Moleskin:

Another ‘Fun Friday’ morning in the books.  We did a little of this and a little of that…plenty of upper body and lower body, with some running in between.  Lots of up and down.  We kept moving to stay warm…. and we got stronger in the process.

Most interesting moment of the morning was when we pulled up to the charter bus in front of the school while we were getting the workout underway.  One lonely charter bus, sputtering away and kicking off diesel fumes.  We thought it might be a good place to hang out for 45 minutes (inside of course). Or maybe the driver wants to join us?  Yeti went to check it out…since he works there and all and a single bus parked out front was a little odd for a field trip.  Unfortunately Mr. Bus Driver had a little AM/PM problem.  It wasn’t that he set his alarm wrong, because he clearly got up plenty early to be parked outside the school at 5:00am.  Just a little problem reading his trip card, which indicated he needed to be at the school at 5:00 PM.  Ooops.  Good thing we decided to run by the bus…else he was going to be waiting a long time for his bus-driving buddies to pull up behind him.

Everyone hung in there well this morning.  Hoover had some issues with the derkins on the bleachers…not enough clearance between the bleachers and the wall for the tall guys to work (some times it pays to be short).  Fletch was killing it up Grandma. Everyone was faster than me on the sprints.  Well done men!  I enjoyed it.

Sound off in the comments if you have other amusing anecdotes or announcements.

Field Trip!

11 men came out on this crisp morning to put in some work ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.  The idea was that we would work hard today so we could eat (relatively) guilt free next week.  It went down like this once the heart felt disclaimer was given.

We still had time for some sprints!

3 rounds of back and forth across the parking lot

We headed back to the launch point and still had 90 seconds left.  I wanted to make sure everyone got their money’s worth so we did Merkins until Slim Fast called time.

Moleskin:

·         It was mid 30’s this morning so I wanted to keep everyone moving.  I failed at this since the mumble chatter was very high throughout the workout.  Next time I will just run more…Spoiler alert.

·         I do not know everyone’s major in college who attended, but I question their math skills.  Counting during Mary was quite interesting, both in English and Spanish.  We got in 20-ish of each exercise.

·         Mary had many, er, moments this morning, not the least of which was a drive by by Dora.  He did slow down enough through the parking lot to speak to us.  I did not include him in the number count since you must at least get out of your vehicle to be counted as present.

·         I kept Jack Web a secret until it was time, since that and talking about running are all I hear Benny speak about lately.  Benny, we got in both of your favorite activities today, so I hope you are pleased.

·         I heard snippets of wearing skirts, gun holsters, free t-shirts among many other things this morning.  Please chime in with any other tid bits I may have missed.

·         Peak rocks.  I know I am a little biased but we have an excellent core group of guys that show up every week and work hard.  It is always an honor to lead.

·         Thanks to Lois and Sensei for the opportunity…Wait, I am site co-Q and nobody was on the schedule.  I lost the coin flip so…

·         Just kidding, while the prior statement is true, it is a joy to lead at Peak.  I look forward to the next time when we will just run for 45 minutes.  Slim Fast and I have many routes through downtown Matthews we can lead folks through.

·         Thanks Slim Fast for the takeout.

Announcements:

·         Register for Joe Davis before someone registers you.  There are 5K and 10K options.

·         Speak to Slim Fast if you are able to help out with bagels and other items for the post race festivities.

·         No Peak 51 next week for Thanksgiving.  There is talk of a convergence somewhere.  check Twitter, the email or Slack for more info.

·         Open spots for Peak are available.  Speak to Lois and/or Sensei if you are interested.

Shake(N Bake) a leg, let’s run!

First time at Q at possible new AO, don’t be late right? NOPE! The Q came in on two wheels at 5:16 for the 5:15 workout. A well placed “I will be late text” kept things moving until the tardy Q joined the PAX. Thanks Madison for keeping things moving.

