The Deck is Calling but will we ever get there…

Ironically this is the first time YHC has had the opportunity to Q since taking over as co-site Q of Bagpipe – mainly due to injury. YHC was SO glad to be able to share some of the muscle memory with the PAX as it was the perfect morning to go on an adventure. Well…not too much of an adventure but enough to make some of the early mumblechatter wonder where we were going and if we would end up in a deck since the sprinkle was starting to melt away some of the manly PAX’s egos. But I digress.

Lets take a step back for a moment…

When YHC first pulled in there was already some mumble as to if YHC would show, this was even further exacerbated by the fact that the PAX refused to circle up where they usually do and were meandering through the Vine parking lot like a pack of dogs that lost their Alpha. Unfortunately for them that Alpha never showed but YHC did, and in some aspect was able to untangle the web of confusion that helped in regaining the PAX’s confidence in YHC – only for a little while that is.

This is where the confusion really began…Paper Jam yelling that this is definitely not SWIFT was one comment I heard (but not sure why he cares since he is definitely a runner and enjoys this sh*t) as we ran about .8 miles before warming up. Luckily for the PAX that warm up run was all downhill. Unfortunately for the PAX, if they truly wanted to see the warmth and comfort of the parking deck they would have to climb back out. So that’s what we did after completing a few merkins, side straddle hops and squats.

So about another mile in (12min 47sec later) we found ourselves at the deck. Immediately we jumped into what YHC had planned for the main event. Ok, so I called 5 rounds for this and I think we realistically only had time for 2 but WTH. So this is what we did. At the bottom of the deck we partnered up. Wheelbarrow to the top of the first hill, 10 hand slap merkins. Run opposite staircase as partner to top where you meet up and complete another wheelbarrow (opposite partner) followed by 10 hand slap sit ups. Repeato.

We had a little time left over so we put in a little leg work with peoples chair and counted until YHCs legs about collapsed.

Mosey over to the nearest parking lot where we finished off with some Mary and headed back to COT.

Everyone looked strong out there today and FNG Disabled List (not sure how he got this but cant wait to find out) was out front right away. A Chunder groupie so no doubt he was going to be. Hard to be slow when you are 12 years old.

YHC had to make a quick exit so tagalong took the lead at COT – appreciate it brother! 19 was the count but missed 2. Sorry, if you know who you are feel free to comment below.

Bro, Do You Even Legs Day?

12 men showed for sharpening on the #F3Anvil this morning. It was leg day. Here’s what we did.

The Thang

A brief but thorough disclaimer was given and then we slowed moseyed to wait for the stragglers. After picking up everyone, we ran up the main Calvary thoroughfare to the parking lot across from the hotbox and circled up for COP… IWs x 10IC, MCs x 10IC and the Low Slow Squat x 10IC. From there, we cut across campus to the rock pile by the roundabout. Grab a lifting rock, not for running but one that would make McGee proud. We circled up for some leg day work.

  •  Squats x 10IC
  • Good Mornings x 10IC
  • TeaBag Squats x 10IC

Mosey to the bottom of entrance at 51 for some stop motion lunge walk. After about 10 or so movements of that, we ran around the roundabout and back to our rocks.

  • Lunges x 10IC
  • Side Lunges x 10IC
  • Dancing With The Stars x 10IC (each leg, no rock)

Mosey back to the entrance at 51 for some stop motion backward lunge walk. Same thing, 10 movements or so before taking off in a backwards run for bit then forward around the roundabout.

After that, we returned our rocks and ran across to the little hill by the soccer fields. There, we did a set of 11s, with Jump Squats at the top and Sister Mary Catherines at the bottom. McGee then led us in some Baryshnikov x 10IC (each leg). He led as YHC is not coordinated enough to lead these.

From there, we moseyed up to the hotbox for 3 sets of 10 Lil’ Hazes (each leg) and 10 One-Legged Squats (each leg). We did some People’s Chair to kill some time before moseying to the Avenue of Trees. To appease the crowd and because my legs hurt, we ran the Avenue of Trees stopping at each tree for 5 Merkins.

