John Adams and his friends come to Bagpipe

16 pax mustered for another Tuesday morning assault at Bagpipe.  Tagalong gave YHC not only the opportunity to Q but also let YHC plant the shovel flag.  A real shovel flag.  Somebody came in really late…methinks it was Cheddar, and off we went.

Ye Olde Moleskine & The Thang:

Actually, we didn’t launch until after the pax failed the first U.S. Presidential trivia question of the morning.  Question:  What 20th century President’s birthday is February 6th?  Can’t remember who answered nor what the answer was, but it was wrong.  Answer:  Ronald Reagan (of Tampico, IL #heartland).  So we did 7 H-R burpees OYO.

YHC threw out Presidential trivia questions throughout the downpainment.  Correct answer from any of the pax meant a reward of 3 H-R burpees.  Wrong answer “reward” was 7 H-R burpees.

We jogged to one of the lots in the bullring for COP.

13 slow jump squats IC

13 H-R merkins IC

13 Flutters IC

Next Trivia Question:  Who was the 16th President?  Somebody guessed incorrectly.  Answer: Abraham Lincoln (also from smalltown Illinois  #heartland).  7 H-R burpees OYO

Jog to the traffic circle with the orb, and the Raven affixed atop.  Plank on the curb and plank walk left while one of the pax AYG runs the opposite direction back to their spot in the circle.  Proceed thusly until all 16 pax ran; we reversed direction at some point meaning when YHC needed to switch.  We also did 10 merkins OYO at one point.

Next Trivia Question:

What famous American poet was born and died the same years as Abraham Lincoln?  YHC gave a slam dunk clue by pointing to the bird atop the statuary in the aforementioned traffic circle.  Not sure who – but some body nailed it.  3 H-R burpees OYO.

Mosey over to the sidewalk that encircles the small pond, and partner up for the following:

P1 AYG run around pond, P2 Freddy Mercury.  Flapjack.

P1 AYG run, P2 Widearm Merkins. Flapjack.

P1 AYG run, P2 Squats.  Flapjack.

Elbow plank and 13 Dancing Chilcutt’s IC

Mosey to the nearby hill below the lot for a little hill work.

But first another Trivia Question:  Prior to Ronald Reagan, who was the longest living U.S. President?  (not including living Presidents, as I think George H. W. Bush has now outlived his former running mate, but somebody should fact-check me on that).  Somebody guessed wrong.  Correct answer: John Adams (2nd President and first to occupy the White House…from Braintree, MA #nottheheartland).

Anyway, we ran up the hill AYG after 7 more H-R burpees & did 5 jump squats at the top.  Mosey back down.

Backwards bear crawl back up the hill & then 5 more jump squats.

Jog over to the fitness trail to the rock pile.

Next trivia question:  Was not entirely sure I was right on this one, but I fact-checked it and I was right.  Who was the only President to serve 2 non-consecutive terms?  Probably the toughest of the morning, and the pax did not come up with it.  Answer: Grover Cleveland (Grover Cleveland, the only President to ever serve nonconsecutive terms, was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States (1885-89) (1893-97).  7 more H-R burpees

We did 4 sets of 13 squat thrusts with rock overhead.

The other trivia question during the rock sets was:  Who are the 2 father-son President combinations.  This was the easiest of the morn, and several pax nailed it.  Answer: Adams (John and John Quincy) & Bush (George HW & George W).  3 H-R burpees

We then jogged to closest lot between fitness trail and the launch lot for some Mary.   Can’t remember exactly what we did, but I think the following:

Dolly x 13 IC

Slow flutter x 13 IC

Makthar N’Djaiye x 13 IC

Jog back to launch lot.

One last trivia question:  How many children did the Father of our Nation (George Washington) sire?

Someone nailed this one quickly.  Answer: Zero. 3 more H-R Burpees.

Done.

COT with the Swift Pax.  Name-o-rama and announcements with a takeout prayer from PJ asking for strength and courage.

Great work by the pax.  Good to have the 19 year-old Chunder back out, and he even partnered with the old man Q.  I like backwards bear crawls, but need to find shorter hills so we can repeat but YHC admittedly smoked himself…was planning on 3 sets of that.  You’re welcome fellas.

Always enjoy the camaraderie of the the Bagpipe pax.  Thanks for tapping me Tagalong, even if it is due to Ringer bailing on you.  #planb

Don’t forget to EH someone, and then keep EH’ing until they come.

CPR class on Saturday, Feb. 17th – see Madison for details, or Twitter and/or several Slack channels.

