Burpee Relays & Rocky Round Robins

(Posted on behalf of Picasso.  Tardiness is all responsibility of Abacus.)

Shovel flag was planted early this week as Abacus showed up for a pre-run prior to start of this week’s edition of Area 51.  Passed Picasso and the 2 FNGs (Hoot & El Guapo) he and Croissant brought along, but no one elected to join YHC for the run back to McKee Rd Elementary.  Saving it up for the main event.

With everyone gathered at the launch point Picasso indicated it was 0700 and led us out for the start of his 60 minute beat-down.  Ensuing smokefest went as follows:

Let’s Get Warm:

  • Mosey around the upper field – high knees & butt kickers worked in
  • Circle up for SSH and IW
  • Mosey through adjacent neighborhood down path to Spring Street
  • Circle up for Mountain Climbers and Merkins on the concrete.  Who needs fingertips?
  • Mosey to the lower field through the neighborhood cut through

Burpee Relays:

  • Line up and count off into two teams
  • Team One: O’Tannenbaum, Beaver, Croissant, Hoot
  • Team Two: Abacus, Fraggle, Picasso, El Guapo
  • Plan is to run down to the other end of the field, complete 5 burpees, and run back – but we will complete it as a relay.  Everyone in plank, first person on the team runs down and starts their burpees at which point the second person on the team goes.  When second starts his burpees, the thrid person goes. . . and so on.  Run back to start when done with burpees and plank it up until everyone returns.
  • We did one relay as a baseline.
  • Oops, Q forgot to time it, so let’s run 2nd relay as a baseline.
  • We completed the seond one in 1 minute 58 seconds.  We have 8 more and have to beat that time on each run.  If we don’t, penalty is 5 burpees added to the end of the workout.
  • The PAX got quiet for the next 20 minutes.  When planning this, Q figured we’d miss one or two.  Amazingly, the PAX never missed and we had negative splits.  We finished the 10th round in 1 minute 43 seconds.
  • We did two 10 counts after we finished, then moseyed.  Fraggle was heard saying “Thank You” as the mosey was called.  We all agreed.

Rocky Round Robins:

  • Mosey to the rock pile and grab your favorite lifting rock.
  • Circle up your teams for round robins.  An exercise would be called and the first person on the team would complete fast, max reps.  When he started to slow down, he would pass to the next team member.  The team would keep a rep count and after 3 minutes, we’d see which team reigned supreme.  When you’re not on point doing called exercise, you’re doing a recovery exercise.
  • Let’s go, three minutes of each:
    • Round 1:  Squats when in recovery, shoulder presses when you’re on point
    • Round 2:  LBCs for recovery, Sit-ups w/ your rock when on point
    • Round 3:  Flutters for recovery, Bench press w/ rock when on point
    • Round 4:  Squats for recovery, Curls w/ rock when on point
  • Rounds 5 & 6 will be challenges from the other team.  Losing team gets a sprint across soccer field, winning team gets calf raises (Qs go-to joke exercise)
    • Round 5:  (Courtesy of O’Tannenbaum) Squats when in recovery, Tricep curls when on point
    • Round 6:  (Courtesy of Abacus) Dolly’s for recovery, Goblet squats w/ rock when on point

Return the rocks and double-time back to launch

COT

Moleskin:

  • 50 Burpees, 24 sprints, 1200+ total reps – nice work guys
  • Beaver and Q would kick off each burpee relay & Q couldn’t catch him.  Beaver was a machine!
  • Q announced that if you needed more time with your burpees (like the Q) go early in the relay and if your name rhymed with Babacus, go last.  Nice work Abacus and O’Tannenbaum who ran anchor in each relay and busted out great times
  • Croissant is looking strong after spending a few months on the couch.  Q asked to borrow his watch for the workout to ensure he would show up after Q let the cat out of the bag that burpees and sprints were involved
  • Team One went to a silent count after Team Two got the best of them in Round 1 of the round robins.  Not sure if this was strategy or deception, but it’s suspect!
  • Team One dismantled Team Two with their challenge in Round 5 of the round robins, but they did the sprint anyway.  When asked why, O’Tannenbaum answered, “I didn’t feel like doing calf raises”.  Refusenik, sort of.  In fair play, Team Two elected to join in the sprint as well after winning Round 6.
  • Despite FNGs Hoot and El Guapo claiming they don’t do any strength training, they both killed the workout.  Nice work guys and we look forward to seeing you out again.
  • Cold Cuts was visibly struggling through all sections of the workout.  Keep your head up buddy, keep your head up.  .