A mosey back to our launch point for some Mary: LBCs x 10IC, Flutters x 10IC, Toe-Tap Crunches x 10IC and Straight-Leg Lifts x 10IC. Closed it out with 10 Burpees OYO.

Moleskine

Solid group of men this morning but certainly a slower arriving crowd than normal. For a bit, thought it might just be YHC and The Wall, in which case we could’ve done this workout in The Fairways fitness center, where you can get a lot done on a 3 speed treadmill, a bowflex and pair of wrist weights.

Been a while since YHC’s had a leg workout…the massive pecs and biceps were beginning to dwarf the legs. So to keep from becoming that guy in the leg day memes, deciding we tackle the legs. Not sure about the rest of the Pax but I know I was feeling the burn. A good buddy (the Pax formerly know as Radar) always said that if you break the legs, you break the spirit. And it was quiet under the hotbox toward the end…so I assume this one either hurt the Pax. Or bored them.

Good to see Bugeater back out in the gloom. And riding over with Scratch & Win, who has his VQ tomorrow at #F3Hydra. Lewinsky ran in…and turned down S&W’s offer for a ride back home…solid. The Wall is getting stronger and stronger.

McGee doesn’t check Twitter. But he is a Sign-Up Genius wiz.

Dirty Dozen for an “Easy” Workout

13 PAX got an easy workout at Thrive at Carolina Courts: Shake N Bake, Bernanke, Thurston, Bullwinkle, Hairband, Lamont, Hoffa, Glass Joe, Shepherd, Lumberjack, Espresso, E-Harmony, Bonhoeffer

The Warmup

Took a lap around the gym counterclockwise to get the uphill.

  1. sidestraddle hops X 21
  2. Imperial walkers X 21
  3. slow windmills X 10
  4. squats X 21

The Thang

  1. Front parking lot > Starfish: 5 squat pushups in middle each time … Mountain Climbers X 15 … Dry Docks X 15 … LBCs X 21 … Imperial Walkers X 15
  2. 15 American Hammers
  3. Mosey to track > 15 jump squats at 3 & 9 o’clock … 15 lunges each leg (30) 6 & 12 0’clock
  4. Mosey to hill at north road > 10 X up and down the hill, once backwards, faster for last 3
  5. Mosey to Volleyball Courts > split into teams: 15 step-ups each leg (30 total) while partner does dips … 10 jump squats in sand while partner does merckens … repeato
  6. Return to launch.
  7. Mary > back scratchers, Freddy Mercuries, dying cockroaches, WWII situps, shoulder clap pushups, planks
  8. El fin.

Moleskine

With Bonhoeffer fresh off Q school, everyone’s high hopes were bound to be shattered.

Glass Joe didn’t wait to phewting mumblechatter while we ran so far around the gym. When we got back, we found Bullwinkle … “What time does the 0530 workout start?” … cue 5 Burpwinkles.

During stretching, a couple of hecklers who went to Bros, Brews, & Bibles on Sunday tried (successfully) to distract the Q with appropriate jokes about things you’ll have to attend B3 next time to be privy too.

We started with ye ole Starfish in the front parking lot. Since the Q doesn’t like how Burpies grind his spine, we did alternative burpies “squat pushups” in the center, 5 after each starfish leg. 4 corners were 15 X Mountain Climbers, Dry Docks, LBCs, & Imperial Walkers. We did 2 rounds.

21 American Hammers on your own. Lots of complaints about it not being time for Mary yet. After all, who wants nice abs anyway?

We moseyed to the modified “track” around the soccer field, had to run up to the sidewalk at the road and down the grass hill at the side.

  • 15 jump squats at 3 & 9 o’clock
  • 15 lunges each leg (30) 6 & 12 0’clock
  • Go back and get the 6 o’clock

To the north hill by the road. We kept it simple … no 7s … and JUST ran up and down the hill 10 X. Mixed it up with one backwards and the last 3 faster than before. Funny, no one complained about how easy this was. Also funny how many of us didn’t want to touch the fence and the sidewalk … apparent confusion about top and bottom (that’s what she said).