2nd or 3rd Brolympics coming soon at Weddington HS – see Wild Turkey for details or someone(s) else?

See you at DaVinci Saturday for more trivia — this time it will be sports trivia.

Time to Make the Donuts

Rumor has it that someone planted a shovel flag or VSF in the Episcopal church parking lot across Independence Park?  Either way, after 7 or 8 pax moseyed over to the launch lot from the aforementioned Episcopal church – 21 total Monday morning donut-makers set out for a DMZ-goes-to- Metro downpainment at the friendly confines of Ranger/Indy.

Here’s The Thang (or something like it) & Ye Olde Moleskine:

Jog to the baseball field next to ETES for a brief COP.  At this point, Bushwood said something to the effect that no one from Ranger had ever stepped foot on the baseball field.  #blazingatrail. He actually might have said no one at Ranger had ever stepped on a blade of grass?

We did 6-count burpees, Squats and a few IW’s IC to which Dock sounded the obligatory “wheelhouse” comment

Then off to the CPCC parking deck (forgot the nickname?) for some catch-me-if-you-can partner work — 10 H-R merkins while partner backward runs; 5 times each.

Apparently we stopped one level short of the roof according to Mutiny.  #cobains.

We did Dancing Chilcutts IC, everyone except Kirk, that is.  He apparently does nothing on his elbows…..

We then ran down the stairs, did a brief squat hold with some overhead press IC.

Next we ran over to Indy Park, through some more grass #ohthehumanity for some wall work

One-legged squats x 13 IC L & R

2 sets of 13 derkins OYO and 2 sets of 13 incline merkins OYO

Jog over to the kitty litter for some more partner work: P1 bear crawl down & lunge walk back while P2 does jump squats. Flapjack. 3x each

P1 crab walk down & backwards lunge walk back while P2 does Freddie Mercury. Flapjack. 3x each.

Jog over to ETES for some people’s chair with a few variations.  During the jog, Rock said something to the effect that this old school bootcamp stuff is really throwing guys for a loop…. #missionaccomplished

We then ran back to the launch lot for 6 MoM with flutters, Makthar N’Djaiye’s, protractor and something else I can’t remember.

Finito.

Final thoughts:

We did the DMZ field trip to Metro (Ranger/Indy) so that our brother Bout Time could join us.  His son Jennings is at Hemby (Presby) Childrens Hospital for his 2nd round of chemotherapy to knockout this a$$hole named leukemia.  DMZ Site Q Aquafresh gave YHC his blessing to audible and launch from Independence Park so DMZ-regular Bout Time could join us.

The donut reference is due to the fact that Jennings woke up this morning when his dad was heading out, and Bout Time told him he was going out to get him a donut and would be back in a little while.  And Bout Time did, of course, run to get his sweet boy a donut after the workout.

For those reading this who are also inclined to pray, or perhaps even if you aren’t normally inclined to pray – I’ll leave you with this and challenge you to do exactly as the writer of Hebrews states on behalf of Bout Time, M. Bout Time and their entire family, most especially their little boy Jennings:

So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

Moving at half the speed of smell…

Councilman & Site Q Dumpster Fire drove The Big House shovel flag into the ground, YHC disclaimed the Monday morning pax, and we headed to the nether regions of the AO to begin our week-starting downpainment.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

I’ll do this with random observations, some true and some fabricated, and sprinkle in what we actually did during the workout, though some of that maybe false as well, but not by design.  The last word of the backblast is the surest truth.

Scabby showed up well before 5:30 #noteworthy  Glad YHC wasn’t the last one to arrive, and I remembered my watch; so some early encouraging signs.

The Steele Creek mafia of Udder & Flipper were there, and they are planning to bring their brand of pain to a Steele Creek AO soon (Olympic HS) – stay tuned for details on launch & logistics.  T-claps fellas.

We ran to the back of the AO for COP and some wall work.  H-R merkins, Slow squats, plank work of various sorts, box jump burpees, Wall-tar N’Djayie’s, and some other stuff.  Count was in cadence for the most part and up to 17.  No idea why, though Flipper did point out it was the 18th, not the 17th….cobains.

We did some people’s chair with overhead press, too.  We then ran off campus for a short tour of the hamlet of Pineville.  Dumpster was the tour guide of sorts.  But first we stopped at his new office for some Mary.  Udder pointed out the distinct smell of beer, suggesting it was coming from Pintville and/or Kit’s Trackside….though it may have been coming from Dumpster’s desk in town hall?

