Rolling the dice at my VQ at the Abyss.

After a restless night of nerves and panic, I arrived at the Abyss (Palisades Elementary School) at 4:45am for my F3_VQ. It was only about 25°F. I got there early to set up my props and to be ready for the droves of pax to show up. I quickly set out 2 pair of dice, one pair in the center of the front parking lot and one pair the center of the rear lot. By now it was 4:50am. I guess I didn’t need to get here so early… 5am came, then 5:05, then 5:10… and still no one had shown. I pity the fouls… Then, a parade of vehicles raced in. I didn’t know what had gotten my nerves tweaked more, the fear of nobody showing up, or that so many did. 11 pax decided to brave the cold for me. Let’s get it on!

Now it was time to Q. I’m not a pro, yadda yadda yadda, Lets Mozy… After a short-ish warm up jog, we gathered in the center of the front parking lot of the school around 2 large dice.

I had handpicked 11 options, to coincide with the possible dice rolls. The crew seemed to have a fun time, as we each had the change to ‘roll the dice’. With the odds for or against, this workout could have been a breeze, or maybe even as painful as a Witch Hunt or a Wild Thing workout.

Of all the exercise options, 2 were set to ‘run to next station’. (I inserted this option twice because I was afraid that maybe we’d never roll it and be stuck at the first station for the entire workout.) Such was not the case, I think we ended up running at least 5 times.

After 35 minutes of that, we wondered over for some wall sits. Then I got to unveil my modification to ‘balls to the wall’. I call it, ‘peters on the wall’. 10count peter parkers, on a hand-stand. I think it went over well. Maybe even ‘Exicon’ well. After that, a wondering ‘Indian Run’ lead us back to COT with 2 minutes to spare. Thank you DaVinci for offering to call out an ab lab to bring us to a close.

COT

Post ‘Name-o-Rama’, these great men asked for prayers for struggling family members, relatives who have passed away, and safe travels for all over the holidays. Aye!

At the beginning and end of today’s workout, I recited the ‘Serenity Prayer’. It’s short and to the point, no matter how religious you aren’t.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

I hope that my pax can remember this prayer as they push thru life. If you can see that something in our life needs to change, and you have the ability to change it. Please, gather your strength and courage and change it. If you find that you can’t, the let it bother you no more, for it will only drag you down.

Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to change your morning, and to change my self confidence a bit. God Bless.

Special Thanks To:
Kenyon, Vini, Nasa, Cable Guy, Royale, WitchHunt, Senator Tressel, DaVinci, WildThing, Whopper, and CornerStone for all the support and encouragement that you have given me.

Switch!

6 of us for some rock-n-roll and some heavy lifting. 515, YHC rolls up to a new AO, first visit, not even sure where the normal guys park. Set up all the gear and park near the school; not even close to were the cars start pulling in. So, what’s a guy to do.. the gear’s already set up, everything in place, so YHC begins the the walk up the hill (no KB in hand, as they are all at the gear stations) and starts shaking hands. First, Chin Music, then Freedom, Fault Line .etc Finally, a familiar face, Alf, and then Turkey Leg. Turkey Leg see’s no bell in YHC’s hands… “you know this is a KB/Gear workout, right?”. Let’s see what happens next. Hint: I knew it was a gear workout.

Thang

Walk (#0.0) down to the school side walk, with the bells. The fact that gear stations had already been set up slowly dawns on each man, and each unconsciously let out a grunt of approval, or at least understanding (Hmm, …ah, ah, hmm, err <- the err was Turkey Leg). YHC explains the stations and gets the rock music cranking (Voodoo would be proud). 35 seconds of max effort at each station, 10 seconds of move to the next. Boiled down to YHC saying SWITCH!!! alot.

