16 Men 16 Degrees

Okay so talking about the cold weather is already old and cliche, however, I was informed this am that this is the coldest Charlotte (or NC) weather since 1920. Wow. I think it was Cottontail who shared that…thank you. The forecast was 16 degrees, give or take a few. At 5:20am, a car pulled in, then another, and another and another and …. OMG, it was a legit group of motivated PAX…16 total. Godsmack walked up in shorts, short sleeves, no hat, no gloves, no sweatshirt. Since we hadn’t seen him in awhile, I’m assuming he was in a deep sleep and no one told him it was Winter. BLC loaned him some extra gloves #MintHillPrepared.  Orange Whip was channeling old school Rocky Balboa, clad in great sweat pants and sweat shirt. Turkey Leg displayed some Smurf like royal blue gloves that made his hands abnormally larger than anything else on his body. Aside from that it was tough to know who was there because of all the layers and beanies pulled down snug over the ears…except for Sunshine that is, his long golden locks did not disappoint. I gave a quick disclaimer and off we went.

Mosey through Covenant Day to Fullwood and hit the neigborhood next door for a long than normal warm up. COP back at CD parking lot for SSH x 25, Merkins x 10, IW x 25, Carolina Dry Docks x 10. We proceeded the long way around the school as I pointed out designated areas; we arrived at the rock pile where we chose a lifting rock and did 25 overhead shoulder press.

Now back at the start at the side frontage road we began the AMRAP with four (4) stations around the entire campus, 25 Merkins, 25 Jump Squats, 25 Carolina Dry Docks and 25 Shoulder Press with Rock. GO!

Moleskin: The group broke up quickly, TL, Alf and Orange Whip jumping out front with something to prove. I couldn’t really tell where everyone was until the end as we all filed back to parking lot for some mary that had already started when I got there. Stone Cold displayed true class hanging with Godsmack who was pushing hard after some time off. HH found a football and made a side game of Fumble = Burpees as it made its way around the group. I think the minimum distance was 3.5 miles with the fast guys getting in 4 laps and over 4 miles. The goal was to stay in motion to offset the low temps. Mission complete.

Couple announcements, Joe Davis run tomorrow at 8am in Fort Mill, you can still run or just show up, it’s not too late!! New F3 bible study after Kevlar at Panera Arboretum #mancave. Thank you Squid for the takeout. Thank you all for showing up this morning in true F3 fashion.

Tune that Body

Despite the Polar Vortex, Bomb Cyclone, or whatever this cold weather is being hyped with, 15 PAX made the decision to Tune the Body at Dromedary outside on Wednesday morning.

The THANG:

  • Disclaimer, start the music accidently, cut the disclaimer short, and then follow me!
  • 5 minute mosey of snaking through the Parking Lot to not get the Pax too stretched out.
  • Once over past the busses, do some dynamic stretching exercises on the sidewalk around the back of the school between the fields.
    • High Knees, Butt Kicks, B-Skip, A-Skip (which may have not actually been A-skips)
  • Short mosey to the Middle School patio and grab some table.  OYO perform a round of the following: 18 Step-ups (9 per leg), 18 Derkins (keep a flat back in line with legs), 18 In & Out sitting on bench.  Then 12 reps of each.  Then 6 reps of each.  Someone leads Mary until everyone is done.
  • Another round of the table exercises with 18 Step-ups Extended (move back one stride from the bench to make more of an extended motion up to the bench and back down), 18 Dips on the bench, 18 Derkins.  Then 12 reps of each.  Then 6 reps of each.  Someone leads Mary until everyone is done.
  • Mosey to the Middle School field/track along the long side straightaway.  Across the field bathed in bus lights being pre-heated for your 2.0s:
    • Bear Crawl across to the other side and jog back.  Mary until the six is in.
    • Lunge Walk (touch knee to the grass) across to the other side and jog back.  Mary until the six is in.
    • Crab Walk across to the other side (or modify when tired to something that keeps at least one hand on the ground, most used Bear Crawl) and jog back.  Mary until the six is in.
  • Mosey back to the patio tables.
  • Perform the following exercises for 60 seconds (these are part of a Core Strength for Runner’s routine found here – click for full descriptions) and then pause while the Q explains the next exercise:
    • 1) Inchworm Plank – walk hands out (keep legs straight), 1 merkin, walk hands back
    • 2) Burp-Mountain Climbers – a Burp (like a burpee, but without the merkin or jump), and while planking run in place 5 seconds
    • 3) Curtsy Lunge Hop – right foot diagonally behind left hip, drop to lunge, explode up.  After 30 sec flapjack.
    • 4) Scorpion Fighter – Derkin position, swing bent knee under to opposite shoulder, back up and around. After 30 sec flapjack.
    • 5) Side Plank with Leg Lifts – After 30 sec flapjack.
    • 6) Maktar Jai – After 30 sec flapjack to what elbow you start with.
    • 7) Lateral hops into runner position
    • 8) Windshield Wipers – on back, arms spread wide, palms down, knees bent 90 degrees
    • 9) Plank rotation to side – elbows stacks horizontal, hand on hip
    • 10) Single Leg Deadlift – After 30 sec flapjack to other leg.
    • 11) Marching Bridge – on back, knees bent, lift into bridge, pick up one foot at a time knee toward chest
    • 12) Superman Plank – 6 count, hand 1, leg 2, hold 3,4,5, down for count, other side.    Time Expired, so mosey to Launch Point.
  • Plank until 6 arrives and everyone (that means everyone Johnny Utah!) is in plank.
  • COT – with Johnny Utah taking us out.

