Moleskinsssss
Oh man. Last time I was at DMZ it was still 2016. My last Q was almost a year ago! Been too long! Also, only posting at 2 bootcamps in 2017 shows. I am spent. We did 200+ merkins and 200+ squats.

Runstopper’s son just started at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO #prouddad. But I think know why he chose CO for college. There are over 600 dispensaries in CO. That is more than the number of locations of McDonalds, Starbucks and 7-Elevens combined! Also, in 2015, Coloradoians purchased 121 tons of weed. If my math is right, that is 329,414,938 joints (average joint is 0.32 grams). Colorado has a population of 5,541,000 (2016). That is a remarkable 59.5 joints per person per year. I gotta say, CO is crushing weed. The productivity of CO has be off the charts. Just kidding, Runstopper, I’m sure he’s staying pure. Or maybe he has Glaucoma, like the rest of the population of CO.

Speaking of high this morning, Rock skipped most driveways both times. Bout Time was fast. Aquafresh and Hamlet were arguing like an old couple about some new exercise named a Jerkin. Great to see Lewinski and Scratch & Win out there!

Annoucements:
On 11/9/2017, Runstopper is looking for runners to run with a veteran who is running 31 marathons in 31 days in 31 different cities. He will be running around Freedom Park at 7am. Great idea and a great cause!

I Doubt Brave Faithful Will Believe

Been looking forward to this ever since me and Wildturkey switched AO Q’s. He’ll be coming to daVinci one day soon. Stay tuned. You guys have seen Tagalong and Shrinkwrap traveling together right? Not sure if they switch it up and not sure it matters, but Tagalong came up to where we were gathering and said “who’s on Q?”. Someone responded “Fredo”. And he let out a solid groan. So…not sure how to take that one, guess I better live up to the hype.

  • Not sure I lived up to the hype, but Tagalong can kill it and stayed out front most of the morning. (although he was laying down when me and MarketTimer reached the top deck a few seconds behind him)
  • Hula Girl continues to show and remembers names and brings it.
  • Great group of guys this morning. Solid effort by all.

MarketTimer thanks for the takeout.

Moleskin:

As usual, a strong group at Joust today. With the smaller crowd there was nowhere to hide. That being said, not many refusniks out there, besides more than a few “knee brace adjustments” by Semi.

We covered 2.5 miles today – most of it on stadium steps and Grandma Mtn. Solid work by all.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead. Always an honor.

Hills Hills Hills and More Hills

  1. I was supposed to Q this AO a month ago and instead was ailed with the fartsack.  Fast forward a month later and I almost forgot that I signed up to Q.  In fact, it hit me so last minute that I woke up early this morning and wrote up the entire workout.
  2. Snookie approached me with a special request of not a lot of running this morning.  You know what that means….let’s MOSEY!

At what seemed to be a short mosey from one end of the parking lot to the other, soon the PAX would discover that it was to be naught.

COP

15 SSH IC

5 Burpees OYO

15 Imperial Walkers IC

15 Hillbillies IC

Continue the mosey up the hill, past the farmers market and across the street to Don Griffin Park.  Stop on the other side of baseball field.

The Thang

Burpback Mountain

Partner Up

Partner 1 Runs backward up the hill and forward down 5x

Partner 2 Does Burpees at the bottom

Switch,  Rinse and repeat until cumulative burpees reach 100.  Since the geezers…I mean double respects teamed up together, it left Shepherd, I and Kiefer as odd men out.

Mosey over to the steeper hill… or the cliff if you want to be dramatic.

Everest

One leg lunge forward, one squat, other leg lunge forward, another squat until the top of the hill is reached.  This soon became a botched attempt as we had to bear crawl when the “cliff” turned into an actual cliff.

Once at the top of the hill, mosey back to Belk Tonawanda, specifically to the steep hill behind the bleachers

Heartbreak 1-2-3’s

Partner up again.  Seemed only fitting that we ended up with the same partners again.