The Thang:

A short mosey was taken to a quiet spot where the disclaimer was given.

COP (In Whisper Cadence)

Side Straddle Hops X 20

Imperial Walkers X 20

Mountain Climbers X 15

That’s enough of that stuff. Mosey from the start of Weddington Ridge Lane to the end of Weddington Ridge Lane. At the end of the street do 10 Merkins and ping pong back to pickup the six. Now that we are all together again, get into plank position for what was affectionately called Shake N Merks X 10 in cadence.

Alright, let’s mosey on over to the street that one of the PAX lives on to wake up his neighbors. They should love him for that. Mosey to the middle of the road and split off into partners. Partner One runs back to the stop sign and performs 20 Bomb Jacks. Partner Two runs in the opposite direction to the end of the road and performs 20 Monkey Humpers. After each person finishes the called exercise, they start to run back in the direction of the other. When the partners meet, they perform together 5 Partner Burpees. Flipflop and repeat until time is called.

After the “fun” workout(as Gypsy kept calling it) was over, the PAX return back from whence they came making sure to ping pong back to pick up the six. We all got to meet Mary together.

Mary consisted of a couple of stretches that should help on the ride home for a couple of PAX(me included). I do not know the name of the stretch, so I will describe it. Get into plank position, raise your right leg up in the air, draw your right leg forward while bending at the knee, pull your knee forward underneath you body while resting on your arms and your left leg stretched out. For more of a stretch, lean down on your forearms. Flip flop legs and repeat. Now for the Honeymooner. Stand, put your feet shoulder width apart and bend over slowly to touch the ground to stretch. Finally, while standing cross right leg over the left and bend over to touch your toes to stretch. Flip flop and repeat. And we’re done.

Moleskin

It was a great effort by all. The temp was in the 40’s but the burning desire to better ourselves kept us warm. A very special shoutout to Bullwinkle and Radar, those guys are really stepping it up. Thanks to Madison and Smokey for setting a good pace to challenge and to keep the group close. Thanks to Nomad for the headlamp he fashioned from a Stadium Light, he looked like a car coming down the street. I got to get me one of those. Thanks for the push Arsenal and Gypsy. And thank you to anyone I left out.

Don’t forget the Union County Happy Hour is tonight(11/16/2017). Come on out and be seen in clean clothes to fellowship. It’s at Hickory Tavern in Wesley Chapel off of Hwy 84 in front of Target from 7:30-9ish.

Please make sure you try to get some plastic grocery bags to Gypsy. He is helping out a group in SC that are taking the bags and making them into mattresses for the homeless.

There will be several Turkey Trots and F3 pickup football games. Stay posted on Facebook, Twitter, and Slack for details. Ballantyne will be having a Turkey Trot that Speed For Need will participate in, they are in need of riders for the chariots.

Area 51 Christmas party on December 6th or 8th. $20 a person, food is covered.

Thank you everyone for letting me lead you. I apologize for being late again.

PreBlast: Devil’s Yell Thanksgiving Jam

With Devil’s Turn and Rebel Yell shut down (and probably every other Thursday AO) it is time for the 2nd Annual Thanksgiving morning Jam led by QIC. Help justify all that Thanksgiving Day food you will eat and feel better when you fart sack your favorite Black Friday workout.

We will launch from the fountains in Blakeney Shopping Center at 6:30 am.

Which Paper Jam with show??? The runner #notarunner, the Brogie, or the one who likes rocks #imnothaggis??? Show up to find out. We will cover at least 3-miles, do some other fun things, and we may even stretch at the end.

Highway to Hell

Swinging Kb’s can get a little bit boring. So… YHC decided to switch it up a little bit.

We got the pleasantries out of the way and started on to the real business..

