it, bring your best tomorrow. After Kevlar on Friday, my skin couldn’t be thicker.

Looking forward to a lovely meeting with you fine gentlemen.

SCMS 0515 be there

Weird Russian Singers

A raucous crowd of 31 descended on undoubtedly, the liveliest Friday workout in Area 51. Per usual, some came for the workout, some came for the show. Sifting through the fog of a 4:something AM jarring iPhone alarm, the thought crossed the minds of the greater south Mecklenburg: Can a “runner” actually “lead” a “bootcamp” workout? Great question. Glad you asked. I got no fewer than 4 texts last night: “What are we doing tomorrow?”, “Will we run a lot?”, “If I’m a [radio edit], should I really post at Kevlar?” Everyone showed up. Strong.

Here’s how it shook out:

10 burpees OYO –

 • Pax: “wait a minute, burpees? When’s the last time this dude’s hands touched the ground? You have GOT to be kidding me.”
 • HB: ” Yeah, burpees. Shut up, Haze.”

Mosey to the church lot. SSH x 25 IC, Imperial hip stretchers x 20 IC, Carolina dry DOGS x 20 IC, Peter “Petey Pablo” Parkers x 20IC

Here’s where it got weird(er).

10 bear squats

 • Pax: “demo please”
 • HB: <demos a bear squat> ” yes, it looks like humping. take a picture”

Broad jumps across parking spaces to the each median. Repeato 10 bear humps at each median. We did hit 4 or so medians.

Get in groups of 3, or just do whatever you want, Tiger Rag.

Here’s where it got even weirder.

Partner 1 rests his feet on partner 2’s shoulders, whilst holding plank position. Partner 2 then overhead presses partner 1’s legs. Gotta be some lame name for these – look it up. Bonus: partner 2 options facing towards or away from Partner 1. Only one group chose the forward facing option. It was so weird.

Meannnnnwhile, partner 3 runs a half loop around the median, back to P1 and P2 and takes one of their place. We did +/- 2 sets of these each.

Next: Forward-facing partner carries

Mosey to the end of the parking lot. Suicides back around the horseshoe. Some guys were giving it their all, and some guys were really sandbagging it out there. The mediocre effort was noted and quite embarrassing. To the guys working hard a big TCLAPS.

We circled up for some Mary somewhere between the church and the main entrance.

We yogged around the building to the patio and did some more partner circuit work – dips, merks, and a hustle around the lot.

Probably the only “running” we did was the triple Indian run back around the lot to the school.

We wrapped up with another 10 burps OYO and a set of J-Lo #Jennyonthablock

Moleskinny

All-star crew out there today. Q’ing Kevlar is like riding that bull in the rodeo. You know, the one that’s mean, big, and won’t hesitate to give you the ol’ roshambo if you let your guard down. You can’t win with this crew. The moment you get out of your whip, you’re sunk. Bulldog “threatened” a Q-jack less than 10 minutes in. The weird stuff carried on, and apparently I was still “leading”, proving his bark is worse than his bite #woof #dogpun.

Welcome to FNG Krusty – came out with Big Top (circus reference?). Dude is a Michigan native and was rocking the Big Blue tank top out of the gate. Anyone who posts in a tank their FNG post is grade-A in my book. Solid work out there today bro- look forward to seeing you out again.

Semi gloss was rockin’ a schmedium thunder road shirt. Not sure if he stole it from his wife, or what the story is. I’ll just leave it at that.

Swiper and Puddin pop were a real orchestra today. One was barritone and one was more soprano. You be the judge.

TR never stopped singing the song from a youtube video titled: “Weird Russian Singer”. Again, i’ll just leave that right here. The thumbnail image says it all.

Right at 2 miles today, gents. Hope you got what ya came for: a weird, weird 45 minutes of something.

Palmolive hands? Pish posh, Keith B. Angry, pish posh, indeed.

13 Humps

13 fellows got their mind right this morning at one of the humpiest hump-day AOs in Area 51. For a site that typically draws in the upper 20s in numbers, why so low this morning. Here’s my speculation:

“I’m ‘tapering’ for the BRR, bro”

“I got a VIP invite to the Lodge yesterday and had one too many Cold Mountain’s”

“We’ll probably just run the whole time. I remember the last time he Q’ed Death Valley”

“Chester and/or the Horsey gave me the business on Monday”

“School started this week, traffic on Pineville Matthews Rd at 5am is a nightmare. Wait, wasn’t there a crime scene over there a week ago? Sounds too risky.”

