The family’s back together again – #F3RockZero

2 awesome workouts re-merging after a few years, yet not one SF….oh the humanity!  This is America, is it not?  Flipper promises to make sure there’s a SF every time going forward at #F3RockZero.

After a disclaimer that Mermaid would not approve, the pax set out for an inaugural assault at RockZero.

The Thang:

P1 – decline merkins x 20 on swing. P2 – Jump squat x 20. Flapjack. Rinse & Repeat.

Ye Olde Moleskine:

A pax of 20 for the re-uniting of The Rock & Day Zero.  Good stuff.  Good call to do this in YHC’s opinion.  Good to have Tiger Rag and his workout mittens join us.  He left after about 22 minutes after the playground work, but did the 6 mile pre-run with Hairball and Prohibition.  T-claps.

Strong work by the pax.  E-Trade was particularly stout….when will you post on a weekday brother?  Of course, you’ll probably never see this backblast either.

Boerewors was giving great effort, and he actually already voted.  South African electorate…Safe Lite, our other South African compadre, can’t vote….at least not in Charlotte but probably could in eastern North Carolina or Chicago #earlyandoften

Swiper was his normal mumblechattering self, but methinks the burpee broad jumps and surprisingly the alternating leg lifts while in elbow plank got his attention.  Teddy, Jet Fuel, Red Rocks couldn’t get a word in though….

Didn’t even notice if Runstopper wore tights?

Dear Abby was last in….but glad he made it to the reunion party.

Anyway, was a privilege to Q this remixed crew.  Addition by addition or something like that.  Thanks to Flipper for taking us out in prayer.  Indeed, much for which to be thankful…including the American Hammer.

Despite Hopper’s announcement that I was a godfather or something and that I was going to be co-Q with Flipper at RockZero….that’s not going to happen.  Or I am now announcing my retirement as co-Q after about 4.5 hours.

Announcements:

Christmas Party – sign-up.  All the pax from former or current British colonies/protectorates/etc promise to sing a few of their favorite songs from the old countries.

Joe Davis Resolution Run – Saturday, Jan. 7th – sign up

Somebody’s gotta go back & get a $%#tload of dimes!

10 pax, 1 site Q, no SF & some random person parked near the pax in a parking lot with more than 2,000 spaces.  A disclaimer Mermaid could not have been pleased with from YHC, and then we launched our assault on another humpday edition of Anvil.

The Thang:

Jog a roundabout loop back past the random person parked near the launch point.  Another car break-in or two at Anvil?  Perhaps, but we ran on anyway.  Maybe O’Tannebaum’s late arrival due to some extended early morning paperwork ultimately persuaded the random to take off?

Anyway, the pax circled up for COP near the gym building and the artificial turf semi-circle hill.

IW x 20 IC

Slow squat x 20 IC

Freddy Mercury x 20 IC

6-count burpee x 10 (or 13?) IC

Backwards bear crawl up the turf hill (replica of the Houston Astro’s centerfield), plank walk left around perimeter of circle.  Repeato but with plank walk right around perimeter.

Jog to one of the nearby lots for the following:

P1 AYG run down to far median, lungewalk to middle median and high knee to start; P2 does H-R merkins. Flapjack.

P1 AYG backwards run to far median, inchworm to middle, broad jump to start. P2 does flutters.

Jog to pavilion.

People’s Chair – 25 overhead press IC

People’s Chair – right leg up then left leg up

BTW’s – walkout and back x 3

Jog to playground.

Plank with feet on swing – 20 knees to chest then 10 derkins. 3 cycles of this.

Run to rocks near the ballfield.  Grab a rock.

Thruster x 15 OYO

Good-morning x 10 OYO

Thruster x 15 OYO

Good-morning x 10 OYO.

AYG run around a couple of parking lots back to rocks.

Curls x 15 OYO

Standing lunge x10 R and x10 L

Jog back to launch lot for 9 1/2 minutes of Mary.

Dolly x 13 IC

Plankorama – SG & YA

Elbow plank w/alternating leg lifts x 13 IC

Side crunches x13 R and x13 L IC

6-count burpee x 13 IC

Done.

Ye Olde Moleskine:

Glad O’Tannenbaum found us as we were hiding behind the wall of the gym building. #resourceful

Not the most creative Q, but hopefully the pax got what they paid for….

Not a lot of mumblechatter though Champagne called “angry Q” on YHC during a brief form tutorial on People’s Chair #potkettle

Also, Mermaid did some form-policing on Van Pelt during the rock work.  The form was indeed atrocious as was Ickey’s during Dolly.