The PLAN: Partner up

Stop 1: Parking lot: 100 swings
Transition: Partner 1 carries both bells, partner 2 does 10 merkins and chases them down. Carry bells to stop 2 (approx 400m away)

Stop 2: Church doors: 100 Flutter presses
Transition: Same

Stop 3: Circle in front of stairs: 100 suitcase squats, partner does 2 flights of stairs comes back and switch.
Transition: same

Stop 4: back to church doors: 100 flutters presses

Head back home for 100 Burpees to finish. ****

HERE IS THE CATCH! You can’t let your bell touch the ground for the whole time.

*** For every group of 2 that does not let their bell touch the ground… you get to subtract 10 burpees from the final exercise of 100 burpees.

Moleskine:

WE actually had EVERY group make it through the whole exercise without dropping their bell. It was a cool workout. Major bonding happened. Forearms are still sore.

Shoutout to Fireman Ed for knowing how the Mary Circle is supposed to go… but catching crap for it anyway.

Yeti was gaming the system, good for him… use the brain not the brawn.

Smokey is timeless. I think he said hes like 47 or something. Thats ridiculous. I hope I look like him at 35.

Love the group out there at skunk, grateful to lead!

A Week Early

13 men showed up.  A 14th was expected but did not post.  Lobsta Roll was listed as Anvil Q on the calendar this week.  YHC listed for next week.  Took this week instead.  Maybe Lobsta will be around next week to lead it.  Plenty of mumblechatter when the new plan was agreed upon.  “I showed up for Lobsta Roll, not Mermaid,” and the like.  Not sure what to make of the chatter.  Short disclaimer included something like, “You all know what to do.”  This elicited more chatter.  Haze was beside himself that the full monty was not provided.  VSF flying, off we went.

Mosey through the parking lots of this vast AO.  Circle up.  Proper disclaimer given.

Moleskin

You can see it in one of 2 ways.  Lobsta was a no show or YHC was a week early.  Either way, the workout was covered.

Champagne was HC yesterday.  He was no show today.  Suffering from a toothache.  Heal up.

Swear I saw Rachel wearing sleeves the other day at the Charlotte Marathon.  Not today.  Its gotta be real cold for him to wear anything more than t-shirt and shorts.  He was out front.  Haze asked him what his temperature range was for his outfit today.  I think they settled on 25 to 95 degrees.  Keep the clothing costs down.

Lorax was crushing it.  Kotters  to Pele.  Great to see him out at Anvil.  Hops did the pickup rounds this morning.  Speaking of Hops, he took off his winter cap in COT and rung it out.  Comments followed.  Is that Mr. Brady?  Nope, Hops overdressed a tad and all the sweat went to his head.  Truthfully never seen that much sweat come out of a hat on a mid-30’s day.  Not even close.  Van Pelt was a little grossed out by it.  Or disturbed.

Good job today Pro, as usual.

McGee won the H-R Burpee repeat.  Go figure.

TL, Thunder Road, Snuka, and Utah getting it done.

Respect to Van Pelt and Snuka.  Can’t give it in the PAX list any longer.

T-claps to Hops for the takeout prayer.

Queen was right… ‘Don’t try suicide(s)’

…Nobody’s worth it… who knew a 70’s-80’s rock band knew so much about F3?  Despite the chilly temp, the gloom and a warning to bring running shoes given in the pre-blast, 9 PAX showed up to Thrive.  It went down like this…

The Thang:

A proper and heartfelt disclaimer was given and we were off on a mosey around the parking lot.  Some karaoke left, right and backwards running was inserted to ensure the PAX was alert, i.e. awake.

COP

Side Straddle Hops X 20

Low Slow Squats X 20

Imperial Walkers X 20

Mountain climbers X 20

…Nobody cares…. Mosey to the playground as Hairband came screaming into the parking lot up on two wheels.  A member of the PAX accused Q of going to the playground in an effort to hide from HB.  Even though the evolution at the playground was on the Weinke, Q didn’t feel he could ethically deny the allegation so it remained unaddressed.  At the playground we tackled the ’80 Ds’.  And no, the title of this evolution has no connection to Q’s college transcript.  20 each of derkins, dips, diamond merkins and donkey kicks, OYO.  Plank exercises until everyone finished.  Then 5 burpees in celebration of HB’s successful imitation of Bullwinkle – who was missed today.