Partner 1 run up the hill and back down.

Partner 2 do choice exercises.

Switch, rinse repeat until the following have been completed

  1. 100 Merkins
  2. 200 LBC’s
  3. 300 Squats

Just when you thought there couldn’t be anymore hill workouts, YHC threw in another two.

Triple Nickle

Run up the hill do 5x choice exercise, run to the bottom another 5x choice exercise.  Rinse and repeat 5 times.

Round 1. 5 bombjacks at the top, 5 bobby hurleys at the bottom

At this point the M interrupts the Q with a phone call on the digital Weinke.  Apparently wires were crossed and the memo did not get out about YHC Q’ing   The pax continue

Round 2. 5 burpees (pax heard bobby hurleys) 5 bombjacks at the bottom

Round 3. 5 Clap Merkins at the top 5 burpees at the bottom

Round 4. 5 CDD;s at the top 5 clap merkins at the bottom

Round 5. 5 LSS’s at the top 5 CDD’s at the bottom

Quadraphillia

Pax run up and down the hills backwards repeatedly until the Q calls time.

  1. During Burpback mountain Kiefer inquired if the cumulative of his and Shep’s burpees would count towards the aggregate.  Much to his disappointment, he found out the Glass Joe rules set a few months earlier that state only the highest of the two would be counted towards the aggregate.
  2.  YHC also encountered the infamous “Shep Count” in which at end of my first round of running during Burpback, Shep had already made it up to 27 burpees.
  3. The #mumblechatter was in full force today.  However, at some points turned conspiratorial as YHC was accused of plagiarizing or consulting with some unnamed PAX that rhymes with “pass moe” over the amount of hill exercises being done today
  4. Team Geezer(as you would have called yourselves), props to both of you for sticking it out during Heartbreak 1-2-3’s  I only hope to have the same type of energy and vigor when I reach that age.
  5. On a more serious note, it is a really good feeling when you can run from one park to another without stopping and catching your breath. It was an honor to lead you men this morning, and it is because of F3 that I have been able to make such great strides in my own physical health and well being.  I thank you

  • Mt Climbers

Mosey to rock pile and grab a smedium sized rock and head over to middle school alcove

Thang:

Over-sized Bucket Pong Competition

Break into 3 teams

The goal was to be the first to make all 4 buckets.  Losing teams had to do 20 burpees as penalty

  • Round 1: As PAX ran to pick up ball and shoot for bucket, remaining pack alternated between lat raises and overhead tricep press w/ rock
  • Round 2: As PAX ran to pick up ball and shoot for bucket, remaining pack alternated between shoulder raises and curls w/ rock
  • Round 3: As PAX ran to pick up ball and shoot for bucket, remaining pack alternated between dips and derkins

Finish with 5 minutes of Mary

Moleskin:

  • Weinke needs some improvement to up the intensity, but never the less allowed for some friendly competition
  • My Q game was thrown off by having Jingles arrive prior to 5:30 start, it ruined my rhythm
  • Dirty Bird was able to catch Recalculating cheating to give his team fighting chance, but did not impact results as DB’s team won 2 of 3 rounds
  • Mad Dog has been coming out for less then 2 weeks and has already surpassed amount of FNG’s Frack has brought in 2 years
    • Welcome FNG Andrew to the group and you got lucky with the name- Halfback (based on moving from NY to FL and now to CLT)

Sisyphus and a bucket of suck

  1. You’re wondering why the title of this backblast has an STD in it.
  2. On second thought you realize it is Sisyphus  (click his name to the left if you don’t remember who he was) not syphilis (no link because nobody needs to see that).

YHC was EH’d into Q-ing this morning. Thanks Hair Band. I wanted to make this workout different than the “typical” kettlebell workout and it certainly was. Two things showed up at the workout that haven’t been used (or at least I haven’t seen used).