1st 20 minutes

  1. KB Snatch (35lb) Alternating hands
  2. Barbell Deadlift (185lb)
  3. Double DumbBell (25lb) Straight Arm Raise (#brolift)

  4. KB One Arm Swings with (80lb Bell)
  5. KB Double Racked Squats (40lb bells)
  6. Diamond Bell Merkins

3rd 10 minutes

  1. KB Swing (35lb) Alternating hands

  6. Diamond Bell Merkins

Circle Up for 20 merkins. And Done.

Moleskin

Solid job today from the Meathead PAX. There were a few modifications by some,
but by and large performed most of the heavier things as RXed. Kudos guys. It’s
never easy to mix heavy and fast. If it wasn’t for a hectic schedule the next
3 days, all the solid individual performances would be recounted for you here in
great detail. Perhaps you PAX can add some commentary to the bottom as time has
run out for this blast.

High Tide and Brown, thanks for the oppo at a new gear site. Plan a KB field trip
to Foxhole soon.

No man left behind…unless you are Hairball

11 fine men showed up for not-so-cold running weather this morning to tackle the hills of Five Knolls.  If only the real LC had such curves and hills that show would still be on TV.

The Thang

So of course everyone is going to know what we did this morning…we ran.  But, because we are such wild and crazy guys, we decided to run Five Knolls in reverse.  It has been a while since the crew of DT has hit these hills…many a morning was spent here during BRR training.  The route was down Bevington, up Elm, on to 51 and then into the Whitegate entrance of Five Knolls.  Reverse the run out to Rea and back as many times as you can and don’t be late for COT or TigerRag will be pissed.

Skinny Mole

Nice crew this morning.  11 Pax still going strong with the running a few days before Christmas.  We had some greatness at DT this morning…one HB who ran sub 3:10 at Kiawah, one HB who ran almost sub 3:15 at Kiawah, and Frasier who was knocking on the door of 3:10 at Kiawah.  All three very, very impressive times…

Good group this morning….  YHC gave the direction and off we went.  For the first 1.5 miles everyone stayed together and then the group started to separate.  Frasier was as usual out front killing it followed closely behind by HoneyBee.  TigerRag was giving guidance (or talking smack) to Hairball shortly behind the Bee…  The rest of the Pax settled into a nice pace in groups of 2 or 3 for the remainder of the day.  Didn’t hear to much mumblechatter to begin today…but I thank Tuck for the nice conversation about loading Kodi on the Fire Stick so I can watch just about anything, and also enjoyed talking to WildTurkey about his Reindeer Games coming up at Stonehenge this Saturday.

It didn’t really get interesting until we got back to COT.  A few of us broke off early and made it back…followed closely by several other Pax.  We thought we might have lost OneNiner and Utah….but 1-9er eventually showed up.  No Utah.  Hairball decided to go out looking for Utah to go home before COT because he had things to do.  No man left behind…unless Hairball has a busy schedule.  Normally TR is the first one to graciously remind me that time is up and people have things to do….today Hairball stepped up to the plate for that one.

Nice job out there today guys…hope everyone has a great holiday season.

Oh….Utah made it back.  And we prayed that Hairball’s schedule isn’t too busy next week.

Announcements:

DaVinci & Stonehenge convergence on Saturday (WildTurkey and JRRTolkien on Q — should be an interesting one).

Foxhole & DMZ convergence on Monday.

It’s not going in our yard, Russ.

11 men gathered in an elementary school parking lot on an it-feels-colder-than-the-thermometer-said kind of morning. NBD, we’re taking off quickly to get warmed up. No, wait, here comes Floor Slapper. Pause at the school entrance for half-hearted SSH and mountain climbers. Here comes somebody else. Should we wait? The car had a FIA sticker. Do they meet here? Would it be creepy if we waited? Let’s go. Quick right out of the school, then another right down the road there into the neighborhood (Puddin’ Pop can provide road names if you need them). Slight pause at the turn to wait again – oh, that’s just Floor Slapper, somehow 50 yards behind the group on a 50 yard run. Down to the bottom of the hill where, finally, Puddin’ Pop came in with the late arriver, Slice.