“I’m getting caught up on my DVR and was up too late last night. Bachelor in Paradise was too good to miss. Of course I watch it for the chicks though.”

Whatevs, bums. If you weren’t there here’s what you missed.

The thang-a-rang:

Cold start mosey out of the gate to Davie Park a.k.a. Benjamin Moore Park for COP

Merkins x 20 IC, SSH x 25 IC, Mountain Climbers x20 IC.

Pick two of your best buds and form a group of tres.

Gingerly cross 51 to the Windswept neighborhood.

Grinders to the left: Merkins x150 at the end of the culdesac, RDLs right leg x 100 at the start – complete as a team

Grinders to the right: Sumo squats x200ish at the end of the culdesac, RDLs left leg x 100 at the start.

We wrapped up the neighborhood tour with a set of suicides to the end of Windswept. Some token Mary was sprinkled in for giggles.

Mosey back to SCMS. Circle up at the end of the lot in plank position. One guy (or two, or 4) runs a loop around the cars and back to the circle. Errbody held plank til errbody ran a loop. THE END.

The Skinny:

Lotta limp commits yesterday about joining in for a prerun left Buttermaker and I alone for a nice peaceful jaunt through raintree for a few miles before the real deal. Smaller crew for DV was bringing the wood this morning.

The Eagles crew, ST and Dolly were leading the pack, per usual. It wasn’t even close.

Buttermaker’s handing over his baseball head coaching position this season, but still gets to wear the jockstrap and tight sliding pants as the assistant coach.

Gloss and TL were wearing the same shirt today. It was cute. Hadn’t been for the hole in Semi’s you couldn’t tell these guys apart.

Drano kept confusing Edward Scissor Hands and Sweeny Todd. The dudes almost got into a legit fight in the neighborhood until Floor Slapper got between them. Scary stuff.

Good connecting with Chin Music this morning. It was cool learning he played minor league ball with Sidd Finch a few years back. Word has it CM was the only guy that could hit off the monk. #chicksdigthelongball

Pop looked fly in his new running digs. Good thing RFYL wasn’t out there this AM – dude would have been beating the ladies back with sticks.

Strong efforts across the board this morning. Pleasure was all mine.

Hit the Lodge today for HDHH – starting at 4pm. Ball out.

Tour de Chester: Wilby Repeats

13 dudes didn’t make it to the Capt Jack statue this morning and headed for the sinister Sardis Forest hills. Twas a cooler morning, but that didn’t keep the shirts on – >50% went skins before leaving the gravel lot.

Here’s what you missed:

Launch from gravel lot. Left on Blue Ridge. Right on Mountainview around the dark loop, bear Right back onto Old Bell up to the Yucca plant. At the yucca we regrouped for instructions. Out: Head back down OB, Right on Wilby all the way past Chester’s crib, to Sardis. Back: Turn around at Sardis, back up Wilby to the Yucca. That’s one lap. AMRAP before 6:08. We met at the flagpole for the 2nd most patriotic Monday morning symbolism in Charlotte and cited the Pledge of Allegiance around the neon green flagpole. Jailbreak back to the parking lot.

Humble Observations:

 • Showing up early to the workout formerly-known-as-Muthaship has a few hidden perks. If the stars align and your radio is on 96.9 The Kat, and you’re facing the Duke building, when the clock strikes 0500, the Star Spangled Banner plays, and the Duke building lights up in a motion-LED American flag. No joke.
 • We passed Chester’s place a few times this morning. Each time, the anticipation grew. It was sketchy. Lap 1: Interior lights flick on. Lap 2: No visible observations outside, but the tinge of Pall Mall smoke tickled the nostrils on the run by. Lap 3: Don’t look left. Don’t look left! I looked left. He does exist. Nothing more to say about the experience. Lap 4: By now the sun’s high in the sky and daylight abounds, and like that, he’s gone.
 • Swiper, Tan-Fletch, and Beaker led the crew through the darkness. Tan-Fletch, coming off a week south-of-the-border (not the one in Dillon, SC) seemed to be riding Montezuma’s intestinal roller coaster. Far as I can tell, he survived.
 • Gloss and Bald-Hops (et. al) went “full Gloss” out of the gate. Strong.
 • Geraldo felt comfortable noting that from Horsey, the Lauren Conrad hill in 5 Knollz was “out of reach” and too far away. Challenge accepted, brother.
 • Solid crew out there this morning grinding on some long, steep, hills.