Appreciate Lobstah not Larry Birding YHC on the runs…must have been injured a bit…

Thanks to Hannibal for taking us out…and by the way, your beard will have a zip code of its own by Thanksgiving.

That’s it for YHC’s commentary.

Announcements:

Quite a few: Ragnar (Friday), Southern Discomfort (Sat., 10/22) , Joe Davis 5K (Sat., Jan. 7)

Read the weekly, website, Twitter, etc. for all the latest and greatest.

What in the wide, wide world of sports is a-goin’ on here?

YHC, after setting the alarm extra early, arrived at the cavernous AO that is Dromedary several minutes early…even getting there before Bratwurst.  First pleasant surprise of the morning was that Bratwurst had the shovel flag that Snoop Dog forged many months ago and then donated to the F3 Golf tournament.  Brat gave YHC the privilege of planting the SF, and then we waited for the pax to muster.  Believe Posse or Biff was LIFO…not sure, but we then launched into the gloom for something that went at least somewhat like this:

The Thang:

Jog to the small track (1/8’ish of a mile).  Circle up for COP

COP:

6-count burpee x 10 IC

Slow squat x 20 IC

IW x 25 IC

Dolly x 15 IC

Partner up for the following:

P1 runs the track while P2 holds plank – emphasis on good form. Flapjack.

P1 runs while P2 holds squat. Flapjack.

P1 runs while P2 on six holds legs at 6 inches.  Flapjack.

P1 runs while P2 does 6 inch merkin hold (aka Mission Impossible). Flapjack.

Mosey over to the tables just outside the high school cafeteria.

Jump Up x 13, Derkin x 13 OYO. 3 circuits.

People’s Chair w/overhead press x 25, IC

People’s Chair w/Frankenstein hold

Mosey over to some other building while knifing through the buses and nearly being hit by a car.

BTW’s with walkout and walkup x 3

Donkey Kicks x 13 OYO.  3 circuits.

Jog back to launch lot for some Mary.

6 MoM:

Partner work:

Praire Fire Mary – 13R, 13C, 13L. Flapjack.

Old school sit-ups x 20 with partner holding feet while in plank. Flapjack.

Slow Flutter x 13 IC

Makthar N’Djaiye x 13 IC

SSH x 25 IC

Done.

COT

Ye Olde Moleskine:

YHC texted Bananas & Bratwurst late Tuesday afternoon and asked “Who’s on Q at Dromedary?”  Bratwurst replied: “You are”.  Bananas quickly concurred.  So there it was.

Arrived early, despite the long drive to the Deep South of Area 51. or is it UC?  or is it SC?  Anyway, I forgot how huge this AO is….and forgot what the AO had to offer. #lackofQprep  Frack was helpful in helping YHC find the small track for COP and the first painstation.  Much obliged brother.

Bananas kept claiming the track was a 1/2 mile, which means several world records were set in the 800m run.  Frack was flying around the track the first 2 laps…not so much the next 2.  Hollywood and Dasher were flying all 4 laps.  I’m sure others were as well, but Dasher being my partner – I noticed and was grateful.  Backsplash was also teamed with us; didn’t see him much but Dasher assured me hadn’t left.  Glad he didn’t – would have hurt my feelings; and I did see him later on.

During the People’s chair segment, Brat threatened to leave his $#!print on the cafeteria window, but that would have ruined the kids’ lunch and likely could have worn out the pax’ welcome at the home of the Mavericks.

#Cobains for YHC’s form tutorials on some exercises…but rumor has it you get stronger and better if you actually do the exercises correctly?

After almost desecrating the cafeteria windows, a couple of us almost got run over cutting through the buses.  I had visions of someone running through right as some sleep-deprived, over-caffeinated bus driver threw the door lever open….but that didn’t happen.

Methinks the BTW’s and donkey kicks were a break from the Dromedary rountine?

YHC did pause for twice to give the pax a breather.  Frack’s 10 count was 3.78 seconds, and Crabcake obliged YHC’s seemingly random call for a 13 count….WTH?

Hollywood, donning some homemade family mud-run t-shirt, was doing some sort of scissor-kick SSH at the end….that was interesting.  Hope you didn’t wreck your groin.

Grease Monkey, during name-a-rama, added “The” to his nickname.  I purposely did not put that in the pax listing…reminded me too much of Ohio State….get over yourself Brutus.

Strong group of pax at Dromedary for sure.  It was good to be back out there with you fellas.  In truth, glad Brat & Bananas asked…I mean told me….to Q.

Keep coming out men, and keep encouraging and pushing each other to improve, especially in the 2nd & 3rd F categories….but also the 1st F.

Thanks to Bratwurst for taking us out.