The Moleskin:

  • First time in a while with phone and bluetooth speaker combo.  Notes: when the phone that you are worried about being frozen stays in your pocket and you bear crawl away, the music stops.  Bluetooth speaker being waterproof and portable, but provides good volume, check.  Best way to call instructions over loud music? Still working on that one.
  • Songs that played were here.  These are a part of my sad-clown run workout playlist for high energy, so hopefully they can provide some good motivation for you as well.  I’ve found particular music that is high energy with uplifting and challenging lyrics (that wouldn’t make me blush in front of my kids) to be the best on my music player.  Can really focus on it during a workout and don’t mind repeating it in my mind.
  1. Movin’ – Group 1 Crew
  2. Paisano’s Wylin – Andy Mineo
  3. Insomniac – Trip Lee
  4. You Can’t Stop Me – Andy Mineo
  5. The War Inside – Switchfoot
  6. One Sixteen – Trip Lee
  7. Hero – Skillet
  8. Breathe Into Me – Red
  9. Don’t Waste Your Life – Lecrae
  10. Ignition – TobyMac
  11. Move – MercyMe
  • Haven’t seen Gator Cub and Bunker in a while at Dromedary, so it was great to see them out there.
  • Newer faces Mad Dog and Run Flat keep making regular appearances now.
  • Bunker and Tuck at the 0500 pre-run.  Bratwurst joined in at 0503.  Cobbler and Goodfella joined in at 0515.
  • Cobbler told me that he hoped I didn’t lead a 0.0 workout.  I think that’s what the final 15 minutes were.  Not moving and being subjected to 12 minutes of Mary.  And these aren’t Mary exercises we typically do (see Curtsy Lunge Hop), or can do well for the full 60 seconds.  I found myself having to cut things early on some of them, but that tells me I need to have better core stabilization to hold off injury and be a solid platform to take on harder exercises.  And being a tad sore the next morning told me it was effective.  So, just for Cobbler, next time I won’t lead the 0.0 workout.  Or, just come to Swift on Tuesdays…
  • Goodfella – it’s hard to slow him down, but a 50 yard lunge walk will knock about anyone back.  Seemed to to the trick on Wednesday.
  • A lot of musical workouts at Dromedary over the past month.  While it’s still not a requirement, it’s a good addition sometimes if you are standing around in a circle just breathing hard.  Up to you on how to lead, so…see the first announcement!

Announcements:

WonPahtnuGoUhstehrsUddahPahtneRonUdrWei… OK?

