Radar’s Oh Come All Ye Faithful

POSTED ON BEHALF OF RADAR:

So I started my VQ a little early to assess the AO and found it a little lacking with the track on holiday lockdown. My alarm was telling me that it was time to grab the PAX and mosey. I must have hit them with the shock and awe of my Christmas pjs because I didn’t get much of a response from my first command to mosey; or maybe they thought VQ meant easy day? We circled up for a rushed disclaimer and a little warm up that turned into a lot when I called on Bottle Cap to continue the mission while Posse and I got the technical components operational. We received the happy tones and we were set to attempt a Santa run with his sack. As a leader I wouldn’t expect the PAX to attempt anything I wasn’t ready to tackle so I took the first go at the dash to the front. #notasprinter #injuredlist It wasn’t pretty so I had the squad return for the Q and we gave it another go. I still didn’t quite like the results so we dropped the (dead body) sack and moved onto the bleachers while listening to a little Trans Siberian Orchestra. We regrouped at the snack shack, where I leaned on BC to take point and lead the team into some Mary while awaiting the 6.

Now that we’re all together and huddled around the sack, we dived into the Christmas revelry. I led off the pain with some heels to heaven in honor of that famous Christmas heel, Mr. Grinch. I heard a lot of moaning about how long the song was and someone crying out to Alexa to end their suffering. Then we planked up and cheered to Santa Claus is Coming to Town with some push ups and plank jacks. Next on the agenda was some slow Freddy Mercurys and LBC while Queen Thank(ed) God for Christmas.

After some push ups to John and Oko #notabeatle wishing us a Happy Christmas we moved on to squats and bomb jacks to Twisted Sister’s take on the classic Oh Come All Ye Faithful. PAX made comments about sacks, balls and the faithful coming but it was all mumblechatter. Posse reminded me not to go over time so we moseyed back to front while listening to Cheech explain Santa Claus to Chong. Sadly we missed some additional songs on the playlist; I was especially excited for Hello Dollys while listening to Mrs. Parton sing Jingle Bells.

We circled up for namarama and announcarama. Posse reminded us of the Joe Davis Run for Recovery.  https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ff3southcharlotte.com%2F2017%2F11%2F13%2F2018-joe-davis-run-for-recovery%2F&data=02%7C01%7CLou.Nali%40ccbcc.com%7C53df56b8c4ba42f1a4c308d546edd4a1%7Ca7ecaa8d48804bcd8c427d53d21b35bb%7C0%7C0%7C636492909654959204&sdata=o%2BGa2IveH9aPyyxozHD9mF2LyAe018ZozGdMDaHxCeU%3D&reserved=0

Ode to Operation Gothic Serpent

After a strong message from a keynote speaker a week ago, YHC had it on his heart to relay the message, albeit in a much different way to the PAX.  Keni Thomas was a US Army Ranger in Operation Gothic Serpent, which was the mission in 1993 in Mogadishu depicted in the movie “Blackhawk Down.”  While he recounted stories of that horrible night where the USA lost 19 soldiers, he spoke of some tenets of leadership he learned.  Most importantly, “Leadership” is not about a title or a position but rather about stepping up with action right where you are at.

With that in mind, YHC wanted to honor Keni’s inspirational thoughts along with the 19 fallen soldiers during the workout.  A shovel flag was planted at COP as well as in the field where PAX would gather later.

WARMUP:

  • Mosey around parking lot
  • Disclaimer given about not being a professional and in fact, not planning on leading today
  • Told PAX about impact that Keni Thomas’ words had and that we would be honoring the 19 fallen soldiers by doing 19 reps of all exercises
  • YHC would select different PAX to call out and lead different exercises
  • Jingles:  SSH x 19
  • Johnny Utah:  Merkins x 19
  • Doc McStuffins:  Plank Jack x 19
  • The Grease Monkey:  LBC x 19
  • Duck Dad:  Squats x 19
  • Frack:  Carolina Dry Dock x 19

THE THANG

  • Mosey to rock pile for a LIFTING rock
    • EDITOR’S NOTE:  Webster’s Dictionary defines “Lifting Rock” as:  A stone that is awkward to carry, uncomfortable to run with, and CANNOT be lifted with only one hand
  • Most carried rocks to field; some Mecklenburg PAX stuffed their pepples in their pocket
  • Circle up around the flag in middle of field and drop rocks
  • 2 hot laps

