Thought it was time to make boot camps great again and go back old school, back before Area 51 became a run heavy workout kind of place. Decided to pull a couple of the old original workouts from Anvil out and take a look. This reminder YHC of how different the boot camps use to look back 5-6 years ago. YHC figured, maybe it’s time to bring some of these back. YHC took the first 3 workouts and pulled together a compilation thanks to BA and Young Love – the original site Qs. Granted, YHC did stay away from the Young love special of 100 SSH IC – figure with Margo, Haze and Gummy, there would be a full blown mutiny.

Lots of great work out there and it was great to see some old faces that haven’t posted in a while – great to have you guys back out. The sand was as bad as YHC remembered it. It needs to get used more often. Heard several pax say they didn’t even know those sand courts were over there.

The hotbox lived up to its name with a nice round of She-Hate-Me – not sure where that name came from but its what the combo use to be called.

Ring of fire is always a crowd pleaser especially with 18 pax – not sure YHC has done one with that may pax before – but an audible seems like a smart idea. And sprint grinders are always a nice way to finish up.

Great solid work by everyone today, it looked like everyone was pushing it thru the entire workout. And as always, nice to hear mubblechatter – makes the workout more fun.

Thank you men for the opportunity to lead you thru the gloom this am. It’s an honor and a privilege.

Thanks Haze for the great takeout.

New 3rd F – meeting every other Wednesday from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Middle James Brewing in Pineville. Its called The Question – there is a new question each meeting to discuss and drive interesting conversation. See Champagne or Strawberry, the Q’s for more information.

That’s All.

Champagne Out.

Fellowship of the Hills

To celebrate my 99th Q (not a real number, but stating the number of times you Q seems to be the thing these days), I wanted to accomplish what I THINK was a Floater 1st and hit all 3 of our nastiest hills – Bad Idea, Bad Idea 2 (aka FU Hill), and the infamous original Keith Jong Hill. This was going to be a monumental task given the distance that needed to be covered while still allowing time for pain stations. However, after being challenged to have both mileage and hills, I finalized my weinke, assuming I would have to audible along the way.

DiCCS given, along with a warning that we were covering some miles and would need to work at a quick pace today.

Warmup

  • Mosey across Main St. to the skate park parking lot
  • 10 SSH IC
  • 10 Merkins IC
  • Calf Stretching
  • 10 Low Slow Squats IC

The Thang

  • Mosey to Hill 1 – Bad Idea 2 (FU Hill) for a modified triple nickel
    • 10 squats at each end + 5 merkins at the 1/2 way point each direction
    • 5 rounds
    • Audible # 1 – Called recovery after the 1st batch of Gazelles completed 5 rounds. Not too sure calling this short upset too many guys
  • Mosey to Hill 2 – Bad Idea for another modified triple nickel
    • 10 jump squats at the top + 10 Romanian deadlifts (5 each leg) at the bottom + 5 Mike Tysons in the middle
    • 5 rounds – This immediately got the chatter flowing with complaints about time
    • Audible # 2 – Changed to 1.5 rounds – I immediately knew we did not have time for all 5 rounds, but I secretly wanted to hear the complaining and throw a mental jab to an already tired PAX
  • Mosey to Hill 3 – Keith Jong Hill for some quick suicides. This one seemed to confuse and concern the PAX – “Wait, we’re doing another hill?” – Answer = Heck Yes!!!
    • Start at the bottom of the hill / Sprint to the stop sign / Run Back to the Start / Sprint to the top (Laundry Mat)
    • Audible #3 – I originally called out for burpees at the bottom and merkins at the stop sign and top, but time was just not on our side – Why can’t Floater be an hour????
  • Jail break to Start for all 3 hills, just shy of 3.5 miles (my watch had 3.47), in exactly 45 min!