Merkins aren’t just for Weekdays anymore

(Posted on behalf of Lobsta Roll)

7 PAX showed up at McKee Road Elementary for another weekly addition of Area 51.  SF was planted firmly in the ground and once we had everyone in tow and determined Slapshot would not be joining us, Lobsta Roll led the crew for a lap around the school.  Gathered up in the upper parking lot area near the soccer fields for COP:

  • MC x 10 IC
  • 25 Merkins
  • Peter Parker x 10 IC

  • IW x 25 IC
  • Parker Peter x 10 IC
  • 25 Merkins
  • MC x 10 IC
  • 25 Merkins
  • Squats x 25 IC

Mosey over to the midfield of the soccer pitch for some Starfish.

  • Set 5 – Shoulder Press Curls &  Tricep Ext x 2 IC, 20 Merkins on the rock

Set your rock back on the rock pile and the PAX headed out for a little jog to the Fire Station on McKee for some Mary:

  • LBCs x 25 IC
  • Flutter x 25 IC
  • Back Scratcher x 25 IC
  • Dolly x 25 IC
  • Mason Twist x 25 IC

Continue jog back to the school through a couple of the adjacent neighborhoods, stopping along the way for various exercises:

  • Stop 1 – Various plank positions
  • Stop 2 – Slow Merkins x 10 IC (the Merkins are really starting to hurt at this point, if not earlier)
  • Stop 3 – People’s Chair (w/out the wall)
  • Stop 4 – Burpee/Merkin Ladder (1 burpee + 1 merkin, 1 burpee + 2 merkins . . . up to 1 burpee + 10 merkins = 10 burpees & 55 merkins total)

Continue jog back to the school through the back of the neighborhood and circle up at the lower fields for some Mary and Plank.

Finish the jog at the playground at the front of the school and wrap it up with 10 pull-ups

COT

NMM:

  • With Lobsta on Q you can count on getting in a full 60 minutes.  Not a lot of down time and pushes the PAX to test their limits.  #ISI
  • Good to have Ocho Cinco out there with us as he is able to keep up with Lobsta and they push each other.
  • Cold Cuts and Picasso walked over from Cold Cuts neighborhood next door for the work-out.  Worked hard and then headed back over without asking for a lift after a tough 60 minutes.
  • O’Tannenbaum has to be, along with Lobsta & Ocho, one of the original or almost original Area 51 Pax.  Continues to regularly post at Area 51 and The Matrix despite the grief he receives about arriving right at Go Time.  Hopefully, his 2.0 made it to volleyball practice on time Saturday after he took her car without leaving a note.
  • Beaver once again kept YHC from claiming WD status.  Much appreciated.  Hopefully you enjoyed the 200+ merkins as much as you usually enjoy the burpees when Lobsta is on Q.

Announcements:

  • Centurion will be converging at The Brave on Friday, 7/3.  0515 launch, so get up a little earlier.
  • Convergence at The Rock on Saturday, 7/4.  All AOs other than Stonehenge will be converging at Calvary.  Hit Stonehenge and then head over to The Rock if you want to celebrate Independence Day with a Double Down.
  • Southern Discomfort will take place on 8/1 in Area 51.  Early launch will be from Stonehenge at 5:15 a.m. with run up to Centurion (13+ miles option if complete the entire event).  Launch from Centurion at 6:00 a.m. (10+ mile option).  3rd option is launch from the Aroboretum (5+ mile option) later in the morning.  More details to follow on Twitter and weekly e-mail.

Pinball Wizards at McKee Rd Elem

4 PAX made it out to McKee Rd Elementary to post at Area 51 AO.  YHC was first one on site and planted the SF in the soil as the others started to pull into the parking lot.  Large pile of limbs in the parking lot as school recently cleaned up the landscaping along the front entrance to the school.  Fortunately for the PAX, no logs and other coupons that we could utilize.  No worries as YHC had plans to introduce everyone to a friendly game of Pinball, as recently unveiled at the Commitment AO by Ice 9 and/or Stump Hugger.  BB always provide fertile ground for work-out ideas.

With everyone on site that was to post for a humid June morning, YHC inquired of the other PAX as to the time as my Timex is currently out of operation.  With confirmation that 0700 start time was upon us, YHC led the PAX on short jog over to the track and we made one loop with some high knees, backwards run, and butt kickers mixed in.

Circled up in the track infield for COP:

  • SSH x 30 IC
  • IW x 30 IC
  • Low, slow squats x 20 IC
  • MC x 30 IC
  • Peter Parker x 30 IC

Time for everyone to try their hand at the aforementioned Pinball.  Idea is that Q will indicate the next destination for a set of exercises.  PAX will head off for the called destination at pace each feels comfortable with.  Early arrivals will then circle back to the 6 and take off again for the destination.  Idea is to keep the group together while also providing stronger runners a little extra mileage if they so desire.