We moseyed on towards the park, though we would never get there.  We did pass a Pinevillian’s domicile that was clearly in need of some septic attention…sweet mercy.  We did not return that way despite Udder’s suggestion #whatiswrongwithyou. Dumpster needs to bring this up at the next council meeting…I pity the fool who lights a match within 50 feet of that structure.  The pungency was so pronounced that on the way back, 2 or 3 blocks away, Flipper suggested we had run back by that home.

We did some partner work in a church parking lot…shades of Anvil though a tad smaller lot.

When we got back to the pokey, we circled up and the pax took turns leading 10 count IC Mary.  Cadence count needs some work, but we’ll get there fellas.  Apparently Private Benjamin’s call was as expected, though I can’t remember what he called.  I called Makthar N’Djaiye’s….of course.  We were in the grass, so you’re welcome gentlemen.

Really do love the privilege of Q’ing.  Hope it was worth more than the price of admission.  And I will say that The Big House is one of the best kept secrets in SOB/Area51.  Let’s not keep it secret.  Private and Dumpster said they are closed for business for the next two weeks – Christmas and New Year’s.   But keep your eyes out for convergence(s) on New Year’s.

And my final rumination has to do with the fact that I was WD this morning.  50% pain & 50% pride.  Alas, Snowflake was Q’ing DMZ, and I’m pretty old.  Just grateful to still be posting after six years of this life-changing fellowship in my life.

My prayer is that there will be a growing realization that Christmas was the earthly beginning of “The Great Rescue”.  There is good news and bad news at Christmas.  The bad news first: we are all in need of rescue.  The good news: the Rescuer came, and He’s still at work.  Emmanuel.

Refuseniks in the Mist

15 of Area 51’s heartiest lads suited up for another Friday edition of Kevlar…and then Joker arrived to make it an even 16.  YHC was woefully sleep deprived after watching the Cubs advance to their 3rd straight NLCS, so included that in the disclaimer and off we went.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

Jog over to the field hockey field for COP

IW x 20 IC

H-R Merkin x 20 IC

Slow Squat x 20 IC

Dancing Chilcutt x 13 IC

Slow Flutter x 20 IC

Plankorama

Partner up for alternating AYG runs across the field by one partner while the other does the following exercises…flapjack:

Carolina Dry Docks x 2

Jump Squats x 2

Alternating Lunges x 2

Jog to the main church building between the outdoor staircases.

Partner 1 runs up/down the stairs while partner 2 does following exercises…flapjack:

Jump Ups

Incline Merkins

One-legged squat L

One-legged squat R

Mosey over to some other sets of benches for 10 box jump burpees.  12 of us did those while Spackler, Bulldog, BLC and Joker (I think?) stood around and talked. #unnecessarymodification

Spackler, true to form, did about 44% of the called exercises or exercises of his own choosing.

The pax then jogged back to the small field near the launch lot for 12 or 13 minutes of Mary, including but not limited to the following x 13 IC

LBC, American Hammer, Barishnokov, 6-count burpee, Protractor, Makhthar N’Djaiye, Slow Dolly

We finished with a bear crawl the length of the field with 13 H-R Merkins at the other end, and so not to offend anyone’s sense of protocol — we finished with 13 SSH’s.

Done.

COT with a great takeout from the Greatest Criminal Mind.

A couple random observations:

  • Pretty sure Joker shat himself a couple of times.
  • Rhapsody and Fletch could have lapped the other 7 partner pairs many times and may have done so.
  • An attempted coup to rename BLC was thwarted by YHC…Big League Chew, and its derivation, is one of the finest nicknames in all of F3.
  • The Cubs won the NLDS
  • Horsehead did Cumberland County Viaducts for large portions of the workout…he loves them so.

Announcements:

Please be in prayer for The Shore and his family as his son Nathan has run away from home and been missing for 4+ days.  May God be merciful and gracious in every way in this situation.

Charity 5K at Kevlar/Skunkworks AO site on Saturday, Nov. 4th at 8am.  Connect with Madison or Tackling Dummy for more information.

What time is it?

YHC pulled up and several pax were in their cars as if it was winter and 20 degrees. Eventually, they emerged from their “fartmobiles” as Horsehead calls them; 29 pax mustered (thought it was 28, but I counted 29…might have been 30?).  YHC gave a barely adequate disclaimer under the watchful ears of A51 Nantan Mermaid, and 29 converged Anvil & DV pax launched a humpday assault.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

We did several things, some of which I’ll accurately describe below.  Most of the pax did most of the exercises…but some pax were their usual refusenik selves.  It is always interesting to hear the talkative DV pax during the downpainment.  They’ve got a lot to say, so please sound off on this backblast with ruminations and recollections of this morning’s proceedings.