Summary

It was cold…10 degrees.  If YHC had whipped out my weinke, it would have frozen.  Speaking of frozen, when YHC got home, found out my pipes had frozen throughout the house #noshowerbeforework .  Oh well, things could be worse… like the cold freezing the eardrums of the 12 bold PAX that posted such that instructions could not be followed… or heard… or understood this morning. That’s ok, as the Q YHC takes ultimate responsibility for such belligerence, so will try to un-sharpen my harsh Mongol intonation and speak more clearly next time. Enough jabbering, here’s what we did…

Thang

  • Quick mosey around the football field, stop in deck for some SSH, I/W and Mountain climbers … really just waiting for Scabby to hurry up after the running in with his 27 layers of high-visability clothing #safety!  Margo was miffed on my Mongol intonation on the #10 of the I/W, which started the morning fiasco.
  • P#1 runs up parking deck staircase carrying 20-35lb instrument (dumbell, sandbell, or kettlebell) five three times. P#2 runs to the other end of the deck, up staircase, and across top of deck to meet P#1.  Each partner then does 5 weighted reverse burpees, and 5 unweighted. Flapjack. 4 rounds total (2x up stairs each)
  • Catch-me-if-you-can:
    • Rd#1: P#1 runs backwards with weight up deck, P#2 does 2 burpees and catches P#1. Flapjack.
    • Rd#2: Carry weighted object running forwards up to teh top of desk, flapjack every turn.
    • Rd#3: Side shuffle up inclines of deck, forwards on flats to the top
    • Rd#4: Both partners up staircase 2X alternating carrying weights each time
  • Wrap-up final few minutes both partners doing full WW2 sit-ups alternating with the weighted object for 3 min.  When complete, do 10 Dragon-Flag sit-ups per Margo‘s Twitter request. Finito!

YHC was worried about today… sick for a few days, and honestly just not in the greatest shape but working on it.  Glad to see one of my very best F3 friends, Mr. Brady, show up today.  Brady would die for me, and proved it today by posting at a bootcamp.. and carrying weights!  Chelms just nearly died from a self-described heart rate spike according to Twitter.  Lorax doesn’t have a heart, since he wore shorts and a shirt to workout in while moving at warp speed #coldblooded.  Mermaid and ? did 1,264 supine rope pullups, and forced YHC to modify the workout after instructions were unfollowed by doing them the ENTIRE time we went up the deck.  Champagne forced us all to do extra slow squats while he exercised his lips… we nearly froze in place.  Rachel needs to wear shorts over his tights , especially if wearing a bright yellow jacket to highlight the feature.  No fun running behind him, and we all are.  Brilleaux was YHC partner and was kind enough to do all the heavy lifting, while YHC cut corners up the deck. Marconi and Utah chose the heavy weights and are exempt from any trolling #respect. Mr. Brady led us chatting with the man upstairs to end the workout. Finito!

Thank you for the opportunity to lead as always, and thanks for joining me in the harsh weather for the first Q of 2018 for me, and post.  YHC enjoyed posting in many regions in 2017 and will likely continue to change it up in 2018.  Encourage you to step out of the comfort zone and try it from time to time as well. #Nation>Region

Joe Davis Dress Rehearsal or CSAUP? A little of both…

The bone-chilling temps Thursday morning did not keep the #F3Sparta faithful from prepping for the Joe Davis Run for Recovery.  At 05:15, 5 beasts emerged from their warm automobiles, suited up and took off to conquer a few miles through Weddington Ridge and Providence Hills (with few squats, merkins & LBC’s thrown in).

Disclaimer was given and we headed away from Socrates via Big Pine, hung a Right on Equestrian, and then a Left on Cameron Creek.  We followed CC down the hill to the intersection of CC & Hampton Glen, hung another Left on HG and stopped at the 4-way stop on Hampton Glen & Savannah Hills Dr for COP.

COP = 20 SSH IC & 20 IW IC

The Main Thang

The intersection of Hampton Glen & Savannah Hills provides the Home Base for a ‘starfish’ of sorts, so here’s how it went down.  HC dead ends into a cul-de-sac that is equal distance from Home Base.  Savannah Hills has a stop sign (at the pool house) that just happens to be the same distance away.

Today’s weinke was simple – run to 1 cul-de-sac, perform 20 merkins.  Return to Home Base & do 5 burpees.  Head to STOP sign for 20 squats.  Back to Home Base for 5 burpees.  Run to other cul-de-sac & perform 20 LBCs.  All exercises OYO and repeat the circuit until it’s time to return.

When it was time to head back to the cars, the PAX completed 80-ish Merkins, Squats & LBCs along with 45-50 burpees.  The Garmins claimed we covered just over 5 miles.

