When I say “F”, you say “3”…….”F”, “3”, “F”, “3”.
What a day this turned out to be. After crying myself to sleep in the days running up to the game in fear of getting a severe a$$-spanking, it turns out I should never have doubted my fellow PAX.
When ESPN makes a show of the greatest sporting achievements in history, this will be right up there with the Miracle on Ice and how the NFL has somehow convinced the entire US population that it’s fun to watch. The soccer boys of F3 friggin’ tied the Charlotte Eagles!
Keep in mind, this is a team which currently sits comfortably atop of the South Atlantic Division of the PDL and went undefeated last year (one of the best leagues in the country!), and is composed of a number of players who literally won National Championships with their college last year, and the majority will have plans to turn full-time pro after college. There is NO WAY that a bunch of 30 & 40-somethings who work in banking/insurance/construction should touch these guys……but I guess that’s the power of comeraderie!
So, let’s get the excuses out the way….maybe their best players may have been in Georgia for an important game…..and they maybe didn’t play as hard as they could or should…..and they maybe thought the grass was too long….and they maybe thought the field was too small….and maybe we borrowed their reserve Goalkeeper….and maybe it was 100 degrees (Teddy’s warm up routine of literally just sitting the same spot for 25mins because it was too hot summed that one up). Blah blah blah, not one single iota of that matters. When you cross that white line, it’s game time, baby!
I’m not gonna lie, when Senor Chips rolled up without his boots, and had to wear his winkle-pickers for the start of the game, I was a little worried about what was about to happen, but the game started and try as they might the boys in (royal) blue could not break us down. Our tactics were simple. 10 of us work our clammy balls off chasing them around, then when we get it, hoof it up to Dollywood and let him do his thang against their 4-man defense. And what do you know, it worked….Coaching mastermind if you ask me!
Little did I know F3 had some true ballerz out there. The usual Busch, Grapejuice, and Mickey (even with his craft beer hangover) I knew were solid picks, along with recent FNG Brexit being a wrecking ball at the back, but the likes of Narc, Spang and Rest-stop who I’d not met yet were SUPERB. I think the Eagles were shocked too. And Sweeney Todd does enough selfless defensive running to count for 2 people, which is always a bonus.
So, to cut a long story short, we go 1-0 up (Dollywood) before having another disallowed moments later (Dollywood again, surprise surprise) – with the turncoat Bunny calling it offside…. We’re holding on, holding on, holding on, and then those slippery little buggers manage to score a beauty just before the end to make it 1-1. Full-time.
And this is where the reality of our achievement sunk in.
You see, the plan was that at the end of the game, we were going to combine teams and have a jolly old kickaround to celebrate the end of a fun day…you know shake hands, share smiles, try a fancy trick or two for giggles, entertain the crowd. Not a chance!! I wandered over to their bench to thank them and to hand out pinnies for the combo, and they made it pretty clear that they were not willing to end without a W under their belt – we had seriously ruffled some Eagle feathers (every pun intended). So on we went to Golden Goal – Sh1t had gotten real. The legendary Slimfast was throwing in tackles, Tubeless showing his touches of class, Kaiser and Probation (with one leg but sweet cleats!) were showing their experience to get us out of trouble on occasion, and Fletch was on a one-man mission to break the net. There’s only so long before youth and ability shines though, and on a breakaway late in the afternoon, their striker Tresor Mbuyu (2015 NCCAA DII National Championship Winner and Player of the Tournament by the way!!) tucked away a cool finish to save some blushes. Probably a fair result, with everyone leaving happy.
SO PROUD.
As we spoke about at the end though, the game was not just about playing some soccer, it was ultimately about F3 doing what it does, by showing leadership, setting examples, and offering ways to service others – one way we can do that is to help and promote the fantastic Eagles organization – so now we have a couple of action items to attend to:
November 1, from 6-8pm at Calvary Church.
A table sponsor is $450 – that allows 8 people to come – usually one guy buys the table bring his wife and 6 friends, or individually it’s $55 a plate. I want as many of us F3’ers there as possible, and spread the word in the gloom also please.
Let me know (HC only) if you would like a seat or perhaps group together for a full table – this is a great event for an even greater cause – I’ve seen first-hand the positive work these coaches do for the local youngsters – they are true gems of our community, but they need support!!
MASSIVE T-Claps to Dollywood, TML, Jake Berry, the YMCA and the entire Charlotte Eagles staff for all doing their bit towards making this happen.
Bodybag (607-483-0251)
P.S. Two words…URBAN EAGLES. Look it up.
P.P.S. November 1st, save the date.
The Thang…
Run a quick loop around the parking lot to warm up then we circle up.
SSH x 20 IC
Imperial Walkers x20 IC
Good enough to get started.
We headed over to the play ground for an explanation of the Pain Stations.
Each station was 1.5 minutes with a 30 second break to head to the next station.
Go through each station 2 times then head down to the soccer field for some sprints.
I cannot recall the exact sprints we competed, but it was something like this…
Across the field short length and back Recover with some Mary.
Run across the field then Bear Crawl back more Mary
Ran backwards across the field then sprint back and more Mary
Mosey over to the long end of the field for some more sprints with lots of Planks and extended counts in the 6 inch position.
The moleskin:
Really great crew out there today. I think 10 PAX is a good number for this workout easy to set-up the stations and good competition on the speed portion of the workout.
From the comments YHC received during the workout it was a smokefest for the shoulders. going straight from the battle ropes to the Merkins was horrendous. Although everyone pushed hard and got it done.
Per the usual Mario, General and One-Niner were smoking the sprints and Nard-Dog was right there with them. Great push fellas. Seeing you out there in front of YHC gave me more reason to push hard and get better.
Bunker took one of his 6 running days a week off to join us at Fat Camp. For a long distance guy he was pretty quick on the sprints and didn’t look to have to many problems with the gear (maybe he is just a soccer arm guy in disguise).
Over Head and Flint were out as usual and continue to push the gear hard and appeared to push right into the Pain Cave and come out the other side stronger. Great having you guys out there.
Argonaut is a beast with the gear and kept up well in the sprints even though he was suffering from some shin splints. Way to push through the pain. Hope you feel better soon.
This was YHC’s first time posting with Incoming. He seems to be a surly man that will push all the way through the workout. Thanks for posting at Fat Camp with me. Don’t be a stranger.
I was accused of yelling at the PAX too much (especially about Plank form). NO Sagging Asses and it is NOT Downward Dog. Just trying to do my best to make us all stronger. I am sure you all will pay me back with some satisfying mocking of my form in the near future.
As always it is a pleasure to lead these fine men in the gloom.