SAPPY INTERMISSION

  • Plank it up
  • YHC cued up a song by Keni Thomas entitled “Not Me”
  • Various plank moves for 4 minutes during song
  • For those who could concentrate during the muscle twitching, you heard some incredible and likely convicting words during the chorus
    • “The world becomes a better place
When someone stands and leads the way
Steps forward when they’d rather say not me”

BACK TO THE THANG

  • 2 Hot Laps
  • Bottlecap:  Hydraulic Thrusters x 19
  • 1 Hot Laps
  • Hollywood:  Curls IC x 19
  • Rockwell:  Tricep extensions x 19
  • 1 Hot Lap
  • Das Boot:  Twist Lunges IC x 19
  • Bratwurst:  Dead Lift
  • 1 Hot Lap
  • Moneyball:  Curl to Press x 19? x 5?  x small rocks x missing PAX
  • 1 Hot Lap
  • Replace rocks/Mary x 19 waiting for Six
  • Cowboy-Indian run with Shovel Flag around parking lot to COT
  • Amy Grants x 19
  • Merkins x 19

MOLESKINE

  • While YHC is well known for playing bad music, I will undoubtedly take some abuse/jabs for a different/sappy workout
  • As many Qs state, “It is a pleasure to lead a great group of men” but I would also say it is great to BE led by a great group of men.  I always appreciate when PAX “step forward” whether it be as a Q at a workout, leading a Bible study/Book Club discussion, coaching one of my kids, volunteering at church, helping out at a school event, serving in your neighborhood, and on and on and on.  There are MANY times I say “Not me” waiting for others to step forward.  Keni Thomas, in his speech and specifically in his song, convict me to STEP FORWARD more often.  I hope it does the same for you as our community and this world needs more leaders like each of you.  Let’s go out and BE THE LIGHT and BE THE HANDS AND FEET!  Please hold me accountable!

ANNOUNCEMENTS (Frack’s favorite):

  • Prayer Request:  Verity, Johnny Utah’s daughter, is having some imaging done

AMRAP – Yuge Crowd, Bigly Performance

Yet again at Impromptu a lot of new PAX (8) and old PAX (22 including a young-looking Recalculating in his newish “athletic fit” plaid shirt) took to the best AMRAP course this side of 12 Mile Creek.  The weather was a little cooler which hopefully contributed to some better performances as well.

WARMUP

To get the PAX fired up for the day, we had a Motivational Speaker take us through warm-ups.  Foley kicked us off with his VQ – Nice Job!  He apparently had been preparing for days by the looks of the small pad of paper he brought with him for cue cards.

Mosey to front of middle school.  Disclaimer given.  SSH x 25, Merkin x 20.  Mosey to the back of the high school for the action.

THE THANG

  • WWII sit-ups x 20

Deck of Death

POSTED ON BEHALF OF JINGLES (IN THE QUEEN’S ENGLISH):

14 men gathered at the Weddington campus for an auspicious occasion, Jingles’ VQ. Wrestled with the original theme for the workout of “Life of a Six” or “View from the back of the pack” but with Posse’s encouragement went with Deck of Death.

Warm Up :

  • Mosey to East Side of HS for warmup and disclaimer provided
  • SSH x 16 IC
  • IW x 16 IC
  • Merkins x 16 IC
  • Mountain Climbers x 16 IC
  • Potato Pickers x 16 IC

The Thang :

Proceed to cafeteria (ED. NOTE:  Snack Shop) across the bridge by the track for a fun time playing cards. Took a small detour enroute to get in some air presses and Moroccan Night Clubs whilst doing the wall sit.

Card activities commenced (ED. NOTE:  Began) with the following guidelines, cards were picked and face value of card denotes the number of reps.

  • Clubs – Burpees – OYO
  • Spades – Merkins IC
  • Hearts – Box Jumps  OYO
  • Diamonds – Dips IC
  • J,K,Q were all 10 reps
  • Aces – 1 lap of track

Plank between sets whilst waiting for Q or until the PAX regrouped

With 8 minutes left and a  few cards in the deck  Ace of spades miraculously appeared at the top of the pile and PAX did 1 last lap before heading back to COT for some LBC and flutters in honor of BC – (note – dealer always wins)

Moleskine:

Pre run particpants Hollywood, Damascus, Goodfella surprised by an early Jingles setting up the main event.