First destination was the NC Landmark play area at the back of the school.  PAX set out and we met up at the logs for the 1st round of exercises, as follows:

  • Jump-ups x 10
  • Decline Merkins x 15
  • LBCs x 20
  • Rinse & Repeat x 2 (w/ various planks/plankjacks mixed in btw rounds)

Next destination was the playground at the other end of the school around back.  PAX took off once again and we met up at the called destination for the following:

  • Dips x 20
  • Sumo Jump Squats x 20
  • Mason Twists x 20
  • Rinse & Repeat x 2 (again w/ various planks mixed in btw rounds)

Getting warmed up now, so we headed out once again for the front of the school and met up at the front wall near the bus parking lot.  Time for a round of People’s Chair and Balls to the Wall:

  • PC x 60 secs (w/ air presses x 30 mixed in)
  • Lunge walk across bus parking lot
  • PC x 75 secs (w/ rt leg up & then left leg up)
  • Lunge walk across
  • BTW x 45 secs

One more playground on the premises that we had not visited, so we headed over to the front of the school.  Once there, we completed the following:

  • Pull-ups x 10
  • Squats x 20
  • Freddie Mercuries x 20
  • Rinse & Repeat x 2

With everyone having so much fun, YHC decided we had time to visit one more destination.  PAX were instructed to head over to the rock pile by the soccer fields.  With all the PAX gathered around we each grabbed a lifting rock and circled up for a little heavy lifting:

  • Rock curls x 15 IC
  • Rock Presses x 15 IC
  • Goblet Squats x 15 IC
  • Tricep Extensions x 15 IC
  • Rinse & Repeat x 2 (w/ 12 reps rd 2, 10 reps rd 3)

Deposit your rocks back on the rock pile and mosey down to the end line of the soccer field.  Line up along the goal line.  Karaoke to midfield with left shoulder leading and then flapjack with right shoulder leading for 2nd half to the other goal line.

5-6 minutes left, so we headed back to launch point for 6 MOM, PAX choice and led:

  • Rosalita x 15 IC (YHC)
  • Mason Twist x 15 IC (Beaver)
  • Back Scratcher x 15 IC (O’Tannenbaum)
  • LBCs x 15 IC (Huggie Bear)
  • CCV x 15R, 15L IC (YHC)

COT

NMM:

  • Plan for work-out was to keep PAX together while also pushing stronger guys who might want a little extra mileage.  Heard about the “Pinball” work-out that Ice 9 and/or Stump Hugger had unveiled at Commitment and decided to give it a try.  Seemed to work out pretty well.
  • O’Tannenbaum mentioned having suffered bout of leg/calf cramps at Devil’s Turn earlier in the week.  Did not seem to affect him here as he was near the front of the pack all morning.
  • Huggie Bear continues to make great strides.  Mentioned he had been posting at the new moderate running work-out, Mountain Goat, on Fridays and you can see the results.
  • Beaver, despite being the War Daddy, always puts forth strong effort for the full 60 minutes.  Busy work schedule on the road keeps him from posting as much as he would like, but he always gives 100% effort.  And T-claps to his oldest 2.0 on recently finding a permanent position in the job market.

Announcements:

  • Be on the look-out for pre-blast with additional details on Area 51’s version of Metro’s “The Goat”, to be held on Saturday, August 1.  Work-out will cover 7-9 miles, with launch from Centurion AO at Charlotte Catholic and stops at 6-7 AOs along the Hwy 51 corridor.
  • Area 51’s F3 Dads is being held each Saturday in June at Colonel Francis Beatty Park on Weddington Road, 9-10 a.m.  Bring out your 2.0s, boys and girls, for a kid friendly work-out.  Mr Brady will be the Q for Saturday, 6/27.

A Manatee and Soft Shell Crab Walk into a . . .

(Posted on behalf of Cold Cuts)

13 PAX made the decision to test their quads endurance level at Area 51 for Cold Cuts VQ.  Rumor has it the Q had no intentions of burning the PAX’s quads, it just happened that way.  So SF was planted in the soil at McKee Rd Elementary and the day went like so. . .

Q took PAX for a short mosey through the local neighborhood (mixed in some high knees & butt kickers) with an Indian Run to get the competitive juices flowing.  Had enough time to allow O’Tannenbaum to catch up to the group and join in.  Next we circled up for the COP:

  • Arm Circles
  • SSH x 30 IC
  • Low, slow squats x 25 IC
  • IW x 25 IC
  • 10 Burpees

A quick stroll over to the soccer fields and Cold Cuts delivered the bad news.  He had a deck of cards and somehow pain was to follow.  Each PAX would have an opportunity to pull a card from the deck for a called exercise.  The value of the card x 3 determined the number of reps to be completed and the suit drawn dictated the exercise.  Rumor has it there were 4 exercises: Merkins, Burpees, Plank Up/Down (aka Makhtar N’Diaye), and Ninja Squats.  In between each draw the PAX would run from soccer goal to soccer goal (60-70 yards).  The PAX quickly learned the “Law of Averages” was not working in everyone’s favor.  Over and over and over again the Ninja Squat suit (Clubs) was chosen.  Screams of “Audible” or “BS” could be heard as we over and over again muscled through the Ninja Squats.  After 13 rounds of called exercises it was time to head off again.