Moleskin

  • A few observations:
  • Brutus was flying today, leading the pack most of the way
  • Deflated, knee braces and all, was in the font all day as well
  • Carb Load continues to impress, passing me on the 1st hill which earned him some words of ‘encouragement and support’ from me…
  • Twinkle Toes was another flyer today. He’s pretty quiet, so you need to watch for him out there
  • Several others were not in the front, but were definitely giving it all they had – kudos to you (search your feelings and you’ll know who you are)

Announcements

  • Diesel official kick off tomorrow – 0.0 miles
  • Let’s all take an example from Botham Jean’s brother who forgave and hugged former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, who had been convicted of murder in Jean’s death. An amazing example we can all learn from (https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/03/us/botham-jean-amber-guyger-trial-wrap/index.html ) – Thanks for sharing this Zin!
  • Good luck to everyone participating in various races this weekend. Make Waxhaw proud men!

Chesticles Roasting on Spackler’s Knoll

Pax – Spackler, Dollywood, Header, Chin Music, Stone Cold Steve Austin

You remember the feeling when you showed up to school and forgot you had a test? Or when you got to about 10am the day of your wife’s bday and realized you forgot to wish her one? Or even better, that one time (or in Gloss’ case multiple times) when you felt you could easily let out that soothing fart and whelp….there goes the shart? Yeah me neither. However, I do know (now) how it feels to show up to Q and upon seeing (relatively few) pax and immediately realizing I was going to be the slowest and most out of shape gentleman of the crew. Perfect. Great feeling. Fantastic.

Gave zero disclaimer. Take that. These guys didn’t need it. They are all gentlemen. Oh and did I mention zero warm up as well? Yep.

Mosey towards Spackler’s Knoll with 15 merkins at each speedbump (5). At the bottom of Spackler’s Knoll it was decided we would do the half pipe x 3. 20 merkins at top of Knoll and 20 squats at other end. 5 burpees or 10 merkins at bottom each time. It was GLORIOUS.

Head back to AO with multiple stops for El Stomache’ stuff and not to forget the 15 merkins again at each speedbump (5).

We finished with some mas Stomache’.

Total mileage – 3.55 miles Total Merkins – ~210

Solid Augtober out there this morning. Look I’m no genius (shocker) but I got the street skills to know that upon arrival it was going to be a moist one.

Pulled up to some of the usual DV suspects – hoped for a few more so I could strategically hide throughout the work out but to no avail. Those missing probably went to that AARP workout this morning and are still itching the sand from their anuses. I said it.

It was also the kind of crew where I knew my normal potty mouth was going to be really frowned upon sooooooooooo the thought was let’s just run a lot so I get so tired I can’t talk. Pretty much worked.

All the others were chatty Cathy’s. Header and Chin were talking about dinner and sponge cakes, probably because it is Chin’s 42 Bday today. I’m more of an after dinner cocktail and #clickclick kind of lad over dessert but nobody asked me (and I couldn’t talk anyway). DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT think you can just walk up to Dollywood at a wedding and think he wants to talk to you just because your M’s are friends. Shocked to find that out but evidently he is some kind of reception Ninja. Be warned. Stone Cold was lamenting about soon to be paying college tuition not to mention the costs of homecoming, yearbooks, dresses, etc. Nothing of which I had any advice for….sorry pal – I see a 70’s jeep for sale in the near future.

Thanks to me, I took us out in prayer for the first time in years. And I do apologize for not asking God to spare us the bad luck today when that black cat jumped out of the woods like a damn black Panther and crossed the road in front of us at the end of the workout. Hail Mary full of Grace…………

Happy Bday to Chin Music.

Chiseled 1 Year Anniversary

14 Pax gathered to celebrate the 1 Year Anniversary of the CHISELED, the O.G. of gear/weight AO’s in Waxhaw. The 3 site Q’s shared Q responsibilites today, each ensure a particular muscle group was properly beat down. Here’s how it went:

The Thang

Ye Old Moleskin

Thanks to all who came out to support the 1 year anniversary of Chiseled. While there may not be a lot of running at this AO, it doesn’t mean you can’t get good cardio in and break a sweat, especially if you are pushing yourself the entire time. Most of us were dry heaving at some point during Banjo’s set and drenched in sweat, it was a mini IPC. Gear/weights allow you to isolate some muscles, build some definition that body weight workouts might not get to. The beauty of the AO is that you get to pick the weight that is most comfortable to you (most of the time) and go all out, and most times performing as many reps as you can – only you vs you –no rep targets–no need for fuzzy counting–practice good form and push yourself — Set your own rep targets / weight size and improve weekly. Hope to see more of you out in the gloom at Chiseled.