Run down & around to one of the oversized lots that are used once per week for a few hours (and for aspiring drivers like YHC’s 2.0 who now has permit #stayoffthesidewalks).

COP:
Did a number of things x13 (YHC’s favorite #) IC

Slow Jump Squat, CDD, H-R Merkin, Slow Flutter, 6-count burpee, perhaps something else?

YHC then handed off to Header

We ran back to the launch lot, broke into groups of 3 and did 2 or 3 rounds of Dips, Hairburners and Down/Back runs.

Then  we Indian Ran? in groups of 3 over to the rock pile.  Everyone then grabbed a “running rock”, and we did alternating 15 reps of curls & tricep extension at each speed bump along the western road at Anvil.  YHC grabbed probably the smallest rock because running with rocks is just dumb..no offense Header.  Alf told me I was out front only because of my small rock…darn skippy!

Lorax was setting pace, as usual.  Mermaid was conserving energy for his fishing trip.  Rachel & Lobsta must have been injured, and the young ‘uns like LaRonda, Jock Strap, Sweeney Todd & Dollywood must have been modifying as they were not out front. #modifyonlywhennecessary

Header then handed it back to YHC to finish things up.

Tried to do some squat hold overhead press, but the Calvary preschool staff was coming through so we moseyed to a nearby lot for some Mary and core work and such.  Pretty sure we did the following, finishing with Cumberland County Viaducts at Horsehead’s request.

American Hammer, Flutter, Alt. Shoulder Tap while in Plank (somebody please name this!), a bit of protractor work, and something else maybe?

AYG run back to the launch lot with lots of pax mailing it in as no one passed the old & slow Q.

Done.

Count off. Namearama. COT.

Thanks to Lorax for taking us out in prayer.

Announcements:

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”  Proverbs 17:17

The Working Man

19 pax mustered in the cheese-grater parking lot at Trinity Presbyterian Church for another late morning edition of #F3Fortress.

YHC started with a disclaimer which was met with many blank stares and a good bit of confusion.

Backup, a late arrival, planted the SF and joined us along with Raider and a couple other stragglers.  Flutie Flakes & Level 10 were 15 minutes earlier, both forgetting the 5;45am launch, thinking it was 5:30am.

So we launched with YHC not terribly sure where we were going as the AO was unfamiliar but we made it work….I think.

The Thang:

Run to the front (I think) entrance to the church for COP.  We about gave some dude a heart attack.  He was walking his Shitzu & Pomeranian.  If I ever have the misfortune of walking two ridiculous dogs like that, I’d do it in the dark at 5:45am, too. #friendsdontletfriendswalklapdogs

Frankly can’t remember exactly what we did or how many reps, but we did slow squats, H-R merkins, 6-count burpees, slow flutters & IW’s…of course.

We then moseyed to the pile of pulverized concrete – apparently Trinity Pres. is building a larger parking lot to make room for more Sunday morning attendees.  Partner up and pick a good lifting rock.

Partner 1 runs about 75 yards down & back while Partner 2 does overhead press. Flapjack.

We also did thrusters, squats, tricep extensions & bicep curls.

Jog over to Providence Prep School for some people’s chair with  25 overhead presses.

I think we might have done some Dancing Chilcutt prior to leaving the Trinity Pres compound but I can’t remember.

After Providence Prep, we froggered it over to St. Gabe’s for a Triple Nickel of H-R Merkins, Backwards bear crawls & Jump Squats.

We then froggered it back to the Fortress AO, circling up for 8 min. & 47 seconds of Mary with the following or something akin to it:

American Hammer, Freddie Mercury, Cumberland County Viaducts, Makthar N’Djaiye’s, LBCs and ???

Run back to launch lot.  5 More 6-count burpees.

Done.

COT

Ye Olde Moleskine:

Noonan tapped me to Q a few weeks ago when YHC brought an FNG to Fortress.  Good crew this morning.  Even my fellow Area51 pax Crotch Rocket made it.  Noonan was killing it on the Triple Nickel.  My partner Sump was really moving on the AYG runs.  T-claps.

T-claps also to Sir Topham for running in, and thanks to Grapevine for giving YHC some intel on the AO prior to the workout….though he did tell me there was a hill which apparently has been whittled down.

Hope my Metro brethren felt they got their money’s worth. Likely a pattern interrupt for the Metro pax in that we only went about 2 miles and actually did a good bit of core work, plank work, and we actually set our feet on some grass during the Triple Nickel.  #cobains

I’ll be back even if Noonan did say I may have worn out my welcome.

