Black Diamond @ the Pond & Cubs win the World Series!!

Black Diamond @ the Pond & Cubs win the World Series!!

The Chicago Cubs are WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!  For the first time in 108 years, they’re the CHAMPS!  YHC stayed up till 1am watching the game and it was unbelievable.  Game 7 was a complete rollercoaster of emotions; thrilling, nerve-racking, excited, worried and then over joyed!  Watching the Cubs celebration parade going on in Chicago right now and it’s NUTS.  Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country (literally, non-stop stories of people driving hundreds of miles to see this) flocked to Chicago for the parade.  I really wish I was there to experience it.

Back to the Black Diamond.  YHC poorly chose Thursday 11/3 for the workout and ended up functioning on less then 3 hours of sleep.  4 other brave PAX showed up for what would be 60+ (yes it ran long) minutes of hard work.

THE THANG:

  • No FNG’s = No disclaimer so off we went
  • Mosey to the pond and run a lap clockwise to the workout sections on the gravel trail.
  • Exercise 1: Jacob’s Ladder (10/1, 9/2, etc)
    • Spring to each station
    • 10 pullups, 10 leg raises, 1 dip
  • Exercise 2: Circuit Training
    • Using your choice of color band and perform the following
      • 20 Curls
      • 10 Overhead presses
      • 10 Lateral Raises
      • 10 Chest flys
    • Lap around the pond
    • Performed 2 circuits OYO then 3rd round perform lap as Indian Run
  • Exercise 3: Deck of Cards
    • Special Instructions: For Spades anything less than 5, add 10 to the #.  2=12, 3=13, etc.
    • Special Instrctions part 2: Jack = 12, Queen = 15, King = 20, Ace = 25, Joker = Lap
    • Hearts – Merkins
    • Diamonds – Burpees
    • Spade – American Hammer (double count, ie L, R = 1)
    • Club – Squat
  • Mosey back for COT.  General with the take out.

MOLESKIN:

As always, appreciate the support of the PAX who showed.  Fallout and myself were functioning on a bit less sleep than everyone else but regardless, all showed up and gave a great effort this morning.  Hitting the Ace for Buprees and Merkins really sucked but this veteran group busted right through it!  The jury is out on total calories burned.  Fire Hazard’s (w/out the heart strap) watch was around 600, Mario’s (w/ heart strap) was at 800 but he also modified several Deck of Cards exercises.  I’ll go with around 900 or so.

  • Fallout: Has been MIA for awhile but great to have him show and put forth a solid effort this morning.  Definitely appreciate the push during all the exercises.  Really great work.
  • General: Performed as expected.  Pushed hard in every exercise.  Worked through the Deck of Card and the 25 burpees like a champ.
  • Fire Hazard: Excellent work especially dealing with a sore hamstring/ass. Really hustled and executed on Exercise 1 and the Deck of Cards.
  • Mario: Despite also dealing with an injury (shoulder or tricep? still TBD) great work.  You can always be counted on to push during all exercises and thankful for your effort with the bad wing.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Sign up for the Christmas Party.  Seriously.  What are you waiting for?

Turkey Bowl training started today

22 PAX got after it at CCHS this am – here’s what we did

The thang:

Jog down to practice field for COP – SSH, Merkins, Makhtar n’Diayes, diamonds and Freddie Mercury.

Partner up for:

  1. Partner 1 crawls under planking partner 2 five times (?? – don’t remember what they are called)- Flapjack and then rinse and repeat
  2. Leg throw downs, flapjack, and then rinse and repeat

Head up to level 4 of parking deck for Mermaid’s favorite set (non-musical although PAX were ready for some head banging near the end to divert attention from the suck).   Run down the stairs, broad jumps between the two culverts on the driveway, run around field and then 5 burpees, run to other corner for 5 hand release merkins, bear crawl down the side, run the ramps back up to level 4 and then do 10 squat jumps.  Rinse and repeat two more times.

Head down to level 1 and find your partner.   Partner 1 does called exercise while partner 2 sprints up and back the deck.    4 rounds – LBC, dolly, flutter, and American hammer or knee ups

Wall sit for a few minutes and then mosey back to parking lot.   FInish with 30 seconds of burpees.