We moseyed back toward the volleyball courts, and Hairband thought he’d crack at the Q that they only went that way because he left his jacket. But E-Harmony knew the real truth.

At the volleyball courts, we split into partners (w/ one threesome) and did a double circuit of fun.

  • 15 step-ups each leg (30 total) while the other partner did endless dips … switch.  Then 10 jump squats in the sand (glad the threatening rain held off so we’d have dry sand) while partner does endless merckens … repeato … and of course, Q saved the sand till the end so we wouldn’t get blisters.
  • For all Glass Joe’s mumblechatter, he didn’t want to get his painted toenails dirty in the sand, so he stayed on the grass for super easy jump squats.

Back in the parking lot during Mary, we tried a mix to hit all our ab muscles >

  • back scratchers (obliques)
  • Freddy Mercuries (lower & obliques)
  • dying cockroaches (lower & obliques)
  • WWII situps (high abs)
  • shoulder clap pushups (all abs)
  • planks w/ arm raises (all abs)

Mosey back to launch for COT.

Moleskin:

YHC had never posted at the Cerberus before so a little site recon was necessary a few days before. The possibilities are endless with an AO like this, although I couldn’t get away from the parking deck… I have also not posted where that has been incorporated either. This workout was very shoulder intensive and for that the PAX can thank Tolkien and Thin Mint. YHC possibly had the most unimpressive part of Brolmpics recently, on the bear crawl portion of the final event. It basically started with a Pete Rose slide on the wet grass and ended looking like a toddler learning how to crawl with one arm behind its back. Rightfully so, Tolkien and Thin Mint jumped at the opportunity to encourage me call me out mid crawl and haven’t let me live it down to date. I made the comment on twitter that my next Q would be nothing but bear crawls… while this Q wasn’t entirely bear crawls, it sure seemed like it. Hope everyone enjoyed the pain as much as I did. Not surprised Tolkien and Thin Mint didn’t post.

YHC really enjoyed this AO and getting to mix it up with F3 guys from SOB, UC, and A51. If you haven’t made it out to Cerberus yet, make it a priority one Friday AM. Nice weekly convergence of all regions looking for a good beat down. Great to see a FNG (Slide Rule) out there today, welcome and hope to see you again soon!

Thanks to Snowflake for the takeout and thanks to Alf, Argonaut, and Transporter for the opportunity to lead.

A not-so-subtle bit of #mumblechatter from Woodie accusing YHC of inflicting serious damage at a long ago #F3Outland Q is all the validation YHC needs to know the PAX #embrace(d)thesuck.

Run-on sentences aside, heck of a job by 8 strong men running the diamond…err…Triangle!

Muchisimo Chesto

27 men showed up at Flash this morning, no FNGs this time.
I had no plan other than go heavy on the upper body, and I think at succeeded……..

Ran around the parking lot at the front then went back to the starting point for COP.
Plank waiting for the six.
SSH IC x 30
Imperial Walkers

The thang:
Decided to introduce the UC Pax to Plank Webb’s it went like this:
Pax gather in small circle holding the plank for the entire exercise. Start with plank position, do 1 merkin and 4 shoulder taps, then 2 merkins and 8 shoulder taps, then 3 merkins and 12 shoulder taps……..all the way up to 10 merkins and 40 shoulder taps. Noticed some reluctancy in the beginning of this exercise which it grew into a chorus of grunting, not sure if was a hit or not, may need to try it a few more times to see.

Mosey to the front parking lot run to each light and do 5 merkins to go all the way around then sprint back to starting point and gather pax, did some flutters while waiting on the six, did about 50 reps.

Mose to the front of the high school and grabbed some bench Planked it out with head close to bench for a 6 position move: hand on the bench, other hand on the bench, bring first hand down back to the ground, other hand to the ground and do a merken, we did this IC x 15.
Then we turned around with feet facing the bench, one foot on bench, other foot on bench do a push up, back to plank repeat IC x 15.

Mosey to the Hill to the side of the high school, do 10 merkins, 10 wide arm, 10 diamond, run up the hill 5 times, going around trees, rock, power boxes and doing 2 burpees the first time back down, increasing by one burpee working all the way of to 6 burpee then repeat the 10,10,10 merkins from the beginning. Did Hills to Heaven waiting for the PAX.

Mosey to grassy area in front of the middle school for some Jack Webbs to finish killing the shoulders and pecks.

Went back to launch for COT.

The Moleskin:
Thank for the opportunity to lead this group of men, was good to see some faces I haven’t seen in a while as well as new faces among the PAX. Solid effort by everyone, I hope everyone enjoyed the workout. I think we did over 260 Merkins, will definitely feel this one, and I hope everyone comes back to F3 and we don’t have any Orvilles.

Thank you Moneyball for taking us out.

Have a great week brothers,

Folsom Hill

11 of Ballantyne’s finest decided that a 35-degree Saturday morning was a beautiful time to arise and embrace the suck. With visions of post-workout, free chicken biscuits in our minds (surprise bonus!), we set off to explore new territory and name a new hill.

Goonie’s M: You guys have a weird name for everything.
Goonie: Pretty much
M: Why?
Goonie: Because we can….

The Thang:

Mosey through the Best Buy parking lot, cross Rea, gather at the lot between the gas station and Target for some COP: IW x 15 IC, Windmills x 10 IC, Tempo Merkins x 11. At this point, someone pointed out that somewhere, some prison inmates were probably doing the same thing as us. For the first time (and definitely not the last), it was pointed out that this was absolutely not as bad as prison. Mosey north on Rea to Parks Farm Ln. We thought of turning right to go pick up Paper Jam, but there was a pleasant little hill waiting our arrival. Turn left and stop at the intersection of Parks Farm and Gander.

What was to become “Folsom Hill” is an almost quarter-mile long incline with a pretty steep final hundred yards. It’s not the Murderhorn, but it’s pretty nasty. So, we decided to give it a little love.

Round 1: Sprint up hill, recover with 3 merkins at each of the 25 trees on the way back down
Round 2: Sprint up, recover back down with 3 squats at each tree
Round 3: Sprint up, recover with 1 burpee at each tree

Pax frequently reminded each other that it wasn’t as bad as prison. We did some Mary between rounds to collect the six. Once done, we headed back toward launch. Stopped for some Merkins and plank along the way to let the six catch up. Stopped by the fountains between Bravo and Brixx for a round of 15 incline merkins, 10 step-ups (each leg) and 15 decline merkins. Headed back toward Chick Fil-A with a few minutes to spare. Stopped at the bank parking lot for 10 6-inch crunches, then 50 LBCs OYO, run up to Rea, around the corner on Ardrey Kell, and back into the CFA parking lot. We hit 4 miles right around 7:29:30. Goal accomplished. Great work by all. Done.

Ye Olde Nekkid Moleskine:

YHC was cutting through on Parks Farm Ln. one day and discovered Folsom Hill. Once I measured the distance to CFA, a message went out to Fredo to put YHC on the Q schedule for da Vinci. YHC loves to find new territory and take the pax to new places, no matter what AO. Mission accomplished on this one. Fredo and Bucky both informed me they had never been to Parks Farm (that they knew of), so new territory was discovered.

When we arrived at the base, a gentleman was at his front porch lauding us for our dedication. After a few back-and-forth comments, Bucky invited him to join us. That was met with a “Good luck fellas, and a door slammed on us. Someone needs to learn the joys of the DRP.

Teddy, Lewinsky, Bucky, and YHC were out front most of the morning. Bucky just glides effortlessly. Lewinsky took off like a bat out of hell up the hill the first time and almost ran out of gas. Those young’uns need to learn how to ration energy. The dude can move, though. Teddy was putting in his usual quiet strong effort. Future Q tip: Teddy’s kryptonite is stairs. He does NOT like them.

We had some strong respects in our midst this morning. Fredo and Frehley’s doing what they always do – making us all hope we’re in that good of shape when we’re 70 years old, too. Chopper was the definition of persistence – he made sure he finished every last rep. Respect, brother!

