Cavemen Complexes

It’s getting hard to hide in these smaller groups that have been coming out to Skunkworks  lately, so YHC raised his hand a week ago to take the reigns again and try another experiment.  With some poking and prodding I proclaimed to Slack and Twitter about my impending visit to the legendary Area 51 AO, and being the hype machine that I am, I brought a crowd of 6 SW regulars.  I guess the mainstream A51 pax is just too young to appreciate a good Mr. T reference and decided to hit the more trendy “Hawks Nest” instead, or perhaps there’s a reason I’m not in marketing.   Oh well, I guess we’ll be the only swole guys at the pool this summer.

So last night I spent a bit cruising the YouTube for some ideas, and I found some fun things for us to try from caveman training.com  Here’s what we did.

After a little warmup jog around the parking lot, we circled up for a few exercises to get the joints moving: Halos, Around the World, Figure Eights, Merkins, Mountain climbers, and I think we did some swings before getting to the main event…which was three rounds of kettlebell complexes, each followed by a suicide ‘sprints’ (hardly sprinting) in the parking lot.  Each complex was repeated for 8 minutes, starting with 1 repetition on each arm, then 2 reps, and so on up to 5 reps and back down (as much as we could do)

Complex 1 – squat dead lift, hang clean, swing clean, snatch, press

(Suicide)

Complex 2 – clean and squat, snatch w/ windmill, then back to squat with shoulder press

(Suicide)

Complex 3 – squat curl, stand and press, back to squat position

(Suicide)

We finished with a little stomache… and that was a wrap.

Moleskinz:

There was something in the air this morning, and it wasn’t lemon fresh and didn’t smell like chocolate chip cookies.  Horsehead took a bold chance by trusting a fart and Funky, as usual, couldn’t let Horsehead get all the attention.  Strong work men!

Stone Cold, Horsehead, and Chicken Wing all went for back-up bells as these complexes were not friendly to the massive bells these guys were swinging… I probably should have put something in the pre-blast about bell recommendations, but who doesn’t like surprises?  Definitely learned a few new moves this morning… hopefully no backs, elbows, or shoulders were damaged in this experiment.

Congratulations Lois on your first run since getting the boot off!  And thank you for appreciating the alternative 90s music selection.

Thanks Funky for taking us out in prayer this AM.

As always, an honor to lead this fine group of men!  Thanks.

Another great group I was honored to lead today. The boys pushed hard and humidity was nice and high ugh…  The chatter seemed to be a minimum ( Even Schneider) so I assume everyone was happy with the workout. Sledge o Matic pushed himself hard today and this was the first we ever partner up- nice work brother.  Sledge, also finished the workout and look like he rolled down Crowder Mountain, you might need a little extra detergent in the wash, Surge, Ricky Bobby, Schneider and Rockwell crushed it today. Spits when not at home photo shopping the chicken in a towel is rising to the Gazelle level right before our eyes- excellent work brother. Falco, this is my first time meeting you brother– WELCOME and I look forward to posting with you more- heck of a job bro.

Announcements

Ricky Bobby was the 6th man- name from his work since he was at Fox sports and mainly works on NASCAR. Ricky is from the great community of Briarcrest and was Ehed out to the workout by Chicken Little and Schneider and he is held accountable by O-69, Schneider and Chicken ( Briarcrest WOLFPACK ).  Ricky is down around 30-35 lbs and is moving from the back of the pack when he started to the front of the pack and loves the push from others. Ricky Bobby made a great point today– When he started and  was the 6th it meant a lot when the faster guys come back and gave him encouragement— Remember boys it is more than a workout and encouraging your brothers goes a long way.

Keep Tayler in your thoughts and prayers– 31 year old man who Mayhem is connected with has passed away..

July 5th Independence Celebration

What: A workout celebrating our country’s independence

When: Monday, July 5th at 8:00 AM

Where: Launching spot for The Brave.  The Community House shopping center with Another Broken Egg and the bar/restaurant formerly known as The Gibson.

July 5th celebration you ask????  That’s right we are extending the celebration of our country’s independence with a workout on Monday, July 5th, since most of us will be off from work that day.  And not just any workout, this is a 2.0 friendly workout.  But do I need to bring a 2.0 for admission into this exclusive workout you ask?  Not at all…this workout will be suited for kids of all ages including the Pax that are kids at heart.