The Watchtower PAX pushed for the attendance record with a 14 man turnout. I’m sure all were apprehensive about back to back VQ’s (well done Xerox). YHC normally arrives post disclaimer and so, much to the PAX surprise we started on time.

The usual musical interlude was not available but next time will try to have varied musical selection of differing tastes, Scottish tunes, reggae etc. Anyway, it all served to encourage some usual banter amongst the PAX.

Moneyball closed in prayer.

It has been an honor serving with this group for a while and was nervously excited when voluntold by Posse but could not say no (even though he Q jacked Foundation)

Great work by PAX today who are all now very fond of cards and will be off to Vegas soon

Announcements :

Doc on Q at Commitment – Saturday 6:30 Weddington HS

Back-to-Back leads to problems

When Goodfella reached out last night, he was concerned about YHC’s ability to Q back-to-back days . . . And he was right.  Combine the fact that YHC Q’d #Watchtower on Tuesday with YHC clown-carring with the ENTIRE Screech Owl Band (that’s right, Turtle was back), and the Weinke got a little warped.

Thank you Johnny Utah for the great takeout prayer

Friday the 13th Toast . . . On the 18th

With this being Toast’s 13th birthday, YHC went with an old school Weinke influenced by Jason Voorhees.  The hockey mask wasn’t used but YHC decided to dress in RED top and bottom.

Arriving in the gloom, it is tough to see who is catching onto the #RedFriday but noticed quite a bit throughout the workout.  Nice work guys.  Keep it rolling through the Summer (and further IMO) to honor the soldiers serving our great country.

WARMUP

Cue the boombox (for some actual decent music for a change).  Mosey to front of school with some Karaoke, High Knees, and Butt Kickers mixed in.  Circle up with a full, robust, and hearty Disclaimer given.

  • SSH x 13
  • Imperial Squawkers x 13
  • Six-count Burpees x 13
  • Cumberland County Viaduct x 13
  • LOTS of eye daggers shot towards YHC (Can’t recall who-ooch specifically)

THE THANG

Mosey to the hill next to HS stairs for some 13s

  • Scorpion Dry Docks on top
  • Jump Squats on bottom
  • Run the hill til six is in
  • Goodfella doesn’t like Good-hillah

Mosey to the FRESHLY CUT and WET middle school field where we found the teenage version of Jack Webb . . .

  • 13 Merkins/26 Air Presses
  • 12 Merkins/24 Air Presses
  • Continue til 1 Merkin/2 Air Presses
  • PAX are lucky the field was dark so not to hear from the form police
  • On a separate thought, where are Doc and Transporter lately?

and then his cousin Jack Wabb showed up . . .

  • 13 Heels to Heaven/26 Flutters
  • 12 Heels/24 Flutters
  • You get the idea
  • Even with 29 PAX, YHC could barely hear the counting
  • However, YHC could definitely hear the whining about the grass
  • On a separate thought, Moneyball WASN’T even there

Recover and walk to other end of field so PAX could let blood back in the head.  With all the PAX complaining about the grass, YHC thought it was only appropriate to go through the Tunnel of Love

  • Line up in 2 lines
  • High Plank (i.e. Downward Shop Dawg) position close to each other
  • Last PAX in line, Army crawls through the tunnel
  • Key is to stay low so the planking PAX “Love” is not impacted too much
  • Once on other side, assume plank position until all PAX through the tunnel
  • Now THIS is how you really make the PAX whine about grass clippings
  • On a separate thought, a lot of PAX looked eearily similar to Gatorcub with his shirt off after this one

Mosey back along path with quick stop for SSH x 13   Jailbreak to COT (nice work by the 2.0s running hard up front).  The finishing move:

  • Amy Grants x 13
  • Similar to the J-Lo but a lot tougher to complete due to all the jokes, laughs, and insults hurled at YHC during cadence.  Posse is a true fan and has my back

