Molesine:

I titled this one Beast Mode for a reason.  Quite simply put…I’ve been so impressed with all the workouts F3 has to offer!  Over the past 1.5 years we’ve learned there is a niche for everyone’s taste buds, so men can go to sites that offer up the kind of workout they are looking for.  To date however (other than Day Zero at time…when Radar and Haze bring out those sandbags or Diamond Head when Byron and Nibbler bring the gear) have I left an hour long workout completely destroyed.  This is the staple that we’ve created at Olympus over the past 10 months.  Beast Mode is on another Strongman/Cardo/Strength level and the men that posted today absolutely Crushed it out there.  As Q, it is incredibly rewarding to see guys give it their all…that today was a representation of that Herculean effort on everyone’s part.

However, one thing to point out, Hacker may have the strongest groin in the world as being O2 deprived, he strapped on the sled straps wrong and pulled the weighted sled 80 yards with his pelvic region…unreal…lol.

Again, thank you for posting with us and it is an honor to lead such a strong group of me.

Respectfully, The Hoff

YHC had some Saturday morning fun planned for the start of college football…but first some conditioning needed to be done. Cocky set the tone early sprinting to the front of the pack on the opening lap. Started with a little four corners, which didn’t look like much with the cones only 10 yards apart, but we got the heart rate up and some sweat going early.

Pax did some solid work on the Gut Busters. Ran hard on the Sprints. Again, Cocky and Chipper bringing some 2.0 energy to the Pax. Cocky, much like his Dad, even trash talked YHC one time on the sprint.

Not sure how the other Pax felt…but the pushes and pulls hurt YHC badly.

Radar finished us out  a few weeks ago with some passing drills. It was fun. Figured we’d do it again. Some solid efforts out there this morning:

  • Spackler laid out for one
  • Long Distance showed closing speed on a great grab.
  • Stagecoach showed a strong arm out there…probably stronger than any UNC QB actually.
  • Splinter ignored the bruises on his hammy and let his instincts kick in to chase down one throw.
  • We found out that Chipper throws a mean quick slant…pretty sure he went 7 for 7 for 185 yards.
  • Halfway through, Semi-Gloss took off his shirt…cradled one in…slid right down his hairy, sweaty belly. #FullGloss #ExtraSheen

Moleskin:

I’ll let the other 5 pax that posted judge for themselves, but I think we all got a pretty descent workout this morning.  Lots of leg work, lots of merkins, and of course we got some pull-ups in too. Strange Brew clued me into the fact that AMRAP pull-ups are a tradition at Ascent.  Who am I to upset the tradition…so we did it!

I had my cones set up on the practice field before we started, and as we jogged onto the field Dickies (I think) was very quick to point out the star formation.   Yep…that’s exactly what we are going to do.  So I gave some murky directions and the pax mostly got the idea of what we were to do.  I did get a reminder somewhere in the midst of our starfish that this is supposed to be a moderate workout.  A few too many merkins?

As we were jogging to the picnic tables/bleachers, we noticed the remote control airplane flying around the field in the back.  Someone suggested we try to catch it….hmm…good luck with that.  So we got to the picnic tables and I began to give instructions on doing step-ups…someone recommended that the bleachers would be more stable, so we moved to the bleachers.  We did our leg lifts and some tricep dips, then to the derkins.  Uh-oh…not enough room for Geraldo…let’s try the other set of bleachers.  OK…that’s better.  Well at least the changes allowed us to get a few extra breathers.  There’s your moderate workout guys!

It was good to see a few pax out there that I don’t see often…Dickies, Lumberg, and of course a couple others that I have seen more of recently…Geraldo, Mouth.  All of you did great out there this morning, including Phelps (Mouth’s 2.0).  It was an honor to lead.

2:00 PT Test
– AMRAP Push-ups

COT

NMMS

The men of Peak 51 are growing tougher by the day, and their effort and perseverance through Leg Day proved it.

Merkin Clinic: 6 showed up at 0500 in a effort to improve themselves and their push-up power: Geraldo, Slim Fast, Sensei, Whitesnake, Swiss Miss, and YHC. Body, Elbows, Hands, Shoulders, Feet. You have the combination, now put it to work. As a reward for their efforts they got to test out their new skill in a 2:00 AMRAP Push-up PT test at the end of the workout along with the rest of the pax. #surprise!

Funny stuff: pax didn’t want a repeat of the FFSOD and voted for Mary instead, they were emptily threatened with Mary FOLLOWED by FFSOD as a result. #muchgroaningdidensue #hahagotcha Q threw out an Extra Credit offer to the pax to explain why Freddy Mercurys were called Freddy Mercurys; Drop Thrill got the right answer but the pax couldn’t understand why they got 5 Extra reps as a reward. #whatpartofextracreditdontyouunderstand Incidentally, accidentally causing your team to do more work doesn’t make you Blue Falcon; it must be intentional, nevertheless we’ll give Drop Thrill the Blue Fledgling award for the day.