We will meet at the launch site of The Brave and head over to F3 SOB’s newest playground, Ballantyne’s Backyard.  100 acres of sprawling fairways, tee boxes and putting greens.  There we will have several workouts capped off with the most intense game of kickball this side of the Four Mile Creek greenway.

This will be a great reason for your 2.0 to get out of bed and not waste the day away (shakes fist at sky) and a great reason to invite that FNG that keeps mentioning that he wishes he had a way to celebrate Independence Day with a kickball game.

Death Valley Circuits

8 pax at Clemson did some circuit work. Not gonna give the details because it was fun and I plan to unleash it on the pax in the nearish future.

Down here for vacation and discovered Monday’s site is less than 0.5 miles from the AirBNB I’m in. Did a little pre-run to the AO worked out with some dudes and ran back.

Prior to the workout I did a few laps around the track. If there’s ever a time to be wearing a headlamp it was today. Glad I packed mine. Midway around the first lap the beam of my headlamp caught to glowing eyes in the middle of my path about 15 feet ahead. It took me a few steps to register and another few to stop. Good thing I did as the two glowing eyes I thought belonged to a cat instead belonged to a skunk. We stared at each other as I quickly, but not suddenly, reversed directions and ceded the track to him.

I’m glad we didn’t have a closer encounter or I might be sporting a new name upon my return to Waxhaw

Turnbuckle’s Push

Did you ever think Turnbuckle would push you to work harder?  Me neither, but he did today.  Here’s that story….

I put out a call last night for the men of Waxhaw to try something new.  All but 1 decided to stay with their same ole, comfy workout.  Thanks TB for making it a workout of 2 instead of 1.

5:14.  TB and I start to accept the fact that it will be just him and I.  He suggests relocating to Cuthbertson but I know that is damn near a knock out blow to a newly opened site so I hold firm in keeping the workout here.  I ask if we need to do DiCCS and TB laughs.  “No, I think I go it” says TB.   I make it known that I’ve got a cell phone and CPR.  Watch for cars.  Lets go.

WARM UP

Mosey towards bad idea.  Stop at the Cemetery for stretches with merkins mixed in to keep us on our toes.

THE THANG

Jogged to the bottom of Bad Idea and then back up to the stop sign.  Rest if needed then back to the bottom for round 2.  I saw TB pushing hard up the hill so I decided to run with him.  We got to the top and TB was a mixture of relived and proud.   I didn’t have the heart to tell him he had to do it again so I audibled and we ran back to the school.  Along the way TB commenting that he was struggling with the running today.  More than last week.  He had apparently never done a boot camp after giving blood.

We get to the back side of the school where I had developed a hybrid AMRAP course.  It was only 0.12 miles around with four exercises.  Merkins, Fence Squat Jumps, Walking Lunges, and Foot Release Squats.  The difficult part was a decent set of stairs and a progressive count.  Round 1 started with 5 of each.  Round 2: 10 reps.  Round 3: 15.   We made it to Round 5 before I decided that was enough.

While at the bottom of the stairs, Foundation drifted into my head (Why,  I do not know.  But I often see Deflated day dreaming and I suppose that’s what he’s thinking of as well) and I decided that before heading to our next destination, we should do 5 calf raises on each step.  TB now hates me.

Mosey to the side of the school for 10 Merkins and 10 Donkey kicks.  Continue on your own down to 1 and 1.

About 3 minutes left so we mosey to the parking lot and I ask for one final jail break to the cars to empty our tanks.  We get there and there is 1 minute left and we are at 1.95 miles.  C’est ne pas bon (That’s no good).  So I tell TB lets go walk the last minute to roll us to 2 miles.   We arrive back to COT on time and at 2.01 miles.  I’m about to start name-o-rama when TB hits me with a question I wasn’t prepared for.  “Want to go get in another half mile?”   Uh….yeah?!  So off we go.  The first quarter mile was at a jog.  The second quarter mile was a mix of jogging and walking, and the last quarter mile (yes, we went over) was all walking.  So today, The Lycan was an hour long workout.  Thanks for the push TB!