Thanks to Grapevine for taking us out in prayer.

Announcements:

F3 Expansion Czar, aka Crotch Rocket, spoke of several new Leap destinations – Chicago, St. Louis & Austin.  Talk it up.

F3 Golf tourney hosted by Area51 on Friday, October 27th to benefit the aforementioned LEAP efforts.  Sign up.  Please.  Metro’s not yet built a wall along Fairview, so you can get to the golf course in Area51 in about 20’ish minutes.  There is life, civilization, intelligence and indoor plumbing south of Fairview.

See you in the gloom soon fellas.

Thanks for the hospitality.  I’ll be back.

12 for 13’s

Rolled into the DMZ launch lot to be welcomed by site Q One Eye who looked to have just done a pre-run…which he had as did Gangsta Mouse, Rock, and Pothole…I think?  May have been others?

No SF.  Pretty sure Bushwood lost it.  Nevertheless, the 12 pax mustered, were quickly disclaimed (first disclaimer several had ever heard methinks); and we launched into the gloom for another Monday morning assault on the DMZ.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

Jog over to CAC parking lot/campus where we would spend all of our time.  The pax jogged by 2 of Charlotte’s finest, but must have chased them off as they were gone by the time we circled around the church.

COP:

Slow squat x 20 IC

H-R Merkin x 20 IC

High Slow Flutter x 20 IC

Shoulder Tapper x 20 IC

Mosey to parking lot & partner up.

13 handslap merkins. Run around church in opposite directions.

13 derkins w/legs on partner’s back. Flapjack.  Repeato.

It started raining pretty heavily at this point, but the pax pressed on with no complaints.

Return to the courtyard for the following:

People’s Chair – Overhead press x 25 IC

13 Jump Ups or Step Ups, 13 burpees. 3 cycles of this.  YHC was the last to finish…and was hurting.  #qcouldbarelydoit

Called for a 10 count at this point from Pele.  Called for another one later from Rock, and that was clearly a mistake. #slowfractionalcounter

At this point, we did some Mary & core work in the courtyard.  Can’t recall exactly what we did, but everything was a 13 Count:

Wallthar N’Djayes x 13 IC

Farrokh Mercury x 13 IC

Flutter x 13 IC

LBC x 13 IC

Dolly x 13 IC

Mosey back to the parking lot.  Partner up again.

13 Jump Squats.  Run around church in opposite directions.

13 H-R Merkins. Run around church in opposite directions.

Repeat.

We did some more Wallthar N’Djaiyes IC at this point I think – 13 of them.

Some more People’s Chair as well with 25 more overhead press IC.

Run back to launch lot.

Still a couple minutes left.

We did some Knee Up’s, but only 10 of them IC.  YHC was really hurting at this point.  Called one other exercise IC but can’t remember what.

Done.

COT – fairly quick with the rain coming down.  Bout Time took us out.

Great to see some guys I hadn’t seen in a long time….of course, I hadn’t been to DMZ in several months.

Bout Time was flying around the parking lot, not surprisingly.  That parking lot is sneaky uphill if heading south, northbound is all downhill.

Cobains for form-policing a bit.  Good form works.  Bad form injures.  No idea how far we ran; my apologies if it was over 1.5 miles….that would have been false advertising on my part.

Announcements:

Still slots for Ragnar Relay on Oct. 6/7 if pax want to sign up.  Check with Wild Turkey or Kid Rock.

First SFN race in South Charlotte is the Isabella Santos 5K/10K on September 30.  Sign up!  Really cool to be a part of something like this fellas: https://f3southcharlotte.com/2017/07/21/preblast-south-charlotte-speedforneed-isabella-santos-5k10k/

“On second thought, let’s just rip the front seats out and sit in back.”

As the pax mustered in the shadow of the Big House, the shovel flag emerged from site Q Dumpster Fire’s vehicle.  Outstanding.  After the SF was planted, YHC disclaimed the pax; Gummy accused me of leaving early, so we walked about 10 paces and then launched officially.

Also, one other pre-launch note: when YHC pulled up next to Snowflake, he was enjoying an early morning nap. #respect; YHC woke him when closing the car door #cobains. And only the WD gets to sleep in the car prior to the downpainment!

Anyway….below is what we did (or something akin to it)….shortly after an especially eager or angry Pineville police officer nearly ran over 3 or 4 pax in his oversized pickup.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

Run up to 51 and u-turn to run all the way to the back of the AO, passing the pay-to-play folks as they packed up…earlier start when you actually pay for it?!