23 pax rolled in to Peak 51 to tackle the mountain of the moderate Thursday workout. Kilowatt got so energized he rolled out early, no worries, you got your monies worth. YHC pulled out one of his classic’s that he enjoys and hopes that the pax did also.
Mosey around the parking lot the long way round to loosen up a little, OOP (Oval of Pain):
SSH x 50 (had to cut it off at 50 since it’s a moderate workout)
IW x 20
Merkins x 10 (nice even, measured count for good form)
CDD’s x 20
Mountain Climbers x 20
LSS x 10
Partner up
Mosey to the track area where someone conveniently left toys laying all over the place with signs indicating what to do with them (adults don’t do unstructured play very well)
While partner 1 runs a lap of the track partner 2 does the station, flapjack and move to the next station, stations were:
Mountain Climbers
CDD’s
Calf Raises
Battle Rope
Jump Rope
Partner situp plate exchange (take a weight plate and pass it back and forth)
Kettle bell swimgs
Sandbag squats
Kettle Bell rows
Push Press (KB)
Medicine Ball toss or slam
Then mosey to the parking lot for some Mary:
Sid-The-Kid x 10 each way oyo
Flutter x 20
LBC’s x 20
Knee ups x 10 oyo
Dolly x 10
Freddy Mercury x 20
That rounds it out folks:
Some good effort out there, not much standing around from what YHC could see. Idea is to push yourself and your partner. Hopefully it was fun for all.
Strong takeout by Smokey, thanks brother!

Solid work on a humid morning. Buttermaker crushed the merkins. Jamboree put on an absolute clinic. He and Harley were about to lap the rest of us at the Church. Nice form from Jet Fuel on the air squats. It’s tough to have good form on those when your six foot seven. If the form police were out, they would have been impressed. Glad to see Bug Eater making an appearance after about a two or three year absence. Hope to see you again before 2019. Thanks for Puddin Pop and Good Hands for the opportunity to Q. Thanks to Seville for the take out.