MOLESKIN

  • Great push from TB today.  Even more so when you realize he gave blood on Saturday.  I think most of us know the toll that puts on the body that first workout.
  • I will take this time to raise up TB.  He’s one of the highest of High Impact Men in our group, yet his work often goes unnoticed and unrecognized.  For those not aware, let me share all the things TB does to lift himself, his family, and this group up.  I didn’t intend for this BB to be all about TB, but quite frankly I feel he needs to be recognized for all his hard work (plus he was the only pax in attendance so who else am I going to talk about?).
    • TB’s runs are getting further and faster.  For those that haven’t noticed, he’s hitting more boot camps lately and keeping up with the clydesdales.  He is pushing as hard as he can to be able to stay with the group and be a part of the group.
    • TB continues to push himself on his weight loss journey.  He’s lost 70 pounds with a goal of being down 100 pounds later this year.
      • Many thanks to those that have helped him on his weight loss journey.  Several have encouraged him.  A few have gotten down and dirty to push him at workouts, go rucking with him, or talk through his diet.  Thanks to those men that have gone the extra mile to help another man.
    • He recently took on the role of Co Site Q at Diesel.  A role I know he is very proud of.  Reach out to TB to Q Diesel (before he reaches out to you!).
    • TB is active in several 3rd F events.
      • He helps to manage Christ Closet folding events, give aways, and furniture pick ups.
      • He has run the last four blood drives which have accounted for 4/5 of all blood F3 Waxhaw has donated.
      • He and his family are active participants with Rice and Beans in up town Charlotte.
      • When help is requested, he is one of the first men to step up.
    • If you haven’t had the pleasure of getting to know TB, I highly suggest you reach out to him after a workout.  His attitude and drive is infectious.  If only he wasn’t a damn Yankees fan….
  • This was the third Q this year that I had 3 or less pax in attendance.  Its getting harder and harder to tell my ego that its the site and not me.  Please show up to The Lycan in full force next week so I can stop wondering and finally confirm that its me.

That’ll put spickarickum in your macaroni!

15 men gathered on the eve of Fathers Day at Calvary to run some miles and take in some humidity.  I had a recycled workout ready to be executed.  I gave a disclaimer and told the crew we would be discussing “Dad moments” as we travelled.  We took a turn toward exit 3 (I think) of the Calvary campus and ran toward Carrington Racquet Club.  Here goes:

Warm Up:

IW

LSS

Merkins

The Thang:

I filled in the troops that we would be running the cul-de-sacs of Carrington and Bevington.  At each cul-de-sac, we knocked out 15 of the stated exercise.  I made up the exercises as we went (shocker, I know….and noted by Alf) but the ones I recall are:

Heels to Heaven

CDDs

Plank Jacks

Dolly

Merkins

HR Merkins

Freddy Mercury

Monkey Humpers

We finished up on Bevington and ran toward the South Charlotte Library.  We ran past a post mortem deer on Rea which only exasperated the aggressive upward slope run.  We did some Mary in the library lot followed by some calf raises while partners ran the lot loop.  Some stern, angry looking librarians showed up for work so we got out of dodge.

We finished up with gassers in the Calvary lot with 10 counts and Mary exercises mixed in.

That’s a wrap….4.5 miles!

Moleskin:

During our run, I asked selected pax to answer questions about their Dads.  Thanks for playing along.  Here were the questions and answers by dude:

Stonecold: Q:  Best vacation with your Dad?  A:  Surf City Beach in 1980 (bonus points for remembering the year)

Horsehead: Q: Line you always heard your Dad say?  A: That’ll put spickarickum in your macaroni (copyright stolen for title)

Spackler: Q: Funniest thing your Dad did as a kid?  A: Dragged weights out of the garage and lifted them in the driveway to pick up the ladies.

Prohibition:  Q: What was your Dad’s favorite drink?  A: Old Fashioned with cheap bourbon.

Alf:  Q: What was the maddest you ever made your dad?  A: Lied about turning the house upside down looking for Playboys.

My apologies if I forgot any Dad stories!  Weigh in if I did.  Great to be with you boys!  Geraldo and Hoover, thanks for the privilege to Q!  The Rock Zero site will always be dear to me!  So many great memories and so many more to be made….courtesy of the men of A51!  Happy Father’s Day studs!