Announcements:

Bratwurst is lining up Q’s for the rest of the year….sign up or you’ll be summarily assigned a morning.

3rd F – F3Sanctuary – Thursday nights at 7:30pm at Brooklyn Pizza-Wesley Chapel

Bananas is never late to a workout…..if he’s late, he’s fartsacking.

5 Years is a long time, but not really — Area 51 Convergence for 5 Year Anniversary

WARNING: Long backblast but hopefully worth the read and colorful commentary will ensue.

Mermaid, our current Area 51 Nantan, hatched this idea for a 5-year celebration of F3 in Area 51.  After date and AO selected (of course Anvil/The Rock AO was the obvious choice), Mermaid tapped 5 old farts of Area 51 to Q this convergence, including the 2 former regional Nantans – Joker & Tiger Rag.

After the pax rolled into 3 or 4 different lots at the AO and delivered KB’s to Stone Cold, food to Mermaid for Calvary pantry, etc., we all converged in the middle lot for a Runstopper Q’d COP.

Hopefully, the 106 men who posted got their morning’s worth of pain from Runstopper’s COP and the 4 stations.  YHC heard mumblechatter in COP about too many burpees and who calls 20 merkins in COP?  The usual suspects did not disappoint – Gummy, Semi-Gloss, Swiper, Spackler, Udder, and others for sure.

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

COP:

Merkins, MCs, Burpees, LBCs

Quickly split the pax into 4 groups and give instructions as to stations and rotations.  Most of the pax were listening, with the exception of the aforementioned knuckleheads – Semi-Gloss, Spackler & Swiper.  More than one Q remarked that those 3 seemingly arrived about 5 minutes late to the 10-11 minute rotations, if at all; but were generally roaming around at their leisure.  Don’t remember seeing Spackler or Semi-Gloss at my station?  Heard Swiper for sure.

Saw a lot of familiar faces in the gloom, and a lot of unfamiliar faces, too — both great things!

** Joker’s station:

The workout consisted of the following

·         200 meter warm up lap

·         Find a partner

·         Partner 1 – full speed 200 meter lap, while Partner 2 does merkins

·         Partner 2 – full speed 200 meter lap, while Partner 1 does merkins [total merkins varied by group… 100 – 200]

·         Partner 1 – full speed 200 meter lap, while Partner 2 does squats

·         Partner 2 – full speed 200 meter lap, while Partner 1 does squats [total squats varied by group…. 150 – 200]

·         Each group did a medley of planks and/or LBCs

Joker:  “By the time guys got to my station [after having done kettlebells and/or hairburners] they were wiped out pretty good”

“There were three guys at the workout today that were also at the first Area51 workout on September 10, 2011…. Joker, Slapshot and Ocho Cinco”   T-claps for the 3 original Area 51 pax!!!

YHC’s 10 cents: Grateful to Joker for the courage to start this thing in Area 51.  I feel confident YHC can speak for hundreds & hundreds of men in saying “Thank You” for your willingness to lead and start something which has positively impacted us in many ways, some of which many don’t even realize fully.

Hops’ station:

Pax did a bunch of different plank and mary exercises, including (I think) but not limited to the following:

CCVs….of course!  Funniest comment of the morning was when Rev asked Grapevine if he did CCV’s at Curves

Makthar N’diaye’s, Very Slow Flutters, Knee-Ups, American Hammers, Elbow Plank w/Leg Lefts, Dolly, LBCs, etc, etc

Prairie Fire Mary – in the 3rd group, Fire Hazard helped YHC demonstrate and by then the abs, hip flexors, etc. were shredded.  Fire Hazard pert near severed some stuff in YHC’s gronoidal region #withauthority

Old school sit-ups with partner 2 in plank on partner 1’s feet. Flapjack

When YHC noticed Nibbler among the pax, I remarked I hadn’t heard any audible “encouragement” from him; the other Q’s did hear Nibb’s customary commentary I’m sure!

Tiger Rag’s station:

·         3 man – 1/4 mile hairburner loop.  Partner 1 push, Partner 2 and 3 5 burpees each and CMIYC.  Rotate until complete.

·         ¼ mile mosey

·         3 man inchworms.  Partner 1, Inchworms x 5, P2 & 3 5 squats. Rotate until each Pax does 5 rounds (or until time).

TR’s Observations: “None.  No one had fun.  No one talked.  Everyone left abruptly.”

YHC’s observation: Very thankful for all of the time, energy and thought TR has put into making F3 Area 51 what it is today — which is a much healthier, stronger & well-organized entity than it was 5 years ago and well-positioned for the next 5.  Aye!