Joe Davis is Saturday

Moleskin

A couple of guys are battling various maladies, but that didn’t keep them from ignoring the M’s advice and posting anyway.  Arena is a regular at Sparta.  He’s always been strong & now he’s getting fast.  Arsenal came out hoping for fog but likely found frost bite.  A dude from the desert is not used to these cold temps, but that hasn’t stopped him.  Seems like he’s there every week.  Shake N Bake is to blame for this nonsense.  This running workout was partially his idea, and he’s owning it by showing every week.  He even registered for his 1st Joe Davis 10K to show how strong of a runner he has become.  Speaking of ‘becoming a runner’, we welcomed Paper Jam this week.  With all of his pre-runs & Blakeovery, Paper Jam likely logs more miles than anyone in Area 51 (that’s an unofficial tally — don’t want any Fast Twitch or Devil’s Turn guys to get their feelings hurt).

What started as an idea being discussed over beers at Happy Hour has turned into one of the best workouts of my week.  It was my pleasure to lead this dedicated group of brothers this week, and I look forward to the next one.  Thank you guys for blessing me with your presence.

Out.

Dare to be stupid

5 formidable fellows emerged from the shadows in order to take the DRP and start off the day a HIM. After some quick chatter about the layers we adorned we got to it. Here’s this weeks episode of The Brave.

COP
SSH x 20 IC
Mile mosey to bottom of BCP hill off Rushmore dr.

The Thang
1 mile ladder up and down BCP, Partner work was a fail as we were short on numbers, so heres the dilly, yo.

4 stops on the way up and down BCP to Lancaster HWY. Every driveway you do some work and finish at the top and bottom of BCP.

Going up, Stop 1 = 10 x exercise. 2 = 20 x. 3 = 30 x. 4 = 40 x. Going down, same stops and same number of reps. (40, 30, 20, 10 at bottom)

Repeato

Exercises were taken from pax fav poll YHC submitted the day before on slack. (civilian count) Jump Squat, Merkin

6:05 came near and we cut out back to launch. Quick audible as we need to get our pull-ups in and we hauled what butt we had left to pull-up bars near Loch Ness. With 10 pull-ups complete we have a few mins to visit with Mary. LBC x 20 IC, Dolly x 19 IC (Q-fail)

Head up the trail back to launch and done.

Moleskin
It was a frozen tundra for sure this morning. YHC was encouraged that the pax came out to share in the pain. After some observations about our excessive garb, not used to this much clothes while working out, and a lack of facial hair to share frozen beard photos on Insta-machine we got to work. Goal being not stopping long enough to get cold. BCP (Ballantyne Commons Parkway) is a nice 1/2 mile long segment to get some solid work in on. The driveways are approximately 200 meters apart and make for a decent break from the climbs. Mario was out front and crushing Jump Squats. Nard, Fallout, Fire Hazard and YHC traded places consistently. Lap number two was a bit of a #soulcrusher as the increase in Merkins are a challenge. Small sets of 10, then 5 and some 4 counts were the norm to get to the 40, 30 and even 20 counts on the decent down. Our last set of 10 at the start we did Derkins on the guide rail. #watchyoteeth #armfailure 6:05 was the cut-off for mile repeats and we took it on back to the house.

SKEEEERRRRTTTTT! wait a tick, I still have pull-ups to do. Where is the closest pull-up bar? Mario led the way across campus so we could get our daily regiment in. Tks _General

Overall, Strong effort out there from the pax. I’m gonna keep this one in my back pocket for another lead in the warmer part of the year. That way I can watch all the speedsters lap me up and down the hill.

Stone Cold Crazy

Moleskin:

The goal was to keep the PAX moving without much time to contemplate how cold they actually were.  I believe that was achieved.   Still felt as though we were running in slow motion (maybe it was just me).  Not much in the way of mumblechatter as it was just too cold to talk much in the 9 degree weather while trying to catch our breaths.   However, when I attempted to call out one last set up Derkins at the end of the workout, Foundation was quick to point out that we were short on time and needed to head back, saying something about having to get to work.    At the time I believed him so we headed back without completing the Derkins.  Was I tricked?  Did he really go to work today, or even work for that matter?  Maybe I need to go hang out in Lawson for some intel.