Q had no sympathy for the group as we next went to the school from some wall sits and planks.  13 PAX lined the school wall, shoulder to shoulder, and began:

  • R1 – 20 lb medicine ball was handed down the line and back x 3.  Then the group quickly assumed the Plank position, shoulder to shoulder, and pushed the same 20 lb medicine ball down and back x 3.
  • R2 – Same rotation this time with some air presses thrown in for good measure.
  • R3 – Same rotation but we did 4 runs of the medicine ball on each exercise with a little extra 10 second hold time.

By this point the quads were asking each of its owners “WHY????”.

Cold Cuts then gave us a nice walk over to the school playground set and had us partner up for a team mini-Murph.  Each team completed the following:

  • 3 stations – 20 Pull-ups, 40 Merkins, 60 Squats (reps divided between team members as they saw fit)
  • Rinse & repeat x 5 for total of 100 Pull-ups, 200 Merkins, 300 Squats per team.  Well done men.  The group finish of 60 squats in unison was strong.

Followed the mini-Murph up with a group run around the school.  Q then lined us up for one final AYG sprint down the parking lot.  Cold Cuts requested every PAX to give 100% and finish strong and each of the PAX answered the call.

Finished up with a few LBCs and the clock mercifully hit 0800.

NMM:

  • Welcome to Manatee and Soft Shell to the PAX.  Great to have you join us and look forward to seeing you back out in the gloom.
  • Nice VQ from Cold Cuts.  Brought a good amount of creativity and pushed the PAX while keeping us together as a group.
  • Good to have a couple PAX from other AOs join us (Rebel from The Fort and Cat Gut from Metro).  Come back anytime.
  • Speaking of Cat Gut, EH’d by couple Area 51 PAX (Frazier and others) to join us at McKee.  They must have got caught in some traffic.

Announcements:

  • Area 51 F3 Dads is back on the docket for June.  Held each Saturday at Colonel Francis Beatty park on Weddington Road from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Fun opportunity to bring your 2.0s, boys and girls, and run around and exercise on a Saturday morning.  80+ for this year’s kick-off weekend.
  • Area 51 AO is participating in Area 51 Calvary Church Pantry Food Drive the week of 06/08-06/13.  We will be collecting canned vegetables (no corn or green beans) at our AO next Saturday, 6/13.  Abacus will collect the canned goods and deliver to Mermaid.

A Devil of a Work-out

Yes, the humidity is high.  Yes, it is a little warm even at 0700 hours these days.  That did not prevent 6 PAX from deciding to post at Area 51 this morning.  We gathered around the SF prior to the launch and wondered if Floor Slapper would join us at his customary 0701 hours.  With the clock showing it to be 0700 and no sign of FS coming in hot, we headed out for a warm-up run around the soccer field while mixing in some high knees, butt kickers and backwards run and then circled up for COP:

  • SSH x 30 IC
  • Squat x 15 IC
  • IW x 30 IC
  • Merkins x 15 IC
  • MC x 30 IC

With everyone having now broken a sweat, we headed over to side field for the Devil’s Work-out/Beast.  Line up at the end line and then instructions were given to run to first tree/marker, complete 6 reps of called exercise, run to 2nd tree/marker, 6 reps, 3rd tree/marker, 6 reps, and then bring it back with 3 additional stops for 6 reps at each stop/marker.  This was repeated 5 times for total of 6 rounds.  Called exercises were:

  • Squats
  • Hand-release Merkins
  • LBCs
  • Sister Mary Katherine
  • Mason Twist
  • Spartan Burpee

Planked between each round to wait for the 6 and keep us all together.

Circle up for 6 MOM:

  • Dolly x 15 IC
  • Flutter x 15 IC
  • Rosalita x 15 IC
  • LBC x 15 IC
  • Back Scratcher x 15 IC  (Thx Beaver for reminder of exercise name)
  • CCV x 15L IC
  • CCV x 15R IC

Having caught our breath after a hot start, we headed over to the NC Landmark play area behind the school.  Plan was for a little circuit work, but we would be completing circuits at 2 locations, as follows:

  • At landmark play area, complete Jump-ups/Step-ups on logs x 10, Decline Merkins x 10, Tire Hops x 10
  • Run to back of school to the wall near picnic tables.  Complete Donkey Kicks x 10, Dips x 10
  • Rinse & repeat x 3, replacing Decline Merkins with Incline Merkins, Carolina Dry Docks, and Wide-arm Merkins
  • For those finishing early each round we had active recovery with Flutters, Dollys, Freddie Mercuries, etc