Stone Cold’s Station:

KB Tabata:  1 min ON, 20 sec rest
Good Mornings
2 hand swings
Cleans
Squats- goblet or tea bag
Clean + Squat + Press
High Pulls
Viking
Alternating 1 hand swing
KB Crunches
There was a mixture of that in each group.
Stone Cold’s observations:
Kept getting “where’s the music?”  Q fail
I think we had more KBs show up than Pax- didn’t use half of them but thanks to those who brought em out.
Runstopper liked my socks but has requested them in tights.  #christmaspresent
Voodoo and High tide tie for the best KB form in Area51.
The Area51 Runners (#skinnyarms) stared at the bells for awhile until they figured out that you pick it up by the handle.
Q:  Who did the most mubblechatter out there today?  Gummy, Swiper, or Semigloss?
I must admit the Pax came to my section a little beat up…complaining of hairburners.  They seemed not so eager to swing the iron and had a little tough time hanging in for the full minute of ON time.  But all in all they did well.
*** FINAL Commentary:
I’ll start with restating TR’s prayer request for Frasier: Please pray for Frasier and his family as his dad is very ill.  Frasier is one of the pax, along with many of you, who has poured himself into the pax in many ways.  Let’s lift him up brothers.
Only one life to live on this big ball (as Dredd calls it).  Steward it well men.
It was a pleasure to be part of the Q team for this 5th year convergence for Area 51.  Among many faults YHC has is a tendency to be a bit verbose….shut up Alf, Gummy, Ickey, TR, and a host of other quick-witted pax who are now roasting me.
But since I drew the short-straw to write the backblast, I’ll close with a few observations of my own:
* Men are not good at forming what I call community.  But I firmly believe we are all hard-wired for it.  106 pax this morning are living proof that F3 has gifted us a community of men that want to struggle well together through life – physically, relationally and spiritually.
* While I sit here unemployed, wrestling with the accompanying anxieties and fears with a wife and two boys and all the “stuff” of life; overall I’m encouraged and hopeful.  That hope certainly has a lot to do with my faith; but it also has a lot to do with the encouragement from you guys.  I’m not saying I’d be in a really bad place without F3, but glad I don’t have to test that hypothesis.  What I am saying is that I’m thankful for the fellowship, moreover friendship that I have with you knuckleheads.  I need F3.
* OK, I’ll shut up now after closing with this quote that I think captures what F3 has meant to so many of us who find ourselves struggling with a lot of the same challenges in our lives.  And a community of men who help us realize that we’re not alone.

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one”

 – C.S. Lewis

44 cards in the deck. No shuffling but a painful hand was dealt.

18 brave lads, including 1 FNG posted at Centurion for a beatdown to start their Friday off right.  YHC hopefully delivered what they paid for. The pax were summarily and quickly disclaimed, and 17 launched into the gloom (Scabby was late….again…this time due to spilling merlot on the run in due to the thought of YHC’s Q).

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

1st Q fail of the morning happened pre-launch when YHC wrongly welcomed Fireman Ed when it was in fact Fire Marshall Bill.  Apologized profusely to Fire Marshall Bill…no offense Fireman Ed.

We headed out for a run up to the shopping center at Carmel/51.

Circle up for COP:

IW x 22 IC

Slow squat x 22 IC

Slow Flutter x 22 IC

6-count burpee x 11 IC

Partner up for the following circuit x 4:

11 old school sit-ups with partner holding feet while in plank.  Flapjack.

Run up far left staircase, over to middle of the building.

11 H-R Merkins.

Run on, down right stair case and back to start point.

Some more Mary when all pax finished, mostly led by Flipper, site FNG at Centurion.  Many happy returns.

Also did 13 alternating leg lifts IC while in elbow plank…though the pax all stopped at 11 trying to anticipate the Q’s count.  Don’t do that!

44 old-school sit-ups & 44 H-R merkins for everyone.

Run back to CCHS past launch lot to the tiny natatorium. #babypool

6-count burpee x 11 IC

Mosey down the hill to base of parking lot.

P1 backwards bearcrawl uphill for 30 yards, lunge walk back down while P2 does CDD’s. Flapjack.

P1 bearcrawl uphill for 40 yards, lunge walk back down while P2 does LBC’s. Flapjack.

P1 broad jump uphill for 30 yards, jog down while P2 does H-R merkins.  Flapjack.

Run back to launch lot for the following:

6-count burpee x 11 IC

Freddy Mercury x 13 IC

Slow flutter x 22 IC

Slow squat x 22 IC

Run around football field complex and return to launch lot for the following:

6-count burpee x 11 IC

SSH x 44 IC.

So we did 44 of a lot of different exercises as YHC turned 44 yesterday.  You’re welcome fellas.