MOLESKINE

  • A record 29 PAX for Impromptu was awesome to see (30 if you count Recalculating’s SOAZ)
  • That is without a lot of the regulars (LZ, Doc, Transporter, Frack, Rockwell, Jingles, Moneyball, Popeye, Damascus, Maple Syrup)
  • That means LOTS of new PAX!  Which have really energized this entire group; keep EHing (Emotional Headlock) the FNGs in your neighborhood, work, and church
  • All of us know that F3 is a VERY special “thing” that is tough for a lot of us to pinpoint why it has made such a difference/impact on our lives but the fact is IT HAS and we need to #GiveItAway to others who need it as well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Susan Komen race:  Our F3 area is hosting this event so we need a LOT of PAX participation.  Don’t need to be a runner.  Bring the family.  Come just as volunteer to be at F3 and Speed for Need tent to #GiveItAway to guys asking about F3.
  • SEC/ACC Alumni Bash benefiting Hayden’s Hope:  Saturday Aug 26th from 2-7pm.  200 E Bland St in Uptown.  Free parking and admission.  More info on Longhorn’s powerful story and foundation can be found here:  www.haydenshope.org
  • Great Wolf Lodge F3 outing:  Nov 17-18 in Concord.  Special rate for room (sleeps 6).  Great 2nd F (Fellowship) event and get your families involved with other F3 families.  Reach out to Foundation for details.

Thanks to Goodfella for the BIG takeout.  Never short on kind and gracious words.

AMRAP – 4th month w/ 400% humidity

Not sure if it’s Impromptu, the intrigue of an AMRAP challenge, the opportunity to wear Red on a Friday, or the strong EHing going on by the local PAX, but a lot of new PAX took to the best AMRAP course in the Cuthbertson school district.  The nice weather surely wasn’t the draw as it was tough to even see the PAX through the thick air this morning.  Cue the boombox (but no Amy Grant today).

WARMUP

Mosey to front of school.  Disclaimer given.  SSH x 20, Merkin x 10, MC x 20, Flutter x 20.  Mosey to the back of the high school for the action.

THE THANG

AMRAP challenge. Consists of about a 1/2 mile lap with 7 exercise stations along the route. 30 minutes to complete as many laps as possible. Stations included:

  • WWII sit-ups x 20
  • Curl to Press x 20
  • Suppines x 20
  • Burpees x # of laps completed

After 30 mins, we gathered up the PAX and slogged back to COT

MOLESKINE

Impressive effort by the PAX with the humidity being HORRIBLE; every PAX got at least 3 laps in.  Nice work.  It was great to have 8 new PAX taking on the AMRAP course including 2 new FNGs.  Welcome Chunky Soup (Campbell the 2.0) and Rooney (Brian the Principal).  At least one PAX was not happy about how “easy” we went with Rooney’s nickname (not calling anybody out though Longhorn).  Solid effort by Brexit, OutOfOrder, Hooch, Longhorn, Toast, and Bookworm on their first time on the course.  Great job by Dasher leading the way; couldn’t quite catch the course record although he does have the “warmup lap” excuse.  Kudos to Rockwell for being the only 4-time PAX participant.  Here are the results:

Jack Webb and Amy Grant’s love child

YHC gave a pre-blast that should have got about 3 PAX to post on this thick and humid morning. Surprise, surprise . . . 12 PAX were in the parking lot when things kicked off. Apparently there are a lot of sadists Amy Grant fans . . . Cue the boombox!

MOLESKINE

The PAX found out that Jack Webb and Amy Grant’s love child is VERY ugly.  However, YHC noticed that the PAX were singing along to the last song.  Some people call the last ab exercise the “J-Lo” but Jenny from the Block actually covered Amy Grant’s original version of this exercise.  From now on, this exercise will be called the “Amy Grant” by YHC.

Good work by all today.  Lots of complaining about the size of the rocks and the AYG Accordions so hopefully that meant the PAX got a good sweat.

  • Rudy, FNG yesterday, beast-mode today on the sprints
  • Legal Zoom, Goodfella, and Foundation were trying not to let the young buck win every sprint
  • Nice work by the 2.0s, Swamp and Toast (no, Goodfella is actually older) as they continue to get stronger
  • Shop Dawg and Gatorcub showing the young guys how to throw around some rocks . . . Impressive
  • Doughboy apparently likes Frack-sized rocks
  • Yeast is fitting right in with many of the “real” PAX by going shirtless in the COT today
  • Jingles takes the 10 count as a head start rather than a rest
  • Amazing how Posse really perked up during the Amy Grant/Peter Cetera duo

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Keep Colton, Yeast’s young neighbor, in your prayers as he battles a strange arthritis condition
  • Please support the “24 hours of Booty” this Friday and Saturday.  Lynnmarie Longo will be riding on a tandem bike starting at 7pm on the Survivor’s lap.  Also, F3 workout will be taking place all night for all to join in when you can

Thanks for the takeout Goodfella