Time for a little People’s Chair, so we relocated just slightly south to end of school wall:

  • PC x 60 secs, w/ arms out front and then air presses x 30
  • Lunge walk out 25-30 yards
  • PC x 75 secs w/ arms overhead and then arms presses out front x 30
  • Lunge walk out 25-30 yards

Time to get moving again, but with the sun out and the humidity high YHC had us stay in the area behind the school to at least get the benefit of the shade.  Line up on one end for 7s

  • Run to other end & complete 6 Plank Jacks
  • Back to start for 1 Jump Squat
  • Run to other end for 5 Plank Jacks/Back to start for 2 Jump Squats
  • Continue sequence for 4/3, 3/4, 2/5, 1/6

4 minutes left, so we circled up for final 4 MOM:

  • Protractor
  • Rosalita x 15 IC
  • High Flutter x 15 IC
  • LBCs x 15 IC
  • Freddie Mercuries x 15 IC

Head back to launch point for COT

NMM:

  • The Beast/Devil’s Work-out is always a bear.  We covered 150-160 yards each round trip and 6 reps might not sound like a lot, but by time you complete 6×6 reps each round you are feeling it.  And it wouldn’t be the Beast/Devil’s Work-out if we didn’t finish it up with Burpees for final round.
  • Cold Cuts spent much of the Beast at front of pack and O’Tannenbaum must really like burpees because he was flying on the last round.
  • Round of Mary after the Beast provided PAX opportunity to catch their breath for a little bit, but we then got the heart rates rev’d back up with the circuit work between the Landmarks play area and the back wall of the school.  Cold Cuts & O’Tannenbaum continued to push the pace, but Picasso, Squid and Beaver never let them get too far ahead.
  • Original plan was to head up to the track for the 7s, but the area behind the school was nicely shaded and YHC was in a giving mood this morning.  We had sweated enough as it was.
  • Squid confessed to enjoying a cold beverage last night (just 1).  He is entitled to 2 or 3 tonight after the work that was put in this a.m.

Announcements:

  • New moderate running work-out to be held on Fridays at South Charlotte Middle School.  Originally called “Endurance” but name has been switched due to Copyright laws or maybe it was another work-out had that name.  Will be known as “Mountain Goat” going forward.  Slimfast and Stump Hugger are co-QICs and Strange Brew will assist while Stump Hugger continues to recover from plantar fasciitis.
  • Kevlar/Joust Friday morning work-out will be held at Arboretum for the summer while school campuses undergo renovations.
  • Mermaid is leading effort to collect food for Calvary Church (site of Anvil and The Rock weekly work-outs) Food Pantry.  Looking for various AOs and PAX to participate if possible.   Collections will be made at work-out sites the week of June 8-13.  Contact Mermaid, f3mermaid@yahoo.com, to sign up to participate or sound off in Comments of the pre-blast: http://f3nation.com/2015/05/29/calvary-church-pantry-food-drive/
  • Cold Cuts will be making his VQ next Saturday, 6/6, at Area 51.  Yes, he is a professional and yes it will hurt.
  • Thx to O’Tannenbaum for the take-out

12 x 12s for the Lucky 5

5 PAX posted at McKee Rd Elementary for another Saturday edition of Area 51.  Shovel flag was planted firmly in the soil by the picnic tables and quick abbreviated version of disclaimer was provided to experienced group before we headed out for another 60 minutes of fun.  First 4 headed out at 0700 and then we circled the lot to allow O’Tannenbaum to join us.  Headed over to the track and ran a lap with some high knees and butt kickers worked in for good measure.  Circled up on the track infield for COP:

  • SSH x 25 IC
  • IW x 25 IC
  • Squats x 15 IC
  • Merkins x 15 IC
  • MC x 25 IC

With warm-up complete, YHC led PAX back to his car near launch point and opened up trunk to reveal 12 x 12 pavers for all.  Each PAX member was instructed to take 1 paver to be carried with them the rest of the work-out.  With that we headed over to the soccer fields and lined up along the sideline near the sidewalk.  Instruction was given to complete 3 exercises with the paver and then complete called movement (approx 25-30 yards) with jog back.

  • Rd 1 – Paver Curls x 5, Paver Presses x 5, Goblet Squats x 5, Bear crawl out, jog it back
  • Rd 2 – Paver Curls x 10, Paver Presses x 10, Goblet Squats x 10, Crab walk out, jog it back
  • Rd 3 – Paver Curls x 15, Paver Presses x 15, Goblet Squats x 15, Broad jump out, jog it back
  • Rd 4 – Paver Curls x 10, Paver Presses x 10, Goblet Squats x 10, Lunge walk out, jog it back
  • Rd 5 – Paver Curls x 5, Paver Presses x 5, Goblet Squats x 5, Bear Crawl out, Crab Walk back
  • Mixed in various Plank (RHH, LHH, RH back pocket, LH back pocket, elbows, etc) between each round.