Champagne would have been proud of this one as the called exercises really minimized cheating….Chelms & Ickey were grumbling.

YHC called Ickey out on Twitter…achieving the assumed HC.  Ickey promised to actually do the Ickey Shuffle if we had 20 pax, but alas, we were 2 short.  Should have done it anyway!

Strong work out there by everyone.  Welcome to Lassativo (FNG Matt S).  YHC had to rename as I was informed we already have an Ex-Lax in the A51 pax….though methinks he doesn’t post anymore?  Anyway – Lassativo is Italian for Laxative.  Pretty sure Matt is of Italian heritage, but even if not, it’s a good nickname.

Glad Scabby made it after spilling merlot – hope you’re feeling better.  You’re usually earlier when you run in.

Kotters to Escargot – great to have you back out.   Many painful returns.

And great to see Flipper posting on a weekday.  His first post at Centurion and 1st weekday post in Area 51.

Please chime in with any anecdotes, rebuttals, etc.  Hope you’re hurting, that’s why you post gentleman.

Announcements:

Chelms encouraged all BRR’ers to post at Horsey Monday for painful hills and creepy, freaky residents stalking the pax.

There might have been another announcements but I can’t remember.

A loaf of bread, a quart of milk, and a stick of butter

No SF…apparently the happy Nebraskan or DK is holding it hostage and never relinquished possession. Trivia question: can anyone name the other original tri-Q that led to the AO’s name?  Anywho, the veteran Hydra pax was summarily disclaimed and off we went.  Did I mention to modify if necessary?  Mermaid would not have been pleased.

The Thang & Moleskine:

YHC said follow me and off we ran to Colony Place – about 0.6 miles to the far parking lot.  Circle up for COP.  Wait a minute, where’s Ironsides?  Q failure….and we’re only 5 or 6 minutes in.  There’s Ironsides.  YHC found out later that he was feeling his oats, not due to the Q’s regimen, rather due to the flu.  More on that later.

COP:

IW x 20 IC

H-R Merkin x 20 IC

At this point, Curd started talking junk about who was my favorite #20 for the Cubs or other teams.  Somebody said Ryne Sandberg was #20.  WRONG.  Purple Haze – where are you?! Puddin’ Pop made the correction on Ryno’s #…..23, of course.  T- claps to the site Q.  The Mayor is a fountain of useless sports trivia much like YHC.  Puddin’ continued to list some other noteworthy #20’s such as Kurt Coleman, who signed a 3-year deal with the Panthers. #keeppounding  Someone else in the pax adroitly mentioned Chris Gamble was #20 as well.  The unfortunate commonality is not that they are/were both DB’s for the Panthers; but unfortunately both played at Ohio State.  Ohio State is like a bad penny or Celine Dion….they just won’t go away….and they’re everywhere.

Where was I?  Did I digress?

Squat x 20 IC

Flutter x 20 IC

At this point, Champagne had not corrected YHC’s form.  #miracle  He did call me an angry Q later, which was true…sort of.  That was after Gummy called me out for poor form on CDD’s.  Really?  Some made up exercise named by Dredd?  Is there a correct form?  Ok, YHC’s form on those is terrible.  I’m coachable, but perhaps the shredded rotator cuff is holding me back.

Ok, so we’re still in the far parking lot at Colony Place, and it’s a pretty big one…much smoother than the meatgrinder at OPES.  Let’s take advantage of that, shall we?

Bearcrawl the length of lot – 50 or 60 yards?  No idea, but some of the pax were bitchin’ something fierce.  Stop at every third line and do 3 merkins.

Burpee broadjump back the length of the lot.  #refuseniks aplenty out there….not sure if that was necessary modifications or folks were already mailin’ it in at the 15 minute mark.  Curd was mailin’ it in and Gummy called him out.  Thanks for the assist from Area 51’s most sarcastic pax.  Love it.

Lunge walk the length of the lot, stopping every 3rd line for 3 squats.

Jog to the fountain for the following:

5 Jump Up’s and 5 CDD’s x 3 OYO

5 Jump Up’s and 5 Widearm Merkins x 3 OYO

Plankorama to work the core – just as important for you BRRers…according to someone?  We did various plank, including but perhaps not limited to: Southern Gentleman, Yankee Aggressor, Chilcutt & 10 alternating leg lifts while in Chilcutt.  Need to name this one.  Suggestions: Gummy? Mayor? TR?  Horsehead?  Damn – forgot to call Makthar N’Dijaye’s.