H/T to the Muthaship for it’s farewell voyage. Can rest easy knowing that spiral will always hold a little sweat/gas/emesis from a lot of us. As the saying goes: often imitated, never duplicated. RIP Mutha.

If your monday 0515 agenda now has a hole, Horsey McHorse is accepting new members. Half-off initiation fee through July 31st. See Tiger Rag for details.

HB out.

Horsey Preblast: Word to your Mutha

Rumblings of the Mutha closing has the regions in a panic and everyone doing Ballz’ marketing while he kicks back sippin’ on a Leinenkugel grapefruit shandy, or similar. If your travel agent didn’t get you on a flight to Cap’n Jack tomorrow, or you want a crack at the southland’s gnarliest hill, and possibly a sighting of some exhibitionist in his undies (or less), make yer way to the Sardis greenway lot (111 Old Bell Rd – corner of Old Bell/Sardis Rd) tomorrow at 0515 for the weekly installment of Horsey McHorse’s Arse.

Launch from Old Bell lot. Left on Blue Ridge. Right on Mountainview, bear Right back onto Old Bell up to the Yucca plant. Regroup.

Out: Head back down, Right on Wilby all the way to Sardis. Back: Turn around at Sardis, back up Wilby to the Yucca. That’s one lap. AMRAP.

Meet at the flagpole for the pledge at 6:08. Jailbreak back to the parking lot.

$0.30

Strong numbers at the Twitch this morning. Weather was good(ish), per usual, day-glo yellow was the color of choice today with a few dudes shedding layers along the way. Preblast went out yesterday so everyone a few guys knew what was on deck. Hill repeats on two of the tougher pitches around with a few lower-body focused exercises between.

The Thang:

Head south on Strawberry to the bottom of the Coburn half pipe.

Triple Nickel up west side of the pipe (direction heading towards Bevington). Top: Good Mornings/Bottom: deep squat

Continue towards 51 via Coburn/Cary Ridge. Regroup at 51 SSH x25IC.

Left on 51, Right on Clavemorr Glenn into WhiteGate. Weave your way to the base of Lauren Conrad.

Triple Nickel up the southern face of #LC (the steep side). Top: RDL left leg/Bottom: RDL right leg

Chaos and mutiny ensued with 3 minutes left. As the pack coasted into Strawberry following the return trip from #5Knollz, several guys veered towards the parking lot. Some half-hearted shouting and encouragement rallied the group for a quick AYG down Woodfox. Around a dump truck. Through traffic. Backwards.

Moleskinny:
World Record CRs?: Both hills hit Strava segments today, no CRs were observed. Gerber blistered up Coburn West on his final ascent for a solid 5th place finish, just shy of @Stumpy’s smokin’ 4:10/mi pace CR. @Honeybee’s CR on the #LaurenConrad was safe today too. @TL gave a strong effort, but fell a mere 22 seconds shy of the top spot on the 0.1mi segment.

Unbdoubtedly some heavy legs out there today for guys posting at the Horse yesterday. Strong work from top to bottom, lots of speed and endurance coming along early into BRR season.

Always enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to lead Tuesday’s signature workout.

Preblast: Fast Twitch Handsfree

Anarchy takes over Tuesday’s finest hour of power. As usual, you’ll know in advance what’s coming. Lace up your big boy sneaks, leave your shirt/tank top at home, and make the right choice tomorrow. Here’s what we’ll do:

Head south on Strawberry to the bottom of the Coburn half pipe.

Triple Nickel up west side of the pipe (direction heading towards Bevington). Top: Good Mornings/Bottom: deep squat

Continue towards 51 via Coburn/Cary Ridge. Regroup at 51.

Left on 51, Right on Clavemorr Glenn into WhiteGate (Google it, you’ll know where you’re headed). Weave your way to the base of Lauren Conrad.

Triple Nickel** up the southern face of #LC (the steep side). Top: RDL left leg/Bottom: RDL right leg

**Audible option: drop 1 or 2 legs of the triple nickel depending on how much time you need to head back to campus. 1.6 miles from the base of #LC. Plan accordingly.

AYG back to campus. 6.2ish mi if you complete the full deal.

Hilly Holey Socks

Moleskinny:

-Butter’s coaching his kid’s U6 allstar tourney this weekend. You could tell he was pumped. He showed up in the full coaches uniform. Cup, whistle, and all.