COP

IW x 15 IC

Slow Squat x 15 IC

High Slow Flutter x 15 IC

YHC then called for the heavily trending – plank walk circuit (Cheddar Friday at Centurion, Alf at Q201 Saturday, who’s calling it tomorrow?)

Plank on one parking line.  Plank walk one line left. 5 CDDs. Plank walk right to starting line. 5 H-R Merkins.  We proceeded thusly down to 1 rep of each.  There was some gnashing of teeth, and I think I might have detected some whimpering from Tagalong.

Jog to the pitch for the following:

50 yard grinders (AYG runs) with 10 jump squats at one end and 10 LBC’s at the other.  x3

Dancing Chilcutt x 10 IC

Jog back to the area between the ballfields.

10 Burpee box jumps OYO

5 Burpee box jumps OYO

10 Burpee box jumps OYO

People’s chair w/some Frankenstein and then overhead press x25 IC

Jog back to the pitch for

Prairie Fire Mary x10L, x10C, x10R. Flapjack.

Modified Ring of Fire…sort of.  Plankorama for several minutes with several variations while each pax bear crawled around the circle.  Impressive work by Arsenal and Shrink Wrap, though Shrink Wrap was more gorilla than bear.

Run back towards launch lot.  Stop when we got even with the pay-to-play crowd.  2 sessions for which you can pay…

Lunge walk 25 yards. Bear crawl 25 yards. AYG run about 67 yards.

Freddy Mercury x 13? IC while waiting on the six.  Probably not wise to do so in the middle of the road with the angry officer not far away.

Mosey over to a small patch of well-manicured lawn for 6 MoM.

Partner up again for old school sit-ups while partner holds feet in plank.  x20.  Flapjack.

WD Chopper planked while Gummy & I did the sit-ups…impressive.  Gummy then just stood around while I planked and Chopper did the sit-ups.

American hammer x 13 IC

Makthar N’djaiye x 13 IC

Jog back to launch lot

Flutter x 13 IC

COT with Snowflake taking us out.

Other random observations:

The power of the clowncar in full effect with Flipper & Tagalong both not likely to have made it without their chauffeurs – Udder & Shrink Wrap, respectively.

YHC is culturally illiterate, so when I heard JWoww’s nickname, I had to later look up spelling via Google.  Probably not a great idea.  Do not try at home nor the office.  Never watched Jersey Shore…though one of our original A51 pax – The Shore – was named after this show. #uselesstrivia

Private Benjamin always pushing hard.  The guy is as solid as Otto the Orange, the anthropomorphic mascot of Syracuse University…ok much more solid and indeed a human being.  Pretty sure PB named his first child “Otto”.

Tool Bag is a posting machine.  I see that guy everywhere.  Keep pushing yourself brother, and congrats again on becoming a father recently!

Gump, always decked out in full-length gear even in the heat/humidity, was getting after it as well.

Udder and Flipper were flying around out there, too…except when Udder was taking pictures.

And No Show now always shows – and he’s got some fuel in the tank, too!

Good work men.  Always a privilege to lead you men into and through the gloom.

#cobains for not hitting 2 miles Dumpster Fire….but it is a boot camp workout, is it not?!

Announcements:

American 4-miler on July 4th – F3SpeedforNeed.  Race is in Dilworth.  Early morning 4-miler for as good a cause as I can think of for F3 to rally around.  Let’s post in big numbers for this one fellas!  Many details on Twitter (JRRTolkien) and F3nation.com

Flipper promises a weird Q at #F3RockZero on Saturday for his 3-year F3 anniversary….as if anything from Flipper wouldn’t be weird.

Chopper has his VQ at #F3DaVinci this Saturday.  Won’t be nearly as weird; could double down and hit 30 minutes of Chopper at DaVinci then shoot up Rea Road for final 30 minutes of Flipper at RockZero.  Could start with 30 minutes of Stonehenge, too, for that matter.  Father’s Day Weekend Trifecta.

Go encourage and serve someone today.  That’s why we’re on this big ball of dirt.

The vital signs were not good

15 hearty souls mustered in the cool, crisp autumn gloom at OP Elementary for another Thursday morning edition of Hydra.  No SF…I think DK or 49’er still have the Hydra SF.  Nevertheless, we launched after a feeble disclaimer from YHC…not that any of the pax were listening.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine

Bugeater, yes that Bugeater (former and original Hydra Tri-site Q), was among the pax.  Reached out to him Tuesday and after a delayed HC, he said he was in and that YHC could pick him up.  So here’s the rest of the story: YHC texted him Tuesday night, and he said the invite was tempting; but no HC.  Wednesday at about 1pm, YHC gets the HC text from the #happynebraskan.  Turns out, Bug sent the text immediately following his biometric screening at work.  In his words, “the vital signs were not good Hops”.  T-claps to Bug for posting; glad to have you back in the gloom.