Sweat-stained Moleskine:
Well, YHC completes another trip around the Sun on Saturday, and since he is DR on Saturday, the Meathead pax were treated to his birthday Q today. For the unselfish benefit of the pax, the usual treats of cake and ice cream were audibled to swings, snatches, and other high return efforts.
In the pretweet & disclaimer/pre-workout announcement, YHC advised we’d be focusing on high-reps today, and therefore, a lighter than usual kettlebell was recommended. Most pax found this to be helpful information. Brown revealed that a 50 pounder is his lightest bell, not because he is a beast (although he is), but because all of his lighter ones are on loan within the Area 51. Thankfully, enough bells were on hand that Brown was able to borrow/share a lighter one often enough to avoid herniation.
Speaking of disclaimer, today we welcomed Tae Bo as a site FNG. Strong work today, brother. Look forward to seeing you each week.
Witch Doctor was Larry Bird’ing throughout the Circuit work, which wasn’t surprising. Somewhere in the later rounds, he switched to a heavier bell and allowed the rest of us to catch up.
Surprising, most of the pax finished the Circuit at about the same time, despite it being an OYO routine. Of special note, when YHC flight-tested the workout last week, it took about 40 minutes. Today, it only took about 30 minutes, proof that #ISI and YHC’s breaks were too lengthy last week. The waiter carries did take some time, as they tend to do, especially on a long route (~200 yards), so only minimal spare time was left for Mary.
MAD has continued his girevik progression, upgrading bell size, solid form, etc. Good work, comrade (brother)!
Arena is also among the single bell crowd, slinging his 40# most of the morning, but eagerly borrowing WD’s 35#, when offered. #promove
Sanka quietly ground out the work all morning, no doubt enjoying the metcon and a simultaneous break from running.
Also noted, everyone, except YHC, hates TGU’s. More than burpees. As much as YHC hates burpees, this is mind-boggling. Burpees do offer some metcon benefit (they were designed to be a test of such, not an exercise – but, like Common Core, we now train to the test), so YHC included them today in the metcon-themed workout. But, an option of substituting one TGU for the 7 burpees was offered, and YHC was the only one to take the TGU option. Stunned, but unfazed, YHC cranked out his easy TGU’s in the middle of the playground while the pax did burpees. (Hmm, maybe YHC will substitute TGUs for burpees whenever they are called, and based on how often they are called in A51, proficiency is right around the corner…)
For his next Q (8/4), YHC is planning a 180 turn from today, with low reps/high weight, unless another thought comes along between now and then.
Oh, and Hops, just in case you posted today or read the backblast, Meathead planted its first shovel flag (SF) today! It felt great.
Alright, enough rambling…break is over, back on your heads!
Aye!
22 of South Charlotte’s (and Winston-Salem’s) strongest posted at Rebel Yell, only to find out that they would be paying tribute the greatest basketball player to come out of Wake Forest–Tim Duncan. (Yea-YHC admits that our rafters are not overflowing with retired jerseys.) The Big Fundamental retired from the Spurs this week after 19 years. Disclaimer given; off we went.
Warm-O-Rama:
Jog around the parking lot in what appeared to be a non-sense pattern. Actually ran in the shape of a Spur. The satellites saw it clearly.
– Imperial Walkers x 19
– Mountain Climbers x 19
– Low Slow Jump Squat x 19
– Tempo Merkin x 19
– Monkey Humpers x 19
The Thang:
Jog to starting point behind shopping center. In suicide pattern, run to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th speed bump, performing exercise at each one–every time you hit it (coming and going).
– #1 Carolina Dry Docks x 10 (we hit this station 9x total)
– #2 Squats x 10
– #3 LBCs x 10
– #4 Running with Scissors x 10 (each leg)
– #5 Wide Arm Merkins x 10 (duncan had a huge wing span)
– Add 1 burpee for a total of 251 reps.
Run length of shopping center, stopping at each speed bump (non-suicide pattern) and performing 5 good form squat burpees. MHs on your own until 6 arrives.
Mosey back to launch. On small hill, perform 7s with plank jacks and get-ups (1/6, 2/5, etc.). Total of 21 reps of each exercise. (#21)
Peoples Donkey Balls. Start in people’s chair. Perform 8 Donkey Kicks and immediately go into BTW. Perform 8 hip slappers. Recover to People’s Chair. Repeat series 2 more times.
Mary:
– Heels to Heaven x 19
– LBCs x 21
– Rosalita
– Russian, er, St. Croix Twists
– Elbow Plank

Moleskine:
The PAX absolutely loved paying tribute to Duncan, except McGee, who was not yet born when Duncan played at Wake and arrived late, missing the opening theme comments. Duncan by the numbers: 5: exercises in warm-o-rama + NBA championships…8: donkey kicks/hip slappers + triple-doubles…19: reps in warm up + years played in NBA…21: reps on hill 7’s + number worn entire career…251: reps on rack n’ stack suicides + number of playoff games for Duncan. Now you know. Aren’t you glad we didn’t try to hit his career dunks (835)?
PAX crushed the rack & stack, so YHC had to throw in the burpee run, with Big Fundamental squat burpees. Mumblechatter ensued, as this is opposite of how McGee does burpees (Shane Battier method of flopping every time). #NeverUnderestimateGoodForm
7’s went to small hill due to sprinklers running on big hill. Small hill equally wet. Sorry, but Duncan played in all conditions. #NoComplaints.
YHC thanks Starfish for journeying from Metro-land to post. Starfish also hails from the Dash and is also a Deacon (home to Wake Forest, by the way). Idea for People’s Donkey Balls with Hip Slaps came from Starfish. #CrowdPleaser. Those whose dental plans are not paid up chose to forego the hip slapping. #WiseMove
Welcome back for post #2 to Fahvra. He is fresh off his strong debut at The Maul, where he ran a blistering pace up the Murderhorn…so I’m told. Dude is strong and will challenge the strongest/fastest of us.
Welcome Pat Down (FNG Phil…also a Respect, to the surprise of many). From Florida, retired police, currently works for Dept. of Homeland Security. #KeepingUsSafe