Naked moleskin:
Big crowd this am so I’ll keep announcing a “mystery Q” each week to drive attendance.   Hopefully the PAX was not disappointed.  Mermaid sent me a tweet asking if he could take over for Thin Mint (on IR -get well fast brother) but alas I was already dialed in.  Next best (worst) thing was running one of his favorite routes.

Tool bag showed up for 2nd F3 workout.  Welcome brother and come back next week (to Centurion – some other AO before them would be good idea #getstrongerandfaster).

Cobains to Driver for nominating him to coach the Centurion team in the Turkey bowl without any advance warning.  I figured an ex CCHS football player should lead the Centurion team.    Also, thought maybe he could hook us up with Elijah Hood #ringer.

Dear Abbey must be working from the beer taverns less – he was out front during the circuits with Mermaid right there with him.   Looked like they may have skipped jump squats but I’ll review the tape.  YHC was not feeling it this am due to poor sleep and a pre-run (lame excuses)

Only three for the pre-run. Three old men at that.   Time to start ramping up the training for Joe Davis so we can dominate all the other F3 AO’s (at least on an age adjusted basis).

Pretty sure Abacus needs some advice on his form as he looked like a woman giving birth while doing the dollies – legs are supposed to be straight.

Announcements:

Turkey Bowl – Check web site and twitter for more details but it will be Thanksgiving day.   It’s the best way to earn that third helping of turkey.

Christmas Party December 2 at Firethorn Country Club – sign up and pay (or just pay).  I think Ty Webb is making a guest appearance (we need an FNG before 12/2 so we can name him that and force him to attend).

Sign up for Joe Davies Memorial run.  It is a great race for a great cause.

Rocking The Anger

Originally, this was supposed to be Viper’s Q. Then I sort of stuck him with my three daughters (Viper is my Dad for the unknowing) so he wisely backed away leaving this one to me. And I pull in for the pre-run and Kiefer asks if I saw the sign saying Park was reserved and closed to public. Nope. I didn’t see that. Hmmmmm. So my late Q now needs a new Weinke as my plan is shot as I’m worried if we leave the park, we might get towed. Fortunately I have a pre-run to figure it out.

Pre-Run with Kiefer. It was pretty much all uphill.

COP

Mosey to the covered tables.
Dips x 20
Step Ups each leg x20
Squats x 20

Mosey to Hotdog Hill on the steepest side for a different sort of 7s:
Backwards run up Hotdog Hill, Bombjacks x7, Run back down
Backwards run up Hotdog Hill, Bombjacks x6, Run back down
…..
Backwards run up Hotdog Hill, Bombjacks x1, Run back down

There was complaining and maybe some anger. I encouraged or mocked. One of those two. It was great either way

Mosey to the gravel loop around the park.

10 lunges, 10 seconds of running. Repeato around the loop until we get to the bridge.

Once to the bridge, go grab a rock. Make it one your wife would be proud of. Carry your rock to the field.
5 exercises, 20 reps of each exercise, after each exercise run to the pole and back.
Exercises: Curls, Triceps, Squat Thrusts, Flutter Press, Upgraded Skull Crushers (Bring your knees up to almost meet the rock lifting from the ground above your face – because safety first of course).

Repeato with 15 reps each exercise
Repeato with 10 reps each exercise

Then we held our rocks in front of us for a GJ 20 count. Starmount criticized the slowing down of my cadence. Just doing what I can to make it burn Brother.

Mosey to the cement pavilion area

Run up and down steps 5 times each

The People’s Chair with back against the bar with 100 air presses

COP
Dolly IC x20
Rosalita IC en Espanol x21 (mostly to see how bad you were on 20 in Spanish)
Flutters IC x20

Done!

– Smallish crowd but we got work done.
– Starmount got to experience his first bit of backwards uphill running. The belief is it’s really good for you. No clue if that’s true but any steep hill needs to be run up…backwards. Just seems right at this point.
– I think the sign about reserved was a lie. Still, it was wise to hang around just in case.
– Kiefer and Starmount actually met a year ago. And Kiefer tried to EH Starmount then. Only took a year to make it happen. #results
– Nice to get some rock usage in. I’d been eyeing them for the first few weeks. They will be used again. Just too tempting.

Thanks for letting me lead

Gearish

HB was a late cancellation. CT probably won’t check his phone until Friday morning while he’s deciding whether or not to post so I better claim it. I have an idea but it will be gearish at best. Oh well, HB’s fault really. I won’t remember most of this right but at this point, I’m just posting this BackBlast to mock HB further so it really doesn’t matter.