Stair Masters of the Universe

WOD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olZUnp04JwA
Run to parking deck (the less crowded/cleaner one)
Rd#1 – Stairway burpee to top
Run down ramps
Rd#2 – Skip hop (bound every other step) to the top
Run down ramps
Rd#3 – Grapevine up steps (alternate lead leg each flight) to the top
Run down the ramp
Rd#4 – Single-leg hops (alternate lead leg each flight) to the top
Run down the ramps
Rd#5 Bounding sprints, jump 3 – 4 steps at a time and sprint to the top
Run down the ramps
Repeat from the beginning as many rounds and possible

After a few rounds of running down the ramps in between sets, we opts to descend the steps after each set and run the ramps after the complete circuit. This was a much better balance of stairs to ramps. Still got 3 miles.

Nine Inch Nail-skine
I recently ran my first/only ultramarathon. I learned many things about myself on that trail and mountain. Most importantly, I learned to not give up. Next I learned my training was out of balance. I spent a lot of time running far, but not enough time building leg strength. If I were ever to run that course again, I will spend more time doing hill repeats, stair climbs, squats and stair work.

No lolligagers out there today. Out front was Alf, and Job, Turkey Leg and Squid not far behind. Pitchfork is back, posting 2 of the last 3 days.

Coat Drive is on. Bring your new and used coats to any AO site Q.

Happy Hawktober

After a mediocre disclaimer, interrupted by Hannibal informing me it wasn’t 0530 yet and further interrupted by Puddin’ Pop’s grammatical correction #cobains, the Hawks Nest pax rang in Hawktober with a “well-lit” trek around the plush environs of Charlotte Latin.

First we headed up to the far upper lot beyond the athletic fields along Providence Road…one of the quippy pax muttering something to YHC about Hawks Nest not being a running workout. 1/4 mile warmup run? Seriously? How’s that blue pill taste? Our FNG “Gaudi” wasn’t bellyaching. Pretty sure the complaining pax was Strawberry…though not sure.

The Thang was something akin to the following:

COP with H-R merkins, Slow Squats, Flutters, Shoulder Taps — all to a rep count of 22. (Marge later guessed the random # to be Wake Forest’s current football ranking. Hey…can you blame a guy for celebrating something that happens once every 11 years?)

Mosey over to the pavilion for some wall work including Wallthar N’Djaiye, Peoples’ Chair with some overhead press. Gloss complained at this point that the 22# Walthar’s was “aggressive”. What?!!! Did that mean he actually completed the called exercise? Not likely.

We then ran down to the bridge, grabbing a rock along the way for some more wall work – more Wallthar N’Djaiye’s and overhead press with the rock this time. Sprockets claimed the bridge wall was easier to grip on the Wallthar’s than the pavilion..not sure but his white-collar hands could have been roughed up from the previous sets.

We then moseyed up around the track to the gym building for some partner work. P1 does jump ups on the statue base or benches while P2 runs down the hill to the edge of the track and back. Flapjack. 2 rounds of this. Lewinsky got the bellyache award for this one — complaining that the lighting from the statue was burning his retinas…or something like that.

We then ran past the new building and down to lot below for some Broad Jump Burpees, lunge walks, backward lunge walks and bear crawls.

We then headed down to the lot at the base of the SwimMac complex for double-nickels – 5 Squats at bottom, run up/down the hill x5. Somebody complained at this point about fear of chemicals on the real grass….oh the humanity.

Back to the launch lot at this point for 6 MoM consisting of slow flutter, Freddy Mercury..can’t remember what else.

Some more Moleskine:

Google Antoni Gaudi for more information on our FNG’s namesake. F3Area51’s “Gaudi” works for a builder, Edifice, who builds lots of churches. Can also ask Marge who just got back from two weeks with his M. in Spain. Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is the most amazing building I’ve ever seen.

Most of the pax putting in some hard work. Others mailed it in. Yet others took the DPP (Daily Purple Pill).