Mosey over to playground at front of school with paver in tow.  Complete the following:

  • Pull-ups x 10, Weighted Dips (paver in lap) x 20, Goblet Squats x 20
  • Rinse & repeat x 2

With 1st half in the books, we headed over to front of the school for session of People’s Chair:

  • PC x 60 secs, with Paver extended out front & then overhead for Presses x 15
  • Lunge walk to sidewalk
  • PC x 75 secs, with Paver presses in and out & then held overhead
  • Lunge walk to sidewalk

Time to get moving again, so we took our pavers and headed back down to the track infield for a couple rounds of suicide ladder.

  • Rd 1 – Paver curl x 5, run suicide to 1st tree & back, Paver curl x 10, run suicide to 2nd tree & back, Paver curl x 15, run suicide to 3rd tree & back
  • Rd 2 – Tricep Extensions x 5, 10, 15 w/ suicides
  • Rd 3 – Mason twist w/ paver x 5, 10, 15 w/ suicides

Caught our breath and then we mosied around the back of the school and made our way to the stumps at the NC Historical Landmarks area for another round of circuit work:

  • Rd 1 – 10 Jump-ups/Step-ups, 20 Paver Presses, 10 Tire Hops
  • Rinse & repeat x 2

A little time left on the clock, so we circled up on the grass for 3 MOM:

  • Dolly x 20 IC, with Paver held high
  • Flutter x 20 IC, with Paver held high
  • LBC w/ paver x 20 IC
  • Mason Twist w/ paver x 15 IC

Grab your paver and return it to YHC’s trunk as that’s a wrap

COT

Moleskin:

  • Completing a little spring cleaning around the yard the last week or two and came across the 12 x 12 pavers that we were no longer in need of.  M has not sold them on Ballantyne Bargains yet, so thought they would make a nice addition to our work-out.
  • O’Tannenbaum wheeled in right at 0700, so we circled his car on our initial run in order to let him join us.  Thankfully, he did not get spooked and try to run us over.
  • Despite his late arrival, OT was pushing the pace throughout the morning.
  • Strong efforts by Squid and Huggie Bear on the bear crawl/crab walk/broad jump set as well as the suicide ladder.  Glad to see them out at Area 51 weekly.
  • Beaver made it back out despite spending quite a bit of time on the road lately with the job.  YHC was glad to have him join us as he kept me from claiming WD status once again.
  • Thanks to O’Tannenbaum for taking us out.

Announcements:

  • Check out the F3 website or weekly e-mail for additional information on “Death March”, to be held towards the end of May on the Booty Loop in Myers Park.
  • Area 51 will hold an event similar to the Metro’s “Goat”, which was held on 5/9.  Will be held the first part of August.  Event will hit many of the Area 51 AOs along the Hwy 51 corridor.  More news to follow in the weekly e-mails.
  • New moderate running work-out to be held at South Charlotte Middle School (site of Death Valley & Fast Twitch) on Fridays, beginning 6/5.  Caters to beginning, intermediate, advanced, and recovering runners.

VQ brings the heat

14 PAX made the wise decision to post on a muggy May morning at Area 51 for Picasso’s VQ.  Don’t think anyone left disappointed.  SF was planted in the soil at McKee Rd Elementary and YHC gave the disclaimer with a few new faces in tow for our weekly Saturday edition of Charlotte South’s “Original”, “Granddaddy” (you get the picture) work-out.

YHC had the first half and so we headed out for a warm-up lap around the soccer fields, mixing in some Karaoke, Backwards runs, and Forward runs before circling up for the COP:

  • SSH x 20 IC
  • IW x 20 IC
  • Low, slow squats x 20 IC
  • MC x 20 IC
  • Peter Parker x 20 IC
  • Parker Peter x 20 IC

With the joints warmed up and everyone ready to roll, we headed over to the side near the lower parking lot and lined up on one end for a Suicide Ladder:

  • R1 – Run to 1st tree, 10 CDD, Run back, Run to 2nd tree, 20 CDD, Run back, Run to 3rd tree, 30 CDD, Run back
  • R2 – Same runs, substitute 10/20/30 Prisoner Squats for the CDD
  • R3 – Substitute 10/20/40 LBCs for Prisoner Squats
  • Worked in some planks between each round as the Six finished up

Mosey over to the playground at front of school for a little circuit work.  With Salt Lick in attendance, had to make sure we worked a few pull-ups in during our 60 minutes.