Mosey to the grass lot to stay within sight of the parking lot which was good since Bernanke was on his normal time. What time does the 5:30 AM workout start?

SSH IC x30
IW IC x20

Mosey to the back of the school where due to my great diligence, the tires were already out and ready for us. That’s #Q-winning already

Here’s the deal: A guy on each tire while the remaining guys do the called exercise. 5 flips down and 5 flips back. All reps must be completed even if the tire guys get back. After all guys have flipped the tires, we do a recovery run.

Round 1: 10 Burpees, 20 Merkins, 20 CDDs. Recovery Run down to the Road and back
Round 2: 30 LBCs, 30 Leg Lifts, 30 Squats. Recovery Run to Stop Sign. At some point in this round, Madison’s back died. Literally died. Sorry about that Bro. And then Hoffa shows up. Normal UC weirdness
Round 3: 40 Flutters, 40 Rosalitas, 40 Dollies. Recovery Run to Light Pole past the Stop Sign from Round 2
Round 4: 10 Burpees each time.

Burpees for the rest of the guys while Bernanke and YHC put up the tires (volunteerism rocks).

We have time. More time than I planned actually. Tables are gearish, right?

Round 1: Dips/Derkins/Step Up each leg x 20
Repeato

Still a little bit of time left so I’ll just ad lib with the gear known as a wall:
A rather long sit on the wall given most of the anti-Y-Chromosomers were basically leaning against it.

DONE!

COT
YHC prayed for HB/DTs new job starts, Paige’s visit to Duke, etc.

Moleskine
– So, originally Overdrive was a boot camp. HB wanted gear. CT went missing. I decided to go old school with this one. Apparently HB is a little angry over it. Can only imagine his anger over a BB almost a week late. #keithBangry
– Bernanke arrived…finally. Hoffa arrived eventually. HB arrived never.
– Someone suggested we lay hands on Madison’s back. Actually, no they didn’t. Anyways, I was too busy celebrating my kill. Never seen gear kill someone. In all seriousness, hope your back gets better. Actually, by the time you read this, it’ll probably be healed.
– It was weird behind the school. People walking through our zone. Food vendors driving through. Madison doing some weird stretching.
– So, I may have a liberal definition of gear. It was gearish. Similar to other liberal lies such as none of Hillary’s emails had Confidential info. Nevertheless, this workout was Yuge! Just Yuge!

Thanks for letting me lead and entertain you.

Pre-blast: Day Zero takes over The Rock starting this weekend

OK, it’s more of a merger of equals. But don’t let Radar hear me say that out loud.

Starting this Saturday, Day Zero and The Rock will converge for the foreseeable future, meeting at The Rock’s standard AO at 0700. Expect a rock-solid beatdown that’s acceptable to men of Day Zero’s “high intensity” pedigree.

Esteemed elder statesman Hops will lead the charge this Saturday and set the bar high. Be sure to stretch out.

Thanks Flipper and Gummy for having us.

Sweeper Sleeper

HB mile to get loose

COP:
– SSH (25)
– Imperial Walker (20)
– Windmill (15)
– Merkins (10)
– Wide arm merkins (15)

The Thang:

Easy run down the street
Lunge walk a bit (lots of grumbling about disadvantaged short guys)
Inchworm with Bear Crawl

Karaoke Hill Drill:
Top of hill – Squats
Bottom of hill  – Flutters
Karaoke right across soccer field – LBCs
Karaoke left back – Flutters
Backwards up the hill – start over
Repeat multiple times with reps increasing each time (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35)
Switched Karaokes to Shuffles and then to Panther DB Backpedal

Mosey to the pavilion for some upper body work
Derkins, Dips, and CDDs (3 rounds at 10 reps, 15 reps, and then 10 reps)

Mosey back to parking lot for some Mary
* Shovel flag fail noticed so 10 Burpees OYO
Rosalita with whip (21 – because the Q is Spanish challenged)
Protractor – 2 rounds of angle calls by the Pax

Moleskin:
There must have been a few Halloween hangovers based on the late trickling in of some of the Pax.  Q fail in not requiring burpees upon each tardy arrival…next time.  Glad to see Hoffa out again (hope to see him at the start of the next workout 🙂 and Happy – remember him?  Kudos to HB for coming out after his first day on the new job and after getting nabbed by a soccer net last time out.  Good work by all with Shep showing impressive speed through the Karaoke Hill work.  CT had some impressive somersaults going at the bottom of the hill transitioning into his flutters.  One of the Pax had some issues (shortcutting runs, confused karaokes and attempted Q-jack at the end) but I won’t name names.  Lots of good chatter throughout so I clearly need to step up the intensity level.  Continued prayers for Paige, The Count’s Mom and Mother-in-law, and Happy’s Dad.  Thanks for the opportunity to lead this morning.