Announcements:

Bring coats (gently used) for men, women & children. Chelms is spearheading a coat drive for West Side Ministries. I’m collecting on behalf of Hawks Nest; most other A51 AO’s also collecting. Give some coats away. You don’t need them all. There’s enough mini-storage in America to fit every American man, woman and child inside. Think we got an excess problem here?

COTS – see Strawberry for more information. Breakfast every Sunday morning served to the homeless on Tryon Street. Serve. and bring your M and 2.0’s with you.

3rd F (every other Wednesday – next one is 10/9) – “The Question” – not a bible study, rather, a look at the big questions of life. 5:30p to 6:30p.

Old School Raintree Hills Suckfest

Some things in life never change.  Sun rises.  Sun sets.  Running up Four Mile Creek is as much fun as being on the losing end of a game of Roshambo.  So 10 men posted up this morning for the first day of October and a cool morning of running – 72 degrees and high humidity.

Warmup:  Run over through the campus maze and to the base of Whitehorn.  Run down 2 streets, back one, 5 jump squats.  Repeat to flashing light.

The Thang:  Triple Nickle up 4 Mile Creek.  5 8-count body builders at the top.  5 Romanian Deadlifts (each leg) at the bottom.

Run back to Raintree Lane and head home.

Moleskine

Purple Haze loves that 4 Mile Creek hill.  He complains a lot to make you think he thinks its awful, but he loves it.  Amber made the valiant effort to keep Purell company.   He learned that was not advisable and is likely still trying to catch his breath.  Prohibition seems to like Swift.  I am not sure how good that workout is, Pro still isn’t faster than Purell.   Taco Stand 20% of his ultra mileage from that Table Rock race, but probably only 2% of the climb.  I think he was OK with that.  Ironsides was grinding all morning as was Retread.  Somehow we lost One Eye while we stayed on one road.  Good thing Purell found him.  Turkey Leg was cruising up near the front but work keeps getting in the way and he had to leave early.

I will take it from the complaints that you all greatly appreciated this mornings workout.  You are very welcome.

Bring Coats for Chelms and sign up for Church on the Street.

A Glutton For Punishment

A rarity for me, I’m writing the backblast a day in advance. I’ve got to rush out to Raleigh early tomorrow (today) so there won’t be much time to reminisce or ridicule. For those that enjoy my hour long diatribes, sorry for the brevity. For the other 120 of you, your welcome for my one short and to the point backblast.

The title of today’s backblast comes from the fact that I am returning from a 3 day mini-vacation that saw lots of pool lounging, beer drinking, kid throwing, marco polo playing, eat everything in site three day blowout. Unfortunately, I pay for it today. 18 guys decided to join me.

WARM UP

Mosey around the front of the school towards the basketball court. Planned for half mile mosey, arrive to find its only .4. Circle up for:

Jimmy Dugans

15 Mountain Climbers

15 Peter Parkers

15 Parker Peters

10 Atomic Merkins

Potato Pickers (Move to the top and switch to Jimmy Dugans. Out of breath, need a quick breather without counting.)

THE THANG

Partner up. Partner 1 runs to the play ground for 10 jumping pull ups. Partner 2 stays on the court for 15 slow merkins. Partner 1 returns to court to tag out. Repeat until everyone has completed 50 jumping pull ups and 75 merkins.

Mosey to small hill behind the school. 10 dry docks on top, bear crawl down the hill, 10 dry docks at the bottom, craw bear up the hill, 10 dry docks, bear crawl down, 10 dry docks, crawl bear up, 10 dry docks. 50 dry docks total. (Allow 10 secounds to allow pax enough time to complain). Warned that we may modify this. Found that it hurt something fearce, but everyone pushed through and finished. I felt like Shake was staring daggers though me when we were done.

Audible (for more work as we were running ahead of time). Wall sit for wall slaps (above head and at the hips). 25 on your own. Posse started counting them. We still have time, lets do it again except with Posse counting – because his voice sounded so sweet the first time.

Mosey back to the front parking lot. 4 5 corners using the outside lanes. Do exercises on the out, run back to start on the return. The run will equal just shy of a mile (.96 to be exact – yes I did the math). Corners are:

5 Burpee tuck jumps

10 Dry Docks (sorry).

15 Jump Squats

20 Merkins

25 LBC’s in cadence

I’m assuming this will take us until the end, but if it doesn’t, there will be some form of beat the Q sprints or abs to finish us out. And….it didnt. Mosey to the cars for 30 gas pumpers…..TIME!