  • 3 stations – 10 Pull-ups, 20 Dips, 20 Lunges (10 each leg)
  • Rinse & repeat x 2

Hand the baton off to Picasso for his VQ as he took the reins for the 2nd half.  He had promised a smoker in a series of e-mails with YHC and Cold Cuts (not able to attend due to 2.0 ball game at 8 a.m.) and he did not disappoint.  Led the PAX back down to the soccer fields and had us count off into 3 groups.  Each PAX would stay with his group the remainder of the work-out.

Started us off with Bear Crawl Indian Run relay race.  Each team lined up at end of soccer field in a line with each PAX member in Plank.  PAX at back of line bear crawled to front and completed 5 merkins.  When completed, next PAX went.  Continued this until each team made it to light pole at midfield.  It was sucktastic.

After that fun, Picasso announced that it was time for the Bruce Jenner/Dan O’Brien Decathlon Challenge.  Each team completes 10 reps of posted exercise at light pole at midfield and then runs out and back to designated light pole across the field.  Stay together as a team.

  • Event 1 – Burpees
  • Event 2 – Jump Squats
  • Event 3 – Russian Twists
  • Event 4 – Turkish Get-ups
  • Event 5 – Merkins
  • Event 6 – LBCs
  • Event 7 – Monkey Humpers
  • Event 8 – Carolina Drydocks
  • Event 9 – Freddie Mercuries
  • Event 10 – Flutters

Everyone seemed to enjoy the team aspect, so Picasso led PAX across the lower parking lot to lower field at back right corner of the AO.  Staying with your team, one PAX member ran loop up the hill and around while other PAX completed called exercise.  PAX running loop stopped for 5 wide-arm merkins, 5 diamond merkins, & 5 regular merkins before returning to launch point.

Exercises completed while PAX running:

  • Flutters
  • LBCs
  • Squats

Head back to launch point.  1 minute left, so PAX were instructed to jog to other end of teacher parking lot and then AYG back.

COT

Moleskin:

  • T-claps to Picasso on his VQ.  Came with a good gameplan and managed to smoke the PAX.
  • Suicide Ladder set up to hit the upper body, the legs, and the abs.  Hopefully, no one left disappointed.  Usual suspects Joker, Ocho Cinco, and Lobster Roll were out front with Turkey Leg, Pop Tart, and Salt Lick pushing the pace as well.  Salt Lick didn’t seem to skip a beat as he works his way back after dealing with bad back/discs for a while.
  • Bear Crawl Indian Run relay was painful. It seemed to take forever to cover the approximately 50 yards.
  • Welcome to Pine Tar on his initial post at Area 51 AO and his 2nd post overall.  Hope to see you back out there regularly.  It was muggy out there.
  • Strong effort put forth by Squid and Slapshot throughout the work-out.  Slapshot received compliment from Ocho on his trimmed down physique, in case anyone did not notice.
  • Area 51 Saturday morning stalwarts Huggie Bear, O’Tannenabum, and Floor Slapper rounded out the crew and continue to get stronger every week.

Announcements:

  • 1st Saturday of each month, Joker is leading work-out, visit with kids at Alexander Youth Network.  Takes place in the afternoon and continues to evolve as we determine what the kids respond to best.  Some type of physical activities involved, whether it is boot camp style work-out or games outside.  Contact Joker, Shawn.Heath@duke-energy.com, for more information or if interested in helping out.
  • Blue Ridge Relay is scheduled for Sept 11th and 12th.  F3 has 50+ teams in the 160 team field.  Spots still available as some PAX have had to drop out due to injuries, etc.  Contact Turkey Leg, scott_mastbrook@yahoo.com, if interested in joining a team or getting on the waiting list.
  • Area 51 event similar to the Metro’s Goat to be held in early August.  Look for pre-blast with more details to follow.  Event will hit many of the Area 51 AOs on the Hwy 51 corridor.
  • “Death March” CSAUP event to be held 5/29.  Held on the 2.8 mile Booty Loop in Metro area.  See F3 website and/or Area 51 weekly e-mail for additional information.

A rock is a terrible thing to waste

12 PAX joined YHC at McKee Rd Elementary for a tour of the campus that serves as host AO of Charlotte South’s elder statesman of work-outs, Area 51.  YHC was looking forward to getting back into the Gloom on a regular basis after being an infrequent participant due to a little 4/15 deadline that seemed to occupy most of my time.  The morning brought the promise of a nice day for 60 minutes of hard work to get the weekend started off right.

Greeted two visitors, Rebel, who was up from the Fort, and Boo Boo, who is an Area 51 resident who has worked out with Metro crowd in the past as he works Uptown.  Glad to have both of them out and would welcome them back anytime.