Ackbar rolling in looking like Deflated today, with a “Hey, this is Ackbar”. Dude, we knew it was you. #funny.  Not even sure I remember what Deflated actually looks like without the faceguard he’s been wearing since October.  Recalculating still rocking the shorts (although I think I did see him cold at one point, pulling a Doc and trying to warm up his fingers).    Foundation is getting faster by the day, Tuck is likely in the process of recruiting him to run somewhere.  Jingles getting a little prep work in before Joe Davis tomorrow.   Great Pumpkin worked hard today, never stopped.  Gator Cub regretted his decision to show up from minute #1, but kept trucking anyway.  At the rate they’re posting, Mad Dog and Halfback will be leaving everyone in the dust soon. I definitely see a Spartan Beast in their future.  Doughboy is happy now that basketball is in full swing so he can finally start wearing his Kentucky gear again.

Until next time.  Thanks again.

Dollywood complained about the cold (no surprises), Header outran Yeti (barely), Yeti couldn’t feel his fingers, Ductwork told us all about his culinary exploits in Iceland, and Lobster Roll made us all look like 80-year-olds as he finished every workout 2 minutes before us. Good times were had by all and, good news, I’m just starting to feel my fingers again as I type this.

My cheese is frozen

10 PAX answered the call at Hydra (“Ice-dra”?) to steam up the place.

For fear that my digital watch would freeze during the workout, I kept it in a warm spot (none of your business – and you can no longer un-read that statement – – sorry).

The Thang:

Mosey back to the launch spot….and………we’re done.

Moleskin

Nothing fancy – just keeping warm on a brisk January morning.

Thanks for coming out, it would have been a bummer to workout alone.

Might want to stay in bed on Friday because we lose a few more degrees.

  • Sign up for the 2018 Joe Davis Run for Recovery

Neck scarves and EMOMS

After my usual complaining we started off with the usual warm up, laps around the light pole with some SSH and IW mixed in.

With that we were off to Davie park… one caveat:

Each minute a burpee is done.

1 min: 1 burpee

2 min: 2 burpee

3 min: 3 burpee

So the running was constantly interrupted by an increasing number of burpees leaving less and less time before the next whole minute rolled around!

Then to the playground for a little pull-up/burpee action. 5 sets… on each minute do 5 burpees/5 pullups -> up to 5 minutes

After that, we grabbed a lifting rock did 5 thrusters and ran one lap around the short track (about 100m) and rested. EMOM and repeat for 5.

Run back to the AO same thing… burpees on the minute.

Little bit of Mary, and time!

Notes:

  • Header had a sweet neck scarf… which I was going to make fun of… but I guess I am the sucker since I order the same one on amazon later.
  • Cage is killing it coming to so many workouts in a row – great to see him.

17 degrees is about my limit. maybe I am soft but holy smokes my face was frozen!

Frozen Five

5 PAX posted in ridiculously cold temperatures to run around the Indian Land school complex.  4 went for the pre-run on the usual route and were joined by Soft Pretzel for the main event.

The Thang:

Long mosey down and around ILHS to the parking lot near the football fields where YHC tried to warm up the PAX.

25 x SSH

10 x LSS

10 x Cotton/Potato pickers

10 x Windmill

Butt kicks across parking lot, jog back

10 x SSH

High knees across parking lot

Onto the football practice field for another adventure into the Exicon for Dora 1-2-3.

Partner 1 runs 100 yards out and back

Partner 2 completes various exercises, switch until aggregate number of reps is complete.

Today’s exercises, Merkins 100, Squats 200, Air Presses 300

After this it was onto the hill behind the baseball field for Burpback Mountain.

Partner 1 runs up the ridiculously large hill

Partner 2 does burpees, switch until 100 aggregate burpees are complete

Running low on time back to the launch for some Mary

Pistol crunch for the absent General x 10 each leg

Toe Taps x 10 lead by Soft Pretzel

Bonus Thang:

After COT Soft Pretzel, Erector, and YHC moseyed to the playground to knock out the Merkin/Pullup challenge for the day.

Moleskin:

Not much mumblechatter today as YHC tried his best to keep the PAX occupied and warm and Burpback Mountain was a killer at the end.  Great effort by all in suboptimal conditions as evidenced by the difficulty of getting the shovel flag into the frozen tundra.  Lots of running as the soft 2.5 mile guarantee posted in the #run channel last night was met.