Run back past OPES to the Methodist church on the other side of Rea Road for some rock work.  Lifting only, no running.  Took the pax about 5 minutes to procure a rock.  WTH?  And The Mayor was playing in the creekbed forever.  Don’t remember exactly what we did as we were “interrupted” by several women arriving for some early morning 3rd F at the church.  But we did overhead press a couple times, some bicep curls, tricep extension, and some sort of upright row while in squat.  Absolutely certain YHC had incorrect form on this.  Champagne was merciful.

Run back across Rea all the way to back of OPES to the only hill, if you can call it that.  You really can’t call it that, but we did Triple Nickel on the ant hill with 5 H-R Merkins at the top and 5 Jump Squats at bottom – Backwards bearcrawl up the hill in between.  #crowdpleaser

The pax then ran back to the launch lot.  Everybody said we were done, but YHC had to finish with 10 6-count burpees in cadence.  Done.

Gummy took the pax out in prayer thanking God for strong bodies to workout and then hedging with a “well… most of us that is.”  Good humor.

More Moleskine

A couple more noteworthy items:

Curd ran in – 2’ish miles roundtrip.  Also, he was excited to announce after the downpainment that his longboard/skateboard was due to arrive tomorrow.  WTH?  Anyway, he promised to ride it into Hydra soon.

Ironsides left just prior to the rock work.  He was about to spill merlot, and wanted to make an exit gracefully.  He’s on Q next week…assuming he’s not still green in the gills.  Get well brother.

F3 Golf tomorrow – come on out to play at last minute, just donate some $$ to F3Leap and heckle the pax, very few of whom have any business getting near a golf course.  Current odds on Brown wearing a Fishnet golf shirt and purple shoes are at 5:1?  And odds of Poptart – aka Beer Miler extraordinaire – donning an Ike Turner for the round are at 3:1.

I need to stop writing.  You need to get back to work.

Cape Town is Jo-burg’s Daddy!

Both Site-Q’s were gametime scratches, so no SF, but we launched at The Rock after brief disclaimer.

Small but hearty crew.  Got a brief geography and cultural lesson on Johannesburg and Cape Town – South Africa…so that was helpful.  Also good to learn that most of the rest of the world can’t stand France either.

Sledge, Hammer’s 2.0, rode into the lot with a towel over his head….every 13-year old wants to start his day with a 3.2 mile, 84 degree/84% humidity beatdown, right?  Good work Sledge.  And appreciate the prayer in COT from Hammer.  #davehuberesque

Despite my rather unorthodox Q at Anvil Wednesday, both Deep Dish and Hammer came back to same AO and same Q this morning.  #muchobliged

Deep Dish, Cubs fan that he is, appreciated my shout-out to Ben Zobrist again on the 3rd set of donkey kicks.  #LETSGO

Always appreciate our South African brothers and their hard work and good attitudes.  Boerewors paid YHC a compliment by saying this hour long downpainment had the intensity of a 45-minute workout.  Couldn’t possibly have been as #highintensity as Purple Haze’s DZ Q today, could it?

Glad it was worth the effort to post men.  Five Knolls, as advertised, is no joke.  YHC’s first time on that monstrosity.  Always a privilege to Q, especially at the finest AO in Area51.

Announcements:

Sign up for F3 Golf – Friday July 29th – 9am start.  Tiger Rag & Bananas guaranteed a high temp of less than 84.

Keep your antenna up for 5th Anniversary of Area 51 — likely a Saturday convergence after BRR in September.

Tinkers to Evers to Chance at Anvil

Lobsta Roll planted the shovel flag. Yes.  A real shovel flag!  YHC then disclaimed the pax, including an FNG, and 15 men set out for a Wednesday game of trivial pursuit around the Anvil campus.  It went a little something like this…

The Thang & Ye Olde Moleskine:

With the Cubs still in 1st place by 9 games (though they’re stumbling a bit), and the MLB All-Stars announced Tuesday night, YHC decided to make the downpainment at Anvil a decidedly baseball-themed one.  More specifically, a Chicago Cubs theme.

First order of business was to grab the wooden and aluminum bats from YHC’s trunk.  Only had 8 or 9 so the pax would have to share.

Penalty of 5 burpees for all pax if a bat was dropped during the workout.  YHC dropped one early on but “forgot” to impose the penalty.  Cobains.

We jogged over to one of the lots close to the pavilion & pitch for some COP.

Throughout the workout, YHC would ask a specific member of the pax a Cubs-related trivia question.  Correct answer, all is well. Incorrect answer – 5 burpees for the pax.

Haze, as I knew he would, nailed the first question about Ben Zobrist. #softball

18 IW’s IC. #BenZobrist

Then asked Lobsta a question, he answered “Theo Epstein”.  Smart#^% Red Sox fan, though a great answer, albeit incorrect.  5 burpees for the pax.