Run back up the hill to the first speed hump, 5 HR merkins. Back down to the start. 5 squat jumps. Repeat up to the second road hump, then all the way to Rea. Spackler was out front, but muttered “a little aggressive” when he passed me at the Rea turnaround. Hannibal appreciated that we had we already had 2 miles behind us, less than 20 minutes in. Maybe “appreciated” isn’t the right word.

After a brief Mary recovery, gather at the end of the road there, then AYG to the end of the road where it dead ends into the other road (.25 miles). Another bit of Mary, then slow mosey up the road to the road with the hill that starts with “Fox”. Triple Nickle on said hill with CDDs at the top, squat jumps at the bottom.

A little more Mary, then slow mosey on the trail through the woods (disclaimer). Find a partner that you don’t know well. One partner planks and holds the other’s feet for 20 old school situps, then flapjack. Yog up to the picnic tables for 10 derkins, 15 dips, repeat. Over to the front field for a handful of all-you-care-to-give sprints. Done.

3.5 miles total. We didn’t do Champagne-level merkins, but we worked in enough upper body stuff to make me tired. Speaking of Champagne, his date with Squid at The Lodge must’ve gone late since he was a no-show. #VoodooCommit. Hannibal was looking fresh in his camo pants – does Hops know you have his pants?

We have a naming issue with Pele – he was named in Metro, but works out in the Southland where we already have a Pele. A small group gathered after the workout to discuss referring to him henceforth as “Pele 2 – Electric Boogaloo”. Here, take a few minutes to watch the Dance Combat scene. You’re welcome.

Emeril’s Running Show

7 PAX showed up with their beards and Bubba Gump hats for a day that was promoted as a running workout.  Props to Ranger for dragging his dad out of the fart sac to arrive on time for a change.  YHC started the music and we got rolling.

MOLESKIN

While Forrest, Jenny, and Emeril were there to help us get through the workout, the PAX didn’t need them.  Ranger is making the most of his school break by impressively leading from the front on the runs.  Transporter got even faster after he got a little lighter after the warmup.  Frack muscled through another running workout after yesterday’s 5 miler (at least he had shoes on though).  Gator Cub continues to be sneaky fast.  Shampoodle keeping up with everyone despite being out a couple weeks.  Posse not letting his 2.0 get the best of him with an All You Got sprint with Jenny at the end barely beat, errr, lose to Ranger.

Always great to Q at this AO; lots of options.  Lots to be thankful for this Christmas season but F3 and this group of MEN are near the top of my list.  Appreciate the leadership, accountability, and servant attitudes that each of you bring to the table that push me to be better everyday.  Merry Christmas!

Grumpy Old Man

It was a little nippy this morning, and 9 men showed up at the charge to find out what Chowda had planned for his birthday party. We had a few stragglers due to lack of planning for scraping the ice off the windshield, warming up the car, etc. So we took a lap around the upper lot before heading to the field for a lap around the track, and COP SSH x25, Merkin x10, MC x15. Mosey to the goal line for some ladders of pain. Run the length of the field stopping every 10 yards for the called exercise increasing reps from 1 – 10 on the way out, decrease from 9-1 on the way back.

Round 1 Burpees (crowd pleaser), plank until the Q finishes, 51 LBC’s IC, take a lap

Round 2 Monkey Humpers (reps x2), plank until the Q finishes, 51 Freddie Mercury IC, take a lap

Round 3 HR Merkins (arm fail), plank until the Q finishes, Wall Sit, 10 air press IC

Animals – Bear Crawl 25 yds, Crab Walk 25 yds, reapeato, sprint back to the goal line

Mosey back to COT

Nice work out there, a lot of heavy breathing in COT. Thanks for sharing the first hour of your day with me on my Birthday.

The Charge is planning to shutter its doors after next week. It has been a regular stop for me over the past few years, and I will miss connecting with our Area 51 brothers each week. Let’s make sure we close out the AO with a bang next week if we can’t find a way to sustain this workout. Kudos to DD’s and Baracus for sustaining this group on the outskirts of Area 51 and Metro.