Feats of strength: I’m sure there were many I didn’t see #qgasseshimself but shout out to War Daddy BOOMER who was smoking every single one of the Leg Day sprints when most of the rest of us were sucking gloom. Strong work, Boomer. You made me want to work harder, and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Kudos to Gullah who played seeing-eye dog for Sensei today. Kudos to Sensei for not tripping Gullah when he wasn’t looking.

Announcements: Labor Day convergence at DMZ (Carmel Neighborhood Park, 0700-0800), team SPEARHEAD BREWRuck 003 Saturday 9/27, Young Life Mud Run 9/20 USNWC. Remember Turkey Leg’s family in your thoughts and prayers this week.

YOU are getting stronger, and YOU are getting faster. YOU know who you are. #allofyou

The pleasure was all mine.

Nothing new to see here

Naked Moleskin:

In honor of my wife putting up with me for 21 years (as of yesterday), most of the cadence exercises were to 21.  I don’t know why I deserve such a great wife but am thankful for a strong marriage.

YHC is losing creativity as bricks have been used multiple times this year.   However, the little b#2tards are harder to lug around for 45 minutes than one would think (#smallpackagewithbigpunch).  I did audible and not require they be lugged up Palentine during triple nickle and Jacobs Ladder so it could have been worse.  Need to work on some sand bags and 12 foot PVC pipe for the future (#nomoreoakstumps)

Pretty sure I got the day started off right when I heard some mumble chatter about the Q being pissed off at something after the first set of John Travolta’s.   YHC was fine, just trying to push everyone to get better.

Of all the people to slack off, I notice Frasier is doing the Carioca sans bricks while the rest of the PAX follows Q’s directions.   May have to bring some duct tape next time to strap those suckers to his hands and make him run with a ruck sack so the rest of the PAX has a chance keeping up.

Finally, Q is happy to no longer be a regular War Daddy as we now have multiple “Respects” every Friday morning, including Checkpoint, who pushes the PAX every week.

Announcements:

Tutoring getting kicked off in a few weeks at Billingsville, AG Middle School, and a school in Matthews (Champagne is the Q).  Email me at pchepul@gmail.com for more information on any of the locations.

Convergence on Labor Day at 7am at Carmel Road Park (DMZ site).

As always, it was a privilege and an honor to lead such a great group of men this am.

YE OLDE MOLESKINE

Great numbers at Kevlar today and YHC showed up to many a SPEARHEAD wearing rucks and swinging bells. Not the friendliest Go Ruck workout but as usual the lads dug in with an added 30-40 pounds. Most of the mumble chatter in the circle of pain was focused on Big League Chew’s rear end as he was the only member of the pax facing outward. He may be a war daddy but BLC still puts us all to shame! We haven’t seen the tires in a while at Kevlar so it was time to throw them back in the mix along with the broad jump burpee which is another crowd pleaser to say the least. The big rope had to be used so after some confusion three teams were formed and all I know is that my team lost every time. Momentum was the name of the game with the tug-o-war.
Thanks for allowing me to lead. Have a great holiday weekend. Convergence a DMZ this Monday at Carmel Park 7am.

Bouncing Blinking Lights

21 men got in one more good hill run at Devil’s Turn prior to next week’s BRR extravaganza.  Per Bratwurst’s suggestion 85% of the PAX wore their BRR approved reflective vests, head lamps, and blinking lights for a dress rehearsal of sorts.

On the warm-up “apartment loop”, the combination of a 20+ man running cluster, headlamps, and blinky lights made for comical sight.  Bratwurst and I looked back on one occasion and laughed at the strange discotech / flash-mob / village people like sight.  However, once the hills started there was no more laughing.

There were 3 options for today’s Devil’s Turn which were ~4-miles, ~6-miles, and a soul crushing 6+ mile option with a full “fun hill” thrown in.  The 0.25 mile “fun hill” had many (incl. YHC) considering recycling Merlot by the top.  After COT, there were rumors of an actual Merlot recycling situation, but that cannot be confirmed or denied.  Speak up in the comments if that was you and you would like to be recognized for this balls-out, man making, screw-what-your-body-is-telling-you, effort. Intensity brother!

The format today was better than weeks past since it seemed that there was more interaction as people were passing each other going various directions on the various options.  It was good to be able to utter words of encouragement sporadically between the labored breathing.

Great run today brothers.  It is likely that you are now feeling the effects of all the weeks and months of training and are noticing that the hills are not as hard and your speed has increased.  Now lets go kill the BRR.

Announcements:

– Labor Day Convergence at DMZ at 7:00 am.  Foxhole will be at regular 5:30 start time.  All other Monday workouts will converge at DMZ.