Sixteen Sallys…

Posted on Behalf of Smokey
The only other time I have ever been called Sally was on a golf course when I left a putt
short. However, this morning sixteen PAX donned the name proudly.
At precisely 5:30am we mosied to one of the back parking lots for a quick disclaimer,
twenty side straddle hops, twenty (Nashville) good mornings, and twenty imperial
walkers.
Another mosey led us across the street to a long rail on the side of the bank parking lot.
After a small technical difficulty, Moby’s song Flower (aka, Bring Sally Up) began to
play and supine pull-ups ensued.
Back to the parking lot for some good ole fashioned suicides. The first commenced with
fifteen hand release merkins at each light pole. For the second we did twenty LBC’s at
each light pole. Lastly, (with a groan) five burpees were performed at each stop.
Next, we traveled to the back parking lot where a lap with three rotation spots was
established. For the first lap we did, twenty-five LBC at the beginning, twenty merkins at
the end of the parking lot and twenty step ups. On the second lap, we rinsed and repeated
with the substitution of dips for step ups.
With just a few minutes left, over to the small track we went. A ladder of three down to
one pull-ups with a lap in between each.
On our way back to the cars, two stints of wall sits with fifty hand raises were performed
while Slim Fast sang All In All, Just Another Brick In The Wall…..
Back at the parking lot, we tried to kick over the wall with fifteen donkey kicks to no
avail. So, we showed it who was boss by finishing with BTW

Hand Release Merkin Day

Posted on behalf of Queen.

Despite an extra innings, rain delayed World Series Game 7, we still had 13 esteemed gentlemen show up on a foggy morning at Hydra. Here is how it went:
Warm Up
– SSH
– IW
– Slow Squat
– Slow Merkin
Karaoke for 40 yards on the field, both sides
3 laps around the school and either 30 regular pullups or 50 Supine pull ups
To the bleachers for 11’s dips and squats
To the football field: 50 yards of walking lunges, jog 50 yards, 20 LBC’s, 50 yards of walking lunges and jog 50 yards.
Hand release merkins: 12, run 50 yards, 11 , run 50 yards, 10, etc
To the school for 2 sets of wall squats. First was hold for 30 seconds, the second set was with 50  shoulder presses.
Back to the short field for 4 sets of AYG’s
Back home for Mary: Rosalita and Freddie Mercury’s (I gotta do it since I got named for him)
Very solid performance overall. Lots of solid effort. I intentionally did the hand realease merkins to minimize the head boppin merkins. Run Stopper and Spackler crushed the hand release merkins, the boys from Down Under were solid throughout. Bounce let one rip during the LBC’s. Puddin said that he’d give it a 3 1/2 star rating. I thought it might have been 4 star worthy.
Announcements: F3 Christmas Party and there will be a flag football game on Turkey day in the morning
Thanks for Puddin Pop and Good Hands for giving me the opportunity to Q. Thanks for Jet Fuel for taking us out.

Muscle failure (and a shower)

9 pax assembled for their weekly muscle-building beatdown, with some questions in mind:

  • Am I in the right place?
    • Yes, just back up, as the regulars will be coming in on two-wheels momentarily.
  • Why were you running?
    • I’m still asking myself the same question.
  • Why is there a sewer pipe here?
    • Good question.  Well, I was reading on the internet…

Enough with the Q&A, let’s get to it.