17 H-R Merkins IC #KrisBryant

YHC then asked Brushback a True/False question:  “Was Iron Horse alive the last time the Cubs made the World Series?”  He answered False, which is correct though IH was almost alive then.  Not really.  It was 1945.  #old #respect

YHC then asked Dear Abby who was #24 for the Cubs.  He answered Ryne Sandberg, #23 who retired about 15 years ago.  Were you even born in 1984 Dear Abby? #warbabyextraordinaire

5 more burpees for the pax.

24 Slow Squats IC #DexterFowler

At some point, Deep Dish correctly answered a question about Ronald Reagan playing college football at Eureka College in Eureka, IL (home of Ben Zobrist, YHC’s favorite Cubbie).  Good work Deep Dish.

27 Flutters IC #AddisonRussell

Grab the bats and mosey to the pitch for some 7’s. Jump Squats at bottom of hill, H-R Merkins at the top.

Jog to playground.

FNG Tagalong (an EH of Thin Mint) correctly answers a question about Jon Lester of the Cubs.  We later found out Tagalong is a Northeastern grad (former punter for the Huskies but they shut down the program, reportedly in part due to his inability to execute the coffin corner), so he had some knowledge of the Red Sox & Lester.  Think YHC even saw Lobsta smile on that one.

34 Freddy Mercury’s IC #JonLester

22 Donkey Kicks on swings & 22 H-R Merkins.  44 total.  #AnthonyRizzo

Jog to the rocks at other end of Anvil near the larger ballfield.  Partner up.

P1 runs to lightpost with bat overhead (5 burpees if bat dropped or lowered below head) while P2 does overhead press with the rock.  Flapjack.

P1 bat run while P2 does squats with rock. Flapjack.

P1 bat run while P2 does Louganis with Rock.  Thanks…sort of…to IH for the semi-Q jack on the Louganis form.  It was more painful than what YHC had demonstrated.

** Side Note: IH was his usual smart#!@ self while denigrating YHC’s beloved Cubs.  Lobsta was none-too-kind either.

At this point I asked Hammer a question: “What year was Wrigley Field built?”  Correct answer: 1914.  Hammer’s answer: 1898.  Close, but 5 burpees for all.

Then asked Side Car which was the oldest stadium in MLB.  Think he said Turner Field or Camden Yards or some silliness.  Correct answer: Lobsta’s favorite Fenway Park.   Had to be kind to the site Q though with YHC’s unorthodox Q, he may not invite me to Q again.

We then moseyed to the ballfield.  I asked Scabby “Who was #44 for the Chicago Cubs?”  He didn’t even venture a guess, but rather, he just started his 5 burpees.  The rest of the pax did likewise.  Now that’s funny.  Suppose he deserved it for his normal LIFO arrival.

At this point, YHC was suffering from sleep deprivation, heat stroke or something; but we did the following even though YHC was saying the wrong thing repeatedly #doasIdonotasisay

Lunge walk to 1st base – 11 CDD’s

Bear crawl to 2nd base – 11 Sister Mary Catherine’s

Crab walk to 3rd base – 11 Slow Jump Squats IC

Backwards run home.

Grab the bats and jog back to launch lot.

Upon arrival at the lot, Hammer dropped his bat.  5 more burpees gentlemen.

We then did some Mary.

American Hammer x 13 IC

Leg lift x 23 IC #RyneSandberg

6-count burpee x 5 IC

After another #softball question posed to Purple Haze, saving the pax from 5 more burpees, we finished with:

SSH x 49 IC #JakeArrieta

COT

Again, a little unorthodox but hope the pax enjoyed and got somewhat of a decent workout.  Great to have Tagalong join us.  Good crew this morning.  Thanks for putting up with the aging, goofy Q.  For those of you wondering, which probably is zero of you — 7 of the Cubbies #’d above are the 7 named to the NL All-Star Squad for the midsummer classic to be played Tuesday, July 12th.  The # of reps corresponded to their jersey #’s.  Ryne Sandberg thrown in for good measure.  This could be the year!  #LETSGO

Tennis on the pitch

10 pax mustered for another Saturday assault at DayZero.  No SF of course; does anyone plant those anymore?  A veteran crew so the disclaimer was brief, and actually Swiper started his Q-jack tendencies even during the disclaimer.  He’s very helpful.  Semi-Gloss showed up after the warm-up lap, but he would make that up later.

The Thang:

Warm up lap around the pitch

COP

IW x 25 IC

Slow squat x 25 IC

6-count burpee x 15 IC

Flutter x 25 IC

On to the main event.  Tennis anyone?