….Ya just gonna hate it …. Mosey over to the road with the islands/peninsulas/archipelagoes/etc.  Straight run down this road with a stop at each ‘land mass intrusion’.  Do 20 Dolly’s at the first and add 5 at each succeeding stop.  I believe that totaled 150 Dolly’s.  Mosey to the hill for a series of 9s:  jump squats and bomb jacks.  And just to ensure the quads were on fire each trip up the hill was run backwards.

…Nobody gives a damn…. Returning to the intersection at the back right of the AO, we ran suicides with an evil twist along the back road using 5 light poles as turn-around points.  The twist being start each lap with 10 merkins and do 2 burpees at the 1st light pole, 4 at the second light pole, etc. Total of 50 merkins + 30 burpees.  Back at the intersection, LBC’s until the six was in.  Then more suicides!  Now down the road with land mass intrusions, bouncing back at each such intrusion.  No merkins or burpees – just running.  And some say Q doesn’t have a heart!  Freddie Merqs at the end till six was done.  Mosey back through the parking lot and time mercifully expired.

Moleskin

Great group of men who put the work in.  Glass Joe and Shake n Bake spent a lot of time out front as usual.  eHarmony and Arsenel – do you have any idea how far you’ve come?  You both were busting it today – this Weinke would have smoked you just a few months ago.  Great job.  Solid work as always from HB, Bonhoffer, Gypsy and Shepherd.

Thanks to GJ who spoke about the effect of F3 in his life.  5 years ago today he lost his mother to cancer.  She made him promise that he would take care of his wife and daughters.  The reality was he was out of shape, overweight and on his way to high blood pressure and whatever else.  So he started running and then being a regular at F3.  He lost a lot of weight, his blood pressure is way down; his health is way up.  His example has rubbed off on his family as his middle school aged daughter is running cross country.  That’s real life change.  That’s a wife who in all likelihood has had widowhood pushed much farther out.  That’s daughters having daddy able to play in the park with them or perhaps be there one day to walk them down the aisle.  This is why when our clock still says 4-something and sane people are still sleeping, we are rolling out into the gloom to moderately torture ourselves.  Thanks for the testimonial GJ.

Announcements… sign ups for Joe Davis 5k/10k run are open )early Jan race)…new moderate running workout started Thursday mornings at Socrates Academy on Weddington Road, 0515 start….Area 51 Christmas party signups are posted.

Putting out a call for Qs to sign up on Sign Up Genius.  If you post here, you need to Q here.  After next week it is VERY open.  Missed a number of regulars today: Lamont, kiloWatt, Playoffs, Bernanke,  Bullwinkle, Hoffa to name a few.  We prayed for ya….thanks to HB for taking us out!

Balrog II

29 men from multiple regions, generations and backgrounds woke to 30 degree weather and the prospect of running 16 miles w/ pain stations… and posted to Balrog II #CSAUP anyway.

Group

What is Balrog II?: PreBlast

Thang:

Depart from Hickory Tavern Ballantyne at 0700 with shovel flags in tow.

Pain Station #1 @ Ballantyne Corporate Park AO: Goonie on Q

Jack Webb 1/4 up to 6/24. Merkins done with hands on rocks, presses to be done with rocks, as well. Recover with a quick jog down to the western-most building of Loch Ness and back.

Mary while holding rocks above: Dolly x 10 IC, Box Cutter x 10 IC, Rosalita x 10 IC

Next set: Curls, Overhead Presses, and Tricep Curls: 4 sets, 10x, 15x, recovery mosey down and back, 15x, Presses 25x. In between sets, pax would rotate rocks to get a little variety in their lives.

