Why So Resistant to Change?

17 men gathered at SCMC for a trip to Davies Park for a combination of some running, merkins (and merkin related activities), with a few new things thrown in which got mixed reviews.

The Thang:

Mosey from SCMC to Davies Park

Circle up in the parking lot and start with some Mary:

LBC X 20

Flutter X 20

Wave of Merkins (we will get back to this)

Mosey over to the hill that takes you down to the dog park and partner up:

Partner #1 – Run to the button doing 3 burpees at each light pole on the way down and 10 diamond merkins at each pole on the way up

Partner #2 – Wide armed merkin X 5, LBC X 10, double squat X 15, and side straddle hop X 20 (repeat until your partner gets back and flap jack)

Bear Crawl Inch Worm:

Form 2 lines with each PAX in a plank position with his head at the heels of the PAX in front of him.  PAX in the back bear crawls to the front while the others stay in the plank position.  When the PAX gets to the front of the line, the next in the back does the same.  Similar to an Indian Run but only doing a bear crawl.

Mosey back to SCMC and:

All you got from one end of the parking lot and back X 2.

Round of Mary including Russian Twist, Heals to Heaven, and something Spackler called out which I I have no idea what its called.

Moleskin:

Even with the recent car break-ins (me being one of them) I decided to lead an off-campus workout down to Davies Park.  I heard a few negative comments about this (you shall remain nameless) but needed to change it up a bit.  The goal was to try and use the soccer field for the majority of the workout but unfortunately the ladies were there that don’t take too kindly to the boys of F3 intruding on their “turf”.  Went to Plan B and headed to the parking lot.

Feeling that some of the usual exercises get a bit stale at times, I looked to change it up.  This wasn’t 100% successful.  I went with a exercise called Wave of Merkins.  Basically, circle up in a plank, Q starts with 1 push up while remaining PAX stay planked.  Moving counter clock-wise each PAX repeated 1 merkin.  Repeat until 10 was the goal.  I could tell this wasn’t a good idea with 17 men so we modified to 5 rounds.  Truth be told, likely a good exercise with a much smaller group.  Quite  few were caught cutting corners on the planking but will remain nameless (ie, Spackler).  The Bear Crawl Inch Worm was met with less resistance but I think the jury is still out on that one.  You can grab some new workout ideas on F3nation.com if you want to try and change up your next Q.

All in all….felt like the 45 minutes was productive.  A lot of regulars and a few faces I haven’t seen in a while.  Pretty certain that Puddin’ sharted himself during the Mary at the end which was the only real downer of the workout.  Always a pleasure leading you guys.  Looking forward to next time.

Announcements:

Happy Hour today at the Lodge.  Spacker will be there around lunch time but for the rest of us, the hours are more like 4-6pm.

Keep your head on a swivel with the recent car break-ins.  Bring your ID in your car but leave your wallet at home.  Park in a well lit area if possible.

17.25 Posted for a trip to the ARBO and stroll down Providence Road

The Thang:

  • Leave out of the parking lot and cover about 1.2miles in route to the ARBO parking lot.
  • Circle up by the ABC store for a brief warm-up of a mere 20 x SSH
  • Start with 10 merkins and repeat at each speed bump until reaching Providence Road (100 in total)
  • Make our way down to the bottom of Providence Road where the entrance to Providence Plantation is.  Quick plank to regroup the PAX.
  • Head straight back up the hill in the direction where we came in 2 groups each knocking out a pretty long Indian Run.
  • Head back into the ARBO by the FireStone and partner up for a game of Catch Me if You Can back to the ABC Store.
  • Back into RainTree for some suicides followed by a mosey back towards the school.
  • Regrouped for an “all you got” for the last 150yds or so.
  • Due to poor timing on my part, we still had a few minutes left and TL was quick to point out that he hadn’t gotten his moneys worth so we ended with 4 50yd sprints.