So this leads me to a larger point.  When’s the last time you EH’d a pax that hasn’t posted in a while or an FNG?  Perhaps their vital signs are not good, and they don’t even know it.  And I’m not strictly referring to blood pressure, HDL, etc.  What about the other vital signs in a man’s life?  Emotionally?  Relationally? Spiritually? Socially?  Check in with someone today brothers.  EH him. Do it.

On to The Thang:

We ran around the back of OP to the bus lot for COP

IW x 20 IC

H-R Merkin x 20 IC

MC x 20 IC

Slow squat x 20 IC

Slow flutter x 20 IC

Run over to the Methodist church, and each pax grabs a rock from the creekside.  Haze took forever;  think he broke out his adze to chisel & polish one to his liking.  Mine was too heavy, so I spiked at it some point during the exercises and reduced the weight by 20’ish%.

Walk with rock overhead to back of church lot.

Partner up for 2 rounds of the following:

P1 runs to road & back, P2 does tricep extension. Flapjack.

Also did bicep curls #poolandbeachseason, flutter press & squats

Plankarama with alternating leg lifts x 10 IC.  T-claps to Puddin’ for correctly calling these the Dancing Chilcutt. I think even LaRhonda complained about this one.  It’s rarely called but always effective.

Pickup aforementioned rocks, overhead and mosey around the church stopping at each street lamp on the right for 5 burpees OYO.

Redeposit rocks in the creek bed.  I think Haze kept his….Marge might have as well.  Wolfman, Jet Fuel and Puddin’ ate theirs.

Plankorama including some Southern Gentleman, Yankee Aggressor & Christian Laettner.

Run back to OP.

People’s Chair w/overhead press x 25 IC

Run to field and partner up again for:

Old school sit-ups x 20 with partner holding feet in plank. Flapjack.  Rinse & Repeat with 15 reps.

Prairie Fire Mary x10L x10C x 10R. Flapjack.

Lunge walk 50 yards. AYG run 40 yards to end of field.  Do the same thing coming back.

Circle up for 6 MoM.

American Hammer x 13 IC

Makthar N’Djaiye x 13 IC

Cumberland County Viaduct (OF COURSE!) x13R & x 13L IC. Flapjack.

6-count Burpee x 8? IC. On this one, IH exclaimed, “that’s just a regular burpee!”  Exactly, did you not see the form on the OYO burpees earlier?!! Champagne would have been fuming and perhaps spiked his rock on some pax performing the flying squirrel.

Done.  Mosey back for COT.  Hannibal ably took us out.

Another solid performance by the Hydra pax.  Hope the bootcamp format didn’t disappoint those who fancy themselves as runners. That workout’s down the road and entitled Devils Turn.  Even in “BRR Season” which seems to span 6-7 months, bootcamp workouts shouldn’t be 3.5-4 miles.  Aye?!  No idea how far we went frankly.  Forgot my watch and borrowed Bug’s.  Much obliged brother.  Pele offered his, but YHC apparently was choosy while begging and didn’t want to use his. Cobains.

Some other sundry observations from this morning:

It was eerily quiet without Gummy and Spackler among the pax.  Wolfman’s verbosity knows no bounds…but that’s in the form of one-on-one banter not sarcastic, acidic mumblechatter.

YHC, for the 2nd time in a few weeks, forgot the last pax in COT during name-a-rama. Haze was my victim this morning.  Cobains.  Made sure to include you in the pax list.

Appreciated LaRhonda asking about the derivation of several of the exercise names.  While the derivation is a mystery to many except Dredd, I appreciated his youthful, eager inquisition.

I should probably get to work now.  Good work men.  It is a blessing to Q the pax every time I do it….and even more so without the “encouragement” from Gummy and Spackler.

Did you know you can’t spell Thursday without H-Y-D-R-A?

Announcements:

Speed for Need – first official/Inaugural F3 race is The @RFYL 🇺🇸American 4-miler on July 4th. check @F3speedforneed on Twitter or f3nation.com for details.

Back to an Old Bag of Tricks

23 pax mustered in the south Charlotte gloom for another Monday morning edition of BaseCamp. After a stumbling disclaimer by YHC, we launched into what is normally the most poorly lit AO in all of Area 51.  Thankfully the sun comes up earlier this time of year….though a few of the pax are better seen in the dark.  Didn’t see a shovel flag…Goonie?  Drano?  Perhaps I missed it..as I did Tebow…more on that later.