The first was a bucket of suck. It was a 5 gallon bucket filled with rocks. We’ll say it weighed around 50-60lbs, though it certainly felt like more by the end. I was going to weigh the bucket when I got to work, but the PAX was taking out their anger on the poor defenseless bucket and the PAX won the fight. Let’s have a moment of silence for the bucket who gave its life so we could get swole.

The second item of gear were first called “streamers” when the PAX first arriving. YHC works as a Quality Control Manager at a textile company. YHC took an off-quality roll and chopped it into 2″ sections. These “streamers” were lined up on the hill from the parking lot to the sidewalk near the street. These “streamers” were tied to everybody’s kettlebell

Warmup

Mosey around the parking lot and circle up

Side straddle hops IC X20

Imperial walkers IC X20

Mountain climbers IC X20

Everybody warmed up…GOOD let’s start this thang.

Thang

  • Round 1 – Everybody takes a turn on the bucket of suck. Pick up the bucket walk about 8 parking spaces. Do 5 burpees. Pick up the suck bucket and go back to the start. While one of the PAX was doing work with the bucket, the remaining PAX was at the top of the hill on the sidewalk. While holding a squat position the PAX at the top of the hill pull their kettlebells to them. Once the bell reached the top of the hill, the PAX did 5 shoulder presses on each arm. Take your bell down the hill to reset. Repeat until all of the PAX has had their go on the bucket of suck.
  • Round 2 – Same concept as Round 1. This time, the bucket of suck goes up the hill to the sidewalk. Once at the sidewalk 10 burpees. Bring bucket down the hill for the next guy. This time the PAX pulled their kettlebells up the hill in a seated position like a rowing machine. Once the bell gets to the top do 10 shoulder presses each arm with the bottom of the kettlebell facing up. Modify to regular shoulder presses if you weren’t comfortable pressing the bell upside down.

  2. Shout out to Nekot and Turnpike. They both have long roads to recovery after their surgeries.

The pelt of a rodent (Moleskine)

  •  Attendance was a little light this morning. One was going on a “rode” trip (their words, not mine). One is barbecuing meat for the entire town tonight. More than a couple have gross, disfigured, or dysfunctional feet or ankles. Some probably drank too much White Zinfandel at the happy hour last night. Some might not have been able to find the M’s yoga pants. Whatever your excuse for not being there this morning, you were certainly missed.
  • Another moment of silence for the bucket. Luckily his death was quick. I can’t say if it was painless or not.
  • From Hair Band: Missed #mumblechatter opportunity this morning…From an article I read:”While normally Uranus is barely visible, you should be able to spot it with your naked eye, even without binoculars.” Plenty of jokes to be made on this one.
  • I almost did hillbillies aka the Bernanke (had his real last name listed there, but switched to his F3 name. We know it is for his whole family, not just him) mating call, but did mountain climbers instead. Either way it should have made him happy. Speaking of Bernanke, if you see him let him know he is a wanted man for bucket homicide.
  • I think we all have a new respect for that hill. It doesn’t look that long or intimidating until you’re forced to drag heavy(ish) things up it repeatedly.
  • Plenty of opportunity for “that’s what she said” this morning. It works with just about anything.
  • Some mumble chatter about Duke’s this morning. Not sure if it was the university, the mayonnaise, or the grill in Monroe. Whatever the case, it makes me want a greasy cheeseburger with mayo now. Thanks for that.
  • Glass Joe was able to relive some of his teenage angst with a song (don’t remember which one) that came on during the workout.
  • Lamont came squealing in on 2 tires with about 10 seconds left.At least he was there and on-time.
  • Hoffa admitted when he first got there that he was up way past his 7pm bedtime. Believe it or not, he was at a concert last night that didn’t get out until after 11. Good job showing up and doing work
  • It was good to see Arsenal in the gloom. We need you to hand over your VQ card. There is no time like the present to step up and Q. They will only mock (read: help) you a little bit. Arsenal is one of the more quiet guys, but he sure made himself vocal at the end and his displeasure of the workout. That is music to my ears. Once you regain feeling in your arms/shoulders you’ll thank me.
  • Edison is another quiet one. Shows up, does the work, doesn’t complain. Looking forward to a workout where he is on Q as well.
  • Hair Band mentioned a restaurant opened by GWAR. The menu looks amazing. Will have to check this out if I’m in the Richmond area. http://gwarbar.com/
  • When Gypsy arrived and found that I was on Q he was not a happy person. “After eHarmony’s last Q (my VQ by the way) I was sore for a week. It sucked in a good way.” That comment made my day sir. I’m not sorry for that or if you get sore from this one either. Soreness is weakness leaving the body.
  • I was glad none of Union County’s finest came by as I was setting this up. A guy at a middle school at 4:45 in the morning throwing what looked like toilet paper down the hill 10+ times would certainly be hard to explain my way out of.