Moleskin:

I need to start by saying that this Q for me wouldn’t have been possible without the mentoring of Mr. Purple Haze.  I’m truly a better Q for having had him there.  Without him, I wouldn’t have had anyone questioning when we were going to make our first stop, anyone to correct the volume of my voice when we circled up at the ARBO, nobody questioning the appropriateness of when and where to take a 10 count, etc.  And for this, I say “thank you, Haze”.

Although we came up a bit short of my 6 mile goal (about 5.5miles) by my count, I felt like the workout was what I needed.  Although there weren’t any FNG’s, there were a few new faces to me.  Icicle, Cain, and Utah, good to meet you gentlemen.  Very impressed with the way Utah pushed through.  Well done.

As we were heading back down 51 I hear “runner ahead” from the group and then I hear some chatter along the lines of “is that Mr. Brady”?  And then “It has to be…look how low that person has his arms”.  Sure enough, with about 3/4 of the workout completed, we find Mr. Brady who had been wondering Raintree looking for us for the previous 45 minutes.  Hence the 17.25 Pax…I just wouldn’t feel right about giving him full credit for this performance.

With the strong performance by the Panthers last night and the rain all night, I was expecting a much smaller group this morning.  However, I was impressed with the numbers.  And for those of you who were overserved at the Panthers game and couldn’t get out of the fart sack….you should be ashamed.  You know who you are….

I appreciate the opportunity given to me to lead the group this morning.  Job well done by all.  Looking forward to next time.

Announcements:

Hariball is urging us all to get out and vote today

TL is putting a FastTwitch team together for the Turkey Bowl which will be held on Thanksgiving morning at 7:30am.  I missed the location to reach out to TL if interested

Joe Davis run on 1/9

Death Valley heads off campus

16 PAX enjoyed/endured a soggy run up 51 to the private park (or so the signs say) at the C/O of 51 and Raintree for some running, hills, and partner workout.

The Thang:

Mosey up 51 to the park at Raintree

COP in the parking lot:

Side Straddle Hop X 10

Imperial Walker X 10

Merkin X 10

Mountain Climber X 10

Head up to the field: 10 merkins at one goal post followed by a bear crawl to the following post…10 more merkins and jog to the goal posts at the other end….repeat…back to the starting point.

Partner up on the goal line into groups of 2 PAX:  First group calls out an exercise and takes off down the field and rounds the opposing goal post.  All the while, the remaining PAX on the goal line are performing the named exercise.  Each group (8 total) takes their turn.  For some reason, there were a lot of burpee/burpee variation involved here.

Wheel barrow carry with same partner down the field….switch mid-way.

Mosey to the other end of the field and to the bottom of the grass hill:  A variation of the ladder here.  10 merkins at the bottom, 9 at the top, 8 at the bottom, etc. until you get to 1.

Short mosey to the picnic table for a ladder of step-ups and dips.  Started at 8 and went down to 1.

Back to home base for a bit of Mary.

Moleskin:  First off, props to Stone Cold and Semi for giving me the heads-up on the Park General at Davies.  I had intended to head there but was told it would likely cause an altercation with the lady that has her “pay to play” class there Wednesday mornings.  I certainly wasn’t looking to get my *ss handed to me at 5:30am by some female drill sergeant in front of this group.  Likely something I would never live down.

I was stoked to get a few props on my choice of tank-top right out of the gate (Thanks Sky Walker and Puddin’).  Puddin’ mumbled something about not being able to “pull that look off” which I immediately questioned.  There was some grumbling about the run to the park and something about “this not being Fast Twitch” (ie, Sky Walker…he was quite chatty this morning) but overall most kept the complaining to a minimum.  The fields were wet but it was nice to go to an off campus party for a change.  Stage Coach had a sweet idea to take the longer and hilly way back to home base which drew some heckling from the group.  Lastly, it appears Semi Gloss took Spackler up on his suggestion from Fast Twitch to up his wardrobe from youth to adult size.  Well played.  We all thank you for that.  Thanks for letting me lead you all on my virgin Death Valley Q.  Enjoyed it and look forward to doing it again soon.

Announcements:  Joust is back at Charlotte Christian this Friday on the new fields.  Semi’s BRR team is in need of a driver.