Anyway, below is something similar to what the downpainment entailed with some random commentary –

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

Jog down to the track and run one lap then circle up at midfield’s for COP.

COP:

IW x 15 IC

Slow Squat x 15 IC

H-R Merkin x 15 IC

Flutter x 15 IC

Carolina Dry Dock x 10 IC

Partner up for the following:

P1 AYG run width of football field while P2 does LBC’s. Flapjack. Rinse & Repeat.

P1 AYG run. P2 Jump Squats. Flapjack. Rinse & Repeat.

P1 AYG run. P2 Wide-Arm Merkins. Flapjack. Rinse & Repeat.

I think we did some Chilcutt with alternating leg lifts x 10 IC at this point.

YHC then grabbed the bag of numbered tennis balls for the next segment.  Not sure who gave me that idea years ago, but Haze provided the tennis balls…glad he was there to enjoy it this morning.

Split the pax into 3 groups.

Then had one of the pax pull a numbered ball out of the bag (numbered 5’ish to 100).  Can’t remember exactly what numbers were drawn – 8, 11, 12, 13, 22, 24, 30..I think?  Anyway, each group ran from midfield to a separate corner of the field and did the following with the same number of reps in the corner and back at midfield:

Burpees, American Hammer, Diamond Merkins, Freddie Mercury, Merkins (Haze called that as my ad-libbing brain froze…thanks for the added creativity?), One-legged squats.

Goonie, Swing State (our guest from NoCo/Isotope/Lake Norman = Lake Nopotope = Identity Crisis for our northern brethren) & Adobe were out front on this bit.  Goonie also had the nerve to call me out on my merkin form…I’m getting a second opinion from Champagne.

We finished with 9 minutes and 47 seconds of Mary consisting of something akin to:

Dolly x 13 IC

Makthar N’Djaiye x 10 IC…of course

6-count burpee x 10 IC

High Slow Flutter x 13 IC

Cumberland County Viaduct x10R IC & x10L IC..of course!  Nobody likes love handles…

Jog back to launch lot.

SSH x 13 IC.  I don’t know why I called these…I’m ashamed of myself.  I can’t explain it.  Simba was not happy at all.

Done

COT with Swing State taking us out.

Announcements:

# Goonie mentioned Savage Race, though it’s far to late to sign-up.  Thanks for nothing Goonie.

# F3 Dads at Charlotte Knights (2.0’s get to sing the National Anthem on the field!) – Friday, May 26th

# Convergence at RockZero on Saturday before Memorial Day – don’t miss!  Really cool with citations read of those decorated men who, indeed, gave their last full measure of devotion to our country and the preservation of our freedoms.

# Convergence Memorial Day at BaseCamp

Some other observations:

Simba talks a lot but also gets after it pretty good out there, and he picked up the tennis balls.  #servant

Insomniac wore a nasty looking NC State hat this morning….backards at times (that’s Wolfpack for backwards)

Smash was mumblechattering the whole workout…ok, not really.  Not at all.  Just seeing who’s paying attention.  Thunder Road was also talking junk the whole time….

Floorslapper was on time as was Adobe. #uncharacteristic

Compound, a recent addition to the pax via Metro, visited his old middle school stomping grounds this morning.  Good to have you brother.  He was mumbling something about his glory days on that gridiron….not really….though maybe?  Maybe not.

Invited Swing State to join us this morning and figured it was him when I saw a vehicle pull into the wrong lot at 5:20’ish…as YHC did (allegedly more than once) a few years ago.  Good to have you down from Lake Nocotope.

Apparently my Q’s are fairly predictable….I accept that.  Goonie did call me out for omitting Burpee Broad Jumps & something else I can’t remember.  I’ll do better next time boss.

And now for the apology portion of this backblast.  YHC inexplicably and inexcusably skipped Tebow at the end of Name-o-rama.  How could that happen?  His beard is twice as long as Haze’s and much redder. #ginger   No words.  Cobains Tebow.  I made sure the list listed you in the pax list.

Grateful to Goonie & Drano for tapping me to Q.  It really is a privilege to lead you men through the workout.  The 1st F doesn’t get easier, you just get stronger (if you push yourself).  The 2nd F is why we want to keep posting and connecting with the pax (also takes effort/intentionality).  And the 3rd F is ultimately the “why” we do anything we do.  Drink deeply from all 3 wells men.