Thanks to Tesla for leading us out in prayer.

Ciabatta be KIDDING Me: Holiday Jukebox Edition 2.0

Deck The Maul with bros and dolly, fa la la la la, la la la la.

I see Squid but where’s Big Papi, fa la la la la, la la la la.

Don we now our mud gear apparel, fa la la la, la la la, la la la.

What’s that there? It’s Frehley’s towel, fa la la la la, la la la la.

That’s more than enough of that. 19 (including 2 FNG’s) gathered for a holiday themed ciabatta workout the likes of which haven’t been seen since… last time YHC did this in 2015.  It was cold.

For the uninitiated, Ciabatta refers to Tabata, a form of high-intensity interval training developed by a Japanese scientist. Each exercise is performed for 8 cycles of 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest.  Doing 8 different exercises / rounds this way is a full F3 Ciabatta cycle. Normally a timer or tabata app is used to mark time, but YHC used 20 second clips of holiday songs formed into an iTunes playlist and blasted through a car stereo.

Mosey to open space for COP:

  • SSH x 20 IC
  • Windmill x 10 IC
  • IW x 20 IC
  • Mountain climbers x 20 IC

Mosey to wall area between Firebirds and Cantina 1511 for the main event.

Music Notes

  • Kudos to Champagne for being the only PAX to make it to both the original Holiday Jukebox Edition in 2015 and version 2.0.  The man loves Christmas (or hates running).
  • T-claps to Thin Mint for making it out to 80’s Jukebox Edition last month and Holiday 2.0.  Some would say that is too much of a mediocre thing.
  • Voodoo’s voice was silky smooth while hitting the high notes during ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham!
  • Congratulations to Bunker for posting at his first bootcamp ever.  That was your first, right Bunker?
  • Goonie did a great job delivering some stand-up material during the awkward pauses when my iPhone would freeze up.  I know he’s been refining his set for a while and I think it’s finally ready for prime time.
  • Welcome Golden (John Schauer) and Couch (Jamie Rowe)! Just so you know, every workout has produciton value that is at least this high.  #KeepPosting
  • Thanks to the PAX for helping Q during Mary, Plankorama and Burpeerama
  • Thanks to Squid for taking us out
  • Thanks to Poptart for being Poptarded and for driving Squid

“Nah, he’s just yackin’ on a bone. [auwff] He got it up.”

While Swiss Miss is DR, yodeling and breathing in the crisp Alpine air, YHC’s got the keys to the Scout Hut (yes, it is heated on this 22° morning), so let’s see if we can’t get all limbered up with just 4 days ’til Christmas.  Speaking of days and Christmas, these 8 wily brogis didn’t need a full 12 Days of Christmas countdown, or anything gimmicky like that, to get their flexibility on (although a few of the Days’ “gifts” were sampled).

Limber Moleskine:

Great to see everyone this morning, and it was nice to post indoors on this chilly mornin’.

YHC first thought of trying to come up with a 12 Days of Christmas theme, but it just seemed too contrived.  So, you got a dancer, a couple of birds, and a couple trees.  And a lot of stretching lunges.  YHC doesn’t know about you all, but those stretches were felt, in a good way, for several hours thereafter.  We didn’t burn a lot of calories, but it feels like we did something on this active recovery day.  And, recovery is the key – it’s way too easy to continue pushing hard every day until something breaks.  Let’s hope this helps prevent that.

Today’s playlist was by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  Perhaps a little heavy/up-tempo for broga, but YHC was looking for some instrumental Christmas music and this fit the bill.