YHC has a bag of numbered tennis balls.  Purple Haze gave me about 50 (only 21 remain) back when he used to play tennis.  Each pax would take a ball out, hit it with an old beat-up tennis racket as far as he could.  Then he would AYG run to get it while the pax planked, held squat, and various other forms of active recovery.  Then the pax would call out an exercise of his choice with the count corresponding to the # on the ball.

So I have no idea the #’s nor the order in which we did the exercises, but it was something like this:

100 Calf raises, burpees, rock sets with squats (Ickey called two of these – 14 or 15 or something), heels to heaven, Rosalita (Pro called this and this cadence was very erratic, pretty sure I retore my labrum…WTH?!), Makthar N’Djiaye (YHC’s call of course), Merkins, Squats, LBCs, Jump Squats (SG didn’t jump), pull-ups (Swiper called for these all morning – I think we did 12 – mine were supine – #soccerarms), Side-crunches x 45, monkey humpers – 54 of them as YHC recalls (somebody said these are Stone Cold’s favorite exercise – WTH?!).

Final exercise, as “luck” would have it, was to 100 again.  Last ball in the bag was a 100.  So we did 50 H-R Merkins and 50 Overhead press, alternating 10 at a time of each.

Mosey to the basketball court for some more Mary – American Hammer and one other I can’t remember.

3 sets of gassers from end line to end line.

6-count burpee x 13 IC while Semi-Gloss made up his lap.  He never did the burpees.

Plank rail walk up the ramp back to launch lot.

People’s chair for about 4 minutes.

One more Mary exercise – leg lifts x 25 IC.

Done.

Semi-Gloss posted after YHC promised not much running, and he still came in late after the 1-lap we ran; but he did make it up.  Prohibition said he’d rather do the lap and skip the burpees…don’t blame him.  Speaking of Pro…he, Hairball, Strawberry and Swiper did a 3ish mile pre-run.  T-claps.

Hadn’t seen Teddy and Swede in a long time – good to see you fellas.  And a Kotters to Bugeater; the happy Nebraskan is making a comeback!

Also learned today that Ickey Shuffle has never seen the movie “The Sandlot”…that might help explain the horrific swing with the tennis racket.  On the 2nd round, he whiffed, then fouled one off, and then hit a slow comebacker to the pitcher….yikes!

One Eye was out front on the gassers and the warm-up lap.  That man can run, and he flat out makes the headband work.

Always a privilege and pleasure to Q.  Thanks to Dear Abby & Buttermaker for tapping YHC to do so.  Be sure you tell them I did an awesome job….maybe not…but it was something a bit different.  Hairball told YHC we went exactly a mile…that’s a boot camp workout men.

“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Shlemiel, Schlemazel, Hasenpfeffer Incorporated”

No SF since both site Q’s were AWOL; but after a brief disclaimer, 27 pax posted in the Monday morning gloom at Base Camp.  Site Q emeritus – Fireman Ed – posted, so there was some sense of institutional knowledge….or something like that.

The Thang:

Pax in plank while disclaimed and while we waited for the LIFO’s.

Jog to the track for one lap.

Since the SCMS football field was in its habitual soup-like state, we circled up for COP in the high jump 1/2 ring.

COP:

IW x 20 IC

Slow Squat x 10 IC

Rockhopper x 10 IC

LBC x 13 IC

6-Count Burpee x 10 IC

Partner up

6 Count Burpee x 8 IC

Ye Olde Moleskine:

Big group this morning with 2 FNG’s – Shotz and Chin Music.  Welcome guys, and keep coming out.  It’s never easy (shouldn’t be), but it will get easier….somewhat.

Some good mumblechatter this morning.  Appreciate Simba & Goonie tapping me, though Fireman Ed took some credit as he said I was the last Q he lined up before retiring from a 2+ year illustrious Site Q career at Base Camp.

YHC had to audible a bit; forgot how poorly the gridiron drains at SCMS.  Didn’t want to lose one of the pax in the quicksand.

Introduced or re-introduced a couple exercises to the pax, and finished with SSH’s lest some of the pax have a panic attack.

Enjoyed it fellas.  Always love Q’ing the pax, and grateful for the fellowship.  Sound off in comments on noteworthy or not-so-noteworthy things – a lot going on among the 27 pax out there.

T-claps to Jamboree for running in.  He lives at least 4 miles from  Base Camp.  #oldmanstrong

Thanks to Big Top for taking us out in COT with the prayer.  And thanks to Freedom & Bo-Peep for the assists on the nicknames.  Good work.  BTW, Bo-Peep is one of the finest nicknames in all of F3.

Have a good week men.  Go serve and make a difference!