– Please volunteer or volunteer your neighbor to be on standby for BRR.  There are currently no backups. Drivers are also needed if interested.

– Please keep Turkey Leg and his family in your prayers as they mourn the loss of his mother.

No long distance running today

With the BRR just a week away, the last thing YHC wanted to do is run forever. So YHC took the helm of Rebel Yell and 11 pax showed up for a 2nd installment of a Rebel Yell beat down.
Find an open area very close by and circle up.
SSH X25 IC
IW X 25 IC
20 Merkins OYO
Peter Parkers X 20 IC
PArtner up. Size and speed does not matter. Partner 1 runs the perimeter of the lot (around 200M), while partner does said exercise. Flapjack until total reached cumulatively.
100 CDD
200 Merkins
300 LBC
Between each exercise plank with various R/L hand high.
100 wide arm Merkins
300 squats
200 Russian twists
Just enough time for Mary
Flutter X 25 IC

I figured since the BRR has tons of running by your self, we should do the exact opposite and perform every exercise with a partner. This way you count on your brother to pull you through the final sets. The great thing is that we didn’t have to move the pax far to get the full benefit. Even this cool morning we were gasping for 02. The idea was to do as much as possible with very little rest. This was accomplished. Great showing by all.

Something new?

Only way to find out is to show up at CCHS at 5:25 tomorrow am

Heavy + Conditioning

After hundreds, probably thousands, of miles of BRR training in the hills of Raintree and Piper Glen (including two common-law HOA memberships), a dodgy knee, a monkey fist knot in my left glute, grape-sized blisters, and a dead toe nail: the hay is in the barn and the biscuits are in the oven–back to the bells.  Finally.  Fourteen like-minded pax, including a robust SOB showing, moved the iron in a workout that scarcely registered on the pedometer.

The Weinke….

  • Single or Double Heavy Swing Clean pyramid: 6-9-12-9-6

COT

MOLESKIN

This was really two workouts stitched together: heavy work followed by conditioning work.  Ideally, you’d spend 30, maybe 40, minutes on Heavy day and maybe the same on a separate conditioning day. The abridged mashup was to serve for some KB object lessons.

First, most guys can handle significantly more weight than they are currently swinging.  This isn’t an ego thing–it’s an acknowledgement that the ballistic nature of many of the KB moves allows for more weight.  A KB is not a dumbbell: a DB is typically used to isolate muscle groups whereas a KB combines muscle groups.  The additional muscle groups combined with the ballistic movements leads to heavier weights. You may not be ready quite yet to jump to 48 kg, but you most likely need to move up at least one KB size, but probably two.

Second, you need more than one KB--heavier for grinding moves like swings and squats and a smaller one for presses (and maybe groundwork), when you start to fatigue, and for combining for doubles.  The Meathead concept of 0.0 allows for this–all the bells are right there in the COP.  It’s harder to accomplish in the typical F3 “gear” workout; not easy to tote 2 KBs around the AO (but it can be done…)

Third, the KB is a great conditioning tool.  The swing ladders got the heart rate up and perhaps got in your head a little (50 swings? Again?).  It may have exposed a weak link–if your form is not compact and efficient you fatigue early.  Most likely, your grip is the first give out.

If you want to sharpen you form, pack on muscle and strengthen your grip, join us for the 10,000 swing challenge this fall:  500 swings a day (5 sets:  10x / 15x / 25x / 50x), 2 days on, 1 day off. Look for tweets after the BRR.

Other comments/observations:

  • Lots of good work out there today.  Seemed like everyone embraced the Heavy concept and got a chance to experiment with several combos, whether single or double.
  • Stone Cold apparently has been fully brainwashed by the #PencilArm crowd: wore sleeves to a Meathead workout.
  • Not so with Brown, however, who raided Gramps’ t-shirt drawer with a classic and unapologetic #wifebeater.  He kind of smelled like Brut 33, too.
  • New Pax FNG has jumped in with both feet: FNG post to Fast Twitch, back to Death Valley yesterday, then posts at Meathead today for his first ever KB work.  Looked darned good doing it, too.  He’s a solid contender for Rookie of Week. Good EH work by Madison, too.
  • Triple Claps also to Bartman, a Cubs fan who first posted yesterday at DV.  New guys getting after it…
  • Proposed supplement to Meathead disclaimer: You must be at least 48″ tall to ride The Beast. #Webster.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Labor Day Area 51 convergence will be at DMZ (Carmel Park launch at 0700).  Foxhole will be on regular schedule. All other Monday A51 workouts will be at DMZ.
  • Look for additional convergence info in the weekly email/tweets/preblasts for the next weekend (Friday 9-5 and Sat. 9-6) due to BRR.
  • Pray for Turkey Leg and his family on the loss of his mother earlier this week.  If you’d like to make a donation in her memory talk to me or Alf.