Pain Station #2 @ Elon Park Elementary School AO: Kid Rock on Q

Upon arrival to Elon Park for the 2nd stop, the PAX hydrated and got right to it, by trading in their shovel flags for buckets and sandbags for an obstacles course team challenge. Circle up and count off by 2’s.  1 runner from each team start us off.
Full parking lot run to South driveway for bucket carry. Once around the child carousel and back to starting point without setting down your bucket. On to the “barbed wire” crawl around South landscape bed to the sandbag carry. Carry sandbags along East commons area to telephone pole and back. Drop your bags and off the the plate carry. 1 45lb plate walk to the school and back. Head North along the parking lot to the sled pull. Pull the length of rope, and drag back to starting point. Finally, finish the course at the spear throw. Strictly enforced 20 burpee penalty for missed spear. Circle of Mary until all PAX have complete the course.

Pain Station #3 @ Blakeney AO: Strawberry and Paper Jam on Q

Met the group at a parking lot right before Blakeney fountains with an additional 5 pax in tow including a FNG. We did a quick round of Rock Webb up to 6 counts. Was notified by many that the exercise had already been done. Questioned by same pax if we coordinated with other  Q’s as to not repeat exercises (we obviously did not…OR did we on purpose). Cobains. After feeling a little sorrow we cut the Rock Webb off and moseyed to Blakeney fountain for a PJ led Blakovery dynamic stretching session.

Pain Station #4 @ Stonecrest AO: Commish on Q

It would not be prudent if we did not run up and down our signature piece of landscape at The Maul – so of course, we started with a nice mosey down The Murderhorn only knowing that eventually the crew would have to go back up. That alone is mentally painful after you just finished running up to 10 miles. Understanding the pain these fine young men were enduring, they were rewarded at the bottom with a fully stocked fuel station and some patriotic music to keep their spirits up. The PAX did not eat or drink much so I figured they were ready to get rolling to where they could grab some cold ones and killer apps at The Hickory Tavern.

Not so fast though.. This is F3 and Balrog II so we have certain standards to live up to. In turn, we blasted out a lightening round of Mary.  The PAX counted out along with the cadence energized and inspired.  After a quick mosey down the grassy knoll to the rock pile, we banged out a lightening round of curls, military arm presses and tri-ceps with very manly sized rocks I might add.  It was time.  These guys were pumped – and off they went disappearing into the midst as they climbed back up the Murderhorn.

Very encouraging and impressive showing by all!!  Great work men!!

Pain Station #5 @ Devil’s Turn AO: Tuck on Q

After a long slog up Rea Rd from Stonecrest we circled up at the corner of Rea and Bevington.   The PAX were anxious to knock out the remaining few miles to get to the beer and nachos that awaited us at Hickory Tavern.  Not so fast.  Just enough time for a little more pain.

Low Slow Squats IC.  Each PAX calls out 1 rep around the circle until all have gone (there were 22 of us at that point).  Same deal with Tempo Merkins, then Jump Squats.  And off we went onto the Greenway for the remaining 3 miles of Balrog II.

Bal-blog:

This was a great event, made possible by all of the volunteers and brave souls that showed up.  We lost a handful of potential PAX due to the CLT Marathon.  Next year we’ll make sure there is no scheduling conflict.  YHC encourages all who have never done a #CSAUP to stop thinking and put yourself out there.  They give you access levels of 2nd and 3rd F that are not possible under normal circumstances, and help expand what you thought was possible for yourself physically.  There WILL be a Balrog III next year so keep your eyes peeled.  There are many people to recognize so here goes:

T-claps:

  • Paper Jam, Strawberry, Commish, Goonie and Kid Rock for Q-ing.  Extra credit to Commish for providing a cornucopia of snacks/refreshments.  That’s right, a CORNUCOPIA! #cornucopia
  • Mario, Goonie, Wingman, Dasher, Cheddar, Das boot, McGee, Fredo (respect), Velveeta, Transporter, Lumberjack and YHC for being the few and the proud to complete the entire 16-mile Balrog II course.  Mario hit 17 by repeatedly looping back to check on the six.
  • Wingman, Mario, Kid Rock, Cheddar, Commish, Goonie, Strawberry, Paper Jam, Fire Hazard & YHC for being lucky strong enough to participate in Balrogs I AND II and live to tell about it.  Who’s going for the trifecta?
  • Squid for once again refusing to relinquish a shovel flag after he joined at Elon Park ES.
  • Fire Hazard, Haggis and Cul de Sac for squeezing in part of the event before other commitments
  • FNG Sick Puppy for making Balrog II his very first F3 activity.  That takes guts.  Consider the fact that he’s not even in high school yet and that makes him a certified bad ass.  He showed great grit and determination in shaking off cramps the last couple of miles.
  • Cobbler for posting despite not doing this kind of mileage recently.  Keep up the good work!
  • Transporter for introducing us to “Ass Caps”
  • Wingman and Kid Rock for helping w/ promotion
  • Strawberry for finding the da Vinci shovel flag.  Strawberry, please be gentle with her.  Remember: 1) no bright light 2) do not get it wet and 3) never feed it after midnight, no matter how much it begs.
  • Kid rock for Q-ing an awesome Spartan style pain station despite #cankle
  • Madame Tussauds, Thin Mint, Mario, JRR Tolkien and Fire Hazard for providing equipment
  • Mario and Fire Hazard for helping Kid Rock set up / break down equipment
  • Squid for taking us out
  • The nice lady we basically car jacked at the end to take our group photo
  • Kid Rock and Hickory Tavern Ballantyne for providing the post-event food.  Under normal circumstances it would have been delicious.  After 16 miles and every Jack Webb ever it was… orgasmic?  Yes, orgasmic.  #orgasmic
  • Everyone for showing up despite freezing temps and logic
  • All of the many anonymous vehicles that supported us along the way by honking as they drove by.  Very cool.
  • The PAX that donated to the Patriot Military Family Foundation
  • Mad Dog and Squid for their service to our country

Alternative BackBlast Titles:

  • “Introducing: the Tricep Curl” (because Goonie knows what he did)
  • “Fire Hazard Leaves Early; Hates Veterans” (because actions speak louder than words)
  • “All Jack Webb, All the Time” (because Jack Webb is what we do now at every workout, w/ rocks)
  • “Escobar: Portrait of a Runner” (because Escobar is a runner)
  • “Balcovery” (because you CAN recover during a #CSAUP… w/ Paper Jam on Q)
  • “Keys to Victory” (because finding YHC’s car keys is a team effort.  2 years in a row.)
  • “CSAUP: Complete Suffering And Ultimate Punishment (because ‘punishment’ is the only logical reason you would bring a middle schooler FNG to an event such as this.  whatever Sick Puppy did, it must have been REALLY bad.)
  • “Nacho Average #CSAUP” (because nachos)

Kid Rock Moleskin:

YHC has had quite the week leading up to this event. Sprained ankle and a busted axle on the beast caused me to be extremely behind in planning and preparation. Borrowed vehicles, borrowed time, borrowed equipment, and a borrowed garage… courtesy of Mario, Fire Hazard, Tolkien, Thin Mint, and MT- this whole thing was made possible. We did the best we could with the time we had to work with, to put together a Spartan worthy course… or at least I dreamed it was…..  YHC never actually got to run it.
The PAX seemed to enjoy a break from running around the city to tackle a few fun yet challenging obstacles. Several OCR veterans breezed through everything without any issues, while others seemed about as out of place as YHC at a millennial dance party. We all witnessed some new spear throw techniques…… sure to improve your overall burpee count at any race.
Looking forward to a bigger and better Balrog III next year! HC already!