15 men showed up in the gloom this morning for a tour of Anvil. We did accomplish the goal of moving around campus and not staying in any one place for too long. Unfortunately, a little over 2 miles later we ran out of time for the last stop at Northface, an Anvil staple, so you did not quite get your money’s worth today.

We were treated to some amusement first thing this morning while Tiger Rag tried to get over to the launch point but was blocked multiple times by cones roughly the same color as his Jeep. With the group (eventually) assembled and Van Pelt instructed to put on gloves to protect his delicate mitts, we were off. During the time bomb burpees someone mentioned that with the PAX in control of when we burpee, stalling for the entire workout was technically possible. Luckily, the PAX quickly realized that running in place for 45 minutes is just about the most mind-numbing thing imaginable and we made it around the circle in decent time. Crisis averted.
Definitely heard some nervous chatter about the buckets feeling a little weak/sketchy on the bottom. YHC had never used them for things other than pulling weeds, washing the car, etc. and did say a prayer that a bucket did not give way and send pavers showering down on some poor soul’s legs. Apparently, Lowe’s blue buckets < Home Depot orange buckets. The only other mumbling was that of Ickey Shuffle asking where the rest of the weight was while digging around for 80 lb kettlebells. Rock sets were uneventful aside from VP reminding YHC that 3 comes after 2 when messing up calling cadence.
The 7s of merkins/mountain climbers were a smoker (thanks, Metro). Some knees were seen around the circle but more than a few guys made it through in plank the whole time. Strong work, gentlemen. YHC’s voice was definitely heard cracking once or twice during the last few cadence calls. Note to self for next Q: less cadence, more breathing.
Thanks to Udder who saved YHC some embarrassment during COT by whipping out his phone when YHC realized his own was in the other lot with the buckets. And, thanks to Paper Jam for the pavers that filled our buckets today — they are safely back at Centurion where I found them and remain un-bloodied for the time being. T-claps to Lorax, Knight Rider and Lambo who stopped on their way out to help YHC load the heavy stuff up for departure (btw – meant to ask if it’s Lambo or Lambeau? Saw it this way in another BB and went with it.)
Mumblechatter was relatively low for Anvil today as everyone kept their heads down and put in some solid work. It was an honor to lead this morning. Lobsta Roll and McGee run a great workout at Anvil – if you haven’t been or it’s been a while since you visited, come check it out sometime. I believe Ickey is on Q next week so it’s sure to be a good one.

Breakdown of what happened – AKA Moleskin
so I got texts last night some asking for miles some asking for no running. The no running people didn’t show up nor did the running people so I decided to do a little bit of both. A mountain of mumble chatter this am mainly by Swiper and Alf who were commenting on the speed by which I was counting. Look guys we have a lot of things to cover, if you ain’t first you’re last.
During the mosey in Rain tree there was some comments about me trying to keep up with the “fast guys” at the front which would end up biting me in the rear later. Once we got to Windbluff I made the call for 11’s which in my head sounded like a great time but in practice it was not. Audible that after I got some dirty looks from a few guys who were not pleased with me.
Decided to do the Jack Web at the top of Windbluff which would have been great but completely forgot the count.
Lastly when running back I felt that I was holding back the #runners so I let them run fast. Square Root continues to be at the front every time along with the usual suspects.
Strawberry and PopTart (brothers from another Motha) flew past me with amazing speed as did Deep Dish and several others who will go nameless as I was too gassed to even think. Fireman Ed came smoking past me and explained that he likes to save up energy for the end.
Welcome FNG’s Blue Hose (mom brought him out) and Benny Hill (Lex Luthor brought him).
Thanks for Swiper for taking us out.
Our Brother from #F3ISOTOPE – Olive was there sharing the story of the toy drive this fall/winter in remembrance of his daughter. There are also some shirts for sale and they will be putting together a link and order forms. I have nominated Hairball to handle this for Area 51. Link below. Prayers for Olive and his family.