The Brave A.K.A “Fast Twitch but Better”

After the threat to take the PAX of The Brave on a Friday trip down to the Murderhorn Thursday afternoon for a mile long segment creation, only 6 were Brave enough to show up to see if there was any substance to those threats. They found that there was none, but just enough to keep JRR Tolkien from another one of YHC’s Q’s. Success. Quick unapproved disclaimer, and we were off to the Bullring.

The Thang:

One mile warmup mosey to the West (South?…left.) entrance of the Bullring. Simple instruction that we would do suicides on each of the small entrances around the ring, with an exercise each time you crossed the start point. Alternating exercises were Jump Squats (X5), Ski Abs (X5 each side), and Burpees (X5). PAX completed 13 out and backs (Friday the 13th), reaching the door on the East (North?…right.) entrance. Mary at the start to give the legs a slight rest.

Mosey over to the patio by Loch Ness for some upper body work.

15 slow bicep curls with patio chairs

15 slow dips

Plank walk w/ push-up from left to right, beginning of patio to door of building.

15 Over head press with patio chairs

Plank walk w/ push-up from right to left, from door of building to beginning of patio.

Mosey around the lake to the stairs by the other building, and backwards bearcrawl up the stairs.

At this point time was closing in, and YHC was sure that with the distance we had covered, the 10k point was in reach. So, off we go. We stumbled into Fire Hazard, who thought the suicides were ridiculous and decided to lift weights at the YMCA instead (not kidding, check out his strava). Wall sits on the wall of Stone Mountain Grill, as the instruction to reach the 10k mark was given.

COT

Figured the title of the BB would cause some ruckus, but it was Rachel who came up with it. #fasttwitchsiteq #truthhurtssometimes. Strong work by everyone this morning!

The Milk Man Always Delivers

17, mostly usual suspects, showed up this morning knowing YHC would likely add some twist to our routine.    Escargot’s milk jugs have yet to be stolen (hint) and thus were our chosen coupons for the am.  Escargot posted so it must have been pre-ordained.

The Thang:

COP – SSH X10, 5 burpees OYO, Merkins X10, CDD X10, Parker Peters X10, Mtn Climbers X10, 5 burpees OYO.

Mosey over to coupon warehouse (ie stash behind the hedges) and grab a milk jug and a partner.      Mosey down to the practice field (dark as hades down there) for partner work.  Partner 1 sprints down to end of field and back carrying both jugs (every man likes to have two jugs in his hands) while partner 1 starts called exercises.   Keep rotating exercises and sprints until team has completed combined 50 burpees, 100 merkins, and 150 squats.

Mosey up toward parking deck and stop at the rails for pull ups and incline merkins on the rails.   In cadence to 10 with two rounds of each.

Mosey over to fence beside parking deck for 11’s.    1 Dragon Fly on the fence by the field and 10 balls to the wall merkins on the parking deck wall.  Back and forth until you get to 10 Dragon Fly’s and 1 balls to the wall merkin (this set hurt).