Led the PAX off on a light jog through the lower parking lot, around the 1st island and then back to the lower parking lot at top end of the soccer fields where we circled up for the COP:

  • With visitors in tow, YHC provided quick disclaimer
  • SSH x 20 IC
  • IW x 20 IC
  • Low Slow Squat x 20 IC
  • MC x 20 IC
  • Peter Parker x 20 IC
  • Parker Peter x 20 IC

After nice warm-up it was time to head over to the rock pile to pick up a pet rock.  PAX was instructed that we would be taking our coupons along with us for a good while during the work-out, so pick accordingly.  YHC would have been well served to have heeded his own warning.  Live and learn.

With rocks in tow we headed over to the soccer field and lined up along the sideline for the following:

  • 10 rock curls
  • 10 rock presses
  • 10 goblet squats
  • Drop rock and run to other sideline and back
  • Rinse & repeat x 2 w/ Plank series after Rds 2 & 3 (Several Larry Bird’s during this series)

Grab your rock and let’s head over to the stumps behind the school

  • 20 step-ups (10 each leg)
  • 10 rock curls
  • 10 tire hops
  • Rd 2 – PAX option of 20 step-ups or 10 Jump-ups, then 10 rock presses, 10 tire hops
  • Rd 3 – 20 step-ups or 10 Jump-ups, 10 tricep extensions w/ rock, 10 tire hops

Head over to the grass and find a somewhat dry area for 6 MOM w/ our pet rocks

  • Dolly w/ rock press x 20 IC
  • Flutter w/ rock press x 20 IC
  • Rosalia (no rock) x 20 IC
  • LBC (no rock ) x 25 IC
  • Russian/Mason Twist w/ rock x 10 IC

Leave the rocks in the circle and we headed over to the entrance of the nature trail

  • 20 dips on the benches, run the trail, 20 step-ups
  • Rinse & repeat

Time to head back to pick up our pet rocks before someone tries to steal them.  Bear crawl up the hill at the entrance to the trail and then mosey back to our rocks.

Quick repeat of our 6 MOM

  • Dolly w/ rock press x 20 IC
  • Flutter w/ rock press x 20 IC
  • Rosalia (no rock) x 20 IC
  • LBC (no rock ) x 25 IC
  • Russian/Mason Twist w/ rock x 10 IC

Back to the stumps for two more rounds

  • 20 step-ups or 10 Jump-ups, 10 rock curls, 10 tire hops

Enough quality time with our pet rocks, so we headed back to the rock piles and dropped off our friends.  Headed back to the playground at the front of the school for a little circuit work

  • 10 Pull-ups
  • 20 Prisoner squats
  • 20 Incline merkins on the curb
  • Rinse & repeat replacing Incline merkins with Decline merkins

Head over to the wall at front of the school for People’s Chair

  • PC x 75 secs (w/ arms out front and then air presses x 25)
  • Lunge walk to sidewalk
  • Back to wall for PC x 60 secs (w/ rt leg up then left leg up & then air presses x 20)
  • Lunge walk to sidewalk

Short mosey to launch point and wrap it up with 5 Burpees OYO to keep DK content

NMM:

  • Great group of men out this Saturday with a couple new faces and some veterans hadn’t seen out at Area 51 in a while
  • Rebel, a regular at the Fort, had to drop his 2.0 off at Charlotte Latin for swim practice w/ Swim MAC and decided to join us since we were just around the corner.  Even managed to EH Boo Boo, who had previously worked out with Metro crowd at Cotswold and Freedom Park but apparently had been AWOL for a while. Glad to have you both out and you are welcome to join us again anytime.  Boo Boo has been added to Area 51 mailing list.
  • A number of Larry Birds on the work on the soccer fields.  Cold Cuts was flying out there and Croissant, Donkey Kong, and O’Tannenbaum were right up there with him.
  • Tried to vary the exercises to distribute the work between the upper body, the legs and the core.
  • Crab Cake was one of the veterans that returned this weekend.  Know how he enjoys swinging the Kettle Bell, so he should have felt right at home with the rock for a good part of the work-out.
  • Good to see Squid and Beaver out there on Saturday.  Good discussion of Yankee/Red Sox history at coffeteria afterwards as these two brought up the stars from 60s, 70s and 80s.
  • Appreciate the push from Turkey Leg on the second trek around the nature trail, even if he did not realize he was providing one.  Dragging there a little bit toward the end, but the sound of TL’s footsteps kept me forging ahead.
  • Thanks to Floor Slapper for the take out.

Announcements:

  • Great opportunity to provide some much needed male leadership with kids at Alexander Youth Network.  Joker is leading a work-out there the 1st Saturday of each month.  For May, we will be having a cook-out on May 2nd rather than a work-out.  Let Joker know if have any interest in helping with cook-out or assisting with a work-out there in the upcoming months.  (Shawn.Heath@duke-energy.com)