MOLESKIN

Obligatory everyone worked hard, great group of guys goes here. I was going to leave it at that, but there were a few that stood out today.

Posse absolutely killed the 5 corners. Dude was out front with the gazells the entire time. Noticeable weight drop the last few weeks. Whatever your doing, its working. Keep it up.

Smithers consistently out in front of me during 5 corners as well. Pushing hard today.

Shake the ever consummate form professional. I wish I could video his merkin form and study it to improve upon mine.

Dough Boy and I were each other rabbits today. I’d pass him running and he would pass me at the stations. Neither one of us ever really gaining an edge on the other one. Thanks for the push – whether you realized it or not.

Special shout out to Rubbermaid. I arrived early to find out that (probably to no surprise to those that know him) Rubbermaid stepped up to the call for help yesterday for Chastain’s neighbor. If there is ever a call for help, that guy drops what he’s doing to lend a hand. Really proud of being in a group with you Rubbermaid. For those at COT, my prayer was partly directed at me but also others. We can always do more. Rubbermaid is that example.

“Why Are We Even Doing This…” – Jerry Seinfeld S3, E17

Just beautiful to see Posse this morning show support for my 29th Q! He has always been a big fan of my counting and my workouts so it’s only a matter time before he gets my named tattooed on him inside of a really muscle-y looking heart. Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it…

Yesterday I was pondering if I could find the strength to post though the pain to just do some chores around the house, none the less post at an actual workout. Yet again the joke was on me because I stupidly signed up to Q Asylum. I don’t blame the site for my pain and solely the boys in Greenville, SC for the ever awful IronPax Challenge. So glad it’s over!

Any who, DiCCs given….let’s sorely get it!

So what does my title for this BB even mean? Click this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebpH9Mc8xTU

Classic Jerry Seinfeld but he’s right. Some of us are posting each morning to avoid being fat bastards and some are just posting to help get themselves out of bed each morning so they feel like they are contributing to society in some way. Which is maybe the same things. Regardless of the reason it’s great to set some big, hairy and audacious goals! Weight loss, calorie intake or number of days a week you post are all great goals in the beginning. You either achieve those goals or don’t, pretty simple and private goals for most. Do they work? Who’s holding you accountable? Are you circling the wagons week over week letting yourself down?

What if you teamed of up with a like framed pal and set a collective team goal for a 5k, the Vagabond or a Spartan Race? This isn’t something you have to do but public accountability is a very simple, yet aggressive motivation tool. Some friendly competition doesn’t hurt either! Because what are we all doing this for anyways but then to better ourselves?

Push harder, dig deeper and reap new rewards. It’s not too late to sign up for this weekend’s Susan G. Komen 5k with Speed for Need! The Vagabond is on Nov 9th, it’s time to get some new mileage goals hitting the Carolina Thread trail running Wednesday mornings! Another Spartan Race in Spartanburg, SC on Nov 23 so you might as well sign up for the F3 Waxhaw Challenge Channel as we ramp up to start a pull-up/push-up challenge tomorrow!! The IronPax Challenge has passed for now but the battle we push through every morning is still ever present. Let’s go!

Thanks to Transporter for sharing his story for the Hope Challenge and thanks to Damascus for taking us out.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Susan G Komen 5k this Saturday! Talk to Rubbermaid or Damascus for more info
  • Today ends the official Hope Challenge and thanks to Swimmers for taking the lead here. A few men stepped up and shared their story of struggle and growth. The fight never stops and no one is alone, if you need something – say something. If you see a brother struggling, speak up yourself or grab a brother you trust to help.
  • Christ’s Closet needs help! Two opportunities:
Dana will be asking people to volunteer sometime at the donation house to help sort all the clothes we collected at Launchvergence. They were there this weekend and need way more bodies to help! Stay tuned…
Shop Dawg and Team have a big event in West Charlotte on Nov 9th. More details to come but those looking to pass on the Vagabond, this is 2.0 friendly and a great way to spend a Saturday!