Sign up to Q.  Q’ing Gumby can be a bit intimidating, compared to a bootcamp, because most of us don’t have the flexibility we want nor do we feel that qualified, but it really isn’t that bad.  Swiss Miss and YHC each have a pretty good yoga book that we’re borrowing from heavily (90% of today’s #weinke was a combination of various series/flows from the book).  We’d be glad to loan you ours, and we’ve found a good online resource too (I know SM has used it already).  Or, you could follow one of our past weinkes.  A lot of options.  Basically, we’re all just following along the weinke and learning/practicing together.  And, you get to select the playlist!  Anywho, let us know if you have questions or need help.

If you’re traveling, be safe, and if you’re not traveling, be warm.  Either way, let’s keep our focus on the reason for this wonderful holiday season with family and friends – the birth of our Messiah!

Merry Christmas!

Frozen Gophers

17 men posted to the frosted plains of Death Valley on this holiday week. Rumor is that the DV AO is plagued by gophers and so we needed to chase it down. Here is how it happened

Mosey around the lot for latecomers (Floorslapper was later than that allowed for) and down the access path to the baseball fields for COP
SSH x 20
IW x20
Mtn Climbers x20
Merkins x10
Sometime during COP we picked up Floor Slapper and our FNG. FS wasn’t late, he was being hospitable to the newcomer…

Mosey to the top of the stairs for the gopher…
P1 runs the track
P2 runs to the baseball bleachers and does 10 burpees, 40 jump lunges and 20 flutters
Meet at the starting point for 10 hand slap merkins and flapjack
Repeat for ~25 minutes

Regroup and mosey to the grass by the bus lot for mary
LBC x 20
Dolly x 20
Freddie Mercury x 20
“Sherpa” x 10 (6 count exercise combining makhtar ndiaye and mountain climber)
Rosalita x 20

COT

Moleskine:
The gopher isn’t the most social of workouts (or maybe YHC isn’t the most social guy out there). So we spent a little extra time today in COT sharing what everyone wants for Christmas. YHC doesn’t remember all the requests but here are some of the highlights:

Smokey – the next Peyton Manning to enroll at UT soon
Semi Gloss – CMS to spring for heated seats in the Semi Gloss shack at DV
Puddin Pop – some colorful workout shirts because he’s putting the blue and gray away in ‘17
Fireman Ed – the freedom to wear tights without shorts to workouts
Retread – front row tickets to the Soap Box derby in his hometown of Akron, OH
Salt Lick – more pull-ups and less running at all workouts
Tiger Rag – Clemson national FB championship and a purple paw print for the hood of the Jeep
Floor Slapper – a watch that keeps time with atomic clock precision so he’s not late to workouts

If you’re still reading it might be good to know that that list above is a complete fabrication by YHC as an attempt to save what is otherwise a lack luster BB.

Always a privilege to lead.

Timekeeper – Legacy, Leadership Book Study, Take 2

I attempted launch this book study in July, but was called away on a project in Washington DC. I’m back and ready to try this again.

Timekeeper
Every Tuesday Starting Tuesday, January 3rd
Einstein Bagel Bros in Ballantyne
6:30am – 7:30am

Starting on Tuesday January 3rd, Timekeeper will be reading the book Legacy, 15 Lessons in Leadership by James Kerr. I have read the book in the past and it’s one of my favorites.

Summary:
Champions do extra.
They sweep the sheds.
They follow the spearhead
They keep a blue head.
They are good ancestors.

In Legacy, James Kerr goes deep into the heart of the World’s most successful sporting team, and revels 15 powerful and practical lessons for leadership and business. Legacy is a unique, inspiring handbook for leaders in all fields, and asks: What are the secrets of success – sustained success? How do you achieve world class standards, day after day, week after week, year after year? How do you handle pressure? How do you train to win at the highest level? What do you leave behind you after you’re gone?
What will be your legacy?

We will read 2 chapters per week and discuss how the 15 lessons in the book we can be applied to F3, work, our families and our faith. On Tuesday January 3rd we will discuss the book at a high level and the section called “The Challenge.” On January 10th we will cover chapters 1 and 2. You can buy the book on Amazon using this link:
