Ascent/Olympus – Today’s Episode: We Rise and Stand Together…or…Time for a SMOKE Break!

9 PAX posted in the early Saturday gloom to partake in YHC’s Q for a properly balanced meal.

YHC had offered a 3 mile pre-run in advance of Ascent/Olympus’ start time, but the internet was clearly too scared of the dark to join me, so I went on my own haunted hayride through Ye Olde Providence Neighbourhood (they do it up right for Halloween, all).  I run back to the parking lot with two minutes to spare before kickoff.  3mi extra credit done.  5.0 GPA on 4.0 scale.

With the disclaimer duly given – clear instruction that this was a moderate workout and YHC was not providing any fitness instruction, and that the PAX duly were not paying me to do so, as well as a very lawyerly underscore of each individual (and not F3) assuming maximum liability for any action undertaken – we R-U-N-N-O-F-T to the baby track for two laps.

Due to poor planning on YHC’s part, all of my time and distance keeping devices were dead, so I co-Q’d the workout with Pele’s sports watch.

COP:
SSH x30
IW x30
LSS x30
Merkins x10

The Thang:

Appetizer:
Mosey to the Wesley United Meth Rock Pile, grab a legitimate bicep curling and shoulder pressing rock – plank up and wait for the 6, then stop planking and do some Mary. Everyone here?  Recover.

Partner up.
ROUND 1:  Thing 1 shall run ‘round ye olde churche, while Thing 2 dost complete extension bicep curls. Flapjack, Repeato x1

ROUND 2:  Thing 1 – run ye lap, while Thing 2 dost complete extension shoulder presses. Flapjack, Repeato x1

Done? Nope.

Main course:
Time for our union-mandated SMOKE break.

Mosey back over to the school, grab some wall, hold a people’s chair and do 100 arm raises IC. Shoulders & Quads seasoned.

A few 10 counts later and we are bear crawling across lot, reverse bear crawl back whence ye came.  PAX seemed pretty spry and chipper during the forward bear crawl.  Chatter came to screeching halt during reverse bear crawl.  Sony, left in disbelief at what his legs & shoulders were just put through, remarked that YHC was probably just making these things up, b/c reverse bear crawls aren’t real.  Oh, they’re real alright.  While on the topic, it’s a good thing Geraldo brought enough testosterone to share w/all of us.  Dude was rucking 40 lbs while all this abuse was going on.

Mosey to playground area, 50 dips OYO.  Triceps smoked.

Done? Nope, mosey over to picnic tables, plank up for the 6 to roll in, then get started with 100 step ups each leg…Each. Leg.  Glutes and Quads smoked.

  • Not sure anyone was counting, but if they were, I’m sure that I did 1,000 and I’m sure Sony only did 10, but in a “whose line is it anyway” sort of points tally.   Early Gamecock victory to make up for the L we’ll get this evening.

Mosey to practice field, huddle up in a circle shoulder to shoulder for the Wave of Merkins (not often broken out, but very much a part of the lexicon). Circled up, got into plank position, first person did one merkin, then the next person to the right does a merkin, yadda yadda until we got back to the first person who then performed 2 merkins, repeato all the way up to 5.  The cookbook says up to 10 and back down, but hey, this is a moderate workout. Arms, Core, Shoulders smoking nicely.

Everyone lined up, lunge walk to the temporary construction light on field (the wacker light, Mallcop’s favorite). Lunge walk back. Quads a little overcooked, but we’ll serve them as burnt ends at Midwood Smokehouse.

Mosey back to the line for what I’ve come to know as Planker’s Delight.  PAX planked shoulder to shoulder, and in orderly fashion, each PAX went down the line doing one hand slap merkin with every other man until everyone was sufficiently handslapped.

Shoulders completely SMOKED.

Dessert:
Done yet? Nope. With 4 minutes to go, mosey back to parking lot in time for some Mary.  LBCs x30, dolley x30, protractor x 2 rounds, and time was called.

Tclaps to Drop Thrill for taking us out.

The Moleskin:
COT had your usual announcements, name-o-rama.

  • I must admit that my original plan for this morning was no less than a 3-3.5 mile circuit to be conducted throughout Old Providence neighborhood. However, based on survey of the battlefield and troop reserves, called an audible which had far less running, but every bit as much pain to be felt in quads.
  • Always good to see Drano out in the gloom. Brother and me have been doing the 6am Java Run for the last 2-3 months (I think?) and it shows.  Excellent push out there Drano.
  • Continue to be inspired by Geraldo’s RUCK game. My beard grew another inch just by seeing him do basically all the above w/the RUCK on his back.  No lie, I’m looking at getting a RUCK myself and following in his footsteps
  • Jet Fuel and I hung together for the moseys. Turns out Ye Olde Providence is his neck of the woods and didn’t need me to remind him about how awesome his neighborhood truly is. M and I loved renting in the area and were sad to leave it.
  • Snoopy’s got some wheels, errbody! He’s moving pretty fast these days. We need to get this guy on the Joe Davis Express.  Btw, do you need a rename now that you guys fired Snoopy from your company?
  • Mall Cop putting in work and slugging it out every step of the way. Good hustle out there, brother.  Pounding.
  • Drop Thrill – Always good to see you out here.

Real tomato ketchup, Ed?

Only the best for those who chose The Rock this morning. The South African delegation was all ready when I rolled in at 6:56, plenty early. I planted the shovel flag (one of a few that regularly fly in Area 51). Hammer and Wolfman came in hot at 7:00. Wolfman was dressed for January – save some of those layers for later big guy.

Slow yog over to the library parking lot. At my first Rock workout 3 years ago, Runstopper wore us out in that parking lot. I don’t think we’ve been back since, but it was nice to have new scenery. The giant Calvary parking lot just isn’t enough. Lots of traffic at 7:15 at the library – early, early voters I guess. Regardless, we got our usual warm up in (SSH, Squats, etc). Partner up for some here-and-theres with stuff mixed in. Over to the long part of the parking lot – run the loop (.2 miles maybe), 10 merkins, lap, 20 jump squats, lap, 30 LBCs. Repeat with a half of the loop. Unsuccessful attempt to get the guy doing squats and pullups on a tree branch to join us. What’s weirder than meeting guys in a church parking lot for a workout? Doing it by yourself in a library parking lot.

Indian run out of the parking lot, up to 51 and left to the first entrance. As we started the run, Hammer yelled something about his back and going home. So he left. Onward. (I checked on him later. He’s fine. Just old.)

Grab a lifting rock (avoiding giant anthills). Carry it over to the parking lot where we lined up abreast on one end. 10 curls, run to the first median and back. 15 curls, run to the second median. 10 curls, first median. Repeat (after trading rocks) with overhead press, tricep extensions, squats, and squat thrusters. We had to stop there before we got too yuge. Sometime during this segment, Boerewors said he had a bottle of home-brewed IPA in the car. So we had that to look forward to. Dingo chose the biggest rock, so he was killing it when he got to use the small ones that Wolfman and Boerewors picked.

Mosey back to the cars, stopping for some Mary near the fake grassy knoll. Finish with a few sprints. Done.

Boerewors made good on his claim and produced a solid IPA that he and the boys made. That’s right. We shared a beer in the parking lot of a church at 8:05 on a Saturday morning. Safe Lite didn’t hesitate to pop it with his wedding ring. Not his first one, methinks.

Beautiful fall morning out there, with the sun rising as we worked. Fall is awesome.

Language Barrier

8 straggled in for this Saturday’s edition of #F3DayZero. It was advertised as leg day. Here’s what we did:

The Thang

Mosey to the #YellowRose parking lot for COP:

  • IWs x 15 IC
  • MCs x 9 IC (interrupted by the entrance of the garbage truck)
  • Low Slow Squats x 15 IC

Due to lack of enthusiasm, we stopped there and ran down the Bevington loop to Brechin Hill for 7s. We did backwards runs on the evens.

  • Jump Squats at the top
  • Merkins at the bottom (not legs I know…but Bounce likes to stay swole)

Run back to McAlpine, entering through the back gate, and over to the rock pile for a lifting rock. Mosey to the baseline on the basketball court for some leg work.

  • Squats x 15 IC
  • Stop motion lunge walk to half court; sprint to opposite baseline and back
  • Straight leg dead lift x 15 IC
  • Stop motion backward lunge walk to half court; sprint to opposite baseline and back
  • Side lunges x 5 each leg
  • Stop motion lunge walk to half court (with rock this time); sprint to opposite baseline and back
  • Romanian dead lifts x 5 each leg

Return rock and mosey to front of school. Partner up. Partner A do called exercise. Partner B run loop. Flapjack to reach reps # as a team.

  • Left leg step-up bench squats x 100
  • Right leg step-up bench squats x 100
  • Left leg front squats x 50
  • Right leg front squats x 50

A round of #DWTS x 10 each leg.

Mosey to the wall for some brief People’s Chair. Then parking lot sprints x 3. Done.

The Moleskine

For years now, the men of DZ have been trying to #BillyZane the elderly Asian gentleman that walks the track at McAlpine. Spackler had a serious go at it this morning, hitting him up once during the leg set at the basketball court and then again at the front of the school during the hot laps. The first time Spack was met with a courteous smile…but a dismissing wave. The second time, another smile…and then a reply…his English is not very good. Spack’s that is, not the Asian gentleman.

That was not the only language barrier out there this morning:

  • The old man TR (age 52) trying to talk with Drago (age 19) about TR’s Jeep…disastrous.
  • Bounce…no one understands him at all most of the time…although you are able to make out an expletive about every fifth word or so.
  • Red Rocks is a quiet one though…just goes about his business, putting in solid work.
  • Teddy lets his running do the talking…probably no barrier there…yep, you’re fast.
  • McGee spent most the morning in the Qs ear…offering suggestions about how to make it harder. That one I understood…you suck Haze.

Key observation of the morning: Spack’s potion release brought forth a reference to Puddin’ Pop. Tiger Rag stated that Puddin’ Pop sounded like “green jello hitting a linoleum floor”.

Announcments

  • Christmas Party
  • Joe Davis Run

Sign up for both.

“…and I approve this message”.

A lucky group of 13 Pax climbed out of the fartsack to kick of their Friday with a DRP. Here is what went down:

Token warmup to let LIFO Scabby park and catch up.
SSH x 25
Merkins x 10

Partner up in groups of 3 for grinders. Abacus helped the State grads with the math.
One man from each team heads back near launch lot, land waits for relief. One man starts called exercise (Merkins, Squats, LBCs). One man runs between groups. Rotate through 3-4 cycles.

Head to the deck for some leg work.
Run forwards up one ramp, run backwards on next ramp. Alternate up to the top.
Bear crawl to other side of top deck, Mary x 15.
Bear crawl back, Mary x 15.
Run down steps, Rinse and repeat.
Burpees at top?

Ran across top deck to far stairs, run down for “treats”.
Back into groups of 3ish for Hairburners for 3-4 rounds.
Team Squats; take turns w Olympic plate! doing squats! until team reaches 100. Al Gore while you wait.
Mosey to practice field, line up.

On paper, this looked good. All facing one direction, shoulder to shoulder, Pax do 5 Burpees, then drop into Tunnel of Love position. Man on far left breaks off, does 5 more Burpees, and crawls thru the tunnel. Each man in turn, 5 Burpees, thru tunnel, back in position at the other end. 10 Burpees and 2 minutes of Plank can really suck.
Mary on the field.
Run back to plates and team splits time carrying back to YHC’s car. #TomSawyer
2 minutes of Mary and your done.

Great work by all. A lot of Larry Birds on the ramp runs.
It was a departure for mean not to do Pusharama. I trust everyone got their money’s worth. If not, see Mermaid for a full refund.

Booyah now reporting – We had 2 FNGs this week.  Sanka brought Elizabeth(hospital name is King so … and Safelight and Boerewors brought Haka.  He hails from New Zealand but Outback was already taken(yes, we know the Outback is in Australia) so he for some reason gets a wonderful and non-embarrassing name.
Another STRONG turnout at Peak 51.  Hope we don’t get skeered once the weather turns cold.

Take a tour of CCS

It was a fine Fall morning as the parking lot of CCS began to fill up. Dollywood apparently overslept and didn’t arrive till 5:25am – about 45min later than his normal time. I gave the disclaimer and off we went. Down the parking lot to the middle of the campus and circled up for COP. SSH x 20, 10 burpees, LSS x 20, 8 burpees, IW x 20, 6 burpees, peter parkers x 20, 4 burpees, MC x 20, 2 burpees.

Mosey to bottom of grand ma – run up and down 3 times w 10 merkins bt each run.

Go to goal line for 1 100 hrs gasser.

Mosey to top of stadium steps. Run to parking lot. G1 does lbcs while G2 runs to each light post and does 10 merkins. (3 light posts in all) run back and flap jack.

Mosey back to starting point. Everyone does 43 merkins to celebrate my bday yesterday.

Great group of men this morning!! Cheese curd started the chatter with complaining about yesterday’s music at Meathead. Something about 80s rock ballads – reminded him of all the girls that broke his heart. Bush again was called out for never coming up for air with all the socializing he had going on. Booya paid us a first time visit – Only lives 1.5 miles away! He and Ductwork doubled down with run ins from their respected hoods. Nice work! I think Joker is really Clark Kent in disguise as he once again slips in as the disclaimer is given and is seen driving away as we circle up for COT. Does anyone really know who the joker is? I could go on and on calling guys out but it’s Fri afternoon and I have other things to do. Sound off if you have comments! It’s always a privilege to Q!!

Announcements – sign up for Christmas party and Joe Davis run!!

COT

YE OLDE NAKED MOLESKINE
17 able bodied men descended upon Kevlar this morning to find Tiger Rag and Horsehead swinging their bells to the tunes of NSync. It reminded me of an awkward morning with Header back in my younger days when we swung away to the Eternal Flame…
After getting texts from Spackler last night saying how he had “burned way more calories at Orange Theory than any F3 workout” the goal was to get going quickly today limiting the warm up time and getting the heart rate racing. So after an abbreviated SSH and IW combo the clock was out to get to the merkins/squats/parker peter combos. During the second round of air squats that’s when the lightning bolt hit and all went to absolute pot. The back went, the legs tingled, and the plan was out the window. Guys were trying to Q-Jack for my own well being but as Winston Churchill once said “never, never, never give up!” Now I gave up working out but felt that the men of Kevlar needed guidance and direction and a fine playlist to get them motivated. I have no idea as to whether it was a decent workout but I do remember Alf whining after his 6h or 7th lap that “this wasn’t fun Friday anymore”.
Hope you got something out of it today. Thank you to Tackling Dummy for taking us out today. Have a good weekend lads!

Go Cubs Go!!

The Cubs are in the World Series!!  The Cubs are in the World Series!!  Yesssssirrrrrr!!  CUB-BIES!!  CUB-BIES! CUB-BIES!  If you haven’t heard, the Cubs are in the world series for the first time since 1945 and are looking to win their first title in 108 years…Shit that’s a long time.  Like, FOR-EV-ER #sandlot.  Curse that damn goat.  There are people at the bars in Wrigleyville drinking at 8am this morning.  For those who haven’t been to a Cubs game here’s how the experience goes: Head to Wrigleyville about 3 hours before the game.  Drink at the bars, at a friends place (inside our outside; season doesn’t matter) or on a rooftop until the game starts.  Then you watch the National Anthem and first pitch wherever you’re at and when that’s done, do you head to the game??  Nope you stay put and keep drinking.  Around the 3rd or 4th inning THEN you stumble into the stadium at which you consumer more beer that costs roughly $50 per can.  Well, not that much more like $8.75-9.50 (yes I looked it up).  You then spend about 90% of the next 6 or 7 innings socializing and 10% watching the game.  Mostly because the Cubs were garbage…Oh but how things have changed.  People show up on time and actually watch the game!  Shocking!  Granted there are still quite a few people who have the #oldCubs mentality.  But we can thank one man for the resurgence of the team…..Theo Epstein!!!  The man literally saved the franchise (Joe Maddon had something to do with it too #props #fistbump) and all those long suffering Cubs fans can finally rejoice that they’re in the big game.  Speaking of the big game, it’ll cost you about $3,000 on the LOW END for tickets, if you can find any.  Some seats have sold for $22K…Yes TWENTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS A PIECE.  #Insanity.  Being a Chicago native #bornintheburbs I’ve witnessed my fair share of Chicago celebrations.  We’ve had MJ and the Bulls in the 90’s.  The White Sox won it in..in, I don’t know, no one cares about the White Sox.  The Blackhawks have been amazing to watch with 3 titles (’10, ’13, ’15) in the past several years.  And yes, I’ve been to a handful of Cubs games.  But I can’t even fathom the record level of anticipation/craziness/drunkenness that will be happening today and for the next 3 games.  Bars are charging $100-250 cover and minimum $500 spent per table.  So, I’ll be sporting my Cubs shirt tonight while watching this amazing season/postseason happen all the while cheering silently as to no wake up the 2.0.  #FlyTheW

Oh, and we had 8 PAX show up for a workout led by YHC this morning.  Here’s what went down

THE THANG:

Disclaimer given by YHC.  No FNG’s so it was short and sweet.

Quick warm up with 10 of SSH, Merkins, LSS and off we went.

The RUN:

  1.  Mosey to light at Johnson and Brixham Hill.  Cross and jog #notmoseybutjog to corner of Johnston & Ballantyne Commons, turn Left. Continue jog until cross the 1st driveway, then 10 burpees OYO.  Run #notmoseynotjogbutrun to the next driveway and complete 10 Merkins OYO.  Repeat pattern until we hit Ballantyne Commons and N. Community House (we did 2 rounds of each).
  2. Left on N. Community House Road.  Repeat jog/run exchanges with Mary after each drive entrance.  Mary consisted of Flutter, Freddie Mercury, Mountain Climbers, American Hammer, and YHC’s revised Box Cutter (on 6, legs out (1), together (2), up (3), down (4)).  Make our way to parking lot of the British School on Endhaven.

The PARKING LOT:

  1.  Line up along white parking line.  Count off 1’s and 2’s.
    1. Shuffle to 2nd line, touch with foot and back.  10 total touches.  PAX were instructed to count on each touch.
    2. 1’s:10 pullups, 2’s: 20 dips on cubs.  Flap Jack.
    3. Repeat all 3 exercises.
  2. Start at white line again and burpee broad-jumps to the 4th line and back.
    1. 1’s: 10 pullups, 2’s: 10 curb merkins.

The RUN REPEAT:

  1. The 8 original PAX split into 2 groups (5 and 3) as Tussauds, Dolphin, Might Mite modified and headed back to the AO via a different route.  The 5 remaining PAX (Frehley’s, Fire Hazard, Cheddar, Soft Pretzel, YHC) repeated the run with the jog/run combo and Mary at the drive entrances on N. Community House.  Then repeated the jog/run combo w/ Merkins and Burpees along Ballantyne Commons.  2 final AYG’s to the AO where we met up with other PAX.
  2. COT, YHC quote “If I have all faith, so that I can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.”  1 Corinthians 13:2.  Challenged/encouraged all PAX to love as best they possibly can.  Be that shining light in your community.  Be the leaders at home.  Love your family.  Love your wife or significant other.  Dig deep into F3.  #ironSHARPNESiron.  Dolphin with the take out.

MOLESKIN:

Thanks to the 8 men who showed up for YHC’s 2nd Q.  After practicing my cadence in my run through yesterday AND in the car this morning #yesireallydid, I felt confident enough in my ability to lead the PAX in counting.  Well, I failed on the first try.  There was some snickering from Frehley’s and Tussauds and they informed me that the correct phrasing is “Ready position, exercise, move.”  not whatever garbage YHC was saying.  There was some audibles called during the Q as well because we ended up running short on time.  Wanted to do more at the parking lot but will save it for another time.  Big props to everyone who pushed and got better today.  It’s not easy getting up and showing up for a workout at 5:15.  It’s not easy running 4.75 miles, doing a bunch of burpees, merkins Mary, pullups etc.  But you all did it.  I appreciate all of you and appreciate the solid 3rd F today.

Highlight(s) of the Q:

Frehley’s showed up with about 2 minutes to spare and once he heard that YHC was Qing his response was “Oh Shit.”  #priceless #highlight1. Little did he know how true this statement would become because he needed a quick break on the run back and ended up burying his towel.  For all those counting that’s #3.  RIP 3rd towel.  #highlight2

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  1.  Sign up for the Xmas party – or Bean will destroy you on social media and Bunker might actually shoot you.  Heard he’s got guns.
  2.   YHC’s M is leading a clothing drive for her company 2ULaundry.  Dates are TBD but will be in December.  Anyone interested in donating, getting their workplace involved or helping lift/load let me know!!

The NMM:

  • A warmer than expected morning greeted us.
  • HighTide got out early for a pre-run, which made this workout extra challenging for him.  Nicely done!
  • I did not put together a playlist of music, but instead relied on my Amazon Prime music 80s Rock station to supply the tunage.  It took many of us back to our High School days of trying to get somewhere with our girlfriends.  Others it took back to hanging out in their crib.
  • Alf notices that our circle kept getting closer with each 80s love ballad.  It began to get a little uncomfortable.
  • It’s good to see Cheese curd starting to get the hang of the KB!
  • Thanks for the opportunity to lead, I’m grateful!
  • Thanks Tulip for taking us out!