Mosey to base of steps and find your partner.   Partner 1 takes both coupons and runs up steps while partner 2 runs the ramps (middle section).   Partner hand slap merkins when you meet then partner 2 takes the coupons and both keep running in the direction they started.     Meet four times with 5, 10, 15, and 20 hand slap merkins.    LBC’s OYO while we wait for the six to finish and then a few minutes of mary with coupon extended behind your head (off the ground).    Low Flutter and dolly X20 each.

Run the ramps up to top for some peoples chair.   One armed push ups with coupon to 10 and then 15.

Mosey down stairs and back to the parking lot to safely stash the coupons.

Naked Moleskin:

Running with 2 coupons, especially up the stairs, really jacks up the heart rate.     YHC unwisely picked the uphill segment with Coupons on the stairs while Brillo had the coupons during the down hill segment on the stairs.  Likewise, the field sprints had YHC gasping and welcoming burpees to get them out of my hands.

The Dragon Flies started to get really painful and lots of groaning was heard once we got over 6 (or was it 2).

Marconi drove up in an 1898 Volkswagon (didn’t now cars that old existed).    We may have to consider changing his name to Mr. Magoo (or he can go with AKA – it’s been done before).

Scabby claimed he was on time but I was pretty sure Hops made it an even 16 when he pulled in with 30 seconds to spare.  No matter, one team was thankful to have a third wheel.

Paper Jam hurried out early.  Something about getting home before the milk man delivered at his house.

Honored to get the change to lead this am.   Lots’ of fun even if I hurt myself.

With the virtual flag planted, 8 men pulled themselves from their warm cars to see what YHC has planned.  Hops gave me the nod earlier this week and since I have not Q’ed all year, buckle up this could be rough!

Wingin’ It

About a week ago, a call went out for someone to step-up and Q as the regularly scheduled leader was apparently planning to be MIA this fine morning. I could’ve sworn someone responded and agreed to take it, but apparently they thought they were volunteering to be MIA themselves this morning. Didn’t know that was an option. Fast forward to today and when 5 of us circled up, kettlebells smartly arrayed in front of us, we figured out pretty quickly that none of us had planned to lead. So, with a shrug and a disclaimer (including a first ever: “I don’t know what I have planned today, but proceed at your own risk”), we began.

TheTHANG

  • Initiate Blood Flow: SSHs, imperial walkers, squats, mountain climbers, something else, another thing, and, oh yeah, 100 swings.
  • The Meat Grinder part 1: Kettlebell flow — 1-handed swings, hi-pulls, cleans, press, squat; R then L; ascending reps 2,4,6,8,10
  • Intermission: 100 swings, 20 2-handed press
  • Meat Grinder part 2: Kettlebell flow — same as above, descending reps 8,6,4,2
  • Cooldown: overhead waiter carry to the school and back
  • COT

NakedManMoleskine

  • SiteQs were last seen hiding in the bushes muttering something about pushing pax into a deep end and new form of leadership development called Trial by Fire. Little did they know, we don’t rattle. If I hadn’t stepped up I’m sure any of the other fine gents would’ve directed the proceedings. All except maybe Smokey…something about a warm car and a comfy seat…
  • Worst part about Qing without a plan… definitely missed the tunes today. Told the PAX I’d lead but I wouldn’t sing. There is not a disclaimer powerful enough to cover my pitch or poor lyrical memory, especially while swinging a bell.
  • Small crew so we took 30 seconds (i.e., we were out of breath and needed a short break) to learn a little about each others story. Nutshell: God has blessed each of us in different ways, over and through different paths, but HE IS FAITHFUL. Also, if I remember this correctly, he has blessed us (collectively) with 10 girls and 5 boys. That’s a lot of blessing right there (and good odds for our boys, cause knowing us, they’re gonna need it!)
  • Congrats to No Regerts! T-minus 2 weeks on the upcoming wedding! Forgot to ask whether you were going to go with real rings or those tattoo versions. Inquiring minds want to know.