Escobar was disappointed at the mileage. He was hoping for at least 5. We don’t know what got the better workout: Mighty Mite’s legs or his mouth. Unfortunately, they don’t have a smartwatch for that. Strawberry was pushing hard, even though he wasn’t feeling 100%. Scratch and Win reminded us all morning long: the workout may suck, but we all have it pretty good.

Thanks to Fredo and Bucky for letting YHC Q. Thanks to Chick Fil-A for the free chicken biscuits when you use the app. FYI, it takes multiple Clemson grads to download the CFA app and use it. Thanks to Scratch and Win for the takeout.

So we all agree there was in fact a speed-bump there?

After standing alone in front of the school for ten minutes, triggering some brief flashbacks to Coolrunnings, I noticed the string of cars going to the teacher lot, so moseyed over to thankfully discover my group waiting.

Warm-Up:

Mosey to the bus loop and gave the disclaimer

SSH x25

Merkins x10

LBC x20

Potato Pickers x10

The Thang:

Moseyed to the student parking lot to begin Snake Way (Delta had a much better name, but can’t remember it, so I’ll fall back on DBZ)

Along Snake Way (absent the one we started on), there are 9 speed bumps, and adding an additional burpee for each bump. In addition, between each bump, we ran the curves, and (mostly) bear crawled the straightaways (in my defense, it looked a bit shorter in my rose-tinted memory).

From there we moseyed to the half-wall, OUTSIDE THE TRACK, delaying briefly to lunge-walk across the bridge, where did 40 dips, 15 derkins, (in cadence) 20 air presses.

Moseyed to brickyard, grabbed two bricks, and circled up. Did 20 curls, 20 presses, 20 tricep extensions in civilian count. Dropped to the ground to do 20 flutters in cadence, got back up with the bricks for 10 curls, 10 presses, 10 tricep extensions.

Started to go down trail, until it finally hit me how dark it was, so circled through a bit of wet grass to go back the way we came (another brief delay to lunge walk back across bridge), and headed back to the start.

Next was a set of suicides, run to each “speed-bump”, and do 15 squats, run back to start, run to next “speed-bump”, etc.

Finally, did a bit of planking to finish out the last minute of the workout.

Bottlecap took us out.

Moleskin:

Thank you guys for sticking with me this morning, it’s been a few months (maybe closer to a year) since I last led a workout. It was fantastic to see everyone’s effort (particularly along Snake Way), and a always an inspiring sight. Still, just surprised the attorney managed to be more concise than the Manual.

A Taste of the Swimming World

19 men gathered at skunkworks for the first time in March. The weather was a little cold, with a hint of rain in the air. Thankfully the rain held off so that we could get some kettlebell work in. Here’s the back blast:
The warmup consisted of in cadence to a count of 15 side shuttle hops, 10 mountain climbers, 10 high knees, 10 butt kicks, 10 little baby arm circles forward, and 10 imperial walkers.
In swimming the next set is the warm up set. We did repetitions of 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 of two different exercises OYO with no break. The two exercises were side lateral hops and kettle bell swings. Then we recovered.
The next set was the pre-set, which can sometimes be scary. This one wasn’t too bad though. We partnered up and did 3 rounds of one partner doing an exercise and the other partner running a lap around the mini-track. Flapjack after one partner returns. The 3 exercises were kettlebell merkins, bicep curls, and tricep extensions. We then rinsed and repeated.
Now for the main set. For this we stuck with our partners and did catch me if you can with 10 Carolina Drydocks all the way down to the base of the hill. We then did 3 rds of the following:
1 partner ran up the hill did 10 lunges and ran back down while the other partner did a set of exercises. The partners then flapjacked. The exercise were right arm swings, right arm cleans, and right arm snatches. The next rd was the same exercise but with the left arm. The last round was double kettle bells with the last exercise being shoulder presses. For this last round we ran up the hill backwards and did backward lunges.
Lastly we ran sprints. Base of the hill to the first median and back. base of the hill to the second median and back, etc. All the way to the 4th median at the church. Then ran back to the base with our bells and we were done. Great work from all!