The Thang

COP

Brief warmup

  • SSH
  • IW
  • Prying squat

Swings & Short Walks:

  • Alternating one-hand swings – 10 IC  (20 total)
  • Pax rotate walking to woods and back with slosh pipe (8′ long, 35 lbs)
  • Rinse & repeat 9 times – 8 per pax + their pipe walk
    • (that’s a lot of swings – disclaimer in full effect – #modifyasneeded)

Q attempts to stand pipe on its end, which falls over and cracks (#qualityworkmanship)

Presses (& Squats):

  • Clean, squat, + 5 presses (alternate sides each time)
  • Pax rotate doing zercher squats with slosh pipe, which is now leaking (#freeshowers)
  • Rinse & repeat 9 times – 8 per pax + their pipe squats

Drop the pipe, er, scratch that.  Stand the pipe, and let’s head to the playground for a “breather”.  #yeahright

Pullups and Merkins:

  • 5 pullups
  • 5 good form, full-depth merkins
  • Rinse & Repeat, not until muscle failure, but 10x OYO (which might be the same thing)

Back to the bells…

Squats (& Squats):

  • 7 goblet squats
  • Pax rotate doing zercher squats with showering pipe
  • Rinse & repeat 9 times – 8 per pax + their pipe squats

Grab Bag:

  • Farmer carry – grab two bells and walk to school sidewalk and back
  • Flutter presses – 10 IC
  • American hammer – 10 IC
  • Waiter carry – one bell overhead (optional – racked instead), walk to sidewalk and back
  • Windshield wipers with bell counterbalance – 10 each side
  • LBCs with bell – 15 IC

Done.  And, we’re outta time.

  4. Joe Davis Run – signup
  5. LIFO – Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl – 11/24, 0730-0930 – see Area 51 email (from Brown) for details

Wet Moleskine:

  • The slosh pipe is harder than its 35 lbs would suggest.  YHC found idea in a Dan John article where all things reside, the internet.  The pipe was cut down from the listed 9′ 4″ dimension to just 8′, so that (1) it was more reasonable in difficulty and (2) it would fit in YHC’s Jeep.  With today’s repairs, it may lose another 3-4″.  Perhaps the weight will be upped to compensate.  We’ll see.
  • Planning to rotate an unknown number of pax through a single implement while neither overtaxing the working pax nor omitting the implement-ed pax from a called exercise is harder than you’d think.  The weinke was kept simple for this purpose.
  • 80’s rock, without 80’s love ballads, is harder than Slacker (or Pandora/Spotify/etc) would make it seem.  The 80’s rock station kept serving up slow songs until YHC simply put on his AC/DC playlist.  No apologies for the lack of variety – it was AC/DC after all – but we’ll try again next time.
  • By the time of the Pullup/Merkin set, YHC must have been delirious.  With the rinse & repeat called, YHC thought he’d said to do 10 sets OYO.  Apparently not.  YHC was 9 sets in when Witch Doctor asked if we were “just going to failure”.  At that point, YHC replied that, “no, we were doing 10 sets OYO.  I’m on #9.  Where are y’all?”  As planned, all were on #9 also.  Perfect.
  • YHC felt smoked most of the morning.  Maybe it was the pre-run.  (bad idea anyway, but perhaps especially when Q’ing)  Maybe it was the high volume of swings to start off.  Maybe it was poor bell selection.  Maybe it is because it’s hard to sneak in a break when Q’ing.  Whatever it was, YHC was feeling it this morning.  Hope you all were/are as well.

Thanks for posting today, for playing along with the homemade pipe, and for allowing YHC to lead you through the gauntlet today.  It’s always an honor.

Aye.

ImANIMANLations! (AKA Animal impersonations)

Animal House!  There was something weird in the neighborhood at The Valley South this morning.  It got pretty “hairy.”  No lions and tigers, but lots of bears and other creepy crawlies.  The 5 faithful worked hard to criss-cross the huntingtowne farms elementary school parking lot doing our best impersonations (perhaps imanimalations is a better description).   I think I even heard some animal noises toward the end!

Warm up

  • SSH X 40 IC
  • Squats X 20 IC
  • Imperial Walkers X 30 IC
  • Head Rolls – Because I needed it!

COT

This was Ghost Q for Godspeed who was up for Q today but had to go and move to Charlottesville VA.  Shout out brother.  You will be greatly missed but I have a feeling your animal PT will continue to come back to haunt us!  Flop sweat on this workout came early!, about the crocodile, which is rather fitting since they are a swamp animal.  Guys worked hard and did something a little different.  Thanks playing.  Enjoyed it.

Announcements: Tudoring opportunities