-DA came of the gate hot this morning with some fresh kicks. So hot he wore holes right through his socks. Hopefully he gets a new ‘purr or two for dad’s day tomorrow.

-Teddy said he was out of shape but still smoked er’boddy. Although he said he was really pissed his BRR teammate Radar was a no-show and would be “making some calls” this afternoon.

-Pulp Fiction crushed it. Dude never stopped quoting Sam Jackson all morning though. Didn’t mind it, but it was a little weird. #SayWhatAgain

-On the return route from Brechin, Bug and Mildew got lost. A search and rescue team went out looking for the guys. Word is they “missed a turn”

-In his true “I am 3rd” form, Spack attempted a flying EH on a dude walking through the neighborhood, only to get a scoffing “are you serious?!” in return. Dejected, he carried on, dominating his specialty – downhill running.

-Can’t remember if PH was wearing his busboy shoes today. He was moving though. Seemed in a hurry to get back to get a “good view spot by the pool”.

Stupendous effort today gentlemen. Glad to see the new site Qs haven’t run DZ into the ditch yet. Strong group as usual. Thanks for the opportunity to run around the neighborhood.

3rd Annual Day Zero Memorial Day Weekend Convergence

On May 25, 2013 Day Zero was born with 13 pioneers paying tribute to those that lost their lives protecting our freedom. Today, a shade over 3 years later, 42 men from all over A51 and SOB land rolled in to put in work.

At 0700 on the nose, following a mighty disclaimer, the 35+ A51 guys grabbed the shovel flags and took off for the soccer fields. Circling up and taking a knee around the flags a citation we read the Medal of Honor citation for USMC 1st Lt. William Dean Hawkins.

COP – Stars & Stripes

 • SSH x 50 IC
 • Low slow merkins x 13 IC
 • Low slow squats x 50 IC
 • Mountain climbers x 13 IC

We grabbed the shovel flags and moseyed to the Yellow Rose parking lot. At the YR lot, we took a knee around the flags for a citation reading for US Army Staff Sargent Robert J. Miller.

We split up in to teams of 4. Several of the SOBs joined us, doubling down from Stonehenge with more shovel flags in tow.

 • P1 & P2 ran CMIYC with a sandbag around the Touchstone shopping center block, with 10 merkins each time the partner was caught
 • P3 & P4 made birthday cake (20 merkins, 15 jump squats, 10 LBC, 5 burpees) and ran hairburners
 • Each pair of partners per team completes 2 laps around the block

Following the circuits and some pax-lead Mary, we grabbed the shovel flags and trekked back to the soccer fields.

Each day, an estimated 22 veterans commit suicide. In an effort to bring awareness to mental health and our soldiers returning from war, 22Kill is a movement working to raise awareness to the suicide epidemic that is plaguing our country, and educate the public on mental health issues such as PTSD. 42 men completed 22 merkins = 924 merkins completed.

Circling up again around the flags, the men suffered in silence through 100 burpees OYO, honoring the men and women that died for our freedom.

We had 2 FNGs today: Nemo (Bennett), and Inferno (Dante). Welcome gents – look forward to seeing you guys post again soon.

Following the burpees, Prohibition and YHC ceremoniously turned over the SF to Dear Abby and Buttermaker, the new Day Zero site Qs.

Pro and I were given the opportunity to lead Day Zero, from Radar and Purple Haze (the site forefathers), at the beginning of 2015. It has been an honor leading the men that Q and post at DZ every week. DA and Butter will carry on the tradition of being A51’s toughest Saturday workout.

Citation 1:

William Dean Hawkins

First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps

Born: April 19, 1914

Died: November 21, 1943 – Tarawa, Gilbert Island – Central Pacific

For valorous and gallant conduct above and beyond the call of duty as commanding officer of a Scout Sniper Platoon attached to the Assault Regiment in action against Japanese-held Tarawa in the Gilbert Island, November 20 & 21, 1943. The first to disembark from the jeep lighter, 1 st Lt. Hawkins unhesitatingly moved forward under heavy enemy fire at the end of the Betio Pier, neutralizing emplacements in coverage of troops assaulting the main beach positions. Fearlessly leading his men on to join the forces fighting desperately to gain a beachhead, he repeatedly risked his life throughout the day and night to direct and lead attacks on pillboxes and installations with grenades and demolitions. At dawn on the following day, 1 st Lt. Hawkins resumed the dangerous mission of clearing the limited beachhead of Japanese resistance, personally initiating an assault on a hostile position fortified by 5 enemy machineguns, and, crawling forward in the face of withering fire, boldly fired pointblank into the loopholes and completed the destruction with grenades. Refusing to withdraw after being seriously wounded in the chest during this skirmish, 1 st Lt. Hawkins steadfastly carried the fight to the enemy, destroying 3 more pillboxes before he was caught in a burst of Japanese shellfire and mortally wounded. His relentless fighting spirit in the face of a formidable opposition and his exceptionally daring tactics served as an inspiration to his comrades during the most crucial phase of the battle and reflect the highest credit upon the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Citation 2:

Robert J. Miller

Staff Sergeant, US Army – Special Forces Operational Detachment

Born: October 14, 1983

Died: January 25, 2008 – Konar Providence, Afghanistan

Robert J. Miller distinguished himself by extraordinary acts of heroism while serving as the Weapons Sergeant in Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3312, Special Operations Task Force-33, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan during combat operations against an armed enemy in Konar Province, Afghanistan on January 25, 2008. While conducting a combat reconnaissance patrol through the Gowardesh Valley, Staff Sergeant Miller and his small element of U.S. and Afghan National Army soldiers engaged a force of 15 to 20 insurgents occupying prepared fighting positions. Staff Sergeant Miller initiated the assault by engaging the enemy positions with his vehicle’s turret-mounted Mark-19 40 millimeter automatic grenade launcher while simultaneously providing detailed descriptions of the enemy positions to his command, enabling effective, accurate close air support. Following the engagement, Staff Sergeant Miller led a small squad forward to conduct a battle damage assessment. As the group neared the small, steep, narrow valley that the enemy had inhabited, a large, well-coordinated insurgent force initiated a near ambush, assaulting from elevated positions with ample cover. Exposed and with little available cover, the patrol was totally vulnerable to enemy rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapon fire. As point man, Staff Sergeant Miller was at the front of the patrol, cut off from supporting elements, and less than 20 meters from enemy forces. Nonetheless, with total disregard for his own safety, he called for his men to quickly move back to covered positions as he charged the enemy over exposed ground and under overwhelming enemy fire in order to provide protective fire for his team. While maneuvering to engage the enemy, Staff Sergeant Miller was shot in his upper torso. Ignoring the wound, he continued to push the fight, moving to draw fire from over one hundred enemy fighters upon himself. He then again charged forward through an open area in order to allow his teammates to safely reach cover. After killing at least 10 insurgents, wounding dozens more, and repeatedly exposing himself to withering enemy fire while moving from position to position, Staff Sergeant Miller was mortally wounded by enemy fire. His extraordinary valor ultimately saved the lives of seven members of his own team and 15 Afghanistan National Army soldiers. Staff Sergeant Miller’s heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty, and at the cost of his own life, are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Fast Twitch Swag #FTS

30-40 cars showed up at SCMS this morning. Of those, 13 rolled in for a Ghost Runner-esque Raintree tour. Just a skosh of grumblechatter about the PB and we were off.

Notepad:

 • Most guys took things serious this AM and put in work. FT is a gritty Tuesday option and it’s supposed to push you to your limits. If you left it all out there this morning, T-claps. If not, come back next week and ramp it up a notch.
 • Pinot Grigot (or some crafty IPA) was spilled after the timed mile
 • No idea how the timed mile turned out. Most guys had on watches and nearly everyone PR’ed the Strava segment, so it was in fact, timed.
 • @Haze led the way all morning, most of the way, for about 25 yards between Provi and 4MC. Serious note- the dude’s getting fast #FastTwitchSwag #HeGetsIt
 • @SwishSwish really did lead the pack #shocker. Dropped a CR on the providence hill NBD and ran easily an extra mile scooping the six all morning.
 • @Ironsides looked strong leading up to the CRBR on Saturday. Good luck brother
 • @Huggie and @Utah – 2 other guys who get the #FTS mentality. These guys put in work week after week and it’s paying off.
 • @Pro’s got guts too – not many guys posting on as little sleep as this guy
 • Good seeing @Retread again making the right choice on a Tuesday
 • @Babyfood was @Frasier’s shadow this AM. Crushed the mile hill with a strong pace all morning
 • @Ickey strong work this AM – especially for a guy who typically throws around KBs heavier than @Frasier
 • Didn’t recognize @Icicle this AM without his Gisele Brady hat out there
 • Welcome, @Hannibal. Glad to have you out. Next time you’re in town on a Tuesday, come on back.

Pleasure to lead this AM, gents.
